Metal ions are widely present in biological systems and participate in many critical biochemical processes. Resisting interfering ions and achieving specific detection at the biosensor present a significant challenge. Herein, we designed a highly sensitive and anti-interference Bio-QDs biosensor through the biosynthesis CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and the use of sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) as a stabilizer (CdSe QD@HMP) for detecting the calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) in plant tissue culture medium, which is known for its complexity. Because of the spatial hexahedron molecular structure and six interconnected tetrahedral P-O units of HMP increased the electronegativity and stability of CdSe, the CdSe QD@HMP easily captured Ca 2+ in solution, resulting in a minimum detection limit of 0.377 µM for Ca 2+ in the range of 1–300 μM. And HMP can also ensure that the detection process is not affected by negative ion interference. Additionally, the recovery rate of environmental samples was 96.40 % and 101.13 %, confirming the reliability and practicality of the prepared biosensors. Therefore, this strategy not only provides a green and safe pathway for synthesizing QDs, but also lays the foundation for the sensitive determination of metal cations in complex environment.

Simple and sensitive detection of cardiac biomarkers is of great significance for early diagnosis and prevention of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Here, a ratiometric fluorescent nanohybrids probe (AuNCs-QDs) was synthesized through the coupling of bovine serum albumin-functionalized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to realize simple and sensitive detection of cardiac biomarker myoglobin (Mb). The AuNCs-QDs probe shows pink fluorescence under UV light, with two emission peaks at 468 nm and 630 nm belonging to QDs and AuNCs, respectively. Importantly, the presence of Mb caused fluorescence quenching of the blue-emitting QDs, thereby inhibiting the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process between QDs and AuNCs, and reducing the fluorescence intensity ratio (F 468 /F 630 ) of AuNCs-QDs probe effectively. As the concentration of Mb increases, the ratiometric fluorescent probe also exhibits a visible fluorescence color change. The detection limit was as low as 4.99 μg/mL, and the response of the probe to Mb showed a good linear relationship up to 0.52 mg/mL. Moreover, the probe has excellent specificity for Mb. Besides, the AuNCs-QDs has been applied to detect Mb of urine samples. More importantly, we also developed an AuNCs-QDs probe modified smartphone-aided paper-based strip for on-site monitoring of Mb. As far as we know, this is the first report of a smartphone-aided paper-based strip for on-site quick monitoring of Mb, which provides a useful approach for AMI biomarker monitoring and may can be extended to other medical diagnostics.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally polysaccharide that has been used for drug delivery, but is limited by low drug loading capacity and drug leakage in circulation. To improve drug delivery efficient, HA modified porous silica (pSiO 2 ) nanocarriers were successfully prepared for drug delivery and combining therapy. pSiO 2 nanocarriers have stable porous structure and high loading capacity, and pSiO 2 /HA nanocarriers would possess advantages of HA-based carriers and pSiO 2 nanoparticles . Herein, pSiO 2 nanocarriers were prepared by two-phase process, followed by embedding Ag 2 S QDs in the pore walls of pSiO 2 carriers, which render the carriers photothermal effect. pSiO 2 nanocarriers have size of 30 nm, large channels, and high loading capacity (29.3 %). To graft HA, a sensitive linker with alkyl amine and disulfide bond was conjugated on the surface of Ag 2 S/pSiO 2 nanocarriers by three-step reaction. After loading doxorubicin (DOX), HA was grafted via sensitive linker onto the surface of Ag 2 S/pSiO 2 carriers via the formation of amide bonds to seal the loaded drugs. The interaction between HA and CD44 confers the carrier targeting ability to cancer cells. HA coating can be degraded by hyaluronidase resulting in the release of internal cargo. The Ag 2 S/pSiO 2 /HA nanocarriers performs responsive drug release and combining photothermal chemotherapy.

