A highly efficient Co-based catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation for rapid degradation of RhB over a wide pH range

Tong Yan,Yuqi Liu,Han Chen,Qi Wang,Xinying Wang,Yusi He,Baizhuang Li,Biao Li,Yuebin Feng,Huilong Luo,Wei Li

Cobalt-based materials have been demonstrated to be effective heterogeneous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate activation in degrading many refractory organic pollutants. In this study, a new cobalt-based catalyst was prepared using cobalt chloride hexahydrate (CoCl 2 ·6H 2 O) as the Co 2+ source, 2,3-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid and 3,6-DI-4-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (4-PYTZ) as ligands. This catalyst was employed as a peroxymonosulfate activator for the degradation of Rhodamine B(RhB). The results indicated that the prepared Co-based catalyst can effectively degrade RhB dye in aqueous solution by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Specifically, when the initial concentration of RhB was 20 mg/L, its degradation rate exceeded 98 % within merely 9 min. The factors influencing the activation of PMS by the Co-based catalyst were examined, including PMS concentration, reaction temperature, solution pH, and the concentration of organic pollutants. Stability and reusability tests demonstrated that the prepared catalyst exhibited good stability, with the degradation rate of RhB remaining above 97 % after four repetitive experiments. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses revealed that sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) are the primary reactive radicals accountable for the degradation process. Additionally, it displayed excellent adaptability over a wide pH range, particularly within the pH levels ranging from 5 to 9. This study demonstrates that the prepared Co-based catalyst can serve as a stable and effective option for degrading organic dyes in wastewater treatment applications.

Hydroxylamine-facilitated degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) as catalyzed by Fe@Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires

Hongwei Luo,Yaoyao Zhao,Dongqin He,Qing Ji,Ying Cheng,Daoyong Zhang,Xiangliang Pan

Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core-shell nanowire is a promising heterogeneous Fenton iron catalyst to degrade organic pollutants. So far, the roles of hydroxylamine (HA) in Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /HA system for pollutant degradation still remain unknown. In this study, the HA-facilitated degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) by Fe@Fe 2 O 3 was reported and the underlying mechanisms were explored. Results show that addition of HA significantly enhanced degradation of organic pollutants and a higher HA dosage caused a faster degradation rate . The degradation process was completely inhibited by scavengers, indicating the hydroxyl radical (HO ) from bulk solution dominated the reactions. HA in the Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /H 2 O 2 /HA system was highly efficient to promote the generation of HO by accelerating both the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle and the H 2 O 2 decomposition. Meanwhile, HA itself was rapidly decomposed along with the pollutants degradation. About 50.5% of RhB and 46.4% of PNP were mineralized in the presence of HA. The effective pH value for degradation was expanded from 4.0 to 5.0. The EE/O calculations demonstrate that a higher energy input for PNP was required than that for RhB. This study will shed lights on the reactivity of the Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /HA system and provide an alternative pathway for removal of organic contaminants.

Co/N co-doped porous carbon as a catalyst for the degradation of RhB by efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate

Yu Hongxia,Ding Dan,Zhao Shuailing,Faheem Muhammad,Mao Weijie,Yang Li,Chen Liwei,Cai Tianming

We report on the preparation of Co/N-NPC x/y with porous structure and excellent activation properties. The synthesis involves the preparation of Zn/Co-ZIF x and the carbonization of Zn/Co-ZIF x at a high temperature in an inert atmosphere. The volatilization of zinc during carbonization results in a porous structure, which is beneficial to the migration of pollutants. The sizes, specific surface areas, and pore size distribution of Co/N-NPC x/y can be achieved by tuning Zn/Co ratio. The calcination temperatures mainly affect the crystalline phase, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of the as-prepared materials. The effects of the as-prepared materials properties and activation conditions on the Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation by PMS activation were investigated. Overall, it exhibited superior catalytic activity in PMS activation, as evidenced by almost complete removal of RhB (0.020 mM, 100 mL) by using 5 mg/L Co/N-NPC 0.5/900 and 1.250 mM PMS within 30 min. Furthermore, it confirmed the participation of SO 4 •− , •OH, and 1 O 2 in the catalytic reaction, and both SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 were the main reactive oxygen species that play a major role.

