W-doping regulated the microenvironment of Ni2P@W-MoO2 composite electrocatalyst for driving ampere-level alkaline seawater splitting

Tingting Tang,Yutao Cao,Min Li,Shuo Cui,Ying Wu,Zhize Yu,Wei Cui,Hong Zhao

The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes is critical for renewable energy technologies, but still challenging in seawater electrolysis at ampere-level current density. Herein, we design a nanoarray composite catalyst Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 through one-step hydrothermal and post-phosphidation, which shows excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in all alkaline, simulated seawater and seawater electrolytes at ampere-level current density, with low overpotentials of 328, 352 and 364 mV, respectively. Furthermore, an overall urea-assisted water splitting electrolyzer obtained by using Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 as the bifunctional catalyst can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.36 V and operate stably for 100 h. In situ ATR-FTIR monitors the dynamic adsorption behavior of the important intermediate *OH on the surface of electrocatalysts. A series of density functional theory calculations further uncover the incorporation of W ameliorates the microenvironment of the MoO 2 and decreases the H 2 O/*OH adsorption/dissociation energy barriers, simultaneously optimizing the H* Gibbes free energy on the Ni 2 P, which achieves superior electrochemical water splitting performance. This work breaks through the proton-deficient dilemma of the alkaline HER at ampere-level current density and provides new insights into the design of cost-efficiency and environmentally friendly transition metal-based catalysts.

Fabrication of raspberry-like starch-based polymer microspheres for W/O and O/W emulsions separation and purification

Fan Zhang,Chao Wang,Xinyue Wang,Jiarui Wang,Hang Jiang,Kun Xu,Yungang Bai,Pixin Wang

Oil/water separation and purification is an important pursuit because of uncontrolled emissions of industrial effluent , which has a catastrophic impact on our aquatic environment and body health. Here, an amino-functionalized composite particles material was developed via Pickering polymerization and grafting of poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). The wettability of the resultant composite particles can be easily regulated via changing the dosage of PEI. At lower dosage of PEI, the composite particles exhibited underoil superhydrophobicity (UOWCA: 158.8°) which applied to separate W/O emulsions with high flux (∼ 170 L/m 2 h). At higher dosage of PEI, it converted to underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA: 158.1°) and could efficiently realize the separation of O/W emulsions with high flux (∼ 160 L/m 2 h bar). And at specific dosage range of PEI, the resultant composite particles can separate W/O and O/W emulsions simultaneously under the joint action of rough structures, unique surface wettability and positive charge. In addition, the resultant amino-functionalized composite particles were positive charged which could effectively absorb many anionic water-soluble pollutants with high removal rate of almost 90 % during oil/water separation process. This research may provide a new idea for intelligent oil/water separation and purification in the future.

Substance P-induced lung inflammation in mice is mast cell dependent

Nan Wang,Jue Wang,Yongjing Zhang,Shiling Hu,Tianxiao Zhang,Yuanyuan Wu,Xiuzhen Sun,Tao Zhang,Shuanying Yang,Langchong He

Background Allergic asthma is a common inflammatory lung disease and a major health problem worldwide. Mast cells (MCs) play a key role in the early-stage pathophysiology of allergic asthma. Substance P (SP) functions in neurogenic inflammation by activating MCs, and therefore, it may to participate in the occurrence and development of asthma. Objective We examined the relationship between SP and lung inflammation, and also whether SP can directly trigger asthma. Methods We measured the number of peripheral blood eosinophils, neutrophils and basophils and evaluated the levels of IgE and SP in blood samples of 86 individuals with allergic asthma. Serum IgE and SP levels were also determined in 29 healthy individuals. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to different doses of SP, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected to count the inflammatory cells. Lung tissues were analysed using histopathological methods to evaluate lung peribronchial inflammation, fibrosis and glycogen deposition. Levels of IgE, interleukin (IL)-1, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-17 and IFN-γ were determined in mouse serum. Results Substance P levels were increased in the serum samples of patients with asthma. SP induced mouse lung peribronchial inflammation, fibrosis and glycogen deposition, with high levels of Th2-related cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 observed in the BALF. Furthermore, low level of total IgE was noted in the serum, and SP had little effect on MC-deficient kit W-sh/W-sh mice. Conclusions & clinical relevance Substance P levels increased significantly in serum of asthmatic patients and independently associated with the risk of asthma. Furthermore, SP induced Th2 lung inflammation in mice, which was dependent on MCs. Graphical Here, we found that SP levels were increased in the serum samples of patients with asthma, which was independently associated with the risk of asthma. In mice model, SP induced lung peribronchial inflammation, fibrosis, and glycogen deposition, with high levels of Th2-related cytokines in the BALF. Furthermore, low level of total IgE was noted in the serum, and SP had little effect on MC-deficient kit W-sh/W-sh mice, which indicated that SP induced Th2 lung inflammation in mice was dependent on MCs.

