Transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) with excellent properties have broad prospects in electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA). In this paper, a unidirectional freeze-casting method was utilized to design a double-layer MXene absorber with orthogonal microstructures. The perpendicular and parallel samples (associated with the unidirectional freeze-casting direction), perform their respective roles in the designed double-layer absorber. The perpendicular sample with various attenuation techniques is employed as an electromagnetic wave attenuation layer, while the parallel sample with good impedance matching conditions is utilized as an impedance matching layer. Consequently, the entire absorber exhibits favorable EMA characteristics. Upon incidence of electromagnetic waves onto the parallel terminus, it is observed that the sample measuring 4.6 mm in thickness exhibits a minimal reflection loss (RLmin) of −60.8 dB at a frequency of 6.63 GHz, with a parallel end thickness accounting for 25%. In addition, the sample with a thickness of 2.6 mm displays a noteworthy maximal effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) amounting to 9.4 GHz, given a parallel end thickness of 20%. A thorough analysis of the impedance matching conditions and electromagnetic wave attenuation mechanisms of each sample reveals that the double-layer MXene absorbers with orthogonal microstructures can significantly increase the viability of MXenes in EMA.

As a novel material with low infrared emissivity, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is promising in infrared stealth. However, the problem that MXene is easily oxidized poses a great challenge to its practical applications. In this paper, a tannic acid (TA) enhanced MXene oxidation stability composite film with low infrared emissivity is reported. TA effectively diminishes the pore size within the MXene film and leads to a tight and orderly arrangement of nanosheets, maintaining the low emissivity properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene itself. In addition, TA reacts preferentially with H 2 O/O 2 entering the film to consume the oxidizing source, while also being able to form coordination with Ti atoms for protection against oxidation, resulting in the composite film exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance. Remarkably, there is no formation of TiO 2 and the emissivity only rises from 0.16 to 0.18 after 72 h in the humid heat environment. Even after prolonged exposure to 20-day humid heat, it still maintains exceptional infrared emissivity (0.24) and stealth performance (reducing the radiant temperature of the object from 94 °C to 47.4 °C, △T = 46.6 °C). In contrast, the original Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene film has lost its infrared stealth performance after 10-day humid heat (△T = 5.3 °C) with an infrared emissivity of 0.76. This paper provides a new strategy to solve the problem of MXene performance stability in humid and oxidizing environments.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composites were prepared by acid etching combined with electrochemical technique. The abundant active sites on the surface of MXene greatly increase the loading of Cu x O nanoparticles, and the synergistic effect between the different components of the composite can accelerate the oxidation reaction of glucose. The results indicate that at the working potential of 0.55 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the glucose sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composite presents large linear concentration ranges from 1 µM to 4.655 mM (sensitivity of 361 µA mM −1 cm −2 ) and from 5.155 mM to 16.155 mM (sensitivity of 133 µA mM −1 cm −2 ). The limit of detection is 0.065 µM. In addition, the sensor effectively avoids the oxidative interference of common interfering species such as ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid. The sensor has good reproducibility, stability and acceptable recoveries for the detection of glucose in human sweat sample (97.5-103.3%) with RSD values less than 4%. Based on these excellent properties it has great potential for the detection of glucose in real samples. Graphical abstract

Foreseen as foundational in forthcoming oncology interventions are multimodal therapeutic systems. Nevertheless, the tumor microenvironment (TME), marked by heightened glucose levels, hypoxia, and scant concentrations of endogenous hydrogen peroxide could potentially impair their effectiveness. In this research, two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets are engineered with CeO2 nanozymes and glucose oxidase (GOD), optimizing them for TME, specifically targeting cancer therapy. Following our therapeutic design, CeO2 nanozymes, embodying both peroxidase-like and catalase-like characteristics, enable transformation of H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals for catalytic therapy while also producing oxygen to mitigate hypoxia. Concurrently, GOD metabolizes glucose, thereby augmenting H2O2 levels and disrupting the intracellular energy supply. When subjected to a near-infrared laser, 2D Ti3C2 MXene accomplishes photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), additionally amplifying cascade catalytic treatment via thermal enhancement. Empirical evidence demonstrates robust tumor suppression both in vitro and in vivo by the CeO2/Ti3C2-PEG-GOD nanocomposite. Consequently, this integrated approach, which combines PTT/PDT and enzymatic catalysis, could offer a valuable blueprint for the development of advanced oncology therapies.