Visible-light photocatalytic performance, recovery and degradation mechanism of ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI composite

Jianhui Li,Fan Yang,Quan Zhou,Lijie Wu,Wenying Li,Ruipeng Ren,Yongkang Lv

The ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, ICP-AES, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL and VSM. Nitrogen-containing dye RhB was used as a degradation substrate to evaluate the photocatalytic degradation activities of the samples. The photocatalytic performance of Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) is superior to other Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1). Compared with binary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr (0.5 : 1) prepared in our previous work, the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) has obvious advantages in photocatalytic activity and adsorption capacity. And the specific surface area (48.30 m2 g−1) is much larger than that of the previous report (Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.5 : 2 : 2)) synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Besides, after 25 s of magnetic field, Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) can be rapidly separated from water. After eight recycling cycles, the magnetic properties, photocatalytic activity, crystallization and morphology of the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) catalyst remain good. The possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB under Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) photocatalyst was also proposed. The results indicate that the ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) composite with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, good magnetic separation performance and excellent recyclability and stability has potential application prospect in wastewater.

Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate by Cu+-decorated g-C3N4 under sunlight for degradation of organic pollutants

Linhai Yang,Xuechang Ren,Yujie Zhang,Zuoyan Chen

This article is an in-depth study of the basis of Cu + -decorated triazine-based g-C 3 N 4 (Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheet-activated H 2 O 2 . In this study, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was activated by Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 under sunlight and used to treat simulated wastewater RhB. The properties of g-C 3 N 4 and Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 were characterized by UV–Vis DRS and PL . The results indicated that the introduction of Cu + in g-C 3 N 4 can enhance the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 (1:4) samples exhibited the best PMS activation performance under sunlight when 0.5 g/L catalyst dose and 0.5 mmol/L PMS concentration were used, and the removal rate of RhB reached 95.7% in 30 min. Moreover, better catalytic activity of the system can be achieved in the initial pH range of 2.0–10.0. The investigation results of the catalytic mechanisms showed that the prepared Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst constructs a dual reaction center of Cu + /Cu 2+ cycling and e CB − / h VB + transfer for efficient PMS activation. The degradation of pollutants benefits from the participation of a variety of free radicals, which are generated by sunlight-assisted heterogeneous activation of PMS. This study has resulted in substantial progress in activating multiple oxidants with a single heterogeneous catalyst and provides a feasible way to treat refractory wastewater using Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 with PMS under sunlight.

Construction of RhB derived multicolor carbon quantum dots @ up-conversion nanoparticle NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ for dual-model anti-counterfeit applications

Xiyao Tian,Yuning Ma,Junchao Zhang,Hongxia Wang,Yiwang Tang,Jia Lu,Liangyun Yu,Xintong Liu,Xiulan Xin

The development of luminescent materials exhibiting dual luminescent modes for anti-counterfeiting purposes is of significant importance. In this study, we introduce and synthesize hybrid materials composed of carbon quantum dots and up-conversion particles (CDs@UCNP). By combining Yb 3+ and Er 3+ doped NaYF 4 up-conversion nanoparticles with carbon quantum dots, we successfully prepared a kind of fluorescent materials that demonstrate dual-mode fluorescence. By changing the fluorescent color of carbon quantum dots to achieve different down-conversion (DC) luminescence, we produced three dual-mode luminescent materials: BCDs@UCNP, YCDs@UCNP, and RCDs@UCNP, which exhibit blue, yellow, and red DC luminescence when exposed to 365 nm ultraviolet light, alongside green or red up-conversion luminescence under 980 nm laser. Furthermore, we formulated three water-based inks utilizing water-based acrylic emulsion as a binder. These inks exhibit dual-mode tunable luminescence properties, thereby enhancing the security of the printed patterns and positioning them as promising candidates for anti-counterfeiting applications.

In situ-grown ambient-temperature dual-emissive RhB/COF@ZIF-90 composite for ratiometric fluorescence detection of tetracycline in foods

Chenyang Wang,Cuiyu Huang,Licheng Yu,Xiwen He,Langxing Chen,Yukui Zhang

In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on dual-emissive RhB/COF@ZIF-90 composite was fabricated for ratiometric detection of tetracycline (TC) residues in foods. To mitigate the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect of TAPB-DMTA COF, ZIF-90 on TAPB-DMTA COF composite was fabricated by an in situ growth strategy. Rhodamine B (RhB) was subsequently encapsulated within the ZIF-90 framework to construct a dual-emission fluorescent probe. When TC was present, the fluorescence signal at 460, 525 and 570 nm increased linearly with the amount of TC. The I 570 /I 460 and I 525 /I 570 ratio signals were demonstrated in the two linear ranges of 5–100 nM and 0.1–20 μM concentrations of TC, respectively. This multi-signal sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 0.29 nM, enabling highly sensitive detection of TC. Furthermore, this work paves the way for developing other MOF/COF hybrids as multi-emission fluorescent sensors for application in antibiotic sensing in foods.

