Adjusting the valence band center of Co-Ni-bimetallic sulfides through lattice expansion and stacking faults triggered by strain engineering to boost oxygen evolution reaction

Han Pang,Zebin Yu,Xuanning Qin,Ben Fan,Ronghua Jiang,Shuang Li,Yanping Hou,Wenjun Tang,Mi Wang,Zhikai Shi

Stress engineering can improve catalytic performance by straining the catalyst lattice. An electrocatalyst , Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 -10%Mo@NC, was prepared with abundant lattice distortion to boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With the assistance of the intramolecular steric hindrance effect of metal–organic frameworks, slow dissolution by MoO 4 2- of the Ni substrate and recrystallization of Ni 2+ was observed in the process of Co(OH)F crystal growth with mild temperature and short time reaction. The lattice expansion and stacking faults created defects inside the Co 3 S 4 crystal, improved the material conductivity, optimized the valence band electron distribution of the material, and promoted the rapid conversion of the reaction intermediates. The presence of reactive intermediates of the OER under catalytic conditions was investigated using operando Raman spectroscopy . The electrocatalysts exhibited super high performance, a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 164 mV and 100 mA cm −2 at 223 mV, which were comparable to those of integrated RuO 2 . Our work for the first time demonstrates that the dissolution–recrystallization triggered by strain engineering is a good modulation approach to adjust the structure and surface activity of catalyst, suggesting promising industrial application.

Electronic modulation induced by coupling RuO2 with electron-donating Co3O4 for high-active and long-life rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Xuena Ma,Zhangxin Xu,Mingyang Liu,Panzhe Qiao,Qi Li,Ruihong Wang,Baojiang Jiang

Electronic-state modulation strategy offers great potential in designing RuO 2 -based bifunctional-electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Various three-dimensional (3D) transition metal oxides are attempted to couple with RuO 2 for constructing an appropriate Ru O M interface. This work aims to construct Co 3 O 4 -RuO 2 heterostructures on carbon sheets (Co 3 O 4 /RuO 2 /NCNS) for boosting electronic transfer and regulation. Experiments and theoretical calculations identify the electronic transfer from Co 3 O 4 to RuO 2 that modulates the electronic structure of metal surfaces/interfaces. Specifically, it leads to the increase in Co 3+ content, electron-rich state at RuO 2 surface and electronic accumulation at interfaces. Moreover, this electronic-state modulation optimizes the d-band center in Co 3 O 4 /RuO 2 that lowers the reaction barriers and endows interfaces as the biggest contributor to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. The Co 3 O 4 /RuO 2 /NCNS shows a quite low potential difference of 0.62 V and remarkable durability for ORR/OER. Co 3 O 4 /RuO 2 /NCNS-assembled ZABs exhibit an excellent specific capacity of 818.3 mA h g −1 and a superior lifespan over 750 h.

Modulation of RuO2 Nanocrystals with Facile Annealing Method for Enhancing the Electrocatalytic Activity on Overall Water Splitting in Acid Solution

Kangjin Song,Feng Bao,Zheling Wang,Shengding Chang,Na Yao,Haiqing Ma,Yadong Li,Caizhen Zhu,Hong Xia,Fushen Lu,Yibing Song,Jin Wang,Muwei Ji

RuO 2 -based materials are considered an important kind of electrocatalysts on oxygen evolution reaction and water electrolysis, but the reported discrepancies of activities exist among RuO 2 electrocatalysts prepared via different processes. Herein, a highly efficient RuO 2 catalysts via a facile hydrolysis-annealing approach is reported for water electrolysis. The RuO 2 catalyst dealt with at 200 °C (RuO 2 -200) performs the highest activities on both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid with overpotentials of 200 mV for OER and 66 mV for HER to reach a current density of 100 mA cm −2 as well as stable operation for100 h. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations show that the activities of as-prepared RuO 2 rely on the hydroxide group/lattice oxygen (OH − /O 2− ) ratio, size, and crystalline of RuO 2 . The density functional theory (DFT) calculation also reveal that the OH − would enhance the activities of RuO 2 for HER and OER via modifying the electronic structure to facilitate intermediate adsorption, thereby reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step. The water electrolysis by using RuO 2 -200 as the catalyst on both anode and cathode demonstrates a stable generation of hydrogen and oxygen with high Faradic efficiency at a current density of ≈30 mA cm −2 and a potential of below 1.47 V.

