Lattice distortion SnS2 piezoelectric self-Fenton system for efficient degradation and detoxification of pollutants

Jiang Runren,Lu Guanghua,Wang Min,Chen Yufang,Liu Jianchao,Yan Zhenhua,Xie Haijiao

Both piezoelectricity and self-Fenton catalysis are effective ways to degrade water pollution, but little research has combined them to construct a more efficient water pollution treatment method. Here, a Fe-doped SnS 2 (Sn 1-x Fe x S 2 ) piezoelectric self-Fenton system was constructed, which shows superior water treatment performance. The best piezoelectric properties of the Sn 0.97 Fe 0.03 S 2 system were verified by degrading rhodamine B (RhB). The toxicity analysis of degradation intermediates and solutions confirmed that the toxicity of RhB decreased after degradation. In addition, Kelvin probe force microscopy and photoelectrochemical analysis confirmed the better piezoelectric properties of Sn 0.97 Fe 0.03 S 2 . It has demonstrated the enhancement of systematic piezoelectricity by Fe lattice defects and the formation of self-Fenton by Fe as an active center in the degradation of RhB. In this work, an efficient piezoelectric and self-Fenton technology is constructed to remove organic pollutants from water, which is significant for developing water treatment technology.

Effect of Size Tuning of Hexagonal SnS2 Nanosheet on the Efficiency of Photocatalytic Degradation Processes

Jinnong Wang,Xinyu Zhao,Jie He,Tianen Chen,Lin Han,Qianyu Zhou,Dongye Zhao,Yuanhao Wang,Shifeng Wang

Recent research on SnS 2 materials aims to enhance their photocatalytic efficiency for water pollution remediation through doping and constructing heterojunctions. These methods face challenges in cost-effectiveness and practical scalability. This study synthesizes hexagonal SnS 2 nanosheets of various sizes via a hydrothermal method, assessing their performance in degrading methyl orange (MO) and reducing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The results show that smaller SnS 2 nanosheets exhibit higher photocatalytic efficiency under sunlight. Specifically, 50 mg of small-sized nanosheets degraded 100 ml of MO (10 mgL −1 ) in 30 min and reduced Cr(VI) (10 mgL −1 ) in 105 min. The enhanced performance is attributed to: i) an energy bandgap of 2.17 eV suitable for visible light, and ii) more surface sulfur (S) vacancies in smaller nanosheets, which create electronic states near the Fermi level, reducing electron-hole recombination. This study offers a straightforward strategy for improving 2D materials like SnS 2 .

Construction of Heterogenous S–C–S MoS2/SnS2/r-GO Heterojunction for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Shikang Yin,Jinze Li,Linlin Sun,Xin Li,Dong Shen,Xianghai Song,Pengwei Huo,Huiqin Wang,Yongsheng Yan

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 by semiconductors is of great significance in generating value-added fuels. Here, we construct a novel S–C–S heterojunction constituted of MoS2/SnS2/r-GO by a simple solvothermal method. The prepared MoS2/SnS2/r-GO showed significant photoexcitation of photosensitive oxygen (ROS) by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, demonstrating that superoxide radicals (•O2–), pores, and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are the main active species. The constructed S–C–S heterojunction has a multilevel electron transport mechanism and synergistic effect, which provides the possibility of producing more organic fuel. The photocatalytic materials were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, PL, etc. As a result, the atomic layer MoS2/SnS2/r-GO heterojunction exhibited a CO formation rate of 68.53 μmol g–1 h–1 and a CH4 formation rate of 50.55 μmol g–1 h–1, respectively. This work opens up new prospects for the formation of heterojunctions of chalcogenide transition-metal sulfides.

