Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ heterovalent co-substitution enables charge compensation and modifies the Er 3+ crystal field in garnet solid solutions. • Upconversion intensity of Er 3+ is enhanced over 4-fold for green emission and 3-fold for red emission. • The FIR thermometry exhibits excellent performance, achieving S r = 1.20% K −1 (@298 K) and δT ∼0.41 K. Heterovalent cation co-substitution is an effective strategy to regulate the crystal field and luminescence in rare-earth-doped phosphors. Here, Er 3+ -activated garnet solid solutions Gd 3 Zn x Ga 5–2 x Ge x O 12 ( x = 0.5–2) (GZG 5–2 x G) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction. A Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ pair was introduced to replace two Ga 3+ ions, enabling charge compensation and modifying the crystal field of Er 3+ . With Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ composition variation, the upconverison of green emission dominates at x = 0.5, while red emission peaks at x = 1. The Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ co-substitution significantly enhances luminescence, with GZG 4 G:10%Er 3+ and GZG 3 G:10%Er 3+ exhibiting over 4-fold (green upconversion) and 3-fold (red upconversion) intensity enhancement compared to GZGG:10%Er 3 + . The optical thermometry was constructed over 298–573 K, with a maximum relative sensitivity (S r ) of 1.20% K −1 and a minimal temperature resolution (δ T ) of ∼ 0.41 K at 298 K. The results demonstrate that the Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ co-substitution effectively tunes the upconversion emission and thermometric performance of Er 3 + -doped garnets, offering a feasible strategy for optimizing garnet-based optical temperature sensors. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries present several advantages, including high safety and low cost. However, severe dendrite growth and side reactions at the zinc anode significantly impede their cycle life and efficiency. This study proposes a zinc deposition regulation strategy based on a synergistic “chelation-relay” mechanism achieved by constructing a phthalocyanine functional layer on the surface of a cellulose separator. The phthalocyanine layer, which is rich in nitrogen coordination centers, effectively chelates Zn2+, reshaping the electrode/electrolyte interface structure and inhibiting side reactions. Its macrocyclic conjugated architecture functions as an “ion relay”, facilitating reversible storage and providing ordered migration channels for Zn2+, thereby alleviating concentration polarization and promoting uniform deposition. COMSOL simulation results demonstrate that this functional layer can homogenize the interfacial electric field and Zn2+ flux, thereby suppressing the “tip effect” associated with dendrite formation. Consequently, stable zinc deposition and stripping over 1000 cycles under conditions of 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2 yield an average coulombic efficiency of 99.1%. Furthermore, the Zn/I2 full cell exhibits a capacity retention rate of 98.83% after 10 000 cycles at a discharge rate of 1 A g−1. These findings underscore the potential of phthalocyanine to regulate zinc deposition, contributing to the development of high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation large-scale energy storage systems, owing to their safety features and substantial theoretical specific capacity. Nevertheless, their application remains hindered by uncontrollable dendrite growth and side reactions on zinc anodes. In this work, an innovative chitosan/gelatin (CS/Gel) composite polymer gel interfacial layer was engineered through physical cross-linking and facile coating methods. Theoretical calculations revealed that the abundant functional groups in CS/Gel exhibited strong interactions with Zn2+, which promoted rapid desolvation of [Zn(H2O)6]2+ and captured H2O molecules. Additionally, multi-physics field simulations exhibited that the crosslinked networks of Zn@CS/Gel could homogenize the current density distribution and zinc ion concentration distribution on the anode surface, facilitating dense and homogeneous zinc deposition. Importantly, the Zn@CS/Gel symmetric cell provided a stable cycle life of 4400 h at 0.5 mA cm−2. The Zn@CS/Gel‖MnO2 cell could exhibit stable cycle life up to 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. The rational design of the composite protective layer provides effective guidance for designing robust zinc anodes in AZIBs.

Due to high safety and low-cost, aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are expected to be a promising next-generation energy storage technology. Exploiting high capacity and stable cathode materials are extremely important for the development of aqueous ZIBs. However, commercial V 2 O 5 despite its high theoretical specific capacity, suffers from structural instability during charging and discharging, and strong electrostatic forces seriously limit the diffusion of Zn 2+ . Herein, a novel dynamic transport mechanism of Zn 2+ is designed by intercalating organic cations (C 8 H 15 N 2 + ) from ionic liquids into the interlayers of V 2 O 5 . The electrostatic interaction between the C 8 H 15 N 2 + and the V-O layers enhance the structure stability of the layers and increase the interlayer spacing. Meanwhile, the C 8 H 15 N 2 + between the V-O layers reduce the diffusion energy barrier of Zn 2+ and enable the rapid dynamically transport of Zn 2+ . The diffusion coefficient is enhanced by an order of magnitude. The optimized V 2 O 5 cathode exhibits a high capacity of 268 mA h/g at 100 mA/g and excellent cycling stability (over 500 cycles at 200 mA/g with nearly 100 % coulombic efficiency). The home-made pouch cells deliver a high energy density of 310 W h kg −1 . This interesting idea opens up a new research direction for high-energy secondary batteries.

