The development of advanced and robust photocatalysts is vital for efficient photocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline . Herein, a hierarchical heterojunction (Bi)BiOBr/rGO was facilely synthesized by employing an in-situ reduction strategy. An obvious synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalysis was observed. A >98% tetracycline degradation efficiency was obtained within 20 min, and high performance could be maintained for over 50 h in a continuous operation without any post-treatment. The experimental and DFT calculation results suggested that there existed a built-in electric field between the interfaces, leading to the fast electron migration. Furthermore, rGO could significantly enhance the tetracycline adsorption, and Bi largely suppressed the charge carrier recombination owing to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. A possible tetracycline degradation pathway was proposed based on the HPLC-MS analysis. This study provides pathways for the rational design of advanced and robust photocatalysts to effectively degrade emerging contaminants in practical continuous-flow configurations.

This work presents an on-off ratiometric electrochemical quantitation study of methyl parathion (MP), one of the most popularly used organophosphorus pesticides, based on electrode modification with a newly developed nanocomposite, i.e., reduced graphene oxide (rGO) functionalized with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF). It was shown that MP strongly adsorbs on the modified electrodes and produces a distinct reduction signal (-NO 2 ), which increases proportionally with its concentration; meanwhile, the intrinsic reduction signal (Fe(III)/(II)) from the nanocomposite (NiHCF/PDDA@rGO) decreases due to the inhibited electron-transfer process upon MP binding. Indeed, plotting the ratiometric signal (the ratio of decreased Fe(III)/(II) current and the increased MP current) as a function of the analyte (MP) concentration produces a linear calibration curve in the range of 0.05 μM to 10 μM (R 2 = 0.9987), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 16 nM. The method was further validated in real water samples, showing recoveries of 96.2–102% with relative standard deviations below 3.3%, which are comparable with standard HPLC results.

Significant volume change and poor conductivity hinder the commercial applications of silicon in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), although it provides high theoretical capacity. Herein, a cost-effective and scalable technique was applied to synthesize silicon/reduced graphene oxide (Si/rGO) from low-cost clay induced by the reduction of GO, in which Si particles are encapsulated by rGO. The appealing structural features make mesoporous Si/rGO highly suitable anode material for LIBs. Furthermore, it shows an enhanced capacity of 1548 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. The composite also displays superior rate capability at various current densities. The enhanced electrochemical performances can be attributed to the mesoporous structure, encapsulation of Si by rGO along with the synergistic effect between rGO and Si, which overcome the disadvantages of Si i.e. large volume variation and low electrical conductivity . In addition to the excellent electrochemical performance, low-cost materials and high-volume processing technology make mesoporous Si/rGO as an attractive candidate for high-performance anodes in LIBs.

The shuttling and sluggish conversion kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) lead to poor cycling performance and low energy efficiency in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this work, a hierarchically structured nanocomposite, synthesized through a surfactant-directed hydrothermal growth following dopamine-protected pyrolysis, serves as a bidirectional catalyst for LSBs. This nanocomposite comprises N -doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets anchored with uniformly distributed TiO 2- x nanoparticles via interfacial N -Ti and C-Ti bonding, resulting in the formation of abundant 2D/0D Schottky heterojunctions (rGO/TiO 2- x ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ Raman characterizations demonstrate that rGO/TiO 2- x effectively inhibits the shuttling of LiPSs with enhanced redox kinetics, achieving high utilization of the sulfur cathode and improving the overall reversibility. A high areal capacity is attained at a high sulfur loading and a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio. The initial specific capacity reaches 1010 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.2C (1C = 1675 mA g −1 ), and a retention of 86.4 % is attained over 100 cycles. A light-emitting diode (LED) screen using two LSBs with rGO/TiO 2- x demonstrates their high potential for practical applications.

The combination of transition metal compounds and carbon materials is considered effective in optimizing electrode material performance. In this work, some simple methods are used to embed bimetallic phosphides into carbon material frameworks to form heterostructures. The process includes the in situ growth of cobalt-based zeolitic imidazole frameworks on rGO, the formation of bimetallic hydroxides by Ni 2+ etching, and further high-temperature phosphating to form a NiCoP/rGO hollow nanocomposite. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between NiCoP and rGO, NiCoP/rGO-20 exhibits the best electrochemical properties, has a high specific capacity of 250.9 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g –1 , and has good rate performance (62.7% retention at 10 A g –1 ). Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor was assembled with NiCoP/rGO-20 as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode. The NiCoP/rGO-20//AC HSC device has a high energy density of 60.6 Wh kg –1 at a power density of 749 W kg –1 as well as excellent cycling stability with 83.7% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g –1 . This work provides a new strategy for the development of high-performance energy storage composites.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) heterostructure nanosheets (rGO-MoS 2 -1) were synthesized via vertically growing of MoS 2 on rGO skeleton using a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Toward high-performance lubrication additive, the rGO-MoS 2 -1 in industrial gear oil shows extraordinary dispersity and stability because its steric hindrance effect restrains the aggregation and settling tendency. More importantly, its introduction can significantly reduce the friction (∼16.7%) and wear (up to 80%) under the sliding contact. The characterization and analysis on the worn surfaces reveal that good dispersion stability, the formation of rGO-MoS 2 -based lubrication protective film, and the lower shear strength induced by the inherent lattice mismatch between rGO and MoS 2 are the key factors in the friction reduction and protection the tribo-interfaces against wear.

