Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems, yet their practical implementation is severely hindered by the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish multistep sulfur redox kinetics. Here, we design a ZnCoNi zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZnCoNi-ZIF) that is in situ grown on acid-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and subsequently carbonized to afford an N-doped carbon/MWCNT composite embedded with Zn–Co–Ni nanoparticles (denoted as ZnCoNi-NC@MWCNT). This composite is employed as a functional coating on commercial polypropylene separators. The cooperative effect of trimetallic active sites and the conductive carbon matrix endows the separator with polar M-Nx and pyridinic N sites, a high-surface-area mesoporous architecture, and continuous electron pathways, enabling physical confinement, chemical anchoring, and electrocatalytic conversion of LiPSs. Specifically, uniformly distributed Zn–Co–Ni nanoparticles act as electrocatalytic centers to accelerate the reversible multistep sulfur transformation, while the synergistic interplay among these components mitigates the shuttle effect and reinforces the electrode–electrolyte interface stability. Consequently, Li–S cell with this modified separator delivers 894 mAh g–1 at 5.2 mg cm–2 sulfur loading and 0.2 C, and maintains stable cycling over 1908 cycles at 2.2 mg cm–2 and 0.5C with a low capacity decay of ≈0.041% per cycle and Coulombic efficiency approaching 100%. This work presents a trimetallic-catalyst-based separator engineering strategy for high-performance, long-life Li–S batteries.

The design of heterogeneous catalysts to enhance substrate adsorption and hydrogen spillover plays a key role in the hydrogenation of biomass-derived chemicals. Herein, a composite catalyst support featuring a nano-SiO2 core and a nitrogen-doped carbon shell was developed for Pd loading (Pd/SiO2@NC). Following NC coating, the pyridine-N and pyrrole-N in the porous NC shell interacted with Pd through their lone pair electrons, enabling the anchoring and dispersion of Pd nanoparticles. The incorporation of SiO2 with NC notably increased the electronegativity at the interface, improving the vanillin (VAN) adsorption through both VAN-Pd and VAN-SiO2@NC interactions. Moreover, electron transfer between SiO2 and NC promoted hydrogen spillover, effectively lowering the energy barrier for the hydrogenation process. Consequently, >99% of VAN was completely hydrogenated to vanillyl alcohol over Pd/SiO2@NC under mild conditions (0.5 MPa H2, 20 °C, 60 min). The catalyst exhibited widespread activity for various lignin-derived aromatic aldehydes, indicating considerable potential for industrial applications. This study constructed the active catalyst surface that successfully synthesized aromatic alcohols from renewable lignin-derived compounds, effectively replacing traditional synthesis process.

The exploration of high-performance wave absorbing materials is particularly critical for solving electromagnetic pollution. Based on the designability and structural virtue of one-dimensional anisotropic structure, a succession of MoO2/N-doped carbon (MoO2/NC) heterogeneous nanorods with various aspect ratios have been synthesized by hydrothermal, chemical oxidation polymerization and calcination process. To investigate the effect of aspect ratio on the microwave attenuation capacity, these fabricated nanorods are compounded with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) under different filler contents. It is concluded that the aspect ratio can effectively regulate the microwave absorption performance. Specifically, the MoO2/NC-1/PVDF composites acquire the RLmin value of −56.9 dB at 2.9 mm and the RLmin value (−44.2 dB) of MoO2/NC-2/PVDF composites appear at a thinner thickness of 1.8 mm under a filler loading of 15 wt%. With the increment of aspect ratio, the optimal effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of MoO2/NC-3/PVDF composites extend up to 6.32 GHz at 2.0 mm within a filler content of only 10 wt%, covering the whole Ku band. Meanwhile, the radar cross section simulations of MoO2/NC/PVDF composites further verify their immense potential in practical application. This work demonstrates that the aspect ratio design is conducive to acquisition for regulable and broadband microwave absorption under low filler loading.

Diseases caused by bacterial infections significantly threaten human health. However, the overuse of conventional antibiotics has led to rising drug resistance, necessitating the development of alternative antimicrobial strategies. In this study, we designed and synthesized a dual single-atom FeC nanozyme supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC), incorporating Fe single-atom sites, Co single-atom sites, and Fe-Co dual-atom sites. Characterization and theoretical calculations confirmed that the catalytic performance of FeCo-NC was superior to those of single-atom Fe-NC and Co-NC. Photothermal experiments demonstrated FeCo-NC’s excellent photothermal properties and high photothermal conversion efficiency. Chemodynamic studies revealed its ability to efficiently catalyze H 2 O 2 for generating reactive oxygen species, outperforming Fe-NC and Co-NC in catalytic kinetics. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that FeCo-NC effectively eliminated bacteria against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA) (99.36 %) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) (99.76%) through the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy. Transcriptome analysis further showed that FeCo-NC altered bacterial gene expression related to growth, metabolism, and membrane structure, enhancing its antibacterial efficacy. Beyond its antimicrobial effects, FeCo-NC reduced inflammation at infected wound sites, promoted macrophage polarization, enhanced collagen deposition, and accelerated wound healing. This study presents a promising antibiotic-free strategy for the clinical treatment of infected wounds.

