Mineral dust, soil, and sea salt aerosols are among the most abundant primary inorganic aerosols in the atmosphere, and their hygroscopicity affects the hydrological cycle and global climate. We investigated the hygroscopic behaviors of six Na- and K-containing salts commonly found in those primary organic aerosols. Their hygroscopic growths as a function of relative humidity (RH) agree well with thermodynamic model prediction. Temperature dependence of deliquescence RH (DRH) values for five of those salts was also investigated, which are comparable to those in literature within 1%–2% RH, most showing negative dependence on temperature. Hygroscopic growth curves of real-world soil and sea salt samples were also measured. The hygroscopic growths of two more-hydroscopic saline soil samples and of sea salt can be predicted by the thermodynamic model based on the measured water-soluble ionic composition. The substantial amounts of water-soluble ions, including Na + and K + , in saline soil samples imply that even nascent saline soil samples are quite hygroscopic at high-RH (>80%) conditions. For three less-hygroscopic dust samples, however, measurements showed higher water uptake ability than that predicted by the thermodynamic model. The small amount of water taken up by less-hygroscopic dust samples suggests that dust particles might contain thin layers of water even to very low RH. The results of this study provide a comprehensive characterization of the hygroscopicity of Na- and K-containing salts as related to their roles in the hygroscopic behaviors of saline mineral dusts and sea salt aerosols.

This study employed a computer aided virtual screening strategy integrating water solubility, toxicity, and xanthine oxidase (XOD) binding affinity to identify novel XOD inhibitory peptides from sea cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) proteins. Two peptides, WGNEEF and GGPGDR, were successfully screened, synthesized, and experimentally validated. Molecular docking revealed that GGPGDR exhibited stronger binding affinity to XOD than WGNEEF. In vitro assays demonstrated that GGPGDR and WGNEEF exhibited significant XOD inhibitory activity, with IC 50 values of 1.09 ± 0.04 mg/mL and 2.52 ± 0.06 mg/mL, respectively. Both peptides also showed notable antioxidant capacity in a concentration dependent manner, and WGNEEF displayed particularly strong radical scavenging activity, achieving scavenging rates of 37.59%, 73.69%, and 99.01% against DPPH, ABTS + , and •OH radicals at 1.2 mg/mL. Cytotoxicity evaluation confirmed acceptable biocompatibility, with LO2 cell viability exceeding 80% for both peptides. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the GGPGDR/XOD complex possessed higher structural stability, as reflected by lower RMSD, a more compact conformation, and a more persistent hydrogen bond network. Collectively, these findings provide structural insight into peptide-XOD interactions and support the potential of sea cucumber-derived peptides as functional ingredients for hyperuricemia management. Practical Applications The peptides WGNEEF and GGPGDR, derived from Stichopus japonicus , exhibit xanthine oxidase inhibitory and antioxidant activities, showing potential as natural ingredients in functional foods or dietary supplements for the management of hyperuricemia and gout.

The widespread use of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems have raised significant concerns. However, a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing the environmental occurrence and distribution of MNPs in anthropogenically impacted bay environments remains limited. Hence, we examined the concentration, distribution, and sources of Ag-based NPs, Zn-based NPs, Ce-based NPs, and Ti-based NPs in sediment cores from Daya Bay. The results showed that the order of the average particle concentrations of four types of MNPs in the sediments was Ti-based NPs (5.18–10.9 ×10 9 particles/g) > Ce-based NPs (2.72–9.82 ×10 9 particles/g) > Zn-based NPs (7.37–82.7 ×10 7 particles/g) > Ag-based NPs (3.11–26.0 ×10 7 particles/g). Their concentrations decreased from the inner to the outer bay (linked to terrigenous emissions) and increased from deeper to surface sediments. Sediment depth and organic matter (OM) were core environmental factors governing vertical distribution of MNPs. From the 1900s to the 1980s, the average concentrations of the four types of MNPs were approximately 44–83% of the overall average in the sediment cores, indicating limited anthropogenic influence. Since the 1980s, MNP pollution has intensified, likely stemming from multiple potential influencing factors, including anthropogenic activities (such as industrial/domestic sewage, daily products, fuel combustion) and natural sources. This study has provided solid evidence on the critical but overlooked factors that have shaped the occurrence and distribution of MNPs, providing new insights for sources and accumulation processes of MNPs in typical coastal bays.

