Asphaltene Inhibition and Flow Improvement of Crude Oil with a High Content of Asphaltene and Wax by Polymers Bearing Ultra-Long Side Chain

Xinyuan Li,Shu Lu,Meifei Niu,Ruzhen Cheng,Yanjun Gong,Jun Xu

A high content of asphaltene and wax in crude oil leads to difficulties in the recovery and transportation of crude oil due to the precipitation of asphaltenes and the deposition of waxes. Comb-like polymers were found to be capable of inhibiting the aggregation of asphaltenes and crystallization of waxes. In this work, comb-like bipolymers of α-olefins/ultra-long chain (C18, C22 and C28) alkyl acrylate were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and1H NMR spectra. The results show that, for a model oil containing asphaltene, the initial precipitation point (IPP) of asphaltene was prolonged by UV, and the asphaltene particle size was reduced after adding the biopolymers, as revealed by dynamitic light scattering (DLS). The bipolymer containing the longer alkyl chain had a better asphaltene inhibition effect. However, DSC and rheological results show that the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of the typical high asphaltene and high wax content of crude oil was obviously reduced by adding bipolymers with shorter alkyl chains. The bipolymer (TDA2024-22) with a mediate alkyl chain (C22) reduced the viscosity and thixotropy of the crude oil by a much larger margin than others. Compared with the previously synthesized bipolymer with phenyl pendant (PDV-A-18), TDA2024-22 exhibited a better performance. Therefore, bipolymers with appropriate alkyl side chains can act as not only the asphaltene inhibitors but also wax inhibitors for high asphaltene and wax content of crude oil, which has great potential applications in the oil fields.

Mechanical and thermal stability properties improvement of polyethylene wax-coated tungsten carbide/high-density polyethylene γ-rays shielding composites through irradiation-induced crosslinking

Bingbing Qian,Yaodong Dai,Lingfei Xin,Chuqing Yao,Guohui Wang,Shuquan Chang

It is well known that the properties of polyethylene can be improved by irradiation-induced crosslinking the formation of three-dimensional network structures. This paper investigated the effects of gamma irradiation on the mechanical, thermal stability, and γ-rays shielding properties of TAIC-containing γ-rays shielding composites (HDPE/WC-PEW/TAIC). As a result, SEM images showed that agglomerations are alleviated after polyethylene wax (PEW) coated tungsten carbide (WC). The tensile strength and hardness increased from 25.39 MPa to 94 HA to 29.49 MPa and 98 HA after 50 kGy irradiation in vacuum as compared with all composites, while the thermal stability was also improved. The XPS and gel content results showed that the more crosslinked structures generated after 50 kGy irradiated in vacuum between high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and PEW, but irradiation in air is accompanied by the destruction of polymer skeleton. Moreover, the shielding rates of HDPE/WC-PEW/TAIC with thickness of 2 mm and containing 50 wt% WC can exceed 50% and 25% for 137 Cs and 60 Co sources respectively. In summary, HDPE/WC-PEW/TAIC could be an alternative to lead as γ-rays shielding material with excellent mechanical, thermal, and γ-rays shielding properties after 50 kGy irradiation in vacuum.

Study of the rheology and flow risk of hydrate slurries containing combined anti-agglomerants: Effects of wax, water cut and continuous phase composition

Yang Liu,Yan Zhang,Xiaofang Lv,Yisong Yu,Shuang Ren,Qianli Ma,Chuanshuo Wang,Shidong Zhou,Bingcai Sun

As oil and gas extraction increasingly ventures into deep-sea environments, the issues surrounding the flow safety of hydrate and wax deposits have become more critical. There is an urgent need to develop environmentally friendly and adaptable hydrate anti-agglomerants, and to expand the database and knowledge base for risk management strategies to ensure optimal production safety. This study formulated combined anti-agglomerants with varying HLB values using Span 80 and Tween 80 in different ratios. Rheological experiments were conducted to investigate their synergistic anti-agglomeration performance in water-in-oil emulsions and their adaptability in environments with wax, varying water contents, and different continuous phase compositions. The results indicate that, in comparison to a single anti-agglomerant, the combined anti-agglomerants not only increases the critical time for hydrate formation but also reduces peak viscosity and stable viscosity by 23–90 % and 25–85 %, respectively. Additionally, an index for assessing the flow risk of hydrate slurries under specific conditions was proposed, which demonstrates that the combined anti-agglomerant with an HLB value of 8.6 exhibits exceptional performance across various conditions. This finding is significant for refining risk management strategies for hydrates in deep-sea oil and gas transportation processes.

