Alkaline nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries are considered as one of the most promising rechargeable battery systems. However, the poor cycling stability of the Ni cathode limit their service life. Herein, a conductive polymer (PEDOT:PSS) encapsulated Ni 3 S 2 hollow nanorod structure via facile immersion is proposed. PEDOT:PSS coating layer can not only provide adhesion for Ni 3 S 2 nanorods to prevent Ni 3 S 2 from falling off the substrate during cycling, but also facilitate electron transfer via the complete conductive pathway. The hollow nanorods structure of Ni 3 S 2 is beneficial to mitigate the volume change and accelerate the rapid transport of ions. Besides, a gel electrolyte with double network porous structure in our battery system is well designed. The ionic association of sodium alginate on Zn 2+ can effectively reduce the activity of bound water molecules in the solvation sheath of Zn 2+ , inhibit the side reaction and dendrite generation through the ion-confinement effect, to achieve uniform deposition of zinc ions . As a consequence, the as-designed quasi-solid-state flexible Ni-Zn battery demonstrates a high specific capacity of 1.06 mAh cm −2 (276.04 mAh g −1 ) at 8 mA cm −2 and an ultra-long cycle stability over 10,000 cycles with a capacity retention of 88.96% at 30 mA cm −2 .

Exploring low-cost and high-efficiency OER catalysts is still a challenge. In this paper, self-supporting catalyst-Ni 3 S 2 @FeCrMoS x /NF was prepared using metal organic frameworks as templates. The morphology of the pre-catalyst has been deeply restructured after the sulfidation reaction, which significantly changes the composition and catalytic performance of the catalyst. The overpotential of Ni 3 S 2 @FeCrMoS x /NF is only 144 mV and 241 mV at a current density of 10 and 50 mA cm −2 respectively, the Tafel slope is as low as 45 mV dec −1 . And it can maintain good electrochemical stability at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . The outstanding OER performance of Ni 3 S 2 @FeCrMoS x /NF can be attributed to the increase of electrochemical surface area after sulfidation, the synergistic effect among multi-metals and the synergistic effect of polymetallic sulfides generated by sulfidation.

The rational design and controllable synthesis of metal–carbon composites as low cost and efficient catalysts have become the focus of research on non-enzymatic glucose detection. Herein, nickel sulfide nanocrystals encapsulated/dispersed by bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Ni 3 S 2 @NCNT) are facilely synthesized by pyrolysis and sulfuration of Ni 2+ -dicyandiamide complex. During the pyrolysis, nickel nanoparticles are formed to promote the growth of NCNTs, while the NCNTs can disperse Ni nanoparticles to prevent them from oxidation and aggregations. The synergistic effects between Ni 3 S 2 active sites and NCNTs also facilitate electronic transfer and enhance catalytic performances. Thus, Ni 3 S 2 @NCNT demonstrates excellent performances on glucose oxidation with unprecedented sensitivity (1447.64 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), low detection limit (0.14 μM), and wide linear range (0.46 μM-3.19 mM). Furthermore, as-fabricated sensors with superior performances indicate promising application prospects on non-enzymatic glucose detection in artificial sweat. This study will provide a general strategy for the controllable fabrication of catalysts with similar structures for other applications.

We report a template method by rationally designing a self-supported Ni 3 S 2 nanosheet-wrapped ZnO nanorod (Ni 3 S 2 @ZnO) standing vertically on Ni foam surface. In this work, an organic molecule of 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) using as a structural director, which is commonly used in metal–organic frameworks(MOFs), has been adopted to link those Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets forming a shear-wall structure. This special morphology with multi-dimension (2D with 1D) exhibits advantages on the high capacitance of about 3546 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 . Besides this, Ni 3 S 2 @ZnO can deliver an extraordinarily capacitance of 1872 F g −1 even at a high current density of 25 A·g −1 , which in the meantime displayed a good capacity retention of 70.3% after 10,000 cycles. An asymmetric supercapacitor was then constructed, performing a quite stable capacitance of about 197 F g −1 at a high current density of 15 A g −1 for 5000 cycles and a sufficient energy density of 140 Wh kg −1 , which proves its potential on lighting up six red LEDs in practical usage.

Large-scale commercialization of water splitting is still challenging due to the lack of efficient, cost-effective and robust electrodes. In this work, Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 heterointerfaced nanotubes on Ni foam (Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 HNTs/Ni) have been successfully developed via a two-step hydrothermal method as a highly efficient, robust and flexible bifunctional electrodes for water splitting. Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 HNTs are composed of inner 1D Co 9 S 8 nanotubes surrounded by outer 2D Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets . Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 HNTs/Ni electrode achieves 10 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 85 mV for H 2 evolution reaction (HER) and 50 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 281 mV for O 2 evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH solution, substantially better than that on single-phased Co 9 S 8 nanotubes and Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets on Ni foam. The reason is most likely due to formation of defect-rich heterointerfaces between Co 9 S 8 nanotubes and Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets, and the significant change of binding energies of Co 2p and Ni 2p level between the Co 9 S 8 and Ni 3 S 2 , leading to the synergistic effect on the enhanced catalytic activity for HER and OER. The robust and flexibility of Co 9 S 8 –Ni 3 S 2 HNTs/Ni electrodes are demonstrated in an alkaline electrolyzer, delivering 10 mA cm −2 electrolysis current at a cell voltage of 1.59 V, one of the best bifunctional electrodes for water splitting. Owing to the fact that reaction occurs at the defects-rich heterointerfaces, the Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 HNTs/Ni electrodes are structurally very stable.

