Preparation of pyridine N-doped metal-free Li–O2 battery cathode by one-step

Hongyu Dong,Ke Li,Yiwen Wang,Yanhong Yin,Shuting Yang

Lithium-oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries are an ideal energy storage device, but the problems of the cathode still hinder their development. In this work, a metal-free, binder-free and in situ pyridine N-doped cathode of Li–O 2 batteries is synthesized in one step by electrospinning. Meanwhile, the effect of carbonization temperature on cathode is discussed in detail. The content of pyridine N in the cathode is the highest at the carbonization temperature of 700 °C, and it is also the most effective for the reversible formation and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 . In terms of Li–O 2 batteries performance, when the charge and discharge current density is 100 mA g −1 and the discharge voltage is greater than 2 V, the discharge specific capacity and discharge capacity can reach 27900 mAh g −1 and 27.9 mAh respectively. In addition, when the limited specific capacity is 1000 mAh g −1 , the batteries can work stably for 85 cycles under the same conditions. Therefore, the high-performance cathode which synthesized in one step by electrospinning is expected to promote the commercial application of Li–O 2 batteries.

Formation and mechanical properties of Y-substituted (Ce0.2Zr0.2La0.2Sm0.2Nd0.2)O2-δ high-entropy fluorite oxide

Bo Ma,Zhiqin Wen,Jiedong Qin,Taoyi Lu,Li Tang,Zhenyu Wu,Yuhong Zhao

In this paper, in order to improve the mechanical properties of high-entropy fluorite oxides (HEFOs), five equimolar multicomponent oxides were synthesized by solid-phase reaction method by using element Y replacing one of the five cations in (Ce 0.2 Zr 0.2 La 0.2 Sm 0.2 Nd 0.2 )O 2- δ . The substitution of La, Sm or Nd in (Ce 0.2 Zr 0.2 La 0.2 Sm 0.2 Nd 0.2 )O 2- δ with Y element are able to form single-phase HEFOs at 1600 °C, while Ce 4+ and Zr 4+ replaced by Y 3+ contains a large number of secondary phase. The former three components are almost dense and smooth, and all the elements are uniformly distributed with no obvious segregation and agglomeration. The Ce 3+ concentration of Y-substituted Sm HEFOs is calculated to be 13.7%, yielding a nominal composition of (Ce 0.2 Zr 0.2 Y 0.2 Sm 0.2 Nd 0.2 )O 1.6863 . In addition, the HEFOs have the best mechanical properties with Vickers hardnesses, flexural strengths and fracture toughnesses of 15.12 GPa, 101.1 MPa and 7.88 MPa-mm 1/2 , respectively, which have potential applications in high-performance structural materials.

Haoshen Huang,Huafeng Zhou,Nuowen Wu,Haiyang Yu,Weibo Gao,Jianghuan Shi,Jiahao Song,Yayun Zheng,Zhengfei Chen,Zixuan Liu

Graphical A simple carbon black (Ketjenblack, KB)-multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was fabricated and used as the air cathode in a Li-O 2 battery, achieving significantly improved specific capacity (up to 10611 mAh/g carbon ), rate capability and cyclability than pristine KB, owing to the synergy of KB's abundant surface area for accommodation of discharge products and MWCNTs’ long-range electronic conductivity. A simple carbon black (Ketjenblack, KB)-multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was fabricated and used as the air cathode in a Li-O 2 battery where MWCNTs primarily serve as microscopic cables to enhance long-range electronic conductivity. With optimal KB:MWCNTs mass ratios, the composite exhibited significantly improved specific capacity (up to 10611 mAh/g carbon under 100 mAh/g carbon ), rate capability (up to 9598 mAh/g carbon under 500 mAh/g carbon ) and cyclability than pristine KB, owing to the synergy of KB's abundant surface area for accommodation of discharge products and MWCNTs’ long-range electronic conductivity to guide even and compact deposition of discharge products, and mitigate passivation/clogging of the air cathode surface during discharge. This strategy of using MWCNTs as microscopic cables could also be applied for other commercial materials to construct high-performance and low-cost air cathodes.