Ceresin wax enhances hydrophobicity and density of bio-based polyurethane of controlled-release fertilizers: Streamlined production, improved nutrient release performance, and reduced cost

Boning Su,Mingchuan Yang,Bin Gao,Ziyao Li,Xiangjie Zhao,Shugang Zhang,Dongdong Cheng,Tianlin Shen,Yuanyuan Yao,Yuechao Yang

Bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizers (BCRFs) can significantly improve nutrient utilization and reduce pollution. However, challenges such as spray gun clogging, adhesion and tearing between fertilizers during the actual production of BCRFs pose a severe challenge to production chain development. In addition, the poor hydrophobicity and cross-linking properties of bio-based coatings severely affect the controlled release properties of BCRFs. Although some measures have been taken to ameliorate the above problems, the cumbersome and costly modification process is challenging to be applied on a large scale. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to search for a more straightforward and efficient method of production and modification to address the aforementioned unresolved challenges in the field of CRFs. In this study, bio-based polyester polyol (BPP) was used as the base for polyurethane reaction, and low-viscosity castor oil (CO) was used as the modifier to reduce the viscosity of BPP. This led to the preparation of Inter-Modified Coated Controlled-Release Fertilizers (ICRFs) to prevent spray gun clogging. Building upon this, hydrophobic and dense wax-based coated fertilizer (WBCF) was prepared by modifying ICRF with Ceresin wax to alleviate the challenges associated with adhesion and tearing between fertilizer particles during the coating process. The WBCF exhibited remarkable controlled-release characteristics, with a nitrogen (N) release longevity of nearly 180 days, requiring only 3 % of the coating materials. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for overcoming the key constraints in the development and production of CRFs and provides insights into developing green, low-cost fertilizers with excellent controlled-release properties.

A New Strategy for Consumption of Functional Lipids from Ericerus pela (Chavannes): Study on Microcapsules and Effervescent Tablets Containing Insect Wax–Derived Policosanol

Yiwen Liu,Hong Zhang,Juan Xu,Rui He,Jinju Ma,Chiqing Chen,Lanxiang Liu

In this study, we addressed various challenges associated with the consumption of functional lipids from theEricerus pela(Chavannes), including unfavorable taste, insolubility in water, difficulty in oral intake, low bioavailability, and low psychological acceptance. Our study focused on the microencapsulation of policosanol, the key active component of insect wax, which is a mixture of functional lipids secreted by theEricerus pela(Chavannes). We developed two innovative policosanol products, microcapsules, and effervescent tablets, and optimized their preparation conditions. We successfully prepared microcapsules containing insect wax–derived policosanol using the spray-drying method. We achieved 92.09% microencapsulation efficiency and 61.67% powder yield under the following conditions: maltodextrin, starch sodium octenyl succinate, and (2-hydroxy)propyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) at a ratio of 1:1:1, core-to-wall materials at a ratio of 1:10, 15% solid content, spray dryer feed temperature at 60 °C, inlet air temperature at 140 °C, and hot-air flow rate at 0.5 m3/min. The microcapsules exhibited a regular spherical shape with a minimal water content (1.82%) and rapid dispersion in water (within 143.5 s). These microcapsules released policosanol rapidly in simulated stomach fluid. Moreover, effervescent tablets were prepared using the policosanol-containing microcapsules. The tablets showed low friability (0.32%), quick disintegration in water (within 99.5 s), and high bubble volume. The microcapsules and effervescent tablets developed in this study presented effective solutions to the insolubility of policosanol in water. These products were portable and offered customizable tastes to address the psychological discomfort related to insect-based foods, thus providing a novel strategy for the consumption and secondary processing of insect lipids. Keywords:edible insect;functional insect lipids;insect wax–derived policosanol;microcapsules;effervescent tablets