Bulk and interface regulation of ZnIn2S4/WS2 hybrids for boosting bi-functional catalysis: selective RhB photodegradation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Meiting Li,Meili Cui,Chi Zhang,Zhiwei Zhao,Mengjiao Tang,Xuejiao Wang

ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 hybrid exhibits selective RhB photooxidation and electrocatalytic HER. • pH = 2 ZnIn 2 S 4 could thoroughly photobleached RhB via complete mineralization. • S-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 yielded Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation. • Strong interfacial interaction of heterojunction reduced ΔG H* and ΔG H2O* . RhB molecules could be selectively photodegraded over bare ZnIn 2 S 4 (advanced oxidation) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunctions (Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation). Adequate band structure, interface electric field and S-scheme charge transfer pathway generated more • O 2 – radicals with strong reducibility. Thus, the best R  = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 one showed ∼ 93.4% of removal efficiency toward RhB within ∼ 20 min of visible light irradiation, and RhB completely transformed into Rh-110 after 5 min of irradiation. Strong interfacial interaction between ZnIn 2 S 4 and WS 2 allowed R  = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 electrode with the smallest Tafel slope of ∼ 78.06 mV dec -1 and charge transfer resistance in alkaline KOH electrolyte, which thus enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and cycling durability of ZnIn 2 S 4 . The first-principle calculations demonstrated that the ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction exerts a desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction possesses superior dual functionality of selective photooxidation toward RhB and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which is responsible for the S-scheme charge transfer and strong interfacial interaction. The first-principle calculations demonstrated its desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. Download: Download high-res image (150KB) Download: Download full-size image

PBA-derived magnetic CoS2/FeS anchored on CNTs as a robust and recyclable fenton-like catalyst for enhanced RhB degradation

Zheng Jiahong,Wang Binyu,Zheng Xin

In the context of escalating global environmental concerns, the pursuit of highly efficient photocatalysts has emerged as a prominent research focus. In this study, PBA-derived CoS₂/FeS was anchored to b-CNTs through hydrothermal and calcination techniques to serve as a Photo-Fenton-like catalyst. The CoS 2 /FeS/b-CNTs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic Fenton activity. Under xenon lamp irradiation, an impressive degradation efficiency of 97% for RhB was achieved within a mere 210 s, concomitantly exhibiting extensive adaptability across a wide pH range of pollutant solutions. Even after three consecutive cycles and magnetic recovery separation procedures, the degradation efficiency of RhB still remains at a high degradation efficiency of 94.6%. Free radical capture experiments unambiguously indicated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) played pivotal roles as the principal active species during the degradation process. This research not only pioneers a novel avenue for the design of PBA-derived layered nanostructured photocatalysts but also holds significant potential for future applications in Photo-Fenton-like degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants, heralding a new era in environmental remediation technology.

BiOCl anchored porous g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction with enhanced bifunctional photocatalytic performance for RhB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Jiayang Zhao,Gang Liu,Xinmei Liu,Limin Dong,Dongbo Wang,Fei Li,Yuewu Huang,Zhitao Yang,Wenlong Yang,Liancheng Zhao