Study of Zn2+ complexation driven zein-based W/O/W Pickering emulsions for enhancing curcumin bioaccessibility and fluorouracil bioactivity

Long Deng,Junqiu Liao,Weiqi Liu,Shiyuan Liu,Xiaoxiao Liang,Rujin Zhou,Yanbin Jiang

Overcoming gastrointestinal tract barriers to enhance bioavailability is a major challenge for oral delivery. The innovative design of multi-compartment functional Pickering emulsions would provide an ideal option for targeted co-delivery of bioactive components. In this study, pH-responsive water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) Pickering double emulsions co-loaded with curcumin and fluorouracil were fabricated by zein/anthocyanin (ACN)/Zn 2+ nanoparticles (ZAZn NPs) via a one-step emulsification process. The unique emulsifier was designed by depositing ACN-Zn 2+ complexes on zein nanoparticles (zein NPs). The binding of ACN to the nanoparticle surface through hydrogen bonding interaction enhanced the hydrophilization and stimuli-response of zein NPs. Furthermore, the co-ordination of Zn 2+ and ACN facilitated the formation of nanoparticles with near-neutral wettability, which served as the dominant driving force for the one-step generation of W/O/W Pickering emulsions. The droplet size, distribution and internal structure of Pickering double emulsions were influenced by nanoparticle concentration and oil fraction. Due to Zn 2+ complexation with curcumin at the oil/water interface, the W/O/W Pickering emulsions obtained exhibited high curcumin encapsulation efficiency (91.2%) and free fatty acid release degree (65.9%), resulting in increased bio-accessibility (71.0%). The simulated gastrointestinal release demonstrated that curcumin and fluorouracil achieved controlled intestinal release, which was driven by a pH-mediated competitive adsorption-desorption mechanism. Moreover, in vitro cell experiments showed that co-encapsulated Pickering double emulsions exhibited 2.5 times greater bio-activity than those containing fluorouracil only. This facile strategy for preparing Pickering double emulsions is promising for the co-delivery of different physico-chemical bio-active compounds, which would improve oral bio-accessibility and bio-activity.

Microstructural evolution and transformation mechanisms of W and W-Y2O3 matrices under ultra-high temperature for nuclear thermal propulsion

Guoqiang Wang,Lihua Guo,Feng Zhang,Luqiao Yang,Jun Lin

Tungsten (W)-based cermet fuels have garnered significant interest in nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems due to their high melting point, thermal properties, and compatibility with hydrogen (H 2 ) propellants. The W–Y 2 O 3 composite matrix prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) exhibits greater densification and suppressed grain growth compared to pure W. Since NTP systems operate at temperatures above 2300 °C, the microstructural evolution under elevated temperatures is crucial to fuel performance. This study investigates the high temperature effects on the microstructure of pure W and W–Y 2 O 3 matrices fabricated by SPS. The matrices were subjected to temperatures ranging from 1800 °C to 2300 °C. Below 2300 °C, Y 2 O 3 particles effectively inhibited W grain growth through the Zener pinning effect, thereby increasing the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). At high temperatures, H₂ diffuses into the matrix, reacting with uranium dioxide (UO 2 ), which contributes to fuel loss. The fine grains increase grain boundary density, extending H₂ diffusion paths, while LAGBs help mitigate harmful H₂ accumulation. However, at 2300 °C, W diffuses into Y 2 O 3 , causing the Y 2 O 3 grains to grow and leading to the formation of pores and cracks. This weakens the Zener pinning effect, promoting abnormal grain growth of W, which ultimately results in an increase in high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) and accelerates the diffusion of H 2 . The study identifies three stages of W diffusion into Y 2 O 3 : initial enrichment at Y 2 O 3 grain boundaries, formation of W-depleted/W-enriched island-like structures within Y 2 O 3 grains, and the formation of a Y 6 WO 12 core-Y 2 O 3 shell structure at 2300 °C, providing valuable insights for optimizing Y 2 O 3 composites for NTP applications.