Ratiometric fluorescent capillary sensor for real-time dual-monitoring of pH and O2 fluctuation

Zhe Li,Xiaohui Wang,Xiuli Fu,Jinhua Liu,Yuanan Liu,Hongxin Zhang

The pH and O 2 are the two important parameters to evaluate environmental conditions, healthcare, and industrial processes. Herein, we developed a ratiometric fluorescent capillary-based dual-functional sensor for simultaneous monitoring of pH and O 2 fluctuations. The fluorescent sensor consists of a pH sensing unit and an O 2 sensing unit on both ends of the capillary inner wall. The ratiometric fluorescent pH sensing unit includes pH-sensitive probe HPTS and the reference dye Ce6, while the O 2 sensing unit is composed of O 2 -sensitive probe RuDP and the reference dye C6. Under single-wavelength excitation at 430 nm, the ratiometric fluorescent dual-functional sensor exhibits highly sensitive, selective and reproducible responses to both pH and O 2 . As for practical aqueous samples, the results about pH and O 2 levels obtained by our sensor are considerable consistent with commercial devices. Meanwhile, the dynamic changes of pH and O 2 levels during glucose catalysis by glucose oxidase can be detected in real-time and accurately. The dual-functional ratiometric fluorescent capillary transducer provides a significant potential platform for environmental monitoring and medical diagnosis.

Carbon vacancy engineering enables superior electron donation for O2 activation over platinum/carbon nitride

Yanping Li,Lizheng Chen,Tao Gan,Wenjuan Zhang,Xuefeng Chu,Wenxiang Zhang,Gang Liu

Defect engineering plays a crucial role in activating molecular oxygen by modulating the local electronic and geometric structures of active sites. However, defects in metal-free materials have received comparatively little attention in this context, particularly under thermal conditions, despite reports of the favorable electron-donating properties. To systematically compare how different vacancies modulate catalytic behavior, we prepared platinum (Pt) nanoparticles supported on nearly pristine carbon nitride with minimal vacancies (CN), carbon nitride with carbon vacancies (Cv-CN), and carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies (Nv-CN). Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that carbon vacancies induce stronger electron localization than nitrogen vacancies, resulting in a significant increase in electron density at Pt sites. The synergistic interaction between Pt atoms and adjacent nitrogen atoms surrounding carbon vacancies facilitates electron donation to the π* antibonding orbitals of adsorbed O 2 , thereby enhancing O 2 activation. Consequently, Pt supported on Cv-CN (Pt/Cv-CN) achieves a light-off temperature ( T 50 , the temperature for 50% toluene conversion) of 185 °C with only 0.1 wt% Pt, substantially lower than those of Pt supported on Nv-CN (Pt/Nv-CN, 202 °C) and Pt supported on CN (Pt/CN, 210 °C). This work elucidates the critical role of carbon vacancies in optimizing the electronic environment of carbon nitride and enhancing oxygen activation at the Pt-support interface, thereby providing a systematic strategy for designing high performance catalysts with minimal noble metal loading.

Catalytically enhanced power generation of a self-charging Zn-organic battery without O2-oxidation

Wenbo Dong,Yijun Pan,Mi Gan,Xiaofei Zhao,Maria Manzoor,Jinzhang Liu

Self-charging batteries based on organic cathodes and the oxidation mechanism are intriguing because the exhausted battery can be automatically recharged to resume the electrical energy output. A consensus is that the air or dissolved oxygen in electrolyte are indispensable in the self-charging process, which makes the battery impractical due to external air supply and the electrolyte evaporation from non-sealed batteries. Furthermore, organic cathodes generally exhibit low specific capacities. Here, a new self-charging mechanism is realized by blending Pt/C nanocatalysts with poly(1,5-naphthalenediamine, NAPD) to fabricate cathodes for aqueous Zn-polymer batteries. The discharged cathode can be self-charged to 1.16 V within 8 h while being immersed in electrolyte, without the need for dissolved oxygen. This endows a fully sealed coin cell with self-charging function. Owing to the catalytic activation of primary amino groups in poly(1,5-NAPD), the specific capacity is nearly doubled, reaching a high level of 310 mAh g −1 . The role of nanocatalyst in increasing the self-charging rate and voltage is discussed in detail. To demonstrate practical applications, a battery pack is made by loading thick cathodes and Zn anodes into a 3D-printed six-compartment case. This battery pack can be self-charged to 6.4 V and is used to power a walking robot.

