As the most active new frontier, a single-atom catalyst (SAC) combining the merits of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts would have a significant effect on the 100 year history of ammonia synthesis research. Here, the Ru SAC has been demonstrated to be active and efficient for ammonia synthesis. To this end, an ideal model catalyst, pure siliceous zeolite-supported Ru SAC (Ru SAs/S-1), which shows surprising catalytic ammonia synthesis activity compared to that of a conventional Ru catalyst, was designed. Both atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectrometric analysis, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy identify the single-Ru-atom nature of Ru SAs/S-1 before and after the reaction. Further DFT calculations reveal that the reaction mechanism is different from traditional mechanisms. Therefore, this paper provides an alternative SAC strategy to design high-performance Ru catalysts for ammonia synthesis.

A catalytic system over Ru-HAP catalyst is established to hydrodeoxygenate various oils to long-chain alkanes in water, for potential large-scale renewable diesel production, which has the following advantages. (i) This system is versatile to different oil sources, including Jatropha oil, palm oil, waste cooking oil, and cooking waste. (ii) Ru-HAP is highly efficient at achieving full conversion from stearic acid to alkanes at as low as 100 °C, and the isolated yield from Jatropha oil, palm oil, and waste cooking oil to long-chain alkanes reached up to 95, 96, and 87 mol % at 180 °C and 2 MPa H2 within 4–4.5 h, respectively. (iii) The catalyst showed high stability during five runs of recycling, ICP-OES analysis, and a hydrothermal treatment. The activity decreased less than 5% after the catalyst was treated in water at 200 °C for 24 h with a stirring speed of 1000 rpm due to the strong metal and hydrothermally stable support interaction. (iv) Ru-HAP is compatible with most impurities such as various salts, sugars, and macromolecules. (v) The system required low cost for operation since no dehydration before the reaction was necessary and the alkane product can be easily separated from water. The reaction route was investigated and indicated that the coexisting hydrodehydration and hydrodecarbonylation are affected by water, temperature, and H2 pressure. The catalyst was also characterized in detail, and its high reactivity and stability may result from the fact that highly distributed Ru nanoclusters anchored on the HAP support absorbed fatty acids by forming a metastable calcium carboxyl phosphate.

Graphical Synthetic methods : We designed a hydroxyapatite (HAP)-stabilized, positively charged Ru-based catalyst which can efficiently catalyze the formylation reaction of amines with CO for the synthesis of formamide. The combination of characterization results and control experiments showed that positively charged Ru species, particularly the hydrated RuO x particles on the surface were essential to the high catalytic activity of Ru-HAP in the formylation reaction. Formamide is an important solvent and synthetic intermediate. Herein, we designed a hydroxyapatite (HAP)-stabilized, positively charged Ru-based catalysts which can efficiently catalyze the formylation reaction of amines with CO for the synthesis of formamide. The Ru-HAP showed excellent catalytic performance in N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) synthesis, with about 75 % dimethylamine conversion and >99 % DMF selectivity at 300 h of continuous reaction. The combination of characterization results and control experiments showed that positively charged Ru species, including hydrated RuO x and Ru 3+ species, were catalytically active. In particular, the surface RuO x species were more active than the Ru 3+ species located within the HAP framework.

Ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles (∼3 nm) with mass loading ranging from 1.5 to 3.2 wt % are supported on a reducible substrate, cerium dioxide (CeO2, the resultant sample is called Ru/CeO2), for application in the catalytic combustion of propane. Because of the unique electronic configuration of CeO2, a strong metal–support interaction is generated between the Ru nanoparticles and CeO2 to stabilize Ru nanoparticles for oxidation reactions well. In addition, the CeO2 host with high oxygen storage capacity can provide an abundance of active oxygen for redox reactions and thus greatly increases the rates of oxidation reactions or even modifies the redox steps. As a result of such advantages, a remarkably high performance in the total oxidation of propane at low temperature is achieved on Ru/CeO2. This work exemplifies a promising strategy for developing robust supported catalysts for short-chain volatile organic compound removal.

