Energy-efficient pervaporation (PV) membrane technology has shown significant potential for challenging liquid-liquid separations such as ethanol dehydration. However, its performance is highly temperature-dependent, and conventional bulk heating of the feed is energy-intensive and can damage membranes. To address this challenge, this study introduces an innovative strategy that synergistically combines photothermal and Joule heating within a novel PV device enabling precise and localized heating at the membrane interface. A tailored composite membrane was fabricated on polyacrylonitrile modified basalt fiber fabrics substrate, integrating carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and sodium alginate as a photothermal separation layer. The device employs a stainless-steel mesh as both a sealing gasket and a Joule heating layer, allowing targeted thermal regulation. The impacts of MWCNTs dose, applied voltage, and feed composition on ethanol dehydration performance, energy cost, as well as long-term stability, were experimentally evaluated. At 2.9 V and 1 sun, the optimal PV membrane (2 wt% MWCNTs) demonstrated a separation factor of 1313.64 and a flux of 1124.67 g m −2 h −1 for ethanol dehydration (90 wt%). The total energy consumption was reduced by over 80% compared with the traditional bulk heating process when including the energy consumption of the solar simulator and electricity. The PV membrane also maintained excellent performance during a 120-h stability test. The mechanism, cost and performance of the novel PV device were also revealed for academic and industrial interests. This work provides a novel, efficient, and sustainable pathway for advancing PV membrane separation technology.

Though MOFs show potential for organic dye wastewater treatment, their practical use is limited by poor recoverability of powdered MOF-based adsorbents/catalysts. To address the recovery issues and agglomeration tendencies inherent in metal-organic framework (MOF) powders, this study presents the synthesis of ZIF-67/PAN composite nanofibers via an electrospinning technique, effectively immobilizing ZIF-67 nanoparticles onto a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) matrix. The resulting composite exhibited a high specific surface area of 663.06 m 2 /g and demonstrated exceptional dual functionality for methylene blue (MB) removal. It achieved a high adsorption capacity of 1169.23 mg/g at 45 °C and enabled ultrafast catalytic degradation, achieving 100 % MB removal within 10 min through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that demethylation and ring-opening served as the dominant degradation pathways, facilitated by the generation of sulfate (SO 4 · - ) and hydroxyl (·OH) radicals via Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox cycling. The composite material demonstrated outstanding pH resilience across a broad range (pH 3–9) and significantly reduced the ecotoxicity of degradation intermediates. Furthermore, the ZIF-67/PAN fibers exhibited excellent reusability, maintaining high performance over five consecutive cycles with an efficiency loss of less than 8 %. This work provides a robust, scalable, and environmentally friendly strategy for industrial dyeing wastewater treatment.

The chelating membrane was prepared by introducing amidoxime groups on to the surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultra filtration (UF) membrane to remove simultaneously the metallic ions and organic pollutants from aqueous solution. The performance of chelating membrane were investigated in terms of membrane flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and removal rate of ions. The results showed that the amidoxime groups were successfully introduced onto PAN UF membrane, resulting in the rough membrane surface associated with increased hydrophobic properties. The chelating membrane exhibited a higher BSA rejection rate than original UF membrane, but had a relatively lower membrane flux. It was feasible to remove effectively Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ ions from aqueous solution by chelating membrane. Removal of metal ions for the chelating membrane followed this order: Cu 2+ > Pb 2+ > Cd 2+ . As to the least preferentially adsorbed ion (Cd 2+ ion), the removal rate could be significantly increased from 32% to73% in the presence of BSA due to the complexation of metal ion with protein.

Oil-containing emulsion pollution seriously endangers the ecological environment and human health, and it is urgent to solve the problem of oil-containing emulsion pollution. In membrane separation technology, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are being widely used to enhance the wettability of the membrane surface and separation efficiency. Here, electrospinning technics and the outstanding wetting properties of MOF are combined to improve the separation performance of oil-containing emulsions. PVP chains were successfully grafted on Zr-O clusters of UiO-66-NH 2 to prepare PVP-UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles, which were then loaded on the PAN nanofiber substrate with microspheres/fine fibers prepared by a continuous electrospinning-electrospray process. The result shows that the PAN nanofiber substrate loaded with 0.5 wt% PVP-UiO-66-NH 2 has the best separation efficiency and stable anti-fouling ability for different kinds of oil-in-water surfactant stabilized emulsions (TOC = 11.6 mg/L, R = 99.2% FRR = 94.4% for n-hexane-water emulsion). Therefore, the constructed nanofiber membrane is the favorable candidate for the efficient separation of oil-containing emulsions.