Marangoni-driven assembly of HOF-PDMS composite membranes with enhanced CO2/O2 separation performance

Guowei Chen,Yang He,Shen Xiang,Yiping Zhao,Li Chen

Oxygenation membranes for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems require ultrathin, defect-free selective layers that simultaneously deliver high gas permeability, selectivity, and operational stability. Herein, we report a Janus composite membrane featuring a dense polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) selective layer integrated with a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-TGU-307), designed to overcome filler aggregation and transport limitations commonly encountered in ultrathin mixed-matrix membranes. A Marangoni convection-driven assembly strategy induces strong in-plane flow at the gas–liquid-solid interface, enabling uniform dispersion and horizontal embedding of HOF crystallites within the PDMS matrix. Theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that Marangoni flow suppresses capillary-driven aggregation, while a stable PDMS-HOF interfacial network forms polar gas-transport pathways and promotes interfacial CO 2 enrichment. As a result, the optimized M3-HOF membrane exhibits a high single-gas CO 2 permeance of 1883 GPU and an ideal CO 2 /O 2 selectivity of 5.2, measured at 0.1 MPa and 25 °C, together with an oxygen transfer rate of 219.8 mL·min −1 ·m −2 . The Janus architecture further provides excellent interfacial stability, effectively preventing liquid penetration (LEP > 0.6 MPa). Auxiliary evaluations demonstrate reduced protein adsorption and favorable blood-contacting compatibility, supporting its potential for membrane oxygenators. This computation-guided, Marangoni-driven fabrication strategy offers a scalable route for constructing high-performance oxygenation membrane with controlled ultrathin selective layers.

Microenvironment-responsive piezoelectric nanoreactors integrate O2 and H2 generation for efficient tumor sonodynamic therapy

Pengyuan Song,Xiaohui Chen,Yuchen Liu,Kang Fu,Yang Zhang,Jingwen Wang,Long Zhang,Jie Shen,Shuhui Yang,Xiangdong Kong,Shibo Wang,Jinjin Zhu

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has emerged as a research hotspot in tumor therapy due to its non-invasiveness, non-toxicity and high penetrability, as it activates sonosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for tumor cell ablation under ultrasound irradiation. However, its therapeutic efficacy is severely compromised by the rapid electron-hole recombination of sonosensitizers, tumor hypoxia and high intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels in the tumor microenvironment. Herein, we developed a nanoreactor AB@CZP@HO to achieve synergistic antitumor effects of SDT and hydrogen therapy. Based on carbon-doped hollow porous CZ, this material features unique carbon doping and oxygen vacancies that inhibit electron-hole recombination, thus enhancing its piezoelectric coefficient and ultrasound-induced ROS generation capacity. Pt atoms deposited on the CZ surface form CZP, whose catalase-like activity catalyzes the decomposition of intracellular hydrogen H 2 O 2 to produce O 2 , alleviating tumor hypoxia and providing more substrates for SDT. The loaded ammonia borane with high hydrogen storage capacity enables high-load intratumoral hydrogen delivery and pH-responsive release. The released H 2 disrupts the redox homeostasis and mitochondrial membrane integrity of tumor cells, synergizing with SDT. The surface-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) derivative HO depletes intratumoral GSH via affinity substitution reaction, further boosting SDT efficacy. This design integrates the rational fabrication of piezoelectric materials, tumor microenvironment remodeling and hydrogen therapy synergy, which collectively enhance the therapeutic efficacy of SDT. Statement of Significance This study aims to develop a nanoreactor (AB@CZP@HO) for highly efficient sonodynamic therapy (SDT) of tumors through the fabrication of a highly responsive piezoelectric sonosensitizer, modulation of the tumor microenvironment (TME), and synergy with hydrogen gas therapy. Hydrogen can disrupt the intracellular redox balance and impair the integrity of mitochondrial membranes, thereby enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of SDT and overcoming the limitations of SDT as a monotherapy. This multifunctional nanoreactor integrates multiple functional modules and is expected to provide a novel and effective strategy for tumor SDT, breaking through the limitations of existing therapeutic approaches. Oxygen-oxygen bond cleavage enables efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production via an *O2 dissociation pathway

Liu Qiong,Chen Tianxiang,Lo Tsz Woon Benedict,Wang Fuxian,Ouyang Gangfeng

Photocatalytic reduction of O 2 to H 2 O 2 is generally regarded to proceed through the *O 2 hydrogenation pathway (*O 2 → *OOH), which inevitably encounters a high energy barrier proton extraction process via cleavage of the H-O bond in H 2 O. Designing a K and Cs co-modified polymeric carbon nitride (CN-KCs) to create dual-end adsorption sites as frustrated Lewis pairs for O 2 , on which the O-O breaking energy is significantly reduced and a *O 2 dissociation pathway towards photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis is realized (*O 2  → 2*O, then *O + *H 2 O → H 2 O 2 ). The CN-KCs presents a competitive photocatalytic H 2 O 2 yield of 1806.6 μmolh −1 , a high quantum efficiency of 72.3% at 420 nm, and a solar-to-H 2 O 2 conversion efficiency of 6.1% with presence of biomass derivative. Here, we show that regulating dual-end adsorption sites opens a door to new *O 2 dissociation avenue for efficient conversion of O 2 to H 2 O 2 .