Alkaline stress is an important environmental factor in saline-alkaline aquaculture, yet its effects on marine euryhaline fish remain poorly understood. In this study, a multi-timepoint acute alkaline stress model was established to investigate hepatic responses in black sea bream ( Acanthopagrus schlegelii ). Fish in both control and treatment groups were maintained at a consistent salinity of 18‰, while the treatment group was exposed to 30 mmol/L NaHCO₃. Liver samples were collected at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h post-exposure for histological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses. Alkaline stress induced progressive liver injury, characterized by hepatocellular ballooning, steatosis, and significant increases in ALT and AST activities. Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses were markedly activated, as indicated by altered redox balance, increased lipid peroxidation, and upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Transcriptomic analysis revealed dynamic changes in gene expression, with significant enrichment of pathways related to metabolism, immune response, and ferroptosis. Notably, ferroptosis-related pathways were consistently enriched, with marked alterations in ACSL4 and GPX4 protein abundance suggesting that ferroptosis-related pathways may be involved inalkaline-induced liver injury. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms linking oxidative stress, inflammation, and ferroptosis-related responses during alkaline stress adaptation in marine euryhaline fish.

Abstract Eight new eremophilane sesquiterpenes (eremopenicillins A−H, 1−8) were isolated from the deep-sea-derived fungus Penicillium roseopurpureum, along with eight known congeners (9−16). Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and HRESIMS analysis, combined with theoretical calculations on the electronic circular dichroism (ECD), NMR chemical shifts, and optical rotations (OR), as well as DP4+ probability analysis. Compounds 1 and 10 showed remarkable anti-neuroinflammatory activity. Quantitative proteomic analysis and molecular dynamics simulations identified NOS2 as their primary molecular target. These two compounds significantly alleviated neurotoxic damage in zebrafish models induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). They not only show promising therapeutic potential for human neurodegenerative diseases, but also represent valuable candidates for the prevention and control of neurotoxic injury caused by environmental pollutants in aquaculture.

In-situ PAA grafting onto PE fiber increases interfacial bond strength by 69%. • Multiscale hybrid system achieves 11.2% tensile strain and 8.3 MPa strength. • PAA-CW synergy refines crack width to 57.8 μm with 69 cracks, meeting marine durability. • In-situ PAA grafting modifies PE fiber surface via free-radical copolymerization. Combining in-situ polymerization with multiscale fibers offers an effective route to improve the tensile properties of seawater sea-sand cementitious composites. Herein, we developed a multiscale hybrid fiber system comprising polyacrylic acid (PAA) generated by in-situ polymerization of sodium acrylate (SA) as the nanoscale reinforcement, calcium carbonate whisker (CW) as the microscale reinforcement, and polyethylene (PE) fiber as the macroscale reinforcement. The effects of this system on the tensile performance, cracking behavior, and interfacial properties of the composites were systematically investigated, and the synergistic toughening mechanism was elucidated through single-fiber pullout tests and micromechanical modeling. The results show that with PE fiber content of 2 vol%, CW content of 0.3 vol%, and SA content of 3 wt%, the composite achieves a maximum tensile strain of 11.2%, a tensile strength of 8.3 MPa, and an average crack width of 57.8 μm, demonstrating its potential for application in marine environments. SA in-situ polymerization enables in-situ modification of the PE fiber surface via free-radical graft copolymerization, introducing a PAA graft layer rich in carboxyl groups. This increases the interfacial bond strength by 69% and the slip-hardening coefficient by 261%. A refined micromechanical model yielded strain-hardening strength index and energy index of this mix are 2.24 and 79.29, respectively, and the comprehensive performance index reaches 2.18 MPa 2 /μm. These results demonstrate an effective balance among strength, ductility and crack control, and provide a mechanistic basis for designing high-toughness structural materials for marine engineering.