Amorphous cocatalysts effectively enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance of BiVO4 (BVO). Nonetheless, their ability to extract photogenerated holes still suffers from limited efficiency and directionality. Here, we deliberately fabricate Ru single atoms immobilized on amorphous NiFeAl layered double hydroxide (NiFeAl-a) cocatalysts as a hole transport mediator and systematically elucidate the underlying promotion mechanism. Our investigations reveal that the formation of Ru−O hybridization states near the Fermi level augments the energy difference between BVO and NiFeAl-a. This modulation increases the band bending at their heterointerface, thereby facilitating hole extraction and suppressing the backflow of photogenerated electrons. These synergistic effects promote spatial charge separation. As a result, BVO/NiFeAl-a/Ru achieves a photocurrent density of 6.78 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) and a half-cell applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.63% at 0.61 V vs RHE. These values are higher than those of BVO/NiFeAl-a, which are 5.77 mA/cm2 and 2.20%, respectively. This work provides insights into the development of PEC systems for water oxidation.

High-Performance Catalysts : The S-Ni-MOF/NF anode enables ultralow urea oxidation (UOR) overpotentials (180 mV @ 100 mA cm −2 ), while the Ru/S-Ni/NiO-NC/NF cathode achieves exceptional hydrogen evolution (HER) activity (86 mV overpotential). • Dramatic Voltage Reduction via Urea Electrolysis : Integrating these catalysts into an electrolyzer to replace energy-intensive oxygen evolution (OER) with UOR, slashing the cell voltage to only 1.389 V at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.3 M urea electrolyte. • Catalyst Design Strategy : Tailored sulfur-doped MOF anode and ruthenium-engineered cathode offer a promising material approach for driving efficient small-molecule oxidation-assisted hydrogen production. The high energy demand of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the efficiency of water splitting for hydrogen generation. Replacing OER with the thermodynamically more favorable urea oxidation reaction (UOR) offers a promising route to significantly reduce energy consumption. Here, we report highly efficient anode and cathode catalysts enabling a remarkably low-voltage urea-assisted water electrolyzer. A sulfur-doped nickel metal-organic framework on nickel foam (S-Ni-MOF/NF) anode achieves exceptional performance, requiring only 180 mV overpotential for UOR and 470 mV for OER at 100 mA cm −2 . Complementing this, the engineered ruthenium-loaded cathode (Ru/S-Ni/NiO-NC/NF) demonstrates outstanding hydrogen evolution activity with a low overpotential of 86 mV. Crucially, integrating these catalysts into an alkaline water electrolyzer achieves a cell voltage of just 1.52 V at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, substituting the anodic reaction with UOR drastically reduces the cell voltage to 1.389 V at the same current density. This work successfully demonstrates UOR as a highly efficient and practical alternative to OER, significantly advancing energy-saving hydrogen production. It provides a valuable strategy for utilizing small organic molecule oxidation to enable sustainable and economical hydrogen evolution. Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) are promising for hydrogen production, yet their performance is bottlenecked by the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with sluggish kinetics induced by high water dissociation barriers and imbalanced H*/OH* adsorption-desorption. Herein, interpretable machine learning (ML) is exploited as a core tool for precise catalyst structure optimization, guiding the fabrication of a Ru 2 Ni 3 -carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrid catalyst. The ML-engineered catalyst exhibits high HER activity, with an ultra-low overpotential of 14 mV at 10 mA cm –2 and a Tafel slope of 34.3 mV dec –1 . When integrated into an AEMWE with a NiFe-LDH anode, the system achieves 1.86 V at 1 A cm –2 (80 ° C, no iR correction) and maintains stability for 200 h. Experimental and theoretical studies confirm that the ML-tailored Ru 2 Ni 3 -CNTs synergy modulates d-band centers, reduces reaction barriers, and optimizes intermediate adsorption, highlighting ML’s pivotal role in rational electrocatalyst design for advanced AEMWEs.

An effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity is the implementation of the hydrogen spillover effect. Herein, a Ru/TiO2–GO (graphene oxide) catalyst was fabricated by means of simple hydrothermal and ultrasound-assisted techniques. By using the secondary hydrogen spillover process, which involves the transfer of active hydrogen species from Ru to TiO2 and then further to GO, the hydrogen evolution activity of Ru/TiO2–2GO reached 23.9 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 45.2 times and 3.85 times greater than that of TiO2 (0.53 mmol g−1 h−1) and Ru/TiO2 (6.2 mmol g−1 h−1), respectively. Controlled experiments and detailed characterization have revealed that the dispersion of GO on the support provides critical desorption sites for H*, thereby promoting the cleavage of Ti–H bonds. H* undergoes secondary spillover onto GO and desorbs to generate H2, enhancing the photocatalytic HER activity. This study enhances the photocatalytic activity of water splitting for hydrogen production by employing a secondary hydrogen spillover strategy, thereby presenting a novel approach for the design of efficient hydrogen production catalysts.

Extensive use of grey hydrogen in traditional hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) severely reduces the sustainable development of lignin valorization processes. Conversely, the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) mediated by green hydrogen is an alternative strategy that promotes the sustainability of in-situ hydrogenation of lignin. In this work, a bifunctional catalyst (Ru/NiAl 2 O 4 ) was developed to assist the proposed green hydrogen-driven cosolvent system composed of isopropanol and water for the CTH of guaiacol. Results indicate that 95% conversion of guaiacol and 80% cyclohexanol selectivity can be achieved at 200 ℃ within 3 h with a high water/isopropanol ratio (6/4), significantly increasing the greenness and sustainability. Furthermore, the recycling experiments verify the stability of the catalyst’s active sites. Analysis of the mechanism suggests that the high efficiency of such system can be attributed to the activation of metal and acid dual functional sites of Ru/NiAl 2 O 4 catalyst on aromatic rings and C-O bonds. The acceleration of the in-situ hydrogen supply is due to hydrogen exchange between water and isopropanol. The participation of water in the reaction is also demonstrated by the presence of deuterium in the product after the reaction in D 2 O. This work provided the insights into the development of a strategy for the production of cyclohexanol from lignin derivatives by an in-situ CTH system.

Water electrolysis via alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising approach for large-scale production of high-purity hydrogen at a low cost, utilizing renewable and clean energy. However, the sluggish kinetics derived from the high energy barrier of water dissociation impedes seriously its practical application. Herein, a series of hybrid Pt nanoclusters/Ru nanowires (Pt/Ru NWs) catalysts are demonstrated to accelerate alkaline HER. And the optimized Pt/Ru NWs (10 % wt Pt) exhibits exceptional performance with an ultralow overpotential (24 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), a small Tafel slope (26.3 mV dec −1 ), and long-term stability, outperforming the benchmark commercial Pt/C-JM-20 % wt catalyst. This amazing performance also occurred in the alkaline anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis devices, where it delivered a cell voltage of about 1.9 V at 1 A cm −2 and an outstanding stability (more than 100 h). The calculations have revealed such a superior performance exhibited by Pt/Ru NWs stems from the formed heterointerfaces, which significantly reduce the energy barrier of the decisive rate step of water dissociation via cooperative-action between Pt cluster and Ru substance. This work provides valuable perspectives for designing advanced materials toward alkaline HER and beyond.

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) holds great potential as a sustainable strategy for green hydrogen production. However, it still faces significant challenges due to the lack of highly efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, a synergistic approach by incorporating Ru atoms into MoS2nanosheets to optimize the structure and conductivity has been proposed, which could improve the HER performance of MoS2under alkaline conditions. Combining theoretical calculations and structural characterizations, it is demonstrated that the Ru atom introduction leads to the localized distortions of MoS2, generating additional active sites for H* adsorption, and reduces the free energy to adsorb and desorb hydrogen. Furthermore, the Ru introduction makes partial transformation from the 2H phase to the 1T phase in MoS2, which results in the change of the electronic structure and further enhances the electrical conductivity. As a result, the Ru-doped MoS2electrocatalysts exhibit the high HER activities with the low overpotentials of 61 mV and 79 mV at 10 mA cm−2in 1.0 M KOH and alkaline seawater, respectively. This work provides a novel design strategy for enhancing HER activity through the synergistic modulation of structural and electronic properties, offering valuable insights for the development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.
