Developing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is critical for scaling rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we propose an integrated “etching–doping–phosphorization/carbonization” route to synthesize Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunctions anchored on B,N,P co-doped carbon (Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC). Firstly, boric acid etching of the ZIF(Zn, Co, Ni) generates a bird-nest-like porous framework and simultaneously introduces boron; subsequent phosphorization/carbonization at 1000 °C yields Ni 2 P/Co 2 P nanocrystals uniformly anchored on the B, N, P co-doped carbon. It is confirmed that the carbon framework exhibits abundant defects and contains B, N, and P atoms chemically bonded to the matrix. This structure possesses a high surface area and a through-pore network, which ensure the exposure of active sites and facilitate rapid mass transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that boron doping markedly decreases charge density and upshifts the d-band center of Co sites in the Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunction (from −1.26 to −0.87 eV), thereby raising the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limiting potential (from 0.34 to 0.69 V) and lowering the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) theoretical overpotential (from 0.89 to 0.54 V). Benefiting from these features, Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC in alkaline media delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V (vs. 0.85 V for 20% Pt/C) and an OER overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (vs. 308 mV for RuO 2 ). A lab-fabricated ZAB achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.586 V, a peak power density of 180.8 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 816.2 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 1159.0 Wh kg Zn −1 , and 600 h stable cycling.

The incorporation of oxyanion groups offers a greater potential for enhancing the activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts compared to traditional metal cations doping, owing to their unique configurations and high electronegativity. However, the incorporation of oxyanion groups that differ from those derived from the oxidation of anions in transition metal monoxides poses significant challenges, thereby limiting further applications of oxyanion group modification approach. Herein, we present a novel sulfate salt assistant approach to fabricate Fe-doped Ni 2 P modified with SO 4 2− /carbon (Fe-Ni 2 P-S/C) nanofibers as highly efficient OER electrocatalyst. The optimized Fe-Ni 2 P-S/C nanofibers display superb OER activity, requiring low overpotentials of 266, 323, and 357 mV at 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the co-adsorption of PO 4 3− and SO 4 2− on the surface of reconstructed electrocatalyst can reduce the energy barrier of rate-determining step, thereby resulting in enhanced OER activity. The present study emphasizes the crucial role played by anion groups in OER activity as well as proposes a novel approach for incorporating anion groups into electrocatalysts.

The development of highly active and stable noble metal-free electrocatalysts of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under both acidic and basic conditions for renewable-energy conversion techniques is of great significance. Herein, a practical in situ synthesis strategy for a three-dimensional Ni2P polyhedron with a hierarchically porous structure was presented, which was efficiently obtained from a nickel centered metal–organic frameworks (MOF-74-Ni) by direct low-temperature phosphorization. The as-prepared Ni2P polyhedron showed a high BET surface area (175.0 m2·g–1), hierarchically porous property, and outstanding metal dispersion, which well inherited the morphology and porosity of its MOF precursor. Compared with Ni2P particles obtained from a nonporous precursor, the as-prepared Ni2P polyhedron used as electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance toward the HER, with a low overpotential of 158 mV to produce the cathodic current density of 10 mA cm–2. A small Tafel slope of 73 mV per decade is obtained for Ni2P polyhedron, which revealed a Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism during the HER. In addition, benefiting from the structural stability, the porous Ni2P polyhedron used as a electrocatalyst showed satisfactory long-term durability for the HER in acidic media.

