Silver-based catalysts are promising candidates for soot oxidation because of their good catalytic performances and low costs compared with platinum catalysts. NO2 acts as a strong agent for the oxidation of soot over Pt/Al2O3. However, an abnormal inhibition effect of NOx was observed over the Ag/Al2O3 catalyst during the processes of soot temperature-programmed oxidation and transient reaction analysis. The formation of silver nitrates was confirmed by temperature-programmed decomposition of NOx, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction with H2. The intrinsic reactivity of silver nitrate was found to be much lower than that of metallic silver in ″loose″ and ″tight″ contacts between soot and catalyst. Moreover, the formed silver nitrate was relatively thermally stable, with the decomposition completed at around 450 °C. At higher temperatures, the catalyst recovered and the nitrate poisoning effect no longer worked.

A highly efficient CeO x -BC 0.6 (BC: biochar. 0.6: mass ratio of Ce/(BC + Ce)) catalyst was prepared by air oxidation for low temperature NH 3 selective catalytic reduction of NO x . The catalytic performance, characterization and reaction mechanism of the CeO x -BC 0.6 were investigated. The results showed that NO x conversion and N 2 selectivity of CeO x -BC 0.6 catalyst obtained by calcining in air were above 90 % at 150–300 °C and 100,000 h −1 . The surface oxygen groups, acid sites and oxygen vacancies were generated by air oxidation treatment, which promoted the adsorption and activation of reactants. NH 3 and NO x were adsorbed on the catalyst surface in the form of NH 4 + , NH 3 + , nitrite and nitrate adspecies. The redox cycles of ketonic carbonyl/phenol (C O/C–OH) pairs and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ pairs were responsible for the activation of NH 3 and NO x . NH 2 NO and NH 4 NO 2 were the main active intermediates. The reaction of NH 3 selective catalytic reduction of NO x over CeO x -BC 0.6 mainly followed Eley-Rideal mechanism. These results will promote the understanding of mechanism of NH 3 selective catalytic reduction of NO x for biochar-based catalyst prepared by air oxidation.

Fe-MIL-101-NH 2 was prepared by solvothermal method with ferric nitrate and 2-Aminoterephthalic Acid (DBC-NH 2 ), and Fe-MIL-101-NH 2 as precursor was calcined to prepare α-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst. The optimum synthesis condition and the NO conversion efficiency of α-Fe 2 O 3 were systematically investigated, and its crystallinity, micro-morphology and surface acidity were characterized. The results showed that α-Fe 2 O 3 over calcination at 400 °C for 1 h had excellent catalytic activity, SO 2 tolerance, water resistance, and stability. When an initial NO concentration of 500 ppm, the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 35000 h −1 , and a reaction temperature of 350 °C, the NO conversion efficiency of α-Fe 2 O 3 remained above 90 %. The crystal structure of the catalyst was α-Fe 2 O 3 which retained the original octahedral morphology of Fe-MIL-101-NH 2 and increased a lot of new pores, leading to more abundant Lewis acid sites for promoting NO conversion efficiency.

A novel MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst with hollow silkworm structure was synthesized successfully via an ethanol-thermal strategy by using activated carbon fiber felt as template for the first time. The silkworm-like MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst (MnTi) exhibited higher NO x conversion in the whole experimental temperature region (90–330 °C) under a high space velocity of 36,000 h −1 in comparison with the common MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst without hollow silkworm structure (MnTi-B). The excellent catalytic performance of MnTi can be attributed to its high specific surface area, large content of active surface oxygen species (O S ), and more surface acid sites. In addition, the MnTi catalyst also exhibited excellent resistance to water or SO 2 poisoning.

Nitrous acid (HONO) significantly contributes to OH radicals in the atmosphere, whereas the HONO sources need to be urgently further explored. The photolysis of solid nitroaromatic compounds (Ar-NO2), including nitrophenols (NPs) and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs), was investigated in a cylindrical reactor coupled to a NOx analyzer at the ambient pressure. The formation of HONO and NOx (NOx = NO2 + NO) by the photolysis of five NPs and four NPAHs was quantified. HONO and NO formations from Ar-NO2 were obviously enhanced under irradiation. For NPs, the Ar-NO2 photolysis frequency for HONO (JAr-NO2→HONO) and NO (JAr-NO2→NO) formations varied in the range of (0.34–4.16) × 10–7 and (0.38–3.21) × 10–7 s–1, respectively. For NPAHs, JAr-NO2→HONO and JAr-NO2→NO were measured to be (0.02–2.01) × 10–5 and (0.001–1.59) × 10–4 s–1, respectively. The photolysis of Ar-NO2 in aerosols was estimated to establish a HONO source strength lower than 17 ppt·h–1, suggesting that the photolysis of Ar-NO2 may not well explain daytime HONO source strength in the atmosphere.