Eco-Friendly Flame-Retardant Phase-Change Composite Films Based on Polyphosphazene/Phosphorene Hybrid Foam and Paraffin Wax for Light/Heat-Dual-Actuated Shape Memory

Yang Zhou,Wei Liu,Shuangkun Zhang,Huan Liu,Zhanpeng Wu,Xiaodong Wang

Multiactuated shape memory materials are a class of promising intelligent materials that have received great interest in the fields of self-healing, anticounterfeiting, biomedical, soft robotic, and smart thermal management applications. To obtain a light/heat-dual-actuated shape memory material for thermal management applications in fire safety, we have designed a type of halogen-free flame-retardant phase-change composite film based on polyaryloxyphosphazene (PDAP)/phosphorene (PR) hybrid foam as a support material and paraffin wax (PW) as a phase-change material (PCM). PDAP was synthesized as a flexible foam matrix through the ring-opening polymerization of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, followed by a substitution reaction of aryloxy groups. The porosity of the PDAP foam is improved by introducing PR nanosheets, facilitating a high latent heat capacity of the PDAP–PR/PW composite films for thermal management applications. The PDAP–PR/PW composite films can implement rapid shape recovery within 65 s in the heating process, which is much shorter than that of the corresponding film without PR nanosheets (185 s). Furthermore, the PDAP–PR/PW composite films also exhibit light-actuated shape memory behavior thanks to their good solar-to-thermal energy absorption and conversion contributed by PR nanosheets as a highly effective photothermal material. More importantly, the presence of PR nanosheets imparts an excellent flame-retardant property to the PDAP–PR/PW composite films. The PDAP–PR/PW composite film can be self-extinguished within 2 s after the flame. Through an innovative integration of flexible polyphosphazene foam, PR nanosheets, and solid–liquid PCM to obtain a sensitive actuating response to light and heat, this study offers a new approach for developing multiactuated and eco-friendly flame-retardant shape memory materials to meet the requirement of applications with a requirement of fire safety in soft actuators, thermal therapy, control devices, and so on.

Wane-and-wax mechanism of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts with constant Cl/N peak under UV/chlorine treatment: Implication for new drinking water disinfection strategy

Jinxiu Lou,Lu Yin,Feilong Dong,Zhanfei He,Huijie Lu,Shuangxi Fang,Xiangliang Pan

Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) are notorious for their serious health risks, yet nitrate (NO 3 - ) mediates N-DBPs generation during UV/chlorine treatment remains unexplored. This study investigated the interaction of chlorine and NO 3 - on N-DBPs formation and developed a specific fragment-based screening method using UPLC-QTOF-MS to explore the underlying mechanism. Results showed that the chlorine-to-nitrogen (Cl/NO 3 - -N) molar ratio significantly affects dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and dichloroacetamide (DCAM) generation, with peak concentrations at a Cl/NO 3 - -N molar ratio of around 15. NO 3 - promotes the production of HO • , which positively correlates with DCAN and DCAM concentrations, also peaking at this ratio. Utilizing our developed method, three key hydroxyl-substituted intermediates that circumvent the previously reported “limiting-steps” in DCAN formation were identified. This reaction proceeds via a stepwise mechanism involving hydroxylation and chlorine substitution to produce hydroxyl-phenylacetonitrile and hydroxyl-chlorine-phenylacetonitrile. The conversion rate of hydroxyl-chlorine-phenylacetonitrile to DCAN was 8.6 times higher at Cl/NO 3 - -N molar ratio of 15 compared to conditions without NO 3 - , attributed to the weakened bond strength of the side chain, as supported by density functional theory calculations. This study provides novel insights into the mechanistic pathways of DCAN and DCAM formation, critical for developing more effective drinking water disinfection technologies to control N-DBPs.