Zn 2 + and F − ions are successfully used to modify pure Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 via a co-precipitation method followed by calcination at 400 ∘ C for 5 h in an Ar atmosphere in order to further investigate the reaction mechanism of the fluoride modification process. Zn 2 + and F − co-modified Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements. After the modification process, no ZnF 2 coating layer is formed on the surface of Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 , instead, F − ions react with Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 to generate a new phase, composed of a small amount of anatase TiO 2 , rutile TiO 2 , LiF, and Zn 2 + ions are suspected to form a ZnO coating layer on Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 particles. The electrolyte reduction decomposition is suppressed in Zn 2 + and F − co-modified Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 due to the ZnO coating layer. 1 wt.% Zn 2 + and F − co-modified Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 exhibits the best rate capability, which leads to a charge capacity of 236.7, 227.8, 222.1, 202.7, 188.9 and 150.7 mAh g − 1 at 0.2C, 0.5C, 1C, 3C, 5C and 10C, respectively, between 0 V and 3 V. Furthermore, 1 wt.% Zn 2 + and F − co-modified Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 exhibits 96.0% charge capacity retention at 3C rate after 200 cycles, which is significantly higher than that of pure Li 4 Ti 5 O 1 2 (78.4%).

Vanadates possess a crystal structure conducive to Zn 2+ migration, establishing them as promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, the continuous intercalation/deintercalation of Zn 2+ causes repeated expansion and contraction of the vanadate interlayer spacing, potentially leading to structural distortion. This distortion reduces active sites and promotes V dissolution and structural collapse. This work presents a novel approach to constructing low-dimensional AgVO 3 @Ag 2 Cu(VO 3 ) 4 heterostructure cathodes through atomic-nanoscale synergistic effects for application as cathodes in AZIBs. Distinguished from conventional composite materials, this design strategically constructs a Cu–O–V covalent bonding network that strengthens metal-oxygen interactions and enhances interlayer electrostatic screening effects, thereby significantly improving interlayer stability. Ex-situ XPS and X-ray diffraction analyses verified the charging/discharging mechanism as embedding/dembedding of Zn 2+ in Ag@Zn 3 V 2 O 7 (OH) 2 ·2(H 2 O), coupled with a reversible reduction of some Ag + to Ag 0 during the charging/discharging process. Simultaneously, the in-situ phase transformation generates a three-dimensional percolating Ag conductive network, enabling self-reinforcing electrical conductivity. Electrochemical characterization demonstrates that this integrated design allows the material to deliver exceptional performance: a high specific capacity of 135.3 mAh g -1 at 3.0 A g -1 , retaining over 80% capacity after 1460 cycles. Its power density reaches 732.61 W kg -1 with an energy density of 168.5 Wh kg -1 . The pioneering implementation of AgVO 3 @Ag 2 Cu(VO 3 ) 4 composite material as a cathode material establishes a novel approach for the enhancement of AZIB materials.

Super-resolution three-dimensional optical storage has emerged as a promising approach to achieve petabit-level capacity on a DVD-sized disk. Doping photoresists (PR) with aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) provides a multifunctional medium for super-resolution writing and reading. However, achieving high nanoscale fluorescence contrast (ON/OFF ratio) remains a key obstacle to improving recording capacity, readout accuracy, and speed. Here, we introduce a Zn2+-doping approach for optically stimulated AIE that significantly enhances fluorescence contrast. By enhancing the photopolymerization degree to further restrict intramolecular motions of AIEgens, a 1.5-fold contrast improvement was achieved. Consequently, the photosensitivity was boosted, enabling a 33% reduction in the required writing laser power without compromising signal intensity. Our work establishes a practical route toward energy-efficient, reliable optical storage, supporting long-term, low-carbon preservation of massive data.