An important environmental issue is the pollution caused by poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and the emitted monomers terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG). The TPA biodegradation pathway has been well documented for the microbial biodegradation and assimilation of PET; however, the PET biodegradation process by marine microorganisms via the EG biodegradation pathway is less understood. Here, we demonstrate how the marine bacteria Pseudomonas chengduensis BC1815’s membrane-anchored PET esterase (OF113_10420) breaks down PET. We also explain the characteristics of this enzyme and demonstrate that the strain assimilates PET via the EG biodegradation pathway. In addition to depolymerizing PET, PET esterase (OF113_10420) hydrolyzes BHET and MHET to generate EG more efficiently in alkaline circumstances. It has been discovered that P. chengduensis BC1815 cells exhibiting surface-displayed PET esterase (OF113_10420) have the potential to function as cell biocatalysts for the breakdown of PET. Additionally, we look into the microbial communities that have PET esterase linked to the EG biodegradation pathway, primarily those belonging to the phyla Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota. Consequently, research on the microbial absorption and biodegradation of PET via the EG metabolism route increases our knowledge of the bioremediation of PET pollution in the marine environment and contributes to our understanding of the environmental destiny of PET pollutants in the marine environment.

Memory impairment affects cognition and information processing, and attention, leading to a decline in life quality of patients. Previous studies have shown the memory-improving effects of sea cucumber peptides. This study further explored the memory-improving mechanisms of sea cucumber peptides using scopolamine-induced memory-impaired mice and identified novel memory-improving peptides within low molecular weight peptide fractions. The sea cucumber peptides were categorized into three groups based on their molecular weights: SCP-L (molecular weight greater than 10 kDa), SCP-M (weight between 3 kDa and 10 kDa), and SCP-S (molecular weight less than 3 kDa). The results showed that SCP-S improved behavioral performance by regulating cholinergic system disorder and reducing oxidative stress levels, distinguishing itself from SCP-M and SCP-L. Further, SCP-S was found to exhibit a well ability in alleviating the degree of neuroinflammation dependent on microglia and promoting synaptic plasticity. Additionally, a novel memory-improving peptide Ser-Phe-Gly-Asp-Ile (SFGDI) was identified by EASY-nano-LC/MS/MS after simulated digestion-absorption coupling of in silico technologies from SCP-S. SFGDI protected against oxidative stress and regulated cholinergic system in scopolamine-induced PC12 cells. These findings suggest that SCP-S and SFGDI might be considered as potential memory-improving food for people suffering from memory disorders.

This study proposed to investigate the inhibition mechanism of the Paenibacillus provencensis (PP-2) metabolites on the dominant spoilage bacteria of sea bass and the application in preservation. Shewanella (71.11 %) and Pseudomonas (13.54 %) were the main genera. The Shewanella putrefaciens (L-1) and Pseudomonas fragi (L-4) were isolated and purified based on spoilage factors as dominant spoilage bacteria. PP-2 supernatant metabolites at minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, 150 mg/mL) inhibited L-1 and L-4 by more than 95 % with significant antioxidant properties. The PP-2 metabolites were detected by LC-MS mainly including organic acids and derivatives, lipids molecules, organic heterocyclic compounds, and organic oxides. According to the transmission electron microscope (TEM) results, Additionally, the metabolites demonstrated antioxidant properties and disrupted bacterial cell membranes, highlighting their potential for controlling seafood spoilage. PP-2 metabolites significantly lowered pH ( p < 0.05), TBARS values (0.33 ± 0.01 μmol/g), and TVB-N levels (24.06 ± 2.25 mg/100 g) compared to Nisin-treated and control groups after 6–8 d. After 8 d, colony counts in the PP-2 group (7.90 ± 0.01 log CFU/g) remained below the spoilage threshold. PP-2 metabolites also reduced protein oxidation, with carbonyl content at 0.33 ± 0.01 μmol/g and sulfhydryl content at 5.26 ± 0.18 μmol/g. The metabolites preserved textural properties, showing slower declines in hardness, elasticity, and chewiness, and lower juice leakage (9.37 ± 1.27 %). Metabolomic analysis revealed that PP-2 metabolites disrupted several key bacterial metabolic pathways, leading to bacterial death. These results suggest that PP-2 metabolites enhance seafood preservation by targeting bacterial metabolic processes.