The Functionality of wood has evolved with time to adapt to the emerging needs in society. In this work, endowing electrical conductivity to the insulating wood by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into the wood matrix to form a conductive wood/rGO composite (conductive wood) via a facile and environmentally benign fabrication technique . The rationale of fabricating conductive wood is of two folds: (1) The high suitability of wood as a renewable matrix due to its porous network and mechanically robust monolithic structure. (2) The need to explore a reasonable strategy to adequately translate the properties of rGO from microscopic level to macroscopic level. The conductive wood is able to preserve both the natural features of wood (to function as mechanical scaffold) and the conductivity of rGO. An outstanding electrical conductivity (volume resistivity of 36.7 Ω cm) is achieved for the conductive wood, while it can maintain a low bulk density of 0.44 g /cm. More significantly, the conductive wood demonstrates a highly three-dimensional anisotropic conductivity that makes it a highly versatile conductor in various applications ( e.g., electromagnetic shielding and wave absorbing materials). Hence, this lightweight conductive wood may contribute toward a great electronic revolution and as an encouraging strategy to repurpose the function of wood in this new era.

The flexible smart wearable device with low cost and high performance is highly desired but rather challenging. In this work, a wearable temperature sensor was developed by integrating the polybutylene terephthalate melt-blown nonwoven fabric (PBT NW) with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via a simple mechanical ultrasonication method. The microstructures of the rGO/CNTs@PBT NW sensor were investigated by FT-IR, XRD , and SEM techniques, and the thermal and mechanical properties of this sensor were systematically analyzed. The conductive rGO and CNTs could be tightly fixed to the surface of PBT NW. Compared with original PBT NW, the tensile properties of rGO/CNTs@PBT NW sensor were improved. The results of sensing performance tests showed that the prepared temperature sensor had high sensitivity (−0.737% °C −1 ) and linearity (R 2 =0.98) with a resolution of 0.1 °C between 25 °C and 45 °C, a long-term stability and good circularity indicating that our sensor can meet the monitoring requirement of real-time human body temperature. In addition, this sensor could also be used to monitor human respiratory rate. Our study may provide a new idea for the fabrication of the flexible temperature sensor with nonwoven substratefor monitoring the human body and environment temperature.

RGO/Fe 3 O 4 /FeCO 3 -based composite was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The microscopic morphology and structure were studied using analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electromagnetic parameters and the wave absorption properties of the composite/paraffin mixture were analyzed by the vector network analyzer. It is divulged that the FeCO 3 spheres, Fe 3 O 4 spheres, and the RGO sheets form a fluffy structure rich in microscopic cavities, as well as a good conductive network through the sphere–sheet and sphere–sphere interlap mechanisms, which significantly improves the absorbing performance of the composite. The composite can achieve a maximum reflection loss of − 37.9 dB at a frequency value of 13.9 GHz with a matching thickness of only 6.8 mm. The matching thickness can be adjusted in the range of 5.2–10.0 mm in order to attain a flexible adjustment of the effective microwave absorption band of 9.9–18.0 GHz. Combined with the first-principles calculations, compositing reduces the electron migration energy barrier and thus improves the charge transferring capability. Meanwhile, the interaction of the different components leads to the formation of a special charge transferring channel and the increase of carrier concentration, which enhances the charge transport, as well as the absorbing capacity of the absorbing material.

We developed a layered composite with directional distributed reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in a copper matrix through a double-slot multi-step electrodeposition method, playing to the advantage of in-plane thermal conductivity of RGO. The resulting RGO/Cu composite has superior thermal conductivity up to 545 W m −1 K −1 (150% of copper), which was determined by the growth behavior of the RGO flake on the copper substrate through adjusting electrodeposition time. By analyzing the structure, distribution status and its relationship with thermal conductivity, three factors including of structural integrity of RGO, thermal conduction network and interfacial effect between RGO layers were proposed. With the increase of deposition time, the restoration of RGO lattice structure and the formation of a complete thermal conduction network both promoted the phonon transmission, which was beneficial to the improvement of thermal conductivity. The multi-layer stacking of RGO, however, could generate the interlayer interfacial effects, resulting in the phonon scattering and unfavorable to the thermal conductivity. Therefore, proper adjustment of RGO deposition time resulted in excellent thermal conductivity of RGO/Cu composite, meeting the demands for the heat dissipation performance of the instrument.

Improving the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent and realizing rapid separation are quite important for water treatment. Herein, one kind of novel Ni/Co-contained reduced graphene oxide aerogel microspheres (rGOAMs-M) with high surface area and magnetic response are synthesized by a novel process comprised of electrospraying, droplets spherification, crosslinking immobilizing of metal, lyophilization and thermal reduction. The aqueous dispersion mixture of graphene oxide and sodium alginate is electrosprayed under high electric voltages to produce droplets, which are collected in a nickel/cobalt acetate tetrahydrate solution and then crosslinked between alginate and metal ions. The obtained rGOAMs-M have the cabbage-like inner structures, and possess the organic solvent/oil adsorption capacities of 107–270 g.g −1 and also extraordinary oil/water emulsion separation ability. The rGOAMs-M also can be rapidly assembled and separated from the medium under a magnetic field.

Fast, reliable, and low-cost glucose detection methods are of great importance for the control of diabetes. In this study, Cu2O combined with Cu nanoparticles anchored on reduced graphene oxide (RGO), was synthesized to function as the electrode in a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. The synergistic effect between Cu nanoparticles and Cu2O, together with the high conductivity of RGO enabled considerably lower resistivity with greater glucose oxidation activity than pure Cu2O. The RGO@Cu2O@Cu electrode exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.112 mA mM−1 cm−2 with a detection limit of 0.019 μM, and the linear range is up to 4 mM. Additionally, the RGO@Cu2O@Cu electrode displayed good anti-interference performance within human blood and high stability while operating for a long duration. Significantly, the glucose detection capability of the as-designed electrode was comparable to commercial sensors, representing a valuable design for future non-enzymatic glucose sensing.