Hybrid layers composed of polyacrylic acid and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene are coated on the surface of Zn foils via electrophoresis deposition processes , realizing the construction of an artificial protective coating with the pre-introduction of excess Zn 2+ towards suppressing Zn 2+ 2D diffusion of Zn deposition behavior . In this case, the abundant carboxyl groups of polyacrylic acid benefit to the fast transport of Zn 2+ in addition to the shield of anions and oxidants, restraining the corrosion and passivation of Zn metal anodes. Moreover, the appearance of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with two-dimensional arrangements strengthens the structure stability and improves the hydrophilicity of hybrid layers so as to restrict the dendrite growth of Zn metal anodes. Accordingly, polyacrylic acid/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene hybrid layer coated Zn electrodes in symmetric cells achieve a lifespan of over 1000 h at a current density of 3 mA cm −2 and an areal capacity of 3 mAh cm −2 , superior to pristine Zn electrodes (107 h) and polyacrylic acid layer coated Zn electrodes (401 h). The full cell based on polyacrylic acid/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene hybrid layer coated Zn anodes and Na 0.33 V 2 O 5 cathodes also exhibits a high capacity retention of 98.6 % after 1000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g −1 .

Electrophoretic deposition (EDP) is a novel and promising technique for surface modification, however, the adsorption of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene or graphene oxide (GO) onto the basalt fiber (BF) surface by EPD and its effects on the mechanical performance of basalt fiber reinforced high-performance thermoplastic (BFRHPTP) composite have yet to be investigated. Here, the mechanical and interfacial properties of the modified BF/PPENK were explored. The influence of the brittle/tough nanostructures in interphase on the mechanical performance of BF reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether nitrile ketone) (BF/PPENK) was elucidated. The results indicated that the thermal reduction of GO contributed even more to enhancing the tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, and interfacial shear strength of BF/PPENK compared to the heat oxidation of MXene. Particularly, these properties of BF-NH 2 @GO3/PPENK were improved by approximately 84%, 43%, 60%, and 118% in comparison to BF-Desized/PPENK. This work may provide some guidance on the interfacial modification of the BFRHPTP composites.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and MXene have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional pseudocapacitance and electrical conductivity that are viable in energy storage applications. Nevertheless, the challenge of self-restacking between the 2D material surfaces and the tendency of MXene to oxidise has posed obstacles to their further utilisation. This prompted researchers to use cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as a prospective “bridge” to connect the two materials. This approach has been shown to prevent MXene from oxidising while facilitating GO conversion into rGO via reduction. Consequently, 3D macroporous Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/cellulose nanofibres/reduced graphene oxide (MCG) aerogels have been successfully prepared. A breakthrough in solving the self-stacking problem and creating a sensibly designed 3D macroporous electrode structure has yielded excellent electrochemical capabilities for MCG aerogel electrodes. Specifically at 1.0 mW cm −2 power density, these electrodes have demonstrated an outstanding performance in 5000 cycles with 79.4% retention rate, favourable areal specific capacitance of 671 mF cm −2 and unparalleled energy density of 60.9 mWh cm −2 . Overall, this study offers significant perspectives on the possible uses of 2D materials, especially in terms of adjusting their structure and functionality.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) stands as an essential modality for craniomaxillofacial bone defect repair, yet challenges like mechanical weakness, inappropriate degradability, limited bioactivity, and intricate manufacturing of GBR membranes hindered the clinical efficacy. Herein, we developed a Janus bacterial cellulose(BC)/MXene membrane through a facile vacuum filtration and etching strategy. This Janus membrane displayed an asymmetric bilayer structure with interfacial compatibility, where the dense layer impeded cell invasion and the porous layer maintained stable space for osteogenesis. Incorporating BC with Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene significantly enhanced the mechanical robustness and flexibility of the material, enabling clinical operability and lasting GBR membrane supports. It also contributed to a suitable biodegradation rate, which aligned with the long-term bone repair period. After demonstrating the desirable biocompatibility, barrier role, and osteogenic capability in vitro , the membrane's regenerative potential was also confirmed in a rat cranial defect model. The excellent bone repair performance could be attributed to the osteogenic capability of MXene nanosheets, the morphological cues of the porous layer, as well as the long-lasting, stable regeneration space provided by the GBR membrane. Thus, our work presented a facile, robust, long-lasting, and biodegradable BC/MXene GBR membrane, offering a practical solution to craniomaxillofacial bone defect repair.