The activity and durability of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts are critical determinants for the energy efficiency and economics of fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we introduce a heterojunction–vacancy coengineering strategy that couples Ni2P/Co2P heterojunctions with phosphorus vacancies (VP) within mesoporous N,P-doped carbon nanospheres (Ni2P/Co2P-VP-NPCs). This catalyst is synthesized by converting mesoporous polydopamine nanospheres via high-temperature phosphidation and H2 reduction. The resulting structure exhibits outstanding bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance. For the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the half-wave potential (E1/2) is 0.85 V (vs RHE) with a limiting diffusion current density (jd) of 5.87 mA cm–2 and 96.67% current retention over 24 h in 0.1 M KOH. For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), an overpotential of 277 mV (@10 mA cm–2) is achieved with 94.57% current retention over 24 h in 1.0 M KOH. In a rechargeable zinc–air battery, Ni2P/Co2P-Vp-NPCs delivers a peak power density of 141.9 mW cm–2, excellent specific capacity (797.3 mAh g–1), and high energy density (1004.6 Wh·kgZn–1), sustaining 600 h cycling at 10 mA cm–2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Ni2P/Co2P heterojunction downshifts the d-band center of Co cites, lowering the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for the potential-determining steps (*OH → OH– in ORR and *O → *OOH in OER), while phosphorus vacancies increase charge density of adjacent Co sites, facilitating interfacial charge transfer and boosting durability. This cooperative modulation precisely tunes the local electronic structure, providing a practical route to high-performance transition-metal catalysts for rechargeable zinc–air batteries.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is considered as one of the promising pathways to settle the energy crises and environmental issues by utilizing solar energy. In this paper, noble-metal-free Ni 2 P was used as cocatalyst to enhance g-C 3 N 4 for photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Characterization results indicated that Ni 2 P nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto g-C 3 N 4 , which can significantly contribute to accelerate the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron. The hydrogen evolution rate reached ∼ 270 µmol h −1 g −1 and the apparent quantum yield (AQY) was ∼ 2.85% at 420 nm. Meanwhile, there is no obviously decrease of the hydrogen production rate even after 36 h under visible light illumination. In addition, the mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was also elaborated in detail. Graphical

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as the foremost stumbling block to generate cost-effective clean fuels has received extensive attention in recent years. But, it still maintains the challenge to manipulate the geometric and electronic structure during single reaction process under the same conditions. Herein, we report a simple self-template strategy to generate honeycomb-like Ni 2 P/N,P–C hybrids with preferred electronic architecture. Experiments coupled with theoretical results revealed that the synthesized catalyst has two characteristics: firstly, the unique honeycomb-like morphology not only enables the fully utilization of catalytic active sites but also optimizes the mass/electron transportation pathway, which favor the diffusion of electrolyte to accessible active sites. Secondly, N,P–C substrate, on the one hand, largely contributes the electronic distribution near Fermi level (E F ) thus boosting its electrical conductivity. On the other hand, the support effect result in the upshift of d-band center and electropositivity of Ni sites, which attenuates the energy barrier for the adsorption of OH − and the formation of ∗OOH. In consequence, the optimized Ni 2 P/N,P–C catalysts feature high electrocatalytic activity towards OER (a low overpotential of 252 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 ) and 10 h long-term stability, the outstanding performance is comparable to most of transition metal catalysts. This work gives a innovative tactics for contriving original OER electrocatalysts, inspirng deeper understanding of fabricating catalysts by combining theoretical simulation and experiment design.

Transition metal phosphides as battery electrode materials for energy storage have attracted tremendous attention owing to their high specific capacity and safety. However, challenges remain toward their ultimate applications in full potential, such as agglomeration of active materials during electrode fabrication and pulverization of electrode structure associated with volume changes during the long-term charge-discharge process. Here, for the first time, sandwich-like Ni 2 P nanoarray/nitrogen-doped graphene nanoarchitecture (Ni 2 P/NG/Ni 2 P) is designed as a novel battery anode for both sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The as-prepared Ni 2 P/NG/Ni 2 P nanoarchitecture exhibits an excellent cycling stability with a high capacity retention of 188 mAh g −1 (57% of its initial capacity) at 0.5 A g −1 over 300 cycles as a SIB anode. Simultaneously, the synthesized nanoarchitecture delivers a capacity of 417 mA h g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 after 100 cycles when applied as anode for LIBs. The outstanding performance should be attributed to the highly conductive graphene intermediary that facilities the fast transport of electrons and the reinforced interaction between Ni 2 P and the nitrogen-doped graphene matrix that stabilizes the hybrid structure upon volume expansion during discharging. The excellent cycling stability, high capacity combined with the facile synthesis procedure position the sandwich-like Ni 2 P/NG/Ni 2 P nanoarchitecture a new kind of prospective anode material for SIBs and LIBs.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have higher theoretical capacity and higher energy density, so they are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices. However, electrolyte-soluble polysulfides cause a shuttle effect and lead to poor cycle stability. This is one of the main obstacles to the practical applications of LSB technology. To overcome this problem, here, we report polar Ni2P hollow microspheres, with multilayer nesting, as sulfur host materials. Specifically, the multilayer polar Ni2P can simultaneously act as a multilayer physical barrier and chemical adsorption material. In addition, the Ni2P microspheres serve as activation catalysts, accelerating the redox reaction kinetics. The above features allow the structure to effectively suppress the shuttle effect and improve the discharge capacity and cycle stability of LSB. For example, the three-dimensional printed Ni2P@S (3DP-Ni2P@S) cathode can provide an initial capacity of 682 mAh/g, obtaining high cycle stability with low-capacity attenuation of 0.0072% per cycle for 400 cycles under 2C. Even when the sulfur loading is increased from 6.1 to 9.3 mg/cm2, this material still shows good capacity retention. This work inspires the design of multifunctional cathode materials and paves a new path for the development of Li–S batteries.