Engineering vacancy defects is a critical approach to modulating the properties of catalytic materials. However, the development of highly efficient vacancy defect catalysts and the investigation of their roles and effects remain challenging. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Co 3 O 4 porous nanomaterials were synthesized using ZIF-67 as a sacrificial template. Subsequently, through vacuum heat treatment, nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Co 3 O 4 porous nanomaterials with an appropriate amount of oxygen vacancies were finally obtained. This material exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. At a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the overpotential is only 293 mV, and it has good cyclic stability. The existence of oxygen vacancies has been confirmed by various characterization methods. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that oxygen vacancies can enhance the electrical conductivity of the material, optimize the binding energy of the intermediates in the OER, and significantly improve the catalytic activity. In this study, a method of designing high-performance OER electrocatalytic materials by regulating the oxygen vacancies in the nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Co 3 O 4 system is proposed, which opens up a new way for the development of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting. Summary Using ZIF-67 as a template, obtained uniformly dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon-coated cobalt tetraoxide has relatively abundant porosity. The introduction of oxygen vacancy defects significantly improves the electrical conductivity and specific surface area of the material in favor of electrocatalysis. DFT calculation shows that the introduction of oxygen vacancy can significantly improve the conductivity of the material, Co 3 O 4 system is conducive to the reaction of oxygen-containing intermediates, reduces the binding energy required in the reaction process, and improves the electrocatalytic activity of the material. The prepared Co 3 O 4 /NC-Ov-1 showed excellent OER catalytic performance (overpotential of 293 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ).

Due to the serious problems of energy shortage and environmental pollution, seawater-based zinc-air (S-ZABs) batteries with low cost and reduced freshwater competition are considered to be a highly promising application for energy storage and energy conversion devices. However, the oxygen catalysts used in S-ZABs often suffer from Cl − poisoning and serious side reactions (ClER). Therefore, we synthesized multi-walled carbon nanotubes-supported nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CoP/Co 2 P nanoparticles (CoP/Co 2 P@NC/MWCNTs). The contents of P can be modulated by the ratio of Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and NaH 2 PO 2 . The optimized CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs with 1.4 % P, 20.88 % Pyridine-N exhibited excellent ORR activity (E 1/2 = 0.88 V, E onset = 0.98 V, and J L = 5.04 mA cm −2 ) in O 2 -saturated 0.1 mol L −1 KOH + 0.5 mol L −1 NaCl. CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs exhibited excellent OER activity (E overpotential = 299 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with the Tafel slope of 80.99 mV dec −1 ). The specific capacity of the Zn || CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs seawater-based cell was as high as 805.26 mAh g −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . In addition, the Zn || CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs seawater-based cell had an ultra-long cycling stability of more than 500 h, which demonstrated that CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs has great potential to be as a seawater-based zinc-air cathode. This study opens a new way to design and synthesize non-precious metal OER/ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts in seawater electrolytes.

Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR ( E half = 0.907 V) and OER ( E j=10 = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO 2 ). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core–shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm 2 ), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.

A N-doped carbon composite (Mn 3 O 4 @NC) was prepared by the calcination of Mn-TTTHA . • Mn 3 O 4 @NC exhibited dual-enzyme activities, with the competitive kinetic parameters. • A colorimetric sensor of Mn 3 O 4 @NC was established for the detection of TC and NO 2 − . • The smartphone-assisted sensing platform for TC and NO 2 − were constructed. • The sensor provided possibility for the detection of TC and NO 2 − in real environment. Accurate, reliable and visualized detection of tetracycline (TC) and nitrite (NO 2 − ) is necessary and challenging for the environment and food safety. Hence, we have developed a colorimetric strategy utilizing N-doped carbon composite (Mn 3 O 4 @NC) nanozyme for TC and NO 2 − analysis. Mn 3 O 4 @NC with oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities is successfully prepared by the calcination process with MOF material as precursor. The dual enzyme-like property could valid catalytic oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) from colorless to blue ox-TMB, accompanied by the production of a variety of reactive oxygen species and the transformation of Mn valence state. Taking advantage of the typical reduction reaction and specific diazotization reaction between TC or NO 2 − and ox-TMB, the nanozyme announces colorimetric and ration colorimetric signals, exhibiting high performance in selectivity and anti-interference ability with corresponding limitation of detection of 0.40 μM and 1.006 μM, respectively. Moreover, by utilizing the color transition reflected in the colorimetric and ration colorimetric response processes, a smartphone assisted sensing platform based on agarose hydrogel was established to achieve one-stop, convenient and visual detection of TC and nitrite. It is worth noting that this method of visualizing and digitizing the detection process overcomes limitations of traditional detection methods and maximizes accurate detection of harmful pollutants. This strategy also provides a promising solution for accurately and reliably detecting TC and nitrite in water and food. A nanoenzyme with dual-enzyme activities was synthesized by the calcination of MOF material. This dual-enzyme activities could effectively catalyze the oxidation of colorless TMB to blue ox-TMB under the action of Mn valence state transition and generation of reactive oxygen species. Its visualized catalytic performance enabled it to be used for colorimetric/ratiometric detection of tetracycline (TC) and nitrite in real water samples with the lower limitation of detection. With the assistence of smartphone and agarose hydrogel, the one-stop, convenient and visible sensing platform was constructed, applying for the TC and nitrite in real water samples. This work provides a new strategy for accurately and reliably detecting TC and nitrite in water and food. Download: Download high-res image (130KB) Download: Download full-size image

