Nylon is the general name of high molecular polymers with amide bonds repeat structure in the main chain. Because of its good wear resistance, excellent chemical resistance and outstanding impact resistance, it is widely used in various fields of national life, such as automobile parts, oil pipelines, electronic parts, gears, connectors, coating materials and medical applications. Using isocyanate terminated polyamide prepolymer as hard segment, polypropylene glycol as soft segment and triethanolamine as crosslinking agent, polyamide elastomer was flame retardant modified by adding reactive P flame retardant and P/N synergistic flame retardant mechanism. The sample was named IAHDP-x, in which IAHD is the synthetic hexamethylene diamine polyaitaconic acid, and x is the mass of the added flame retardant DDP. Its tensile properties, fatigue resistance, self-recovery and tear resistance were investigated. The results revealed that the synthesized phosphorus flame retardant (9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-[N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethylamino methylene)]-10-phenanthroline-10-oxide (DDP)) could not only enhance the flame retardancy, but also strengthen the mechanical properties of polyamide. Among them, the LOI and UL-94 of IAHDP-1.2 were 27.6% and V-0, respectively, indicating that it could be used as flame retardant material; Cyclic tensile test demonstrated that it had good fatigue resistance and self-recovery; Besides, the tear resistance of IAHDP-1.2 could reach 35.24 kJ/m 2 . Interestingly, IAHDP-1.2 also displayed shape memory characteristics, and the sample could be restored to its original state at 60°C. The synthetic IAHDP-x also had excellent flame retardancy, high mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, tear resistance, shape memory, so the material can be used in satellite wings, solar panels, electronic and electrical equipment, and smart materials.

This study utilized polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a compatibilizer, and prepared nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite films by blown film extrusion. The physical properties, including the mechanical performance, barrier characteristics, processing flow properties, and thermal properties, were evaluated, and the microstructure was estimated. The consequences showed that the NCC could significantly enhance the physical properties of the PLA nanocomposite film. When the NCC concentration was 3%, the tensile strength of the composite film was 45.02 MPa, and the melting index was 1.03 g/min, which were 17.85% and 6.40% greater than those of the PLA/PEG composite film, respectively. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the composite film with NCC was 5.438 × 10 −4 cm 3 /(m 2 ·d·Pa), which was 96.70% lower compared to the composite film without NCC. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that adding NCC and PEG could increase the stability of the PLA/PEG/NCC composite film, but NCC had little impact on the thermal properties of the PLA/PEG/NCC composite film. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the PLA, PEG and NCC had better compatibility and dispersion.

Degradable polyester elastomers are highly desirable for biomedical applications. Here, highly transparent and degradable aliphatic polyester elastomers were prepared using the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of commercial monomers, followed by a photo-crosslinking process. A series of the semi-crystalline copolyester (PMBL-co-PBL-co-PCL) precursors with different molecular weights and pendent vinyl contents were synthesized by one-pot ROCP of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MBL), ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL). Then, UV irradiation was applied to photo-crosslink the precursors to obtain several elastomers. The obtained aliphatic polyester elastomers (CPEs) displayed excellent mechanical properties with high tensile strength (11.3 MPa), high elongation at break (1300%) and high elastic recovery (about 99% after 10 hysteresis cycles). In addition, the elastomer showed much better stability than uncrosslinked (co)polyesters, but maintained degradability in the basic aqueous solution, with ~30% of the mass loss in 1 M NaOH solution after 30 days. Through efficient ROCP, we demonstrated a strategy to prepare degradable CPEs bearing high strength, good elasticity, excellent resilience and degradation capability, which can serve as sustainable elastomers for various applications.

Glass fibers (GFs) reinforced polymer composites display high mechanical performance but deteriorated flame retardancy due to the “candlewick effect” caused by fibers. To solve this problem, novel hierarchal hybrid glass fibers (GF@HBPPA@GO) were prepared by multistep coating of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), hyperbranched polyphosphoramide (HBPPA) and graphene oxide (GO) in sequence. Several GFs reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites were fabricated with the same GFs loading. PLA/GF@HBPPA@GO composite showed the highest limited oxygen index (LOI) value of 25.2% and much decreased peak heat release rate, total heat release and mass loss rate, corresponding to a drop of 23.2%, 16.6%, and 53.8% respectively compared with PLA/GF-APTES composite. Meanwhile, it maintained similar tensile and impact strength values. The improved flame retardancy was mainly attributed to the good synergistic effect of HBPPA and GO on generating high-yield char residues encapsulating GFs perfectly in the condensed phase, which effectively reduced the interface energy and increased the surface roughness of GFs to suppress the wetting and spreading of PLA melt toward the flame zone, and consequently weakened the candlewick effect of GFs and achieved better flame retardancy. This provides new ideas for preparing fiber reinforced polymer composites with encouraging mechanical properties and outstanding fire safety simultaneously.