Enhanced Ni/W/Ti Catalyst Stability from Ti–O–W Linkage for Effective Conversion of Cellulose into Ethylene Glycol

Naixu Li,Xu Liu,Jiancheng Zhou,Quanhong Ma,Maochang Liu,Wenshuai Chen

Direct conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol is a promising route for transforming sustainable biomass resources into high-value chemicals. Although numerous attempts have been made to exploit tungsten-based hydrogenolysis catalysts in the catalytic conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol for high conversion rate and selectivity, maintaining catalyst stability remains challenging. Herein, we have developed a Ni–W/M catalyst with good catalytic performance and stability, which were obtained by calcining Ni–W/MIL-125(Ti) precursor. The synthesized catalyst showed good cellulose conversion rate (100%) and ethylene glycol yield (68.7%). The tungsten species was linked to the TiO2 support by Ti–O–W bonds to reduce loss of the active tungsten component. The formation of new bonds enhanced the catalyst stability and durability, enabling the catalysts to retain high catalytic activity during recycling.

Experimental and theoretical studies of carbon monoxide oxidation over W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides: the effect of W addition

Mingzhen Huang,Siyuan Hu,Dongren Cai,Guowu Zhan

It is a significant method to prepare highly dispersed polymetallic oxides using in-situ doping metal organic frameworks  as precursors. Herein, a series of straw-like W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides were prepared by using phosphotungstic ionic liquid@Ce-based metal organic framework adsorbing with copper acetylacetonate as precursors. The effect of W content on catalytic activity of W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation was well-investigated. Comprehensive characterization methods and density functional theory calculations were adopted to reveal the property changes of Cu/CeO 2 catalyst by the addition of W. The results demonstrated that W, Cu, and Ce are highly dispersed in the prepared W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides, and adding proper amount of W can improve the activity of the catalyst. H 2 temperature-program reduction profiles, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy , and density functional theory calculations clearly revealed that after the addition of W, the strength of Ce-O bond is weakened, the oxygen vacancy is increased, and the adsorption of CO is enhanced, respectively, which are vital reasons for its high catalytic activity. In addition, the CO oxidation reaction pathway over prepared W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides based on the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism was studied, and the results exhibited that CO can wrest the lattice oxygen of W/Cu/Ce trimetallic oxides to form CO 2 , which is also proved to be the rate-determining step in reaction process.

`Biphasic-gelled W/O/W emulsion gel for co-delivering vitamins B12 and E: Preparation, characterization, and in vitro digestion

Xixi Wu,Yiting Gao,Lijia Li,Mengjie Geng,Fei Teng

This study aimed to enhance the stability and functional properties of W/O/W emulsions through a biphasic gelation strategy. An emulsified gel system was constructed with soybean lipophilic protein-chitosan hydrochloride complex (SLP-CHC) as the emulsifier, beeswax as the oil-phase gelling agent, and curdlan/anhydrous calcium chloride as the aqueous-phase gelling agent. The microstructure and physicochemical properties were characterized, and in vitro digestion experiments were conducted to evaluate the protective and delivery capacities for vitamin B 12 (VB 12 ) and vitamin E (VE). The biphasic gel exhibited a dense network, high viscoelasticity (G' > G”), and superior water/oil-holding capacity. Encapsulation efficiencies reached 95.92% for VB 12 and 69.51% for VE, with enhanced stability under heat and pH stress compared to single-phase gels. In vitro digestion confirmed effective gastric protection and intestinal release, leading to high bioaccessibility for both vitamins. This study provides a novel approach for the co-delivery of polar and non-polar bioactive compounds.

Superhydrophilic Al2O3 Particle Layer for Efficient Separation of Oil-in-Water (O/W) and Water-in-Oil (W/O) Emulsions

Wenting Kong,Yunlu Pan,Bharat Bhushan,Xuezeng Zhao

The separation of oil–water emulsion using superliquiphobic/philic porous coated materials has attracted considerable attention for dealing with environmental pollution and resource recycling issues. The coatings used may lack adequate surface mechanical and chemical durability. This paper proposes a simple method without other modifications for separating the oil–water emulsion. A porous layer was fabricated by superhydrophilic Al2O3 particles, which could separate oil–water emulsions. The particle layer has the property of underwater superoleophobicity after prewetting. For the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion separation, a 0.3 μm Al2O3 particle layer was used. This layer had a pore size less than about 1 μm to minimize oil flow and to obtain a purity of oil recovery greater than 99 wt %. For the water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion separation, a 40 μm Al2O3 superhydrophilic particle layer was used. Larger particles were used to provide a more porous surface to facilitate oil flow through the layer, resulting in a purity of water recovery purity greater than 99 wt %.