Mesoporous In/Hβ-X series catalysts were prepared by desilication method with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and indium incorporation for selective catalytic reduction of NO with methane (CH 4 -SCR). The post desilication treatment conditions for preparing In/Hβ-X were optimized. Etching time is the most important desilication parameter influencing the resulting CH 4 -SCR performance of the catalyst. The In/Hβ-3 sample which was etched for 3 h presents the highest NO x conversion, 22% higher than In/H-Beta counterparts using commercial microporous beta. Obvious analysis reveals that besides generating mesopores, controlled desilication can modulate the proportion of InO + active sites and surface oxygen species, allowing more active sites to be exposed.

The design of Passive NO x Adsorbers (PNA) is essential for controlling cold-start emissions, yet Pd-ceria systems often encounter limitations in storage capacity and hydrothermal durability. In this work, we stabilize Pd by incorporating atomically dispersed Zr as neighboring atoms in ceria, establishing a framework for efficient and stable NO x capture. Zr doping in CeO 2 modifies the electronic environment by intensifying Pd-O hybridization and broadening electronic states near the Fermi level. These modifications, alongside emergent Pd-O-Zr interfacial sites, facilitate the dynamic reconfiguration of oxygen vacancies. This process promotes the oxidation of NO to NO 2 , enabling the optimized catalyst to yield a NO x storage capacity of 166.6 µmol/g cat —a value that surpasses the theoretical limit derived from Pd content. Structural stabilization further underpins these performance gains. Zr doping reinforces the CeO 2 lattice, enhancing the thermal resilience of the support. Simultaneously, the atomically dispersed Zr adjacent to Pd sites modulates metal-support interactions to an optimal state, effectively inhibiting Ostwald ripening, particle migration, and coalescence. These combined effects significantly improve hydrothermal stability under rigorous conditions. Our findings provide a mechanistic basis for the rational design of high-performance PNA and offer a viable pathway to mitigate cold-start NO x emissions in advanced after treatment systems.

Abstract For the eco-friendly asphalt pavements with NOx degradation performance, TiO2@CoAl-LDHs were prepared and applied as asphalt modifiers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that TiO2 was uniformly loaded onto the surface of the CoAl-LDHs, and TiO2@CoAl-LDHs have been successfully synthesized. The integration of TiO2 and CoAl-LDHs reduced the energy barrier for electron–hole pair formation upon light irradiation, resulting in the stronger absorbance of TiO2@CoAl-LDHs in both ultraviolet and visible light ranges. After combining TiO2 with CoAl-LDHs, the photogenerated electron transfer and separation efficiency of TiO2@CoAl-LDHs were significantly enhanced, and the recombination of electron–hole pairs was concomitantly suppressed. Compared with TiO2 and CoAl-LDHs, TiO2@CoAl-LDH-modified asphalt exhibited stronger interaction with NOx. Meanwhile, NOx diffused more easily and had a larger penetration proportion in TiO2@CoAl-LDH-modified asphalt. All of these contributed to better NOx photocatalytic degradation capability of TiO2@CoAl-LDH-modified asphalt. This study promotes the development of eco-friendly asphalt pavements.