Interfacial coupling and defect-rich FeNi LDH/SnS2 hierarchical heterostructures for robust overall water splitting

Yue Wang,Weimin Liu,Han Qin,Baoning Wang,Xiangming Wang,Yang Zhao,Feng Yan,Bo Geng,Yujin Chen,Xianbo Yu

Developing efficient, durable non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts is key for overall water splitting. Herein, we present a hierarchical FeNi LDH/SnS 2 heterojunction array integrating cation vacancy engineering with heterointerface construction. The multilevel architecture comprises a conductive carbon cloth skeleton, SnS 2 nanosheet scaffolds, and cation-vacancy-rich FeNi LDH nanosheets. Vacancies modulate the electronic structure of FeNi LDH, while the heterointerface induces directional electron transfer to SnS 2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal elevated density of states near the Fermi level and optimized d -band center for balanced intermediate adsorption/desorption. Consequently, the cation-vacancy-rich FeNi LDH/SnS 2 electrode achieves outstanding bifunctional activity in alkaline media, with overpotentials of only 100 mV (hydrogen evolution reaction) and 197 mV (oxygen evolution reaction) at 10 mA cm −2 . An overall water splitting electrolyzer requires just 1.52 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably over 140 h, surpassing Pt/C||IrO 2 . This work offers an effective strategy for designing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Exposing highly active (100) facet on a SnS2/SnO2 electrocatalyst to boost efficient hydrogen evolution

Jing Wu,Rong Zhao,Hui Xiang,Chenfan Yang,Wenda Zhong,Chengzhi Zhang,Qin Zhang,Xuanke Li,Nianjun Yang

Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ), one transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is a cost-effective and promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in the alkaline electrolytes. Its electrocatalytic HER performance is unfortunately limited, originating from its un-conspicuous inherent catalytic activities and non-favorable adsorption sites for hydrogen. Herein, a tin disulfide/stannic oxide (SnS 2 /SnO 2 ) heterostructure is designed and grown on the nickel foam (denoted as SnS 2 /SnO 2 -NF). The SnS 2 /SnO 2 heterostructure introduces more active (100) facets or a high density of active sites, accelerates the diffusion kinetic of electrons and ions, lowers the water dissociation energies, and optimizes adsorption energies of hydrogen atoms. On this catalyst, superior HER performance is realized in an alkaline medium. An overpotential of 108 mV at a current density of −10 mA cm –2 with a Tafel slope of 50.1 mV dec –1 and long-term durability are achieved for HER in 1 M KOH. This work paves a new way to design high-performance HER electrocatalyst through facet engineering of the designed heterostructures.

Rationally Incorporated MoS2/SnS2 Nanoparticles on Graphene Sheets for Lithium-Ion and Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yong Jiang,Yibo Guo,Wenjun Lu,Zhenyu Feng,Baojuan Xi,Shuangshuang Kai,Junhao Zhang,Jinkui Feng,Shenglin Xiong

Herein, we have designed and first synthesized a unique ternary hybrid structure by simultaneously growing SnS2 and MoS2 particles on graphene sheets (denoted as MoS2/SnS2-GS) via one-pot hydrothermal route. The charge incompatibility between MoO42– and graphene oxide with negative charged functional groups on surface can be compromised with the aid of Sn4+ cations, which renders the final formation of SnS2 and MoS2 on GS surface. This is the first report of the cohybridization of MoS2 and SnS2 with GS matrix from anionic and cationic precursors in the absence of premedication of graphene surface. When MoS2/SnS2-GS acts as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the hybrids exhibit much better cycling stability than MoS2-GS and SnS2-GS counterparts. The compact adhesion of MoS2/SnS2 nanoparticles helps offset the undesired result of destruction of electrode materials resulting from volume expansion during repeated cycles. Furthermore, by combination with their synergetic effect on interface and the presence of discrepant asynchronous electrochemical reactions for SnS2 and MoS2, MoS2/SnS2-GS hybrids are endowed with improvement of electrochemical capabilities. Besides, they also showed outstanding Na-storage ability.