The practical implementation of semiconductor photocatalysis is often impeded by three key challenges: restricted light absorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and inadequate stability in complex aqueous environments. In this work, a g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated. The synergistic effects of its porous structure, oxygen vacancies, and Bi–N bonds significantly boost the photocatalytic performance. Photoelectrochemical analyses reveal that the heterojunction not only extends the optical absorption edge to the visible region but also enhances the photocurrent response and reduces charge transfer resistance, leading to efficient separation and transport of photogenerated carriers. Under irradiation with a 300 W xenon lamp equipped with a 420 nm cutoff filter, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) relative to pristine g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl. Notably, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl-2 sample achieved 99.12% removal of 20 mg/L Cr(VI) within 25 min, with a reaction rate constant of 0.10098 min −1 —1.88-fold and 2.72-fold higher than those of pristine BiOCl and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively.Environmental adaptability studies revealed that this heterojunction exhibited optimal Cr(VI) reduction performance under acidic conditions (pH=3). Its photocatalytic reduction efficiencies in deionized water, tap water, river water, and industrial wastewater were 97%, 87.6%, 81.4%, and 73.1%, respectively, highlighting its strong practical applicability in diverse aqueous environments. Common ion influence experiments further confirmed that NH 4 + promotes the reduction process, while CO 3 2- and PO 4 3- inhibit the reaction due to the alkaline environment generated by hydrolysis. Cl - , SO 4 2- , and Ca 2+ had negligible effects. Cycling tests revealed that g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl-2 maintained over 85% photocatalytic activity after five cycles, exhibiting superior durability compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 (11.1%) and BiOCl (39.7%). This work enhance the photocatalytic reduction of heavy metals in complex aqueous environments through the construction of a highly efficient and stable S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, thereby offering theoretical and experimental foundations for the degradation of industrial dye pollutants.

Synergistic boric acid crosslinking and silane engineering enable time-programmable multicolor afterglow in carbon dots via RhB-regulated P-FRET

Kexin Zhang,Haidong Jin,Shenghui Li,Yu Li,Xinying Li,Qian Cheng

Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as promising room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials for advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption applications owing to their tunable emission and favorable biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous realization of multicolor phosphorescence, long lifetime, and dynamic color modulation within a single CDs-based system remains a significant challenge. Herein, a boric acid-crosslinked and silane-confined CDs system was constructed to investigate the roles of rigid-network confinement and the rhodamine B (RhB)-regulated phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer (P-FRET) in governing dynamic multicolor afterglow. Compared with the conventional aminopropyl silane (APTES)-derived network, the long-chain diamine silane (DAMO)-derived network provided additional amino sites and a rigid-flexible confinement environment, which enhanced n–π* transition processes and promoted intersystem crossing, thereby extending the phosphorescence lifetime from 106.37 to 448.87 ms. Phosphorescence spectroscopic analysis revealed that increasing the RhB content introduced low-energy acceptor centers, which enhanced the P-FRET process from CDs to RhB-related acceptors and enabled tunable afterglow emission from blue (480 nm) to red (595 nm). The shortened donor lifetime, time-resolved emission evolution, and reduced energy gap revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations collectively supported the T 1 -S 1 P-FRET process from CD donors to RhB related acceptors. The resulting time-dependent afterglow color evolution was further demonstrated in dynamic digital encryption, multicolor QR codes, and time-resolved logic-gate anti-counterfeiting. This work provides a rational strategy for designing dynamic CDs-based RTP materials through rigid-network confinement and energy-transfer engineering.

Synergistic adsorption and visible-light catalytic degradation of RhB from recyclable 3D mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride/reduced graphene oxide aerogels

Xu Ce,Wang Jin,Gao Boru,Dou Mengmeng,Chen Rui

In this work, a series of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (MCN) nanometer materials, loaded onto the reduced graphene oxide aerogel (rGOA) with macroscopic three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, were prepared using reduction self-assembly method. The composite aerogel of MCN/rGOA hybrid (MCN/GO mass ratio of 3:9) showed the highest adsorption rate of 73.7% for removing rhodamine b (RhB) solution of 20 mg L −1 , whereas the total effect of adsorption and visible-light catalysis reached 95.2% within 80 min. Meanwhile, the material also showed good stability, and the removal rate was still about 89% after repeating the experiments for five times. The material characterization was carried out using various techniques, which indicated that hybrid aerogels were successfully combined. The specific surface increases from 18 m 2 /g of MCN to 149 m 2 /g for MCN/rGOA hybrid. The hybrid aerogel not only has good adsorption effect, but also exhibits adequate photocatalysis. The composite firstly interacts with the RhB through π – π adsorption, and then, the photocatalysis is improved by increasing the electron transfer efficiency and inhibiting the electron–hole recombination for good conductivity. Through scavenger experiments, it is shown that h + free radicals are the dominant oxidizer during photocatalytic degradation.