The encapsulation and release of hydrophobic drugs from polymersomes are of great importance in drug delivery. A significant challenge is to enhance the encapsulation capacity of finding better drug-polymer compatibility. Herrin, poly(trimethylene carbonate)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PTMC-PEG) diblock copolymers were successfully synthesized by ring opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate using monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) as macro-initiator and stannous octoate as catalyst. The resulting diblock copolymer were characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, GPC, and DSC techniques. Blank and paclitaxel (PTX) loaded micelles was prepared by co-solvent evaporation method and characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The influence of hydrophilic/hydrophobic segment length to drug loading and release was explored. All micelles have the sustained hydrophobic drug release properties of the micelles. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of micelles was evaluated by MTT and live-dead cell staining assay using L929 cell lines, showing the good biocompatibility. Therefore, PTMC-PEG micelles could be a suitable material for the loading and releasing of hydrophobic drugs.

The g-titania functional additives were prepared via thiol-ene click chemical reaction, and then the polylactic acid/g-titania nanofiber membrane was prepared via electrospinning technology. Characterization via scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption showed that the average fiber diameter of the TP4 fiber membrane was 489 nm, the specific surface area was 34.69 m 2 ·g −1 , and the average pore size was 22.31 nm. The adsorption mechanism, photocatalytic degradation performance, and reusability of polylactic acid/g-titania nanofibrous membranes were characterized. The results showed that the adsorption of methylene blue by TP4 nanofiber membrane followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which could be represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 35.44 mg·g −1 . In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by TP4 nanofiber membrane followed a first-order kinetic model and exhibited high reusability. Therefore, polylactic acid/g-titania nanofiber membrane, as an efficient dye removal material, shows a good application prospect in wastewater treatment.

Rapid hemostasis, biosafety, and adaptability to different bleeding sites are the focus of research on hemostatic materials. In this work, an efficient and simple preparation of aldehyde starch hemostatic microspheres (ASHMs) crosslinked with L-cystine dimethyl ester was developed. Through a series of physicochemical parameters and in vitro and in vivo hemostatic properties measurements, the results showed that under the optimal crosslinking degree, ASHMs had a regular and uniform spherical shape, and it had a liquid suction capacity of up to 880%. At the same time, the aldehyde groups on its surface can increase the adhesion and aggregation of blood cells, thereby enhancing the hemostatic effect, which can be considered as a synergistic effect. More importantly, ASHMs have good biocompatibility and minimal intradermal irritation. Taken together,ASHMs could be used as potential novel hemostatic materials for surgical treatment.

Polylactic acid/starch (PLA/ST) composites are all sustainable origin, have huge cost advantages and degradation tendency to replace petroleum-based plastics. However, thermodynamic incompatibility between PLA and starch dragged the performance far below expectations. Considering that ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE), and pentaerythritol glycidyl ether (PGE) have branched multi-epoxy structure, high epoxy value, and excellent wettability, we firstly explored those materials as compatibilizers in PLA/ST composites. The reactive compatibilization between the epoxy groups on EGDE, GTE, and PGE with the hydroxyl groups on PLA and ST is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The mechanical properties show that the introduction of only 3 wt% GTE in PLA/ST composites can induce the tensile strength and elongation at break to be increased by 80% and 38%, respectively. The rheological tests indicate that the introduction of only 3 wt% GTE in PLA/ST composites increased the slopes of Han plots from 0.48 to 0.88. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses show that the crystallinity increases with the content of compatibilizer, up to 31%. The reduction of the gap between PLA and starch interfaces characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) demonstrated that the compatibility of PLA and ST was improved. Furthermore, the effects of EGDE, GTE, and PGE with the same epoxy value but different branch chains on the compatibilization of PLA/ST blends are further discussed. The results show that GTE and PGE with star-shaped branched structure has a better compatibilization effect on PLA/ST blends than EGDE with linear branched structure.