Three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterials have received significant attention for large-scale functional applications due to their large specific surface areas as well as desired electrical, physicochemical, and catalytic properties. Herein, we present a facile and effective synthetic route for in situ grown 3D hierarchical Ni3S2 superstructures (rod-like arrays and nanoforest patterns) on nickel foam. This handy strategy endows the Ni3S2 superstructures with large surface active areas, porosity, and macro-/mesoporous structures. We have shown that these materials can serve as highly active, binder-free, bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, these materials were found to provide a ∼100% faradaic yield towards both HER and OER and exhibit remarkable catalytic stability (for >50 h).

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been a hot topic as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis owing to their superior specific surface area, plentiful metal active sites and modifiable morphology and composition. Nonetheless, the low electronic conductivity, restricted active sites and lack of structural robustness in MOFs impede their efficacy as catalysts in water electrolysis processes. Herein, nickel thiophenedicarboxylic framework@Ni 3 S 2 (Ni-TDC@Ni 3 S 2 ) composites were prepared on a nickel foam substrate via a two-step hydrothermal method. The results indicate that Ni 3 S 2 not only regulates the morphology and local electronic structure of Ni-TDC, but also enhances the structural stability, which leads to the superior OER performance with an overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slop of 50.76 mV dec −1 . Furthermore, the assembled overall water electrolysis device with Ni-TDC@Ni 3 S 2 and RuNi-TDC as anode and cathode electrodes requires the voltage of only 1.50 V at a current density 10 mA cm −2 , and it can run stably for more than 70 h. This study provides a new idea for enhancing the electronic conductivity of MOF-based electrocatalysts for efficient water oxidation.

This work reports a synergistic dual‑engineering strategy that integrates heterointerface construction with cationic modulation for developing high‑performance supercapacitor electrodes. Three‑dimensional V‑doped Ni 3 S 2 /MnS nanoflower heterostructures are successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal‑sulfidation method. The in situ‑formed heterojunctions create built‑in electric fields that accelerate charge transfer, while V 3+ doping optimizes the electronic structure and provides additional redox‑active sites. Benefiting from this rational design, the V‑Ni 3 S 2 /MnS electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 2725 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , retains 1700 F g −1 (62.4% retention) at 10 A g −1 , and maintains 92.4% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. Theoretical calculations confirm the enhanced charge‑transfer kinetics in the heterostructure. When assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor with activated carbon, the full cell achieves an energy density of 66.3 Wh kg −1 at 1500 W kg −1 . To enhance the specific capacitance as well as maintain satisfactory rate performance of nickel hydroxide and nickel sulfide, in this work, the ultra-fine nickel-tin nanoparticles with high conductivity are selected to synthesize Ni 3 Sn 2 @Ni(OH) 2 and Ni 3 Sn 2 @Ni 3 S 2 nanoflowers. Alloy as the core material improves the electrical conductivity of the composite, and the nanosheets prepared by electrochemical corrosion effectively avoid aggregation as well as increase the active sites of the electrode material. By adjusting the corrosion time, the Ni 3 Sn 2 @Ni(OH) 2 with better morphology displays a high specific capacitance (1277.37C g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) and good rate performance (1028C g −1 at 20 A g −1 ). After sulfurization, the optimal Ni 3 Sn 2 @Ni 3 S 2 perfectly retains the morphological characterizations of the precursor and exhibits ultra-high specific capacitance (1619.02C g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) as well as outstanding rate performance (1312C g −1 at 20 A g −1 ). The samples before and after vulcanization both have the excellent electrochemical properties, which is attributed to the rational design and construction of the alloy-based core–shell nanostructures. Besides, the all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) is assembled by Ni 3 Sn 2 @Ni 3 S 2 as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, displaying outstanding energy density of 70.54 Wh kg −1 at 808.67 W kg −1 and excellent cycling stability (93.21 % after 10,000 cycles). This work provides a novel ingenuity for synthesizing high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Heterostructures formed by combining semiconductor materials with different band structures can provide work functions, d-band positions and electronic properties different from bulk materials and are considered as an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity through electronic modification. In this study, an efficient MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF heterojunction material was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method. With the help of flake Ni(OH)2 synthesized in the first step, growth sites were provided for flake Ni3S2. The electronic structure of Ni3S2 was optimized by Fe doping, while the construction of the MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2 heterostructure allowed the catalyst to expose more active sites. MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF exhibited a small charge transfer resistance and excellent electrocatalytic performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm−2, only low overpotentials of 148 mV and 118 mV were required for the oxygen precipitation reaction (OER) and hydrogen precipitation reaction (HER), respectively. Notably, when MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF is used as the anode and cathode for overall hydrolysis, only 1.51 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, demonstrating its great potential for application in hydrolysis. This work provides a feasible idea for the rational construction of non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance.

Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.

Developing efficient and promising non-noble catalysts that can promote both the HER and OER in the same electrolyte is vital. Currently, these reported bifunctional catalysts show only moderate electrocatalytic water-splitting performance, which is much lower than expected. In addition, most of these promising nonprecious electrocatalysts work well only at small current densities (e.g. 10 mA cm−1), but at large current densities their stability and activity are far from satisfactory for practical applications. Herein, we have successfully constructed an urchin-like Ni3S2@Ni3B heterostructure electrocatalyst on Ni plates. The resulting material exhibits great catalytic activities for both the HER and OER, even at large current densities, reaching a current density of 1000 mA cm−l at relatively low applied overpotentials of 517 and 632 mV, respectively. The excellent catalytic performance of Ni3S2@Ni3B/NP is found to benefit from the effective integration of the unique surface structure and the interface electronic structure.