Lanthanide–O–Ru on RuO2 Mediates the Binding Behavior of OH, Enabling Efficient and Stable Water Oxidation in Acidic Solution

Xuefen Song,Haoren Zheng,Jie Zhang,Xuejiang Zhang,Jian Cui,Muhammad Ayyob,Chuangwei Liu,Panpan Su,Zhongwei Chen

The development of Ru-based electrocatalysts with superior activity and stability for proton exchange membrane water oxidation remains a significant challenge. A key strategy is the precise engineering of the lanthanide–O–Ru structure to tailor surface species and continuously modulate Ru–O covalency, thereby optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediate species for enhanced catalytic performance. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict that incorporating the late lanthanides (Tm–O–Ru) into the RuO2 structure significantly enhances the density of states near the Fermi level to a greater extent than the middle lanthanide (Gd–O–Ru). This leads to a lower energy barrier for *OOH as the rate-determining step of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, the strength of *OH adsorption follows the Tm–O–Ru > Gd–O–Ru > RuO2 trend. Experimental results confirm the theoretical predictions: Tm–O–Ru structure enhances the Ru–O covalency, tunes the electronic structure of Ru, and optimizes *OH adsorption. These modifications result in good OER performance with an overpotential of 201 mV and robust stability over 1000 h at 10 mA cm–2. Furthermore, a Tm–RuO2-based PEMWE device stably operates at 100 mA cm–2 for 200 h with a low degradation rate of 0.195 mV h–1, outperforming most Ru-based catalysts reported in the literature.

Insight into TiO2-supported RuO2 catalysts for the efficient oxidation of HCl to Cl2: role of oxygen vacancies on TiO2

Mengshan Deng,Chaosi Liu,Jiaqi Xu,Xinqing Lu,Rui Ma,Yanghe Fu,Weidong Zhu

Rutile-type TiO 2 supported RuO 2 catalysts show a remarkably low-temperature activity in the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of HCl to Cl 2 , i.e. , the Deacon process. Although it is found that the oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 can enhance the activity and stability of supported RuO 2 catalysts in the Deacon process, the role of oxygen vacancies in the catalytic performance has not been clearly illustrated yet. In the current study, oxygen vacancies were introduced onto TiO 2 through a straightforward yet highly effective treatment of the commercial rutile-TiO 2 with H 2 at an optimal reduction temperature of 600 °C, named TiO 2 -600, which was then used as the support for preparing RuO 2 /TiO 2 -600 via an incipient wetness impregnation method. The comprehensive characterizations of TiO 2 , TiO 2 -600, and their supported RuO 2 catalysts conclusively demonstrate that the introduced oxygen vacancies on TiO 2 are consumed for the formation of the RuO 2 nanoparticles with the enhanced RuO 2 dispersion and the increased interactions between RuO 2 and TiO 2 -600, resulting in the higher catalytic activity and stability of RuO 2 /TiO 2 -600 in the Deacon process, compared to RuO 2 /TiO 2 . Consequently, this study not only clarifies the role of oxygen vacancies on TiO 2 but also offers valuable insights to guide the development of Deacon catalysts with a high low-temperature activity and a long-term stability.

Waste PET plastic-mediated synthesis of manganese- and cobalt-doped RuO2 catalyst for electro-oxidation of water with robust stability

Yunxing Zhao,Denian Li,Xuanyuan Ni,Pengcheng Cai,Guanghao Chen,Dongsheng Xia,Zixu Sun,Haoran Yuan

With numerous PET plastics being discarded, mankind is faced with serious environmental challenges. Innovative upcycling strategy to convert waste PET into functional materials is receiving attention. Meanwhile, water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly way for hydrogen production, but is limited by expensive catalysts. RuO 2 , as a potential alternative catalyst, is insufficient in stability and activity. Accordingly, we propose a novel OER catalyst (Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y ) converted from waste PET plastics via a bimetallic-MOF pathway, which partially retains the stacked nanorods structure and forms Mn,Co-doped RuO 2 with decreased particle size. The Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y delivers an overpotential of 214 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably over 500 h; moreover, the method is generalizable to diverse PET plastics. Theoretical calculations reveal the Ru sites adjacent to Mn- and Co-doped sites have low overpotential and favorable activity. This work provides a strategy for the high-value recycling of plastics resources and the development of OER electrocatalyst.

