Using renewable substances as the raw materials, and through relatively greener synthetic processes to implement the preparation of novel functional polymers is an idea that accords with the concept of “sustainable development” and is highly desirable in nowadays polymer science. In this study, apigenin (as renewable phenol) and furfurylamine (as renewable amine) were selected to prepare bio-based benzoxazine derivative (AP-f) through Mannich reaction . Using AP-f and diphenylmethane-based diisocyanide (IC) as reactants, a type of cross-linked, semi-aromatic polyamide derivative (Bio-PA) was successfully prepared via benzoxazine-isocyanide mechanochemistry (BIC-MC) by ball milling manner. Chemical structure , elemental composition , micro morphology and stacking state properties of Bio-PA were systematically characterized here. Multiple Pb(II)-affinitive molecular fragments (phenolic hydroxyl , tertiary amine and amide) were integrated into the structure of Bio-PA. Based on this, the application of Bio-PA as “enrichment-type” Pb(II) electrochemical probe was explored subsequently. The results showed that the introduction of Bio-PA significantly improved the response of Pb(II), and the modified electrode (Bio-PA/Nafion/GCE) illustrated satisfactory detection sensitivity and selectivity.

In this work, a dual-functional electrochemical sensor has been proposed based on Sn-doped defective Bi 2 S 3 (TDDB) microspheres, which exhibited the excellent electrochemical performance on Pb(II) and H 2 O 2 detection. The TDDB offered a satisfied detection limit of 8.0 nM towards Pb(II) with a sensitivity of 96.7 μA ⋅ μM −1 . As a H 2 O 2 sensor, a high sensitivity of 3540 μA mM −1 cm −2 was obtained in a linear range from 0.45 mM to 10 mM with a detection limit of 10 nM. Moreover, the electrochemical detection of Pb(II) in Taihu Lake and H 2 O 2 in human serum was achieved with high reliability and good recovery.

This study examined the effects of two kinds of iron-trimesic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [MIL-100(Fe) and Fe-BTC] on adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II). For both materials, adsorption of Pb and Cd nearly approached equilibriums in the initial 2 min with high pseudo-second-order kinetics rate constants (0.895 g·mg −1 ·min −1 for Pb and 1.416 g·mg −1 ·min −1 for Cd). Both materials showed better adsorption performance with the increase of solution pH (from 2 to 7). Adsorption processes were endothermic, entropy-increased and spontaneous. The higher enthalpy change ( Δ H 0 ) and entropy change ( Δ S 0 ) values for Cd adsorption reflected the more difficult adsorption of Cd compared with Pb, which is related with more negative hydration enthalpy ( Δ H hyd Θ ) and larger ionic radius of Cd. Multilayer adsorption phenomena appeared with no maximum adsorptive capacity observed. Both Langmuir-Freundlich and Freundlich-BET models could well describe isotherms. Multilayer adsorption may be attributed to the formation of inner-sphere complexation and outer-sphere complexation. Bockris-Devanathan-Muller (BDM) electrical double layer theory was used for illustrating adsorption mechanism. The fixed-bed adsorption experiments with Fe-BTC showed outstanding elimination performance in initial operating period (>99.8% for Pb and >99.6% for Cd), with effective filtration volume of 980 mL for Pb and 300 mL for Cd. Recyclability test showed that Fe-BTC could be well regenerated by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na). This study showed that MIL-100(Fe) and Fe-BTC are potential for practical heavy metal removal applications.

Bromoactylated apple seeds (BAS) was used as new source for the synthesis of environmental adsorbent. Apple seeds were modified by bromoacetyl bromide to obtain a macroinitiator for single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) of acrylonitrile (AN). The amidoxime (AO) adsorbent was prepared by the reaction of the graft copolymer bromoactylated apple seeds (BAS)/polyacrylonitrile (BAS- g -PAN) with hydroxylamine. Amidoxime BAS- g -PAN (AO BAS- g -PAN) was used to remove Pb(II) and the maximum adsorption for Pb(II) was 1.58 mmol/g. AO BAS- g -PAN could also selectively adsorb Pb(II) from binary ion systems in the existence of Ag(I), Ni(II) and Zn(II). This efficient modifying approach provides a new powerful mean toward filling the gap on apple waste as a potential source for controlling heavy metal pollution.