Succinonitrile has shown significant promise for application in polymer electrolytes for solid-state lithium metal batteries due to its high ionic conductivity at low-temperature. However, the use of Succinonitrile is limited due to its corrosion of Li metal. Herein, we report a solid polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity (2.17 × 10 −3 S cm −1 , 35 °C) enhanced by Ti 3 C 2 T x . Corrosion of the Li anode is prevented due to the Succinonitrile molecules being efficiently anchored by Ti 3 C 2 T x . Meanwhile, the coordination environment of Li + is weakened due to the introduction of competitive coordination induction effects into the polymer electrolyte, resulting in efficient Li + conduction. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the electrolyte are enhanced by modulating the ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x to suppress the growth of Li dendrites. Therefore, Li||Li symmetric batteries deliver stable cycling up to 8000 h at 28 °C. LiFePO 4 ||Li full batteries exhibit excellent cycling stability of 151.7 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 99.3% after 300 cycles. This work not only presents a new idea to suppress the corrosion of the Li anode by Succinonitrile but also provides a simple, feasible, and scalable strategy for high-performance Li metal batteries.

The 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene anchored with magnetic particles has garnered significant attention due to its superior electromagnetic shielding performance and low reflection coefficient. However, current research on MXene-anchored magnetic particles faces several challenges, including complex fabrication processes, difficulty in controlling compositional ratios, the predominant use of spherical magnetic particles. In this work, by employing surfactants, FeCo alloy and Ni flakes were uniformly anchored onto MXene, the preparation process of the composite is simple and facilitates better control over the ratios of individual samples. Due to the unique structure formed by the intercalation of FeCo alloy and Ni flakes within the MXene layers, M-FC-N-35 exhibits an average electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 61.2 dB within the Ku-band and maintains a reflection coefficient as low as 0.69. Additionally, the M-FC-N-35 composite was applied to the surface of the temperature sensor casing. It was found that under an electromagnetic field strength of 200 V/m and within a frequency range of 6–18 GHz, the temperature measurement deviation was reduced to 9.35 % of that of the sensor without the shielding material, demonstrating high electromagnetic interference resistance. This work provides guidance for simplifying the fabrication process of MXene composites with magnetic metals and enriching the system of electromagnetic shielding materials.

Lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries are regarded as a potential candidate of next-generation energy storage devices. However, the poor long-term cycling performance arose from shuttle effect remains a challenge. The recent studies have shown that two dimensional (2D) MXenes have great potential in high efficient Li S cells due to strong adsorption ability for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and effective catalytic activity for rapid kinetics. Herein, a polypropylene separator modified by a three-dimensional (3D) TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@CNTs heterostructure using sulfur templates combined with H 2 O 2 partial oxidation treatment is proposed to alleviate the shuttle effect and improve the overall utilization efficiency of sulfur in Li S batteries. The as-prepared separator effectively enhances the LiPSs trapping ability and significantly reduces the oxidation overpotential of Li 2 S, demonstrating high catalytic efficiency and sufficient conductivity to promote the transformation of LiPS to Li 2 S and thus accelerating the transformation kinetics of Li S batteries. Remarkably, the TiO 2 -MX@CNTs modified separator with 1.3 mg cm −2 sulfur loading enables a stable capacity of 859 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1C with a capacity decay rate of approximately 0.035 % per cycle, suggesting promising potential for practical applications. This work presents a new method to regulate the electrochemical performance of Li S batteries.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising technique for sensitive detection. The design and optimization of plasma-enhanced structures for SERS applications is an interesting challenge. In this study, we found that the SERS activity of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) can be improved by adding Au nanoparticles (NPs) in a simple photoreduction process. Fluoride-salt-etched MXene was deposited by drop-casting on a glass slide, and Au NPs were formed by the photocatalytic growth of gold(III) chloride trihydrate solutions under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The Au–MXene substrate formed by Au NPs anchored on the Ti3C2Txsheet produced significant SERS through the synergistic effect of chemical and electromagnetic mechanisms. The structure and size of the Au-decorated MXene depended on the reaction time. When the MXene films were irradiated with a large number of UV photons, the size of the Au NPs increased. Hot spots were formed in the nanoscale gaps between the Au NPs, and the abundant surface functional groups of the MXene effectively adsorbed and interacted with the probe molecules. Simultaneously, as a SERS substrate, the proposed Au–MXene composite exhibited a wider linear range of 10−4–10−9mol/L for detecting carbendazim. In addition, the enhancement factor of the optimized SERS substrate Au–MXene was 1.39 × 106, and its relative standard deviation was less than 13%. This study provides a new concept for extending experimental strategies to further improve the performance of SERS.