Enhancing the activity and stability of RuO2-based catalyst via nano-confinement effect for O2 evolution reaction in acid electrolyte

Shukai Liu,Huang Tan,Gaole Dai,Shiyun Xiong,Yu Zhao,Benxia Li

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as a pivotal process in electrochemical water splitting, directly determines energy conversion efficiency. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts have gained considerable attention in recent years due to their decent intrinsic activity in acidic media. Previous studies have demonstrated that while Ru exhibits superior OER activity compared to RuO2 in acidic environments, its operational stability remains markedly inferior. This performance dichotomy, coupled with the persistent challenges of active species dissolution and catalyst particle aggregation during prolonged operation, significantly hinders their practical implementation in electrochemical systems. To address these challenges, this study develops a carbon nanotube (CNT)/Fe-Ni@RuO2@PANI-350 composite catalyst composed of RuO2 nanoparticles supported on bimetallic Fe-Ni modified CNTs (CNT/Fe-Ni) and encapsulated with polyaniline (PANI). This catalyst utilizes the anchoring effect of bimetallic Fe-Ni sites and the spatial confinement effect of PANI coating layer, effectively inhibiting the dissolution and agglomeration of RuO2 during both high-temperature processing and electrochemical operation, thereby significantly enhancing electrochemical stability. The anchoring strength of RuO2 nanoparticles on CNT/Fe-Ni support via the nano-confinement effect, as well as the microscopic mechanisms underlying the performance enhancement, are revealed by density functional theory calculations and experimental characterizations. The composite catalyst demonstrates fascinating OER performance in 0.5 M H2SO4, exhibiting a low Tafel slope of 39.1 mV dec-1 as well as low overpotentials of 188 and 225 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively. Remarkably, the composite catalyst demonstrates significantly enhanced stability, exhibiting only ~30 mV overpotential increase during 150 h continuous operation at 10 mA cm-2. This study highlights a simple yet effective nano-confinement strategy to address the challenges of Ru-based catalysts, and provides a practical paradigm for designing and preparing highly efficient OER electrocatalysts with enhanced stability.

Inhibiting Ru over-oxidation in RuO2 via vanadium doping for efficient oxygen evolution reaction toward acid and alkaline water electrolysis

Wenzhuo Zhang,Linna Wang,Xiang Li,Yunling Ji,Guisheng Xu,Yikang Cao,Shufen Wang,Jian Li

Enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability of ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts is crucial for replacing higher-cost iridium (Ir)-based materials in water electrolysis field. In this work, a series of vanadium (V)-doped RuO 2 (V x Ru 1- x O 2 ) were successfully synthesized and employed as the OER catalysts towards proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline water electrolyzer. The doped V can reduce the oxidation state of Ru and diminish the covalency of the Ru-O bond. In-situ FTIR and DEMS results demonstrate the leaching of lattice oxygen during is inhibited during the OER. As a result, the V 0.375 Ru 0.625 O 2 catalyst exhibited superior OER activity and long-term stability across a broad pH range. Specifically, it delivered a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 236 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 228 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the catalyst could operate stably for a long time during the OER process, with no significant dissolution of Ru species. This work provides valuable insights into strategies for enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity and stability of RuO 2 through modification with the V dopants, offering a promising pathway for developing cost-effective and high-performance OER catalysts for water electrolysis.

Interfacial Hydrogen-Bonding Network and Active-Site Electronic Structure Modulation via Indium Doping in RuO2 for Efficient and Durable OER

Mengze Ma,Aiqing Cao,Hai Liu,Huijun Xin,Yun Kuang,Zheng Chang,Yaping Li,Daojin Zhou,Xiaoming Sun

The challenged stability of iridium-free metal oxides in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers has always posed challenges that hinder the development of hydrogen energy production by water splitting. To overcome this challenge, we strategically incorporated p-block indium (In) to ruthenium oxides (RuO2) to mitigate the easy loss of active Ru sites. In-doped RuO2 required an overpotential as low as 174 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and maintained sustainable electrolysis for 600 h at 100 mA/cm2. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results surprisingly demonstrate that In dopants in RuO2 facilitate surface hydroxylation, which lowers the water dissociation step energy barrier prior to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and can also increase the electron density of Ru to avoid the formation of high-valence oxides, which threaten the structural stability of the catalyst. This work presents the critical role of surface hydroxylation and reports an efficient In doping strategy to improve the activity and stability of Ru-based catalysts, thereby establishing a foundation for low-cost and highly efficient hydrogen production.