Poly( L -lactic acid) (PLLA) is a biocompatible material and has found its application in bioresorbable vascular stents (BVS). However, the crystallization of pure PLLA makes it brittle as a medical implant device. In this work, the biodegradable poly(1,3-trimethylene carbonate- b -( L -lactide- ran -glycolide acid)) (PTLG) terpolymers with improved mechanical performance were developed and processed into peripheral vascular stents by a novel 3D 4-axial printing technology. The PTLG terpolymers were successfully synthesized by ring-opening copolymerization of L -lactic acid (LLA), 1,3-trimethylene carbonate (PTMC) and glycolide acid (GA) units. The crystallinity and mechanical properties of the PTLG terpolymers with various degradation rate depends on the chain sequence structure and the component contents. Compared with the stent prepared by laser engraving, the peripheral vascular stent prepared by the 3D 4-axial printing technology exhibit a finer structure and smoother strut surface. It was found that both the strut diameters and the molecular weight of PTMC affect the radial force of the stents and that the apparent activation energy of thermal decomposition of the stents is mainly influenced by the molecular weight of PTMC and the component ratio. Therefore, the addition of the PTMC segment can effectively improve the flexibility of the PTLG terpolymer stent and the 3D printed PTLG terpolymer-based stent. Furthermore, CCK-8 and live/dead staining suggested that the stents have good biocompatibility.

Bio-based “thiol-epoxides” thermosets containing dynamic cross-linked network topologies, permanent cross-linking and recyclability have been successfully utilized in coatings, adhesives and composites. However, these materials typically have a low glass transition temperature and limited mechanical strength. Combining excellent mechanical properties with thermal properties remains a significant challenge. In this study, we developed a recyclable itaconic acid-based epoxy thermoset material with high glass transition temperature and tensile strength through thiol-olefin/thiol-epoxy click reaction and alkyl bond radical copolymerization to construct a hybrid cross-linked network. The tensile strength reached up to (105.9 MPa) while maintaining a high T g (93.3°C), which is the highest value reported in the literature so far. In addition, the itaconic acid-based epoxy has excellent recyclable processing, self-healing properties, high hardness, solvent resistance, and surface bond strength as an adhesive and coating. The results hold potential applications in achieving sustainable development in coatings and adhesives.

In recent years, conductive hydrogels have been designed as flexible sensors with broad application prospects in the field of smart wearable devices. However, the coordination of the mechanical properties, self-healing capability, and conductivity of hydrogels has always been a challenge. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel with self-adhesive, re-shapeable, and rapid self-healing abilities (PB-PACS-PM3 (self-healing efficiency) = 98.8% in 15 s) was prepared by incorporating protocatechualdehyde modified carboxymethyl chitosan (PA@o-CMCS) and PDA-modified MXene (PDA@MXene) into the interchain of polyvinyl alcohol through dynamic borate ester crosslinking. The dynamic Schiff base reaction not only effectively introduced o-CMCS as a mechanical enhancer but also improved the viscoelasticity and self-healing capability of the hydrogel through the dual dynamic bond crosslinking structure. The PDA@MXene nanosheets are uniformly distributed in the hydrogel, providing the composite system with excellent conductivity (the conductivity of PB-PACS-PM3 hydrogel is 1.5 S/m) and strain sensitivity (the response time and recovery time of the hydrogel sensor are 230 and 260 ms, respectively), while the tensile strength of the hydrogel is improved to 0.035 MPa. Due to all these advantages, this conductive hydrogel can be assembled into flexible wearable sensors for rapid and accurate monitoring of various physiological activities of the human body, such as finger, wrist, elbow, and knee bending vibrations, among others.

The chain extension of polyamide 6 (PA6) via a chemical reaction between a chain extender and the amino and carboxyl groups of the polymer increases the molecular weight and improves the mechanical properties, while typically deteriorates PA6 processability owing to cross-linking. To resolve this issue, a dynamic covalent chain extender containing two anhydride groups is synthesized, which reacts only with amino groups, and employed to connect the PA6 molecular chains via the reaction between anhydride groups and terminal amino groups of PA6. On adding 3 wt% of the chain extender, the content of amino end groups is decreased from 30.6 to 5.8 μmol g −1 and the yield strength and elastic modulus of chain-extended PA6 exceed those of original PA6 by 15.8% and 23.4%, respectively; meanwhile, the melt torque of chain-extended PA6 is lower by 35.0% approximately, and the complex viscosity is also decreased. As far as we know, the dynamic covalent chain extender is used for the first time in the chain extension of PA6. This study provides a prospective approach to recycle PA6 for simultaneously improving mechanical properties and processability.