A scalable solar-driven photocatalytic system for separated H2 and O2 production from water

Fu Hui,Wu Yaqiang,Guo Yuhao,Sakurai Takuya,Zhang Qianqian,Liu Yuanyuan,Zheng Zhaoke,Cheng Hefeng,Wang Zeyan,Huang Baibiao,Wang Qian,Domen Kazunari,Wang Peng

Solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting offers a sustainable pathway to produce green hydrogen, yet its practical application encounters several challenges including inefficient photocatalysts, sluggish water oxidation, severe reverse reactions and the necessity of separating produced hydrogen and oxygen gases. Herein, we design and develop a photocatalytic system composed of two separate reaction parts: a hydrogen evolution cell containing halide perovskite photocatalysts (MoSe 2 -loaded CH(NH 2 ) 2 PbBr 3-x I x ) and an oxygen evolution cell containing NiFe-layered double hydroxide modified BiVO 4 photocatalysts. These components are bridged by a I 3 − /I − redox couple to facilitate electron transfer, realizing efficient overall water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 2.47 ± 0.03%. Additionally, an outdoor scaled-up setup of 692.5 cm 2 achieves an average solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 1.21% during a week-long test under natural sunlight. By addressing major limitations inherent in conventional photocatalytic systems, such as the cooccurrence of hydrogen and oxygen in a single cell and the resultant severe reverse reactions from hydrogen and oxygen recombination, this work introduces an alternative concept for photocatalytic system design, which enhances both efficiency and practicality.

Dissolved-O2–driven Mn single-atom enzyme for colorimetric detection of glutathione in food

Lin Wang,Yue Wang,Xiao-Jie Shi,Tian-Shun Song,Xiang-Ling Li,Jing-Jing Xie

Background Rapid, low-cost measurement of glutathione (GSH) is valuable for judging food freshness. However, many colorimetric assays depend on natural enzymes or added H 2 O 2 , which limits stability and use in real samples. Results We developed a manganese single-atom enzyme (Mn/SAE) with intrinsic oxidase-like activity to build an enzyme-free, H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric system for GSH. Mn/SAE uses dissolved O 2 to oxidize TMB to blue oxTMB; GSH reduces oxTMB back to TMB, producing a decrease in color and absorbance for readout. Under optimized conditions, both the solution assay and a paper-based analytical device (PAD) provide results within 10 min using smartphone R-channel quantification. The method shows good selectivity and performs well in real samples, tracking the expected decline of GSH in strawberries during storage. Significance This simple, low-cost, and portable approach enables on-site GSH analysis without enzymes or H 2 O 2 . The Mn/SAE colorimetric system offers practical value for freshness monitoring and can be adapted to other redox biomarkers in food-quality assessment.

Tracing chemical and biological O2 consumption in the subsurface by 18O isotope enrichment factors

Zhenchen Wan,Yuxuan Tan,Yunsong Zheng,Xiuli Li,Songhu Yuan

Dissolved O 2 (DO) levels in the shallow subsurface, controlled by both chemical and biological processes, play an important role in contaminant transformation and attenuation. However, methods for tracing chemical and biological DO consumption are not available. Here we show that oxygen isotope enrichment factors ( ε ) can be used to trace the mechanisms of chemical and biological O 2 consumption in the shallow subsurface. In batch solution experiments, the ε values for O 2 consumption by dissolved Fe(II), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and their mixtures at different C/Fe ratios (0.5∼20) were measured to range from -1.74 ‰ to -3.32 ‰. In the oxygenation of reduced clayed sediment suspension, the ε values were relatively small (-6.46 ‰) in the initial 15 h and increased to a large level (-18.14 ‰) afterward; while for the sand sediment suspension, the ε values were always small (ranging from -4.56 ‰ to -4.65 ‰) throughout the duration time of 24 h. Chemical probe and sterilized control experiments proved that the initial stage characterized with small ε values (<-10 ‰) was dominated by chemical O 2 consumption and the subsequent stage with large ε values (>-10 ‰) was dominated by biological O 2 consumption. As an effective indicator for distinguishing subsurface chemical and biological oxygen consumption pathways, ε will provide a new parameter for exploring carbon and nitrogen cycling and pollution transformation.