Background Early diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma is extremely significant for the effective treatment of kidney cancer. The development of AS1411 aptamer modified Mn-MoS2 QDs provides a promising fluorescence/magnetic resonance (MR) dual-modal imaging probe for the precise diagnosis of renal clear cell carcinoma. Methods In this work, Mn-MoS2 QDs were synthesized through a simple “bottom-up” one-step hydrothermal method. AS1411 aptamer was modified on the Mn-MoS2 QDs to improve the specificity to renal cell carcinoma. The characteristics of Mn-MoS2 QDs were confirmed by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra, etc. Cellular fluorescence labelling was investigated using the Mn-MoS2 QDs and AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QDs. The T1-weighted MR imaging was assessed by the in vitro MR cell imaging and in vivo MR imaging. Finally, the long-term toxicity of Mn-MoS2 QDs was investigated by the hematology and histological analysis. Results The prepared Mn-MoS2 QDs exhibited excellent aqueous property, intense fluorescence, low toxicity, high quantum yield of 41.45% and high T1 relaxivity of 16.95 mM−1s−1. After conjugated with AS1411 aptamer, the AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QDs could specifically fluorescently label the renal carcinoma cells and present a specific MRI signal enhancement in the tumor region of mice bearing renal carcinoma tumors. Furthermore, Mn-MoS2 QDs revealed low toxicity to the mice via hematology and histological analysis. Conclusion These results demonstrated the potential of AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QD as a novel nanoprobe for targeted MR imaging and fluorescence labelling of renal cell carcinoma.

Ag + as one of the most commonly seen toxic heavy metal ions is involved in numerous vital biological processes, which would cause fatal damages and environmental contamination when Ag + is excessive. In the present work, CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with green, orange, and red emission capped by mercaptoacetic acid (TGA) were synthesized at one time by controlling the synthesis time and utilized for Ag + detection. Both fluorescence spectral red-shift and intensity decrease could be used for Ag + discrimination. Fluorescence lifetime , Zeta potential , and XRD, etc. were carried out to analyze the detection mechanism. Results displayed that surface passivation and electron transfer due to binding effects of Ag + to Te atom on traps of QDs could be relied on to explain the sensing mechanism. Additionally, in accordance with PCA analysis, Ag + could be also be successfully differentiated from Hg 2+ and the other metal ions. Importantly, a home-made portable device based on a 32 bit embed Micro Control Unit (MCU) system was first proposed for Ag + detection. The power supply system adopt the mini-sized lithium cell instead of the power supply system, which ensure its practical applicability. The relative position of light source and detector is set at 90° to minimize the interference. According to the detection results, the linear detection range using the device was from 5 nM to 200 nM (with a larger coefficient of determination, R 2 ), and the detection limit was calculated to be about 5 nM, which indicated that this proposed method and device could fulfil the practical application requirements.

The detection of heavy metals in aqueous solutions has always attracted much attention from all over the world. A fluorescent probe of CdSe/CdS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) was designed to detect trace Cd2+in aqueous solutions using the OFF–ON mode rapidly and efficiently, likely based on adsorption and desorption reactions between ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) and CdSe/CdS QDs. In the OFF mode, the optical shielding function of EDTA results in fluorescence quenching owing to the strong adsorption ability of EDTA with Cd2+on the sites of CdSe/CdS QDs surface. In the ON mode, the introduction of Cd2+promotes the desorption of EDTA from the EDTA-CdSe/CdS QDs and restores the fluorescence intensity. There were two linear response ranges which were 0.1–20 µmol/L and 20–90 µmol/L for the EDTA-CdSe/CdS system to detect Cd2+. The detection limit was 6 nmol/L, and the standard deviation was below 4% for the detection of Cd2+concentration in tap water. Keywords:QDs;fluorescence quenching;fluorescence restore;Cd2+detection;adsorption;desorption