Multifunctional membranes capable of simultaneously separating oil–water emulsions and removing organic dyes from complex aqueous systems have garnered considerable attention in recent years. However, the facile fabrication of high-performance membranes that integrate both separation and adsorption functions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl alcohol–chitosan (PAN/PVA-CS) bilayer membrane with asymmetric wettability via electrospinning. The micro/nanostructures and surface wettability of the as-prepared membranes were precisely tailored by modulating the chitosan (CS) concentration. The resultant PAN/PVA-CS membrane exhibited an overall separation efficiency exceeding 97.5% for mechanically emulsified samples. Notably, the PVA-CS layer demonstrated superhydrophilicity and excellent underwater oleophobicity, enabling the gravity-driven simultaneous separation of oil-in-water emulsions and adsorption of water-soluble Congo red dye without requiring external pressure. The maximum adsorption capacity for Congo red reached 61.3 mg g−1, surpassing that of numerous reported membrane-based and adsorbent materials. Concurrently, the hydrophobic PAN layer in the bilayer structure enabled the separation of water-in-oil emulsions. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for the rational design of asymmetrically wettable multifunctional membranes with great potential for practical application in the purification of complex industrial wastewater containing both emulsified oils and soluble organic dyes.

The emergence of 5G/6G wireless communication, aerospace, and sophisticated electronics devices has rendered electromagnetic interference (EMI) a serious challenge to device reliability and signal integrity. This intensifying issue demands a lightweight, flexible, and absorption-dominated shielding material. In this study, we employed coaxial electrospinning to fabricate MXene/graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile core–shell nanofibers. This fabricated core–shell design features a conductive MXene-rich core encapsulated in a graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile shell, which enhances tensile strength, electrical conduction, dipole polarization, impedance matching, interfacial polarization, and internal reflections, thereby improving electromagnetic wave attenuation. The optimized core–shell nanofiber with a graphene oxide-to-MXene mass ratio of 1:2 exhibited a shielding effectiveness of 68.86 dB (99.99995% electromagnetic wave attenuation), an electrical conductivity of 150.0 S·cm–1, and a specific shielding effectiveness of 14,085 dB·cm2·g–1. In addition to blocking electromagnetic interference, the MXene/graphene oxide@polyacrylonitrile core–shell nanofibers exhibit improved ability to facilitate efficient heat dissipation and prevent localized overheating. This multifunctional core–shell nanofiber design offers a flexible, scalable route to developing next-generation materials for EMI shielding, infrared stealth, and thermal management, with potential applications in the electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries.

Ethylene causes faster deterioration of perishable crops during postharvest transportation and storage. The present study aimed to develop TiO2-coated nanofibers with efficient photocatalytic activities to enhance the degradation of fruit-emitted ethylene. The consecutive electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and TiO2deposition was successfully performed to produce PAN@TiO2nanofibers. The scanning electron microscopy results indicate the uniform distribution of TiO2nanoparticles on the surface of the PAN nanofiber. The PAN@TiO2composite nanofibers exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for ethylene degradation under low-intensity UV light irradiation. Furthermore, a tomato fruit-ripening test confirmed the effectiveness of the PAN@TiO2nanofibers. The PAN@TiO2nanofibers exhibited effective ethylene degradation and slowed the color shift and softening of the tomatoes during storage. The results suggest great potential for use of the PAN@TiO2composite nanofibers as ethylene scavenging packaging material for fresh fruits and vegetables.

The pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was coated on top of the PAN ultrafiltration membrane to form a PVA/PAN composite PV membranes for wastewater desalination. The composite membranes have high application value in industrial wastewater treatment. By varying the membrane fabrication parameters including the weight percent (wt%) of the PMDA, the crosslink temperature and duration, membrane with the best desalination performance was obtained. The composite membrane with a 2-μm-thick PVA selective layer containing 20 wt% of PMDA and being crosslinked at 100 °C for 2 h showed the highest NaCl rejection of 99.98% with a water flux of 32.26 L/(m 2 h) at 70 °C using the 35,000 ppm NaCl aqueous solution as feed. FTIR spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscope have been used to characterize the structures and properties of both the crosslinked PVA dense films and PVA/PAN composite membranes. The effects of the concentrations of PMDA, the crosslinking time and temperature to the membrane water contact angle, swelling degree, salt rejection and water flux were systematically studied.