Background: Antibiotics extensively utilized in the livestock and poultry industries due to their cost-effectiveness and significant therapeutic efficacy. In recent years, the issue of indiscriminate and excessive use of antibiotics has grown increasingly severe, posing a substantial threat to food safety and human health. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop rapid and sensitive detection methods for antibiotics. Traditional detection methods often suffer from limitations such as expensive equipment, lengthy analysis times, and complex sample pretreatment procedures. In contrast, electrochemical sensor-based analytical methods offer advantages including simple instrumentation, rapid analysis, and high sensitivity. Results: Through the electrochemical properties of the glass carbon electrode(GCE) in its original state and under CuCo 2 S 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE, CuCoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE and Cu 2 CoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE modifications, the electrochemical active areas of modified CuCo 2 S 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE, CuCoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE and Cu 2 CoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE are 0.0643 cm 2 , 0.0740 cm 2 and 0.1056 cm 2 , respectively. Using the optimized scaled electrode Cu 2 CoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE, the response error was less than 5 % for five repeated samples. These results demonstrate the excellent conductivity and reproducibility of the composite, while maintaining satisfactory sensitivity and strong specificity. The Cu 2 CoS 4 @Cu 2 S/GCE based sensor has a dynamic linear range of 10–20 μmol/L with the extremely low detection limit of 0.534 μmol/L and a sensitivity of 6.37 μA μm −1 cm −2 . The sensor successfully quantified CAP in water samples with a recovery rate of 99.3 % to 102.5 % and an RSD of less than 3.2 %. Significance: This study reports the synthesis of nanocomposites exhibiting exceptional electrical sensing performance, their modification onto electrode surfaces, and their application in the rapid detection of antibiotics in food samples. The selectivity, accuracy, and practical applicability of the developed analytical method rigorously evaluated. Additionally, a systematic investigation into the electrochemical reaction mechanism of antibiotics conducted, which holds significant implications for environmental antibiotic detection.

Phenolic acid-chitosan derivatives have received extensive attention due to their greatly enhanced mechanical, antibacterial and antioxidant properties, especially in food preservation. The chitosan-gentianic acid (CS-g-GA) was prepared and its impact on myofibrillar proteins (MPs) in sea bass ( Lateolabrax maculatus ) during refrigerated storage was investigated in this study. Fish fillets were immersed in distilled water, CS, GA and CS-g-GA solutions, respectively, followed by an 18-day refrigerated storage. MPs were extracted from fish fillets every 3 days, and then the degree of oxidation and conformational changes of MPs were evaluated. The results of myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) and surface hydrophobicity confirmed that CS-g-GA can retard the fragmentation and degradation of myofibrils. Additionally, the total sulfhydryl content of CS-g-GA-treated samples in the later storage was significantly higher than those of other groups, confirming that CS-g-GA treatment protected the structure and function of protein. Results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and inner fluorescence intensity (IFI) showed that CS-g-GA maintained the secondary and tertiary structure of MPs. The results from scanning electron microscope (SEM) further clarified that CS-g-GA can maintain the tight arrangement of muscle fibers and protect the microstructure of myofibrils. Furthermore, the observation of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) demonstrated that CS-g-GA can prevent protein cross-linking and aggregation. Therefore, CS-g-GA treatment can effectively protect the structure and delay the oxidation of MPs.

Engineering hollow fibers with precise surface microstructures is challenging; yet, essential for guiding cells alignment and ensuring proper vascular tissue function. Inspired by Euplectella sponges, a novel strategy to engineer biomimetic hollow fibers with spiral surface microstructures is developed. Using oxidized bacterial cellulose, bacterial cellulose, and polydopamine, a “brick-and-mortar” scaffold is created through precise shear control during microfluidic coaxial spinning. The scaffold mimics natural extracellular matrices, providing mechanical stability and supporting cell growth. In vitro studies show successful co-culture of endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs), with SMCs aligning along spiral surface microstructures and ECs forming a confluent inner layer. In vivo implantation confirms biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. This Euplectella -inspired scaffold presents a promising approach for vascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