In this study, Ni 2 P-Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S (NPCZS) composites were synthesized by coupling tetrapod bundle Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S (CZS) and coralline-like Ni 2 P (NP) via a simple calcination method. CZS shows outstanding activity in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (1.31 mmol h −1 ), owing to its unique morphology and heterophase homojunctions (ZB/WZ), which accelerate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. After coupling with NP, the photoactivity of NPCZS was enhanced, and the maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 1.88 mmol h −1 was reached at a NP content of 12 wt%, which was 1.43 times higher than that of pure CZS. The experimental results of the photocatalytic activity, viz. photoluminescence spectra, surface photovoltage spectra, and electrochemical test showed that the enhanced photoactivity of NPCZS should be attributed to the synergistic effects of the novel tetrapod-bundle morphology, heterophase homojunctions, and decoration of the NP co-catalyst. Moreover, the as-prepared NPCZS composites exhibited excellent photostability and recyclability. Herein, we propose a possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

A non-noble-metal hybrid catalyst (Ni2P/NPC-P), composed of N,P-doped porous carbon decorated with surface P-enriched Ni2P nanoparticles, is developed to address the urgent challenges associated with mass production of clean hydrogen fuel. The synthesis features one-pot pyrolysis of inexpensive fluid catalytic cracking slurry, graphitic carbon nitride, and inorganic salts, followed by a feasible surface phosphidation process. As a non-noble metal catalyst, Ni2P/NPC-P demonstrates excellent performance in hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolytes with a low overpotential of 73 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 (η10) and a small Tafel slope of 56 mV dec–1, meanwhile exhibits durability with no significant η10 change after 2000 catalytic cycles. Theoretical calculation reveals that the negatively charged P-enriched surface accelerated the rate-determining transformation and desorption of OH*. In overall water splitting, the electrocatalyst achieves a low η10 of 1.633 V, promising its potential in the cost-effective mass production of hydrogen fuel.

Graphical Cathode materials : A 3D conductive nanoporous polar composite has been constructed as a host material for a lithium/sulfur battery; this material dramatically enhances the reaction kinetics and deepens the reaction depth under a high areal loading mass of sulfur (see figure). Sulfur cathodes have attracted significant attention as next-generation electrode material candidates due to their considerable theoretical energy density. The main challenge in developing long-life Li–S batteries is to simultaneously suppress the shuttle effect and high areal mass loading of sulfur required for practical applications. To solve this problem, we have designed a novel nickel phosphide nanoporous composite derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as sulfur host materials. Homogeneous distribution of Ni 2 P nanoparticles significantly avoids soluble polysulfides migrating out of the framework through strong chemical interactions, and the conductive 3D skeleton offers an accelerating electron transport. As a result, S@Ni 2 P/NC has exhibited an enhanced performance of 1357 mAh g −1 initially at 0.2 C (1 C=1675 mA g −1 ) and remaining at 946 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles. Even at an areal mass loading of sulfur as high as 4.6 mg cm −2 , the electrode still showed an excellent specific capacity of 918 mAh g −1 .

The electronic modulation and morphology control of electrocatalysts are effective strategies to improve their catalytic performance. Herein, MoO 2 -MoO 3 /Ni 2 P nanoflowers were fabricated on the skeleton of conductive nickel foam as an electrocatalyst with enhanced performance via a universal hydrothermal and phosphating method. The introduction of P and Mo into the nickel-based catalyst through the co-doping strategy effectively adjusted the electronic structure of the Ni active sites, thereby significantly improving the performance of the catalyst. Particularly, the introduction of Mo allowed adjusting the morphology of the material, thereby increasing the electrochemical active area and promoting the exposure of more active sites. This strategy for improving the electrocatalyst’s performance in urea-assisted water splitting will provide a new concept for the simultaneous mitigation of the energy crisis and environmental contamination.