Despite SO 2 being recognized as a catalyst poisoning substance, a trace amount can enhance the acidity of the NH 3 -SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, which facilitates NH 3 adsorption and accelerates the reaction rate according to the Eley-Rideal mechanism. In this study, monoatomically dispersed Ce atoms were doped into the MoTiO x lattice to regulate the quantity and distribution of sulfate. This regulation was achieved by leveraging the stronger affinity of SO 2 to Ce, thus maximizing the acidifying effect of SO 2 to boost the NH 3 -SCR performance of the catalyst. The catalyst demonstrated the ability to maintain over 80 % NO x conversion for at least 144 hours in the presence of high concentration SO 2 (250 ppm). A detailed examination of the surface dynamics after SO 2 introduction revealed that NH 4 (SO 4 ) 2 , formed on the surface, converted to NH 4 HSO 4 . The decomposition of NH 4 HSO 4 extracted lattice oxygen from the catalyst, leading to an increase in oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface as the duration of SO 2 exposure increased. The surface-adsorbed oxygen, brought about by these oxygen vacancies, was readily activated, which promoted the dehydrogenation process of NH 3 and the progression of NH 3 -SCR. Further, based on the discovery of the unique phenomenon and mechanism of NH 4 HSO 4 decomposition that generates oxygen vacancies, gases containing poisonous SO 2 were utilized for the pretreatment of the catalyst to optimize its surface and enhance its sulfur resistance (fighting poison with poison). The results demonstrated that the pretreated catalyst rapidly achieved optimal NO x conversion and maintained catalytic stability for over 240 h even in the presence of 250 ppm SO 2 without any decrease in activity. This research innovatively leveraged the poisonous SO 2 to optimize the catalyst's surface, thereby achieving higher catalytic performance and sulfur resistance, which offers valuable insights into the design of novel sulfur-resistant catalysts.

The integration of lubricant oil additives or biofuels compels the Passive NO x Adsorber (PNA) within automotive exhaust after-treatment systems to withstand chemical poisoning from contaminants such as phosphorus (P). For the first time, lanthanum (La) has been employed to enhance the operational efficacy of Pd-loaded small-pore SSZ-13 zeolite (i.e., Pd-SSZ-13) in the presence of phosphorus species. Our findings reveal that La modification significantly bolsters the resilience of Pd-SSZ-13 against P-induced deactivation during the cold-start phase. Furthermore, we have elucidated a pronounced reduction in the degradation of active cationic Pd 2 + ions and Brønsted acid sites within the Pd-SSZ-13 framework upon the introduction of La. Notably, La not only exerts a stabilizing influence on the framework aluminum at the Brønsted acid sites but also effectively mitigates the interaction between the active Pd 2+ species and phosphorus, thereby preventing the formation of metaphosphate and its subsequent conversion into bulk PdO x aggregates. This research offers profound insights, particularly concerning the utilization of La to augment the resistance of Pd-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts against poisoning by various chemical poisons (such as alkali metals or sulfur) and to enhance their high-temperature hydrothermal stability.

Novel catalysts with high activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR) at low temperatures are highly demanded. In this study, mixed-node metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), e.g. Mn@CuBTC with controlled Mn composition in Cu3(BTC)2, were fabricated using postsynthetic exchange method and their structural characteristics and catalytic performances for NH3-SCR reaction were assessed. A series of analyses in terms of structure, surface morphology, texture, and chemical state determined that Mn ions were successfully incorporated into the Cu3(BTC)2 crystal lattice as well as adsorbed on the walls of nanopores in the framework. The pore sizes can be finely tuned in the presence of Mn ions in the cages, which significantly suppressed water adsorption. The NH3-SCR activity of Mn@CuBTC exhibited nearly 100% NOx conversion rate in the temperature range (230–260°C). The superior NH3-SCR performance is attributed to the proper pore sizes, reduced water content, and the synergistic effect between manganese and copper ions in the MOF structure, which enhanced NH3 bound to the active Lewis sites.

Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation and ion-exchange methods, and both the catalysts were hydrothermally treated at 750 °C in 10 vol% H2O/air for 24 h. Subsequently, the as-received and hydrothermally treated catalysts were exposed to a sulfur poisoning treatment at 350 °C in 100 ppm SO2/10 vol% H2O/air for 24 h and examined for NOx conversion. Sulfur poisoning considerably decreased the NOx conversion efficiency of the catalysts at low temperatures. In contrast, it improved the high-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activities of the as-received catalysts. The ion-exchange-prepared catalysts displayed higher sulfur tolerance than the impregnation-prepared catalysts at 150–350 °C. The electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and H2-temperature-programmed reduction results showed that sulfur poisoning significantly influenced the migration of the copper species and thereby the amount of active isolated Cu2+. More dispersed CuSO4 was produced on the ion-exchange-prepared catalysts than on the impregnation-prepared catalysts after sulfur poisoning. The dispersed CuSO4 showed considerably higher SCR activity than the crystalline CuSO4. Both the dispersed CuSO4 and remaining isolated Cu2+ determined the low-temperature SCR behavior of the sulfur-poisoned catalysts.