Effects of sophorolipids and coconut wax incorporation on the physical, structural, and antibacterial properties of cellulose nanofibers-based Pickering emulsion for cherry tomato preservation

Guangshun Li,Tong Wang,Qing Wei,Zhigang Jin,Huipei Han,Huixia Zhu,Xiaojing Ma

A novel acidic sophorolipid-enhanced cellulose nanofiber-based coconut wax Pickering emulsion (ASL-CCPE) using cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as a stabilizer, lactonic sophorolipids (LSL) as an antimicrobial agent, and acidic sophorolipids (ASL) as a co-stabilizer were developed. Through optimization of the oil phase type, oil-to-water ratio, and ASL content, the emulsion exhibited shear-thinning behavior and elastic gel characteristics, making it suitable for coating applications. After 182 days of storage at room temperature, the emulsion's droplet size remained uniform, with no significant flocculation observed. Compared to CCPE, ASL-CCPE exhibited reduced surface tension and formed a more uniform, dense, and washable coating. Cherry tomatoes coated with ASL-CDPE remained fresh for at least 12 days at room temperature. Furthermore, ASL-CCPE treatment resulted in a 5.10 % reduction in weight loss and a 45.83 % increase in vitamin C content even after 15 days of storage. Additionally, the inclusion of LSL significantly inhibited microbial growth, thus reducing decay. This green, safe, and effective emulsion offers a promising, environmentally friendly approach for fruit and vegetable preservation.

Influence of tailoring acidic sites and silicon distribution of SAPO-11 zeolite via in-situ Zn modification for superior hydroisomerization of Fischer-Tropsch wax

Fan Shao,Fengzhi Guo,Tianyu Bai,Rongrong Li,Shixuan Guo,Jinxiao Sun,Yasong Zhou,Wenbin Huang,Lu Gong,Gang Wang,Qiang Wei

Improving the performance of hydroisomerization catalysts for jet fuel production remains a considerable challenge, due to the difficulty in precisely controlling the balance between metal and acid functions. Although zinc modification offers a promising strategy to enhance the synergy, the underlying mechanistic understanding of Zn-induced framework repair and reconstruction remains unclear, blocking the rational design of bifunctional catalysts. In this work, A series of Zn-modified SAPO-11 zeolites with tunable ZnO/Al 2 O 3 ratios were synthesized via in-situ doping technique. Characterization results revealed that Zn substitution for Al altered the silicon incorporation environment. The formation of Si-O-Zn bonds (NH 3 adsorption energy = -0.99 eV) indicated weaker acidity than Si-O-Al bonds (−1.44 eV). At ZnO/Al 2 O 3  = 0.5% doping, isolated P-O-Zn bonds promoted the dispersion and dissolution of large silicon islands (Si(4Si)), increasing weak Brønsted acid sites. At higher Zn doping, the mechanism shifted inducing Si redistribution and forming medium-strong Brønsted acid sites. Namely, a dual role of Zn was identified as framework repair at low loading and framework reconstruction at high loading. The weakened and dispersed acidity enhanced Pt dispersion and reducibility, enabling Pt/(0.75ZnSAPO-11 + ASA) catalyst to deliver the highest iso-C 22 yield (30.9%) and selectivity (58.7%), with double-branched isomer yield (10.8%) and selectivity (20.6%). This work highlights the underlying mechanism of Zn modification in catalyst framework, and demonstrates its implications for enhancing the industrial application of Zn-modified catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch wax upgrading and jet fuel cold-flow performance.