In this work, Fe 3 O 4 @Zr(OH) x yolk–shell nanospheres (YSNs) were synthesized via a two-step process and further examined as adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II). To understand the hollow structure on the adsorption properties of Pb(II), another adsorbent without hollow cavities, i.e., Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Zr(OH) x core–shell nanospheres (CSNs), was also prepared for comparison. The adsorption results showed that Fe 3 O 4 @Zr(OH) x YSNs exhibited 41.6% higher Pb(II) adsorption capacity as compared to that of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Zr(OH) x CSNs. The isotherm was well fitted to Langmuir adsorption model with q max value of 310.8 mg/g after normalized by the weight of Zr in Fe 3 O 4 @Zr(OH) x YSNs. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mapping results revealed that the existence of cavities between Fe 3 O 4 cores and Zr(OH) x shells is responsible for the improved adsorption performance. XPS analysis indicated the surface hydroxyl groups played a key role in the Pb(II) adsorption. The removal efficiency of Pb(II) was maintained above 90% in five consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

Contamination of natural water with heavy metals (especially lead ions) is a problem of major concern and thus great demand of effective adsorbents for removal of toxic ions is increasing. Due to the task-specific properties of amino groups, core–shell nanostructures of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 have been extensively investigated as advanced adsorbents; however, most studies on surface modification of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 substances were of environmentally inefficient grafting methods. Herein, we demonstrated that mono-dispersed and spherical Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 nanomaterials can be facilely prepared by co-condensation of TEOS with APTMS employing a green sol–gel process. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) prepared under optimum conditions possessing uniform core–shell structure (∼200 nm in diameter), relatively high loading of amino-functionality (∼5.45 wt%), easy recovery by external magnet and effective removal of Pb(II) ( q m = 243.9 mg/g, 25 °C). The adsorption was shown to be effective and a higher temperature was more favorable for the adsorption. The adsorption equilibrium data obeyed the Langmuir model and the kinetic data were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic studies revealed the feasibility and endothermic nature of the system. These results demonstrated that the sol–gel produced Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –NH 2 , due to its easy synthesis and recovery and eco-friendliness, can be a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal.

Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) derived from a single small-molecule protic salt (p-phenylenediamine bisulfate) is used for sensing toxic heavy metal ions. Using Nafion, bismuth and NMC to anchor the glassy carbon electrode surface, the fabricate electrode shows high sensitivity for detecting Cd(II) and Pb(II). The limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 0.3 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 0.4 μg L−1 for Pb(II), respectively, which are 10 and 25 times lower than the maximum acceptable content for drinking water recommended by the WHO. Furthermore, the sensor is successfully used to analyze Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap-water with high anti-interference capability and good recovery.

In this study, SiO 2 -EDTA was prepared by silanization reaction between N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl) ethylenediamine triacetic acid, trisodium salt (EDTA-silane) and hydroxyl groups for enhanced removal of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit (the clathrate generated by Pb(II) and trisodium citrate dehydrate(Cit)) and Pb(II)-EDTA(20%) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 -EDTA composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDX-mapping, FTIR, XPS and TGA analyses. The influence of solution pH, initial concentration, contact time and co-existing interferents were also studied. Results demonstrated that the composite successfully adsorbed 147.52, 107.65 and 124.18 mg g −1 of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit, and Pb(II)-EDTA (20%), respectively with the initial Pb(II) concentration of 100 mg L −1 . Kinetics study revealed that the adsorption rate was significantly high at the beginning and then reached to equilibrium within 1.0 h. Moreover, Pb(II) adsorption capacities were found to considerably affected by co-existing cations and not inhibited by natural organic matter (NOM). Characterization analyses confirmed that EDTA was successfully assembled on SiO 2 which had been used as a supporting matrix due to its huge specific surface area. Findings from this study suggested that the present composite could be considered as a promising adsorbent for large scale treatment of wastewater containing elevated Pb(II) concentration.