Background and Aims
Better understanding of intrinsic control mechanisms of colonic motility will lead to better treatment options for colonic dysmotility. The aim was to investigate neurogenic and myogenic control mechanisms underlying pan-colonic motor patterns.
Methods
Analysis of in vitro video recordings of whole rat colon motility was used to explore motor patterns and their spatiotemporal organizations and to identify mechanisms of neurogenic and myogenic control using pharmacological tools.
Results
Study of the pan-colonic spatiotemporal organization of motor patterns revealed: fluid-induced or spontaneous rhythmic propulsive long distance contractions (LDCs, 0.4–1.5/min, involving the whole colon), rhythmic propulsive motor complexes (RPMCs) (0.8–2.5/min, dominant in distal colon), ripples (10–14/min, dominant in proximal colon), segmentation and retrograde contractions (0.1–0.8/min, prominent in distal and mid colon). Spontaneous rhythmic LDCs were the dominant pattern, blocked by tetrodotoxin, lidocaine or blockers of cholinergic, nitrergic or serotonergic pathways. Change from propulsion to segmentation and distal retrograde contractions was most prominent after blocking 5-HT 3 receptors. In the presence of all neural blockers, bethanechol consistently evoked rhythmic LDC-like propulsive contractions in the same frequency range as the LDCs, indicating the existence of myogenic mechanisms of initiation and propulsion.
Conclusions
Neurogenic and myogenic control systems orchestrate distinct and variable motor patterns at different regions of the pan-colon. Cholinergic, nitrergic and serotonergic pathways are essential for rhythmic LDCs to develop. Rhythmic motor patterns in presence of neural blockade indicate the involvement of myogenic control systems and suggest a role for the networks of interstitial cells of Cajal as pacemakers.

Emulsified oily wastewater threatens human health seriously, and traditional technologies are unable to separate emulsion containing small sized oil droplets. Currently, oil–water emulsions are usually separated by special wettability membranes, and researchers are devoted to developing membranes with excellent antifouling performance and high permeability. Herein, a novel, simple and low-cost method has been proposed for the separation of emulsion containing surfactants. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and then coated by polydopamine (PDA) by using self-polymerization reactions in aqueous solutions. The morphology, structure and oil-in-water emulsion separation properties of the as-prepared PDA@PAN nanofibrous membrane were tested. The results show that PDA@PAN nanofibrous membrane has superhydrophilicity and almost no adhesion to crude oil in water, which exhibits excellent oil–water separation ability. The permeability and separation efficiency of n-hexane/water emulsion are up to 1570 Lm−2h−1bar−1and 96.1%, respectively. Furthermore, after 10 cycles of separation, the permeability and separation efficiency values do not decrease significantly, indicating its good recycling performance. This research develops a new method for preparing oil–water separation membrane, which can be used for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation. Keywords:polyacrylonitrile;electrospinning;nanofibrous membrane;emulsion separation

A modified coaxial electrospinning process was used to prepare composite nanofibrous mats from a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) solution with the addition of different cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the sheath fluid and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution as the core fluid. This study investigated the conductivity of the as-spun solutions that increased significantly with increasing CNCs addition, which favors forming uniform fibers. This study discussed the effect of different CNCs addition on the morphology, thermal behavior, and the multilevel structure of the coaxial electrospun PMMA + CNCs/PAN composite nanofibers. A morphology analysis of the nanofibrous mats clearly demonstrated that the CNCs facilitated the production of the composite nanofibers with a core-shell structure. The diameter of the composite nanofibers decreased and the uniformity increased with increasing CNCs concentrations in the shell fluid. The composite nanofibrous mats had the maximum thermal decomposition temperature that was substantially higher than electrospun pure PMMA, PAN, as well as the core-shell PMMA/PAN nanocomposite. The BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) formula results showed that the specific surface area of the CNCs reinforced core-shell composite significantly increased with increasing CNCs content. The specific surface area of the composite with 20% CNCs loading rose to 9.62 m2/g from 3.76 m2/g for the control. A dense porous structure was formed on the surface of the electrospun core-shell fibers. Keywords:cellulose nanocrystals;coaxial electrospinning;core-shell structural nanofibers;thermal properties;fiber morphology

The hierarchical aminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/γ-AlOOH electrospun composite nanofibers were prepared by a combination of electrospinning process, chemical modification and hydrothermal reaction. The obtained membranes were carefully examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The hierarchical aminated PAN/γ-AlOOH composite nanofibers were proved to be good adsorbents toward Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. The adsorption process of the Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions could be described by Langmuir isotherm model and kinetics were found to follow the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The maximum adsorption capacities of hierarchical aminated PAN/γ-AlOOH electrospun composite nanofibers for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were 180.83 mg/g, 48.68 mg/g and 114.94 mg/g, respectively. The results proved that the synergetic adsorption effect between amine groups and γ-AlOOH crystals contributed to the high adsorption activity of the hierarchical aminated PAN/γ-AlOOH composite nanofibers. The obtained membranes can be potentially applied in heavy metal ions removal from wastewater effluents.