Pd nanoparticles-sensitized hierarchically nanoflower-like SnO2/SnS2 assembled from nanosheets for ultrasensitive hydrogen detection

Yongjing Guo,Hangshuo Feng,Fan Zhao,Li Yang,Qiuni Zhao,Dongyang Li,Shunping Zhang,Yi Xia,Ming Hou,Shenghui Guo

Controlling the morphology to modify the properties of materials is an effective strategy to enhance the response performance of gas sensing materials. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower-like tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) structure assembled from nanosheets was synthesized. Subsequent annealing treatment partially oxidizes the nanosheets, inducing random stacking of the nanosheets, thereby increasing the structural disorder analogous to opened hair cuticle. This structure was further decorated by zero-dimension (0D) palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) to construct 0D-3D hierarchical structure for hydrogen (H 2 ) detecting. The H 2 sensing experiment results showed that optimized Pd/SnO 2 /SnS 2 gas sensor exhibits a high response of 1260% to 1000 H 2 at 275 °C, along with fast response/recovery time of 18/67 s. The gas sensor exhibited a low limit of detection (1.74 ppm). The above sensing performance is attributed to the unique hierarchical assembled nanoflower-like architecture, which was transformed from an initial closed hair-cuticle-like morphology into an open one by annealing. This newly formed open structure, coupled with the composite formation with Pd NPs, collectively facilitates both the carrier charge transfer process and the adsorption/desorption reaction of H 2 . This work demonstrates a promising strategy for developing high-performance H 2 sensors through morphology-engineered and noble metal-functionalized transition metal dichalcogenides.

Van der waals edge epitaxial growth of SnSe2-SnS2 lateral heterostructure for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Liying Wen,Xinyu Zhao,Zhiwang Sun,Lin Han,Jinnong Wang,Ruihong Zhang,Xin Li,Fangfang Cheng,Neng Li,Yuanhao Wang,Shifeng Wang

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered significant attention in optoelectronic due to their unique structural and electronic properties. Among them, SnSe 2 and SnS 2 offer advantages of abundant reserves, low price and facile processing. In this work, we successfully synthesized SnSe 2 -SnS 2 nanosheets with an interesting lateral heterostructure via van der Waals edge epitaxial growth using a hydrothermal method. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of surface energy and interfacial adhesion work revealed that the stronger covalent bonding between their (100) planes is the key thermodynamic factor governing the preferred lateral growth mode, despite their comparable lattice mismatch. The synergistic effect between the lateral heterojunction and the S-scheme interface with Se/S vacancies establishes a robust built-in electric field, which drastically promotes the excitation, separation, and migration of photogenerated charges, thereby significantly enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Evaluation of the photocatalytic performance demonstrated that the heterostructure degrades methyl orange (MO) at a rate 7.9 and 3.8 times faster than pure SnSe 2 and SnS 2 , respectively, and maintains over 70% of its initial activity after six consecutive cycles. This work provides mechanistic insights into the lateral growth mode of 2D materials and, through the synergistic design of band alignment and interface engineering, offers a novel paradigm for developing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts.

Rui Li,Chang Miao,Limin Yu,Haoyi Mou,Mengqiao Zhang,Wei Xiao

Flower-like SnS 2 /NC@GO composite powders are successfully synthesized by freeze-drying a mixed suspension of graphene oxide (GO) and melamine decorating flower-like SnS 2 powders with following annealing processes , which are confirmed by scanning electron microscope , X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectra and thermogravimetric analysis . These results demonstrate that a three dimensional network provided by GO wraps uniformly on the surface of flower-like SnS 2 powders coated with the N-doped carbon (NC) layer derived from melamine, in which the NC layer can effectively relieve the volume expansion and the conductive network can supply plentiful charge transfer channels for electrons and lithium ions . When served as an anode material , the coin cell with the SnS 2 /NC@GO composite electrode exhibits an outstanding cyclic property and delivers an average discharge specific capacity of 761.5, 569.7, 502.6, 415.1 and 290.3 mAh g −1 at 100, 200, 300, 500 and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively. The cell can deliver a high discharge specific capacity of 621.1 mAh g −1 when the current density recovers suddenly to 100 mA g −1 . Moreover, the cell with the SnS 2 /NC@GO composite electrode presents an enhanced lithium ions diffusion coefficient of 1.872 × 10 −14  cm 2  s −1 and a low charge transfer resistance of 129.1 Ω. It is no doubt that the as-prepared SnS 2 /NC@GO composite with improved electrochemical properties can be used as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid modified halloysite nanotubes loaded with layered SnS2 for highly efficient removal of methylene blue