Carbon felt/nitrogen-doped graphene/paraffin wax 3D skeleton regulated tribological performances of the MCPA6 composites: A novel strategy of oil embedding and transporting

Hongyu Liu,Zhou Wang,Bingli Pan,Menghan Li,Saisai Huang,Joong Hee Lee,Nam Hoon Kim

A novel carbon felt/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/paraffin wax ternary skeleton (CF/N−RGO/PW) is developed to enhance the tribological performances of monomer casting nylon-6 (MCPA6). FE−SEM results confirm the successful formation of the three-dimensional (3D) CF/N−RGO/PW skeleton, where N−RGO sheets are decorated on carbon fibers. Most importantly, the flexuous N−RGO sheets can accommodate PW to provide sufficient lubricity for MCPA6, working as ponds to store PW. On the other hand, abundant cracks are found along carbon fibers, working as ditches to transport PW onto the rubbing surface. Thus, the ternary CF/N−RGO/PW 3D skeleton exhibits a pond and ditch structure for the efficient storage and transportation of PW. In comparison with the neat MCPA6, the friction coefficient and wear loss of MCPA6/CF/N−RGO/PW decline by (83 and 65) %, respectively. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory support the efficient adsorption of PW onto N−RGO. Therefore, the as-prepared MCPA6/CF/N−RGO/PW composite herein provides a new reference to prepare polymer composites with advanced tribological performance on account of the novel strategy of the storage and transportation of lubricants.

Characterization of morphological and chemical changes using atomic force microscopy and metabolism assays: the relationship between surface wax and skin greasiness in apple fruit

Yanqing Yang,Xiucui Xie,Rong Huang,Kemeng Yan,Mengdi Wang,Wenjing Liu,Xiangquan Zeng,Xiaolin Ren,Hansheng Gong

Introduction: Skin greasiness occurred on stored apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) is generally believed to result from changes in surface wax components. Previous reports have typically correlated wax changes with greasiness scores to reveal the contributing wax components. A notable limitation of this approach is that greasiness scores are highly subjective and influenced by individual perception. Methods: This study aimed to assess skin quality by quantitatively analyzing wax morphology changes in greasy ‘Jonagold’ apples using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) roughness parameters Ra, Rq, Rmax, and Rz, and to correlate these changes with wax composition. Results: AFM results revealed that wax crystals disappeared as skin greasiness increased, accompanied by significant declines in roughness parameters Ra, Rq, Rmax, and Rz, which decreased by 70% to 85%. Chemical analysis showed a significant increase in liquid esters, including linoleate and oleate esters, in the surface waxes, which negatively correlated with the decline in roughness parameters. Key genes related to ester production, such as MdFAD2, MdWSD1, and MdWBC11, exhibited increased expression and were also negatively correlated with decreases in Rq, Ra and Rz. Additionally, 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment suppressed both the development of greasiness and the associated changes.Discussion: Our findings suggest that the increased liquid esters contribute to alternations in wax morphology in greasy apples, and that MdFAD2, MdWSD1, and MdWBC11, play crucial roles in ester biosynthesis. These results highlight the effectiveness of AFM roughness parameters Ra, Rq, Rmax, and Rz in quantifying wax morphology changes in apples during skin greasiness development.

A novel approach for authentication of shellac resin in the shellac-based edible coatings: Contain shellac or not in the fruit wax preservative coating

Kun Li,Baoshan Tang,Wenwen Zhang,Xinghao Tu,Jinju Ma,Shujie Xing,Ying Shao,Jing Zhu,Fuhou Lei,Hong Zhang

As an edible coating substrate, the detection of shellac resin has always been an intractable problem. In this paper, an authentication method of shellac resin in shellac-based edible coatings was established. Results showed that the authentication of shellac resin could be skillfully transformed as the identification of 13 targeted metabolites which were monomer compounds of shellac resin. The 13 targeted metabolites were further divided into 6 differential metabolites and 7 common metabolites with the metabonomic method and difference analysis of targeted metabolite contents. Then, four commercial soi-disant shellac-based coating solutions were selected to verify the feasibility of this method, and 7 common metabolites were detected in only one commercial sample, highly consistent with the results of shellac resin. All the above results indicated that the targeted metabolomics approach established in this study could provide a scientific basis for the qualitative authentication of shellac resin in the preservation coating.