A novel dual-channel sensor array based on the “off” and “off–on” phenomenon of ZnCdSe quantum dots (QDs) - KMnO 4 system was established for the effective distinguish of 30 green teas with various species, grades and origins. Starting from optimization of QDs for the construction of the sensing system, their sensitivity and selectivity performances towards 10 representative green teas were tested first and the sensor systems based on ZnCdSe QDs were finally established. An obvious “off” response brought by the interactions between amino acids , quercetin, et al. and ZnCdSe QDs was obtained while an “off–on” phenomenon brought by the interactions between catechins and the ZnCdSe-KMnO 4 system had also been verified. Furthermore, based on the differential fluorescence “off–on” response of seven catechins, the qualitative and quantitative analyses of these catechins were successfully carried out with the linear range from 0.5 to 10 µg/mL. Most importantly, through adopting the dual-channel sensor, 30 green teas with different species, origins and grades can be accurately identified with the LDA model according to the spectral signals and the recognition accuracy could achieve 100 %.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection inflicts significant economic and social burdens on many countries worldwide. Given the substantial morbidity and mortality from HIV infection, there is an urgent need for accurate and early detection of the virus. In this study, immunofluorescence and visual techniques are described that detect the HIV-1 p24 antigen, which relied on selective recognition of Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + using cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). After the sandwich immunoreactions were accomplished, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) hydrolyzed L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) to form ascorbic acid (AA) that further reduces Ag + and Cu 2+ to Ag NPs and Cu + , respectively. This method was highly sensitive and selective and could detect as low as 1 pg/mL of p24 antigen by naked eyes and had a good linearity in the concentration range 1–100 pg/mL. When using Ag + and Cu 2+ as media, the limit of detection (LOD) of the new method was 0.3 pg/mL and 0.2 pg/mL, respectively. Compared with clinical electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) results and clinical data, this method demonstrated good consistency for the quantification of HIV-1 p24 antigen in 34 clinical serum samples. In addition, this method could accurately distinguish HIV from other viruses and infections such as hepatitis B virus , systemic lupus erythematosus , hepatitis C virus , Epstein-Barr virus , cytomegalovirus , lipemia , and hemolysis . Therefore, our dual-mode analysis method may provide additional solutions to identify clinical HIV infection. Graphical abstract An immunofluorescence and visualization dual-mode strategy for the detection of p24 antigen was constructed based on immune recognition reaction and a phenomenon that cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) can selectively recognize Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + .

Nano-light materials have attracted great interest in materials research due to their excellent fluorescent properties. The hybrid assembly of various nano-optical materials combines their advantages, extending the scope of potential applications. Herein, we report a fluorescence organic–inorganic hybrid nanostructure (T-PNI@QDs) based on binding red-emitting CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to blue-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymeric micelles in aqueous media with dual-channel emission. The AIE-active polymeric micelles were obtained by the self-assembly of thiol-terminated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized poly(N-isopropylmethacylamide) (T-PNI-SH) in water. An interesting assembly behaviour of transformation from a worm-like to a core–shell structure was observed by controlling the ratio of QDs/polymers due to the coordinated interaction between the QDs and the thiol groups. The dual-emission of T-PNI@QDs has obvious temperature-sensitive behaviour on account of PNIPAM. The novel fluorescent hybrid nanostructure was used as a probe to selectively detect picric acid (PA) in pure water. We expect this work will open up a new perspective for the construction of organic–inorganic hybrids based on different nano-light materials.

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction using BiFeO 3 as catalyst was considered as an efficient environmental remediation technique. However, its low catalytic performance limited its application. In this work, CdSe QDs with high electron mobility, small size effect and rich surface properties were loaded on BFO surface by stirring impregnation method. The photo-Fenton catalytic performance of catalysts under visible light irradiation was evaluated by the degradation of phenol. The results showed that the BFO with CdSe QDs uniformly distributed on the surface shows much better photo-Fenton degradation of phenol performance than that of pure BFO. Moreover, when the load content of CdSe QDs comes to 0.5 wt%, the degradation efficiency of phenol increased from 41.5% to 98.5% within 60 min. The results of photochemical experiments confirmed that composite catalyst had a good ability to separate photo-induced carriers and the experiments of free radicals trapping showed that the holes and OH radicals were important active substances. Based on the above research, the possible mechanism of photo-Fenton reaction of catalyst was expounded. Excellent photo-Fenton catalytic performance and superior stability make this material showing a good application prospect for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater.

A novel, simple, and versatile electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform for Pb(II) ions was developed based on DNAzyme with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) with positive charge was adsorbed onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and then CdS quantum dots (QDs) with negative charge were enriched to the surface of GO by electrostatic interaction between CdS QDs and PDDA to prepare a composite (denoted as [email protected] ) which was immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). When hydrogen peroxide was used as coreactant CdS QDs can produce ECL signal. G-rich DNA strand, i . e . T30695, can combine with Pb (II) ions to form a stable parallel G-quadruplex. The G-quadruplex can further combine with hemin to form DNAzyme which have catalysis towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide causing the decrease of ECL signal. Amino-modified T30695 was attached to [email protected] composite by the reaction between the amino group of T30695 and carboxyl group of CdS QDs. The ECL signal of the biosensor was linearly dependent on the logarithm of Pb(II) concentration from 1.0 × 10 − 14 to 1.0 × 10 − 11 M with a detection limit of 9 fM. An excellent performance of ECL biosensor indicated that it is promising for Pb(II) detection in real samples.