Surlyn-Zn 2+ and zinc stearate have been used to synergistic modify ethylene–acrylic acid co-polymer (EAA), and the EAA/Surlyn-Zn 2+ /zinc stearate blend was prepared by blending and extrusion. The morphological and physical properties of self-made ionic inter-layer membranes were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, rotating rheometer, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results show that the combination of Surlyn-Zn 2+ and zinc stearate significantly improves the mechanical properties, crystallinity, thermal stability, and rheological properties of the self-made ionic interlayer. The scanning electron microscope results indicate that the phases have been improved. The light transmittance, yield strength, and bonding strength of safety glass are improved significantly by using a ternary blend system as an interlayer film with the ratio 90/10/0.6 for EAA/Surlyn-Zn 2+ /zinc stearate. Meanwhile, the light transmittance for the safety glass reached 80.58% and the yield strength reached 73.1 MPa. Furthermore, no degumming can be seen in the glass broke during the bond strength test. The sensitive detection of sulfonamide antibiotic (SA) residues is of great significance to ecosystems and public health. To overcome the defect of poor water dispersion stability and low sensitivity of SA detection systems, a terpyridine@Zn2+-modified mesoporous silica, denoted ATpy@Zn-SBA-15, was developed and applied as a highly sensitive and quickly responsive fluorescent sensor for the detection of SAs in tap water and milk. Terpyridine, with three pyridine groups, can form a stable complex with Zn2+. The Zn2+ in terpyridine@Zn2+ provides binding sites to recognize SAs such as sulfathiazole (STZ) by forming conjugates between ATpy@Zn-SBA-15 and STZ, thus facilitating energy transfer from the organic functional groups of ATpy@Zn-SBA-15 to STZ, resulting in efficient changes in fluorescence spectra. When the concentration of SAs such as STZ increased, the fluorescence emission intensity of ATpy@Zn-SBA-15 suspensions at 429 nm gradually decreased. ATpy@Zn-SBA-15 exhibited relatively low detection limits of 0.17, 0.63, 0.52, 0.57 and 0.54 μM for STZ, sulfamethizole, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfamerazine and sulfamethoxypyridazine, respectively. Compared with the material without Zn2+, ATpy@Zn-SBA-15 displayed remarkably enhanced SA sensitivity, which demonstrated that introducing the Zn2+ sites played a crucial role for both specific recognition of SAs and fluorescence response signals. Prominently, this proposed strategy can be applied for detecting other antibiotics by varying the organic functional groups and metal sites.

In this work, a novel sustained released system (VCSB-Zn(II)) for zinc supplements was built by vanillin-chitosan Schiff base (VCSB) chelated with Zn 2+ to improve the zinc trace element utilization ratio. Samples were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, XRD, SEM, and TGA. The results showed that VCSB exhibited a more excellent chelation capacity of Zn 2+ than chitosan. The chelation capacity of VCSB was about 1.7 times more than that of chitosan, corresponding to 50.96 mg/g and 29.91 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, VCSB-Zn(II) showed excellent sustained released performance at simulated gastric fluid because of the acid slow-dissolving ability. And the higher the C N content of VCSB, the higher the cumulative release rate ( R i ) of Zn 2+ , the highest R i reached 77.81%. The sustained released curves were described by the first-order and Korsmeyer-Peppas equation, which described the Zn 2+ sustained released performance caused by the dissolution of VCSB-Zn(II) and Fick diffusion. This Zn 2+ sustained released system shows great potential in the application in the field of trace elements supplements for animals.

An effective soft-template strategy using Zn 2+ metal ions is proposed to construct well-ordered ionic conductive channels in the imidazolium (Im + ) functionalized polysulfone anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The divalent Zn 2+ ion possesses strong electrostatic interactions to induce better microphase separation . The further removal of the sub-nanoscale water-soluble Zn 2+ ions introduces free volumes to connect ionic pathways, meanwhile promotes the secondary aggregation of Im + groups. Experiment and simulation show that Zn 2+ ions organize into Zn 2+ self-aggregations and interact with Im + groups via an electrostatic anion-bridged configuration in the Zn 2+ incorporated membranes, and the subsequent Zn 2+ removal increases the free volume and induces the rearrangement of Im + groups to form bigger ionic clusters (up to 7.7 nm) than those in the pristine membrane. By optimizing Zn 2+ content, the induced ionic conductive channels are tailored, yielding a 50% improvement of hydroxide conductivity and achieving the top level in the previously reported polysufone-based main-chain-type AEMs. This study suggests a novel and scalable route for regulating micro-phase separations in AEMs and provides theoretical exploration for selecting effective template molecules.

Zinc-incorporated biomaterials show promoting effects on osteogenesis; however, excessive zinc ions lead to cytotoxic reactions and also have other adverse effects. Therefore, the double-edged effects of Zn2+ microenvironments on osteogenesis may become critical issues for new material development. This study systematically investigated the bidirectional influences of diverse Zn2+ microenvironments on the cell adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation and apoptosis of rBMSCs. Furthermore, the mechanisms of zinc-induced osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs and of cell apoptosis induced by high concentration of Zn2+ were both discussed in detail. The results indicated that the Zn2+ microenvironments of 2 μg mL−1 and 5 μg mL−1 effectively improved the initial adhesion and proliferation of rBMSCs, while that of 15 μg mL−1 had exactly the opposite effect. More importantly, the suitable Zn2+ microenvironments (2 μg mL−1 and 5 μg mL−1) moderately increased the intracellular Zn2+ concentration by regulating zinc transportation, and then activated the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway to induce the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs. In contrast, the high Zn2+ concentration (15 μg mL−1) not only inhibited the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs by damaging intracellular zinc homeostasis, but also induced rBMSC apoptosis by enhancing intracellular ROS generation. The current study clarified the double-edged effects of Zn2+ microenvironments on the osteogenic properties of rBMSCs and the related mechanisms, and may provide valuable guidance for optimizing the design of zinc-doped biomaterials and zinc-based alloys.