In this paper, a sensor using carbon nanospheres modified boron-doped diamond (CNs/BDD) electrode for detecting heavy metal ions rapidly in aqueous solution is studied. The CNs/BDD electrode is characterized systematically by techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical properties of the CNs/BDD electrode, BDD electrode and Au electrode are compared by cyclic voltammetry. It is found that the CNs/BDD electrode has more negative hydrogen evolution potential, a wider potential window and a larger effective electrode area, which is conducive to the accurate detection of heavy metal ions. The square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is applied to assess and quantify the sensing capability of the CNs/BDD electrode. The effects of deposition potential, deposition time and other experimental parameters on the detection performance are studied. Under the optimal experimental conditions, CNs/BDD electrodes exhibit remarkable detection capabilities for lead (Pb(II) ions, in which a linear relationship within the concentration range from 1 to 140 µg/L with a 0.9994 correlation coefficient is obtained. Meanwhile, it has excellent repeatability with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.57%, and the achieved actual limit of detection (LOD) reaches 0.01 µg/L. In addition, the interference experiment results show that except for Cd(II) ions and Cu(II) ions, other common ions in water have little interference to Pb(II) ion detection. The Pb(II) ions recovery rates are 89.1–115.7% in the real water samples. Experimental analysis indicates that the CNs/BDD electrode possesses the advantages of low detection limit, short detection time, and simple experimental equipment, which meets the requirements of Pb(II) ions field detection.

Polymer-based adsorbents have emerged as promising candidates for heavy-metal remediation due to their tailorable porosity and multifunctional surfaces, yet challenges persist in achieving both structural precision and adsorption efficiency. Here, we report a concave hollow double-layer nanosphere (CHDN) synthesized through a facile self-assembly strategy engineered for selective capture of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. Comprehensive characterization via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the hierarchical architecture with abundant amino/hydroxyl moieties. The CHDN demonstrated exceptional adsorption capacities of 198.40 mg/g for Cd(II) and 60.34 mg/g for Pb(II), outperforming conventional adsorbents. Isotherm analysis revealed Cd(II) adsorption followed the Sips model (R2 > 0.99), while Pb(II) adhered to the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer and heterogeneous binding mechanisms, respectively. Kinetic studies further corroborated chemisorption dominance through pseudo-second-order fitting for Cd(II) and Elovich compatibility for Pb(II). We propose a synergistic mechanism involving ligand complexation and ion exchange, facilitated by the dual functionality of surface groups and structural advantages of the concave architecture. This work provides a blueprint for designing spatially engineered polymers for environmental remediation.

In this study, magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres (MDCM) were prepared by reverse emulsion-double crosslinking method (carbodiimide followed by glutaraldehyde) for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The obtained magnetic adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, BET, and 13 C NMR. The effects of the pH, contact time, initial concentration, and competitive metal cations (Na(I), Ca(II), or Mg(II)) on Pb(II) adsorption were investigated. The results revealed that MDCM exhibited high removal performance over a wide pH range and in the presence of competitive metal cations. The maximum adsorption capacity of MDCM for Pb(II) is 214.63 mg g −1 at pH 3, which is higher than most recently reported magnetic adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms can be described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. In addition, MDCM is easy to regenerate and can be reused five cycles with high adsorption capacity. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed by FTIR and XPS analysis. Overall, MDCM has practical application potential in removing Pb(II) from contaminated wastewater due to its high adsorption efficiency, good reusability, and convenient magnetic separation.

Conventional heavy metal adsorbents are limited by passive mass transfer mechanisms that constrain separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, we report a novel approach integrating autonomous nanomotor propulsion with selective molecular recognition for enhanced Pb(II) removal. Bullet-shaped Janus nanomotor adsorbents (JSNMs@IIPs) were synthesized through asymmetric emulsion templating, featuring silver nanoparticle-catalyzed propulsion chambers and ion-imprinted polymer recognition shells. Under H 2 O 2 fuel (10.0 wt%), JSNMs@IIPs exhibited controlled autonomous motion (23.1μm s −1 ) that delivered significant kinetic enhancement with 265 % faster adsorption rates compared to static systems. The JSNMs@IIPs achieved maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity (158.5 mg g −1 at 318 K) while maintaining high selectivity (k = 16.8–61.3) against competing metal ions and excellent regenerability (93 % capacity retention over seven cycles). XPS analysis revealed coordination-based adsorption through Pb-N interaction formation within pre-organized imprinted cavities, while autonomous motion enhanced mass transfer through active convection. This work establishes motion-enhanced molecular recognition for advanced separation technologies, demonstrating that nanomotor propulsion can simultaneously improve kinetics and maintain selectivity in complex separation challenges.