Lan Yang,Qiyuan Lu,Xiao Zhou,Tao Yang,Chunfang Du

Adsorption is an effective strategy for treating water pollution and natural clay minerals-based materials display the great potential for removing pollutants from wastewater. In this paper, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) modified with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were thermally treated to serve as supports for loading SnS2 to construct SnS2/HNTs(C) (SHCx-y). Methylene blue (MB) was selected as a target pollutant to examine the removal efficiency of the obtained adsorbents. SHC0.04-500 could remove more than 90 % of MB (50 mg∙L-1) within 18 min, which was 9 and 18 times higher than those of SnS2 and HNTs(C)-500, respectively. Moreover, the adsorbent SHC0.04-500 with good pH and temperature adaptability displayed the excellent adsorption performance toward cationic dyes and various antibiotics. The adsorption process of MB over SHC0.04-500 matched well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism investigation suggested that the carbon layer on HNTs made the surface of SHC0.04-500 more negative, which mostly contributed to the improved adsorption performance. This work provides a low-cost, environmental-friendly, and efficient adsorbent for removing pollutants from wastewater, and contributes a new strategy to enhance the removal efficiency by a simple modification method.

Entropy enhancement drived high initial Coulombic efficiency and capacity integrated SnS2 nanosheets for lithium-ion batteries

Rongzhang Yang,Hao Liang,Meiran Chen,Fengqi Lu

Layer SnS 2 has been garnered significant attention for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), due to its abundant resources and high theoretical capacity. However, the low initial Coulombic efficiency, large volume expansion and structural degradation have significantly hindered its application in LIBs. Herein, the layer Sn 0.7 (MoFeCoNiV) 0.3 S 2 nanosheets (HE3-SnS 2 ) grown on the conductive substrate carbon cloth (CC) is synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. Multiple elements doping strategy not only increases the conformational entropy which will improve the structural stability of during cycling, but also enlarges the interlayer spacing which benefits for lithium-ion transfer. As a result, the additive-free integrated CC@HE3-SnS 2 electrode achieves a high reversible specific capacity of 1204.9 mAh g −1 with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 94.7 % at 1C, and maintains 1011.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. Specifically, the CC@HE3-SnS 2 anode exhibits excellent rate capability of 670.8 mAh g −1 at 10C. Moreover, the full cell based on CC@HE3-SnS 2 anode and commercial LiCoO 2 cathode displays a stable capacity retention of 862.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 1C. The entropy-stabilized SnS 2 -based anode with high initial Coulombic efficiency and rate capability has a competitive candidate for LIBs.

MoS2 nanoparticles coupled to SnS2 nanosheets: The structural and electronic modulation for synergetic electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Lin Hu,Xiu-Feng Song,Sheng-Li Zhang,Hai-Bo Zeng,Xue-Ji Zhang,Robert Marks,Dan Shan

The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the core components of energy conversions. The chemical-physical properties and morphological structures of electrocatalysts are the main factors that determine the HER performance. Thus, the rational design of efficient electrocatalysts is essentially required. A new heteronanostructured system is proposed, which comprises MoS 2 nanoparticles (MoS 2 NPs) coupled to SnS 2 ultrathin nanosheets (SnS 2 NS) and operates as an efficient HER electrocatalyst. Advanced spectroscopic techniques are applied to confirm formation of heteronanostructure and occurred electron modulation of MoS 2 NPs/SnS 2 NS. Surprisingly, the MoS 2 NPs/SnS 2 NS electrocatalyst is highly efficient for HER with a low overpotential (∼0.249 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 ), small Tafel slope (∼42.1 mV decade −1 ) and excellent electrocatalytical stability.