Balancing oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction processes in Li–O2 batteries through tuning the bond distances of RuO2

Xinbin Wu,Wei Yu,Wei Xu,Yujun Zhang,Shundong Guan,Zheng Zhang,Shuwei Li,Huanchun Wang,Xuanjun Wang,Liang Zhang,Ce-Wen Nan,Liangliang Li

Lithium-oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries are promising next-generation energy storage devices due to their ultrahigh theoretical specific energy. Oxide electrocatalysts such as RuO 2 are often used to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) processes in Li–O 2 batteries, but the relation between the structural parameters and their catalytic properties is unclear so far. In this work, we synthesize RuO 2 nanoparticles at different annealing temperatures and investigate the influence of the Ru–O bond distances of RuO 2 on the OER and ORR processes in Li–O 2 batteries. The results of X-ray absorption fine structure show that the bond distances decrease with the increase of the annealing temperature. The RuO 2 with longer Ru–O bond distances renders a lower charge plateau to Li–O 2 batteries, showing a better OER performance, while that with shorter bond distances gives a larger discharge capacity and is more friendly to the ORR process. The cycle life of Li–O 2 batteries with a carbon nanotube-RuO 2 composite cathode is improved to 287 cycles (1148 h) under an extreme testing condition (the voltage range is 2.3–4.2 V), when the Ru–O bond distances are optimized. In addition, the influence of the Ru–O bond distances on the catalytic properties of RuO 2 is analyzed by density functional theory calculations. The findings in this work provide a guidance to enhance the ORR and OER efficiency of RuO 2 and other oxide catalysts.

A corrosion-etching strategy for fabricating RuO2 coupled with defective NiFeZn(OH)x for a highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Xiaofeng Li,Xupo Liu,Cuicui Zhang,Ran Wang,Gangya Wei,Tianfang Yang,Jing Zhang,Ye Chen,Shuyan Gao

Developing cost-effective and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is imperative for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a facile corrosion-etching strategy has been applied to synthesize RuO2 coupled with defective NiFeZn(OH)x on NiFe foam (NFF) at room temperature, achieving a D/NFF-Ru-Zn electrocatalyst with abundant structural defects. Benefiting from the abundant exposed defective sites and the synergistic effect between defective NiFeZn(OH)x and RuO2, D/NFF-Ru-Zn efficiently improves the poor intrinsic conductivity of NiFe hydroxide and reduces the kinetic energy barrier of the Volmer step, thus accelerating the HER kinetics. The prepared D/NFF-Ru-Zn catalyst demonstrates excellent activity with an overpotential of 90 mV at 100 mA cm−2, as well as prominent durability of operating at 100 mA cm−2 for 100 h. Furthermore, integrated with a NiFe-OH electrode, the assembled water splitting device displays a low voltage of 1.67 V at 500 mA cm−2. Remarkably, the corrosion-etching strategy employed in this work can be extended to other substrates (e.g., Ni foam and Fe foam), providing a potential perspective for designing efficient HER electrocatalysts.

MOF-derived ultrasmall Ru@RuO2 heterostructures as bifunctional and pH-universal electrocatalysts for 0.79 V asymmetric amphoteric overall water splitting

Zhe Li,Jizhao Zou,Tao Liang,Xinrui Song,Zhangjian Li,Jiaming Wen,Minggui Peng,Xierong Zeng,Haitao Huang,Hongliang Wu

Developing heterostructures in nano-electrocatalyst has been demonstrated as a feasible method to enhance electrocatalytic activities for water splitting, since it still remains a grand challenge to develop highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) within a wide pH range. Herein, we report a facile pyrolysis strategy of Ru-MOF for rationally constructing ultrasmall Ru@RuO 2 heterostructures, which exhibit extremely remarkable electrocatalytic performance toward both HER and OER in pH-universal electrolytes. Impressively, optimal Ru@RuO 2 -250 achieves ultralow overpotentials for both OER (198 mV, 263 mV and 182 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 in acidic, neutral and alkaline media) and HER (31 mV, 43 mV and 32 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 in acidic, neutral and alkaline media) due to the full exposure of highly active sites, which are derived from the synergism of abundant heterointerfaces, ultrafine heterostructure size and hierarchical porous structure with high surface area. Theoretical calculations reveal the charge rearrangement and electron conduction intensification near Ru-RuO 2 heterointerfaces, the electronic structure changes of the active sites optimize the adsorption behavior toward various reaction intermediates, reducing the activation barriers and speeding up the reaction kinetics. Deservedly, an asymmetric-electrolyte electrolyzer employed with Ru@RuO 2 -250 is assembled to acquire an ultralow applied voltage of 0.79 V at 10 mA cm −2 based on amphoteric water electrolysis (HER in acidic electrolyte while OER in alkaline electrolyte).