Metal sulfides have been considered promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacities. However, the poor electrical conductivity and sluggish electrochemical kinetics of metal sulfides are the critical factors that are limiting their applications. In this work, cobalt sulfides with heterostructures embedded in an N-doped carbon composite (CoS/Co9S8@NC) have been synthesized to further investigate Na+ diffusion in the SIBs. With contributions from the heterostructure, the N-doped carbon, and the unique morphology, the composite can deliver enhanced rate capability and cycling stability compared to Co9S8. This work depicts the change of Na+ diffusion under the influence of heterostructures, providing an effective strategy of material design for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion storage.

In this study, a new lightweight one-dimensional absorber Co@NC@MoS 2 was designed and prepared. Firstly, polydopamine (PDA) was coated by oxidative self-polymerization with cobalt-nitrilotriacetic acid chelate nanowires (Co-NTAC) as template. Then core-shell structured magnetic hierarchical nanotubes (Co@PDA@MoS 2 ) were prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. After thermal annealing, PDA layer was transformed into nitrogen doped carbon layer (NC) to obtain the efficient microwave absorber Co@NC@MoS 2 . The removal of template and growth of MoS 2 were completed simultaneously, the preparation process was simplified. Because of its good magnetic loss and dielectric loss, Co@NC@MoS 2 shows excellent microwave absorption performance. Under filler content of 15 wt.%, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) can reach -61.97 dB@9.2 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 5.6 GHz. The electromagnetic parameters of Co@NC@MoS 2 can be further adjusted by changing the load of MoS 2 . Meanwhile, the structure and composition of Co@NC@MoS 2 were systematically analyzed. The influence of the microstructure on the microwave absorbing properties was investigated, and the microwave attenuation mechanism is revealed. As an efficient and lightweight absorber, Co@NC@MoS 2 has potential application value in the construction of new stealth coatings.

Industrial-scale hydrogen energy deployment requires the design of highly efficient catalysts with low overpotential and excellent stability, particularly at high current densities. We report a novel method for fabricating an N-doped carbon coated self-supporting Ni-NiWO 4 heterojunction on a nickel foam (NF) catalyst (Ni-NiWO 4 @NC/NF) using a facile combination of hydrothermal and chemical vapor deposition techniques. The Ni-NiWO 4 @NC's plentiful catalytic active sites and their seamless contact with NF, along with the synergistic coupling of N-doped carbon, contribute to a decrease in charge transfer resistance and an improvement in catalyst stability. Impressively, when evaluated as an electrocatalyst in alkaline media, the overpotentials of Ni-NiWO 4 @NC/NF at a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 are only 125.6 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and 308.8 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. The catalyst also demonstrates exceptional stability for HER, OER, and water splitting at high current densities. In addition, the two-electrode electrolyzer using Ni-NiWO 4 @NC/NF as both cathode and anode need a cell voltage of 1.72 V to deliver 100 mA·cm −2 . These findings offer valuable insights into the design and advancement of self-supported non-noble transition metal electrocatalysts for large-scale hydrogen production in industrial applications.

Intermetallic electrocatalysts have demonstrated significant potential in facilitating the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells with enhanced activity and durability. However, it is still an enormous challenge to the facile synthesis of Pt-based intermetallic catalysts with uniform size and high ordering degree. Here, we innovatively fabricate the core-shell structured L1 0 -PtFe intermetallics with Pt skins supported on N-doped porous carbon matrix through one-step pyrolysis of PtFe Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (denoted as L1 0 -PtFe/NC). Under the constraints of the porous structure and cyano-ligand bonding, most Fe atoms are alloyed with Pt to form uniform-ordered PtFe intermetallics, while some Fe atoms are atomically dispersed in the carbon framework to form FeN x moieties. Notably, a series of intermetallic PtFe catalysts with different ordering degrees are successfully constructed by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature, which verified that the increase of ordering degree is beneficial to promote the electrocatalytic performance. In particular, the ordered L1 0 -PtFe/NC-800 exhibits superb ORR activity with both mass and specific activities, which are 2.7-folds higher than those of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, after an accelerated durability test, L1 0 -PtFe/NC-800 retains over 90 % mass activity. This work provides a promising approach for the development of efficient Pt-based intermetallic electrocatalysts for fuel cells.