Hierarchically heterostructured metal hydr(oxy)oxides for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Liu,Fengmei Wang,Tofik Ahmed Shifa,Jie Li,Jing Tai,Yu Zhang,Junwei Chu,Xueying Zhan,Chongxin Shan,Jun He

The design of highly efficient electrocatalysts containing non-precious metals is crucial for promoting overall water splitting in alkaline media. In particular, Janus catalysts simultaneously facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are desirable. Herein, we fabricated a unique hierarchical heterostructure via growing Ni4W6O21(OH)2·4H2O (denoted as Ni–W–O) nanosheets on NiMoO4 rods, which was indispensable for regulating the morphology of the Ni–W–O structure. This heterostructure of Ni–W–O/NiMoO4 could be utilized as an electrocatalyst to realize superior activity for overall water splitting in 1.0 M KOH. It substantially promoted overall water splitting with 1.6 V at 30 mA cm−2, outperforming numerous bifunctional electrocatalysts under the same conditions. Notably, the remarkable stability for continuously splitting water endowed this hierarchical heterostructure with potential applications on a large scale. This work emphasizes the effectively controlled growth of heterostructured non-noble-metal catalysts for energy-conversion reaction.

Nanocellulose-stabilized W/O/W Pickering double emulsions from Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo for the delivery of salvianolic acid B

Nan Wang,Ge Chen,Zhenyun Li,Qizhao Xia,Jie Xin,Chi Zhang

D. officinale cellulose was extracted and oxidized into nanofibrils. • CNFs and zein formed nanostructured W/O/W Pickering delivery systems. • Higher oil fractions enhanced emulsion viscoelasticity and gel networks. • The delivery nanosystems protected Sal B for targeted oral delivery. This study developed novel W/O/W Pickering double emulsions (PDEs) stabilized by Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo-derived cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and zein nanoparticles (ZNPs) for the delivery of salvianolic acid B (Sal B). CNFs were obtained via TEMPO oxidation, forming a highly extended, interwoven nanoscale network. Driven by electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, and hydrophobic interactions, CNFs and ZNPs (1:2) co-assembled at pH 4.0. This assembly enabled the one-step fabrication of W/O/W PDEs, as confirmed by optical and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The emulsion droplets remained uniformly distributed and highly stable over a 30-day storage period. Rheological analyses showed that increasing the oil fraction from 50% to 70% induced pronounced elastic gel behavior and enhanced system viscoelasticity. These higher lipid fractions effectively reduced free fatty acid release during simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. More importantly, the construct successfully protected Sal B from premature degradation, enabling its release in the gut. These results highlight the potential of D. officinale cellulose as a sustainable plant stabilizer and establish a nanocellulose-based formulation platform for plant bioactive compounds in pharmaceutical and industrial applications. W₁/O/W₂ double emulsions based on sodium alginate internal gelation: A hierarchical strategy to enhance emulsion stability and probiotic viability

Jingyu Si,Yijie Hua,Changhu Xue,Qingrong Huang,Zihao Wei

A novel W₁/O/W₂ double emulsion was engineered via sodium alginate internal gelation. • Internal aqueous gelation enhanced the compactness and stability of double emulsions. • Modulated viscoelasticity created a robust barrier for Lactobacillus plantarum . • Microcapsules exhibited a honeycomb network with high solubility and rehydration. • The solid microcapsule matrix further prolonged the storage stability of probiotics. The sensitivity of probiotics to environmental stress significantly restricts their widespread application. Here, a novel W₁/O/W₂ double emulsion was constructed via sodium alginate–mediated internal gelation, and its physicochemical properties and protective efficacy for Lactobacillus plantarum were evaluated. Results showed that internal gelation significantly remodeled the emulsion microstructure, creating a compact internal assembly positively correlated with gelation intensity. Compared to the non-gelled control, the gelled emulsions exhibited superior physical, storage, and centrifugal stability, with the 1% alginate gelation intensity achieving the optimal stabilization effect. Rheological data demonstrated that the sodium alginate gel network formed in the internal aqueous phase greatly increased emulsion viscosity. It also modulated the viscoelastic behavior and built a robust physical barrier. This reinforced internal microenvironment markedly improved emulsion stability and effectively mitigated external stress, thereby significantly enhancing the viability of the entrapped probiotics. Furthermore, to further strengthen this protective effect, microcapsules fabricated via freeze-drying exhibited a uniform and dense honeycomb-like cross-linked network, characterized by excellent rehydration properties, solubility, and low moisture content. These solid microcapsules provided enhanced resistance against environmental stress, further improving the storage stability of the probiotics. In conclusion, the hierarchical strategy combining sodium alginate–mediated internal gelation and microencapsulation offered a robust engineering approach for the high-efficiency preservation of probiotics.
