ZnFe 2 O 4 (ZFO) poses great potential to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and responds to visible light. In this work, ZFO was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method . In order to obtain the most desirable photoelectric performance, hydrothermal reaction parameters including pH, temperature, and time were innovatively regulated. Based on optimized ZFO, the visible light/PMS/ZFO (Vis/PMS/ZFO) system was established, which presented superior degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin (CIP). It was verified that •OH and 1 O 2 were the main reactive species for CIP degradation. Besides, visible light was confirmed to promote formation of reactive species and accelerate charge transfer simultaneously. Therefore, the possible mechanism of catalysis was proposed and the enhancement of visible light for the PMS/ZFO system was elaborated. Based on the identified intermediates, three pathways of CIP degradation were illustrated. Moreover, water matrix posed an overall positive impact on CIP degradation. Experiments performing in real wastewater and repeated tests validated wide application of the Vis/PMS/ZFO system. In general, the designed synthesis of ZFO is feasible and the integration of ZFO with visible light for efficient PMS activation is a successful and promising method for wastewater treatment .

Heterogeneous interface regulation plays an important role in tailoring the intrinsic electromagnetic (EM) properties for obtaining excellent EM wave absorption, which still faces huge challenge. In this work, bi-metal MOFs-derived ZnFe 2 O 4 –ZnO-Fe@C (ZZFC) microspheres with custom-built heterogeneous interfaces are successfully fabricated via a confined growth strategy. Bi-metal Fe–Zn–ZIF with tailored coordination structure and chemical bonding are first selected as the precursor template. After undergoing the annealing process, the metal Fe 2+ host is converted into magnetic Fe nanoparticles (NPs). The Zn 2+ host is transformed into semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) with increasing (101) crystal-oriented growth. At the same time, metal hosts Fe 2+ and Zn 2+ are further reacted to synthesize the zinc ferrite (ZnFe 2 O 4 ). Formed Fe nanoparticles catalyze organic ligands to constitute graphitized carbon layers, which confine the further growth of ZnFe 2 O 4 , ZnO, and Fe NPs. Combined with the well impendence and synergy absorption mechanism (magnetic loss, interface polarization, and conduction loss), optimized magnetic–dielectric ZnFe 2 O 4 –ZnO-Fe@C microspheres exhibit outstanding EM wave absorption with the minimum reflection loss −66.5 dB at only 2.0 mm thickness. Bi-metal MOF-derived magnetic–dielectric absorption materials with tailored heterogeneous interfaces provide a new sight to design an efficient EM wave absorption system.

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) combined with zinc ferrite-reduced graphene oxide (ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO) nanocomposites were used for the degradation of aqueous methylparaben (MeP). ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites were prepared using the hydrothermal method, with the structure and photoelectric properties of nanocomposites then characterized. The effects of discharge power, initial MeP concentration, initial pH, and air flow rate on MeP degradation efficiency were investigated, and the multi-catalytic mechanism and MeP degradation pathways were established. Results showed that ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites with a 10%:90% mass ratio of GO:ZnFe 2 O 4 had an optimal catalytic effect. The MeP degradation efficiency of NTP combined with ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO (10 wt%), was approximately 25% higher than that of NTP alone. Conditions favorable for MeP degradation included higher discharge power, lower MeP concentration, neutral pH value, and higher air flow rate. The degradation of MeP by NTP combined with ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. O 2 •- , •OH, H 2 O 2, and O 3 were found to play important roles in the MeP degradation, as part of the multi-catalytic mechanism of NTP combined with ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites. MeP degradation pathways were proposed based on the degradation intermediates detected by gas chromatography mass spectrometry, including demethylation, hydroxylation, carboxylation , ring-opening, and mineralization reactions. The prepared ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites provide an approach for improved contaminant degradation efficiency, with reduced energy consumption in the NTP process.

A novel magnetic InVO 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 composite with the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic activity has been prepared using a hydrothermal method and characterized by a series of analytical techniques. The addition of ZnFe 2 O 4 not only improves the adsorption capability in the case of more active sites and positive zeta potential but also broadens the absorption range and promotes visible light harvesting. The optimum activity was found at a mole ratio of ZnFe 2 O 4 :InVO 4 = 3:1 (IZ-4). The removal rate for methylene blue (MB) under the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic reaches 88.74%, which is 6.87 times and 14.11 times that of the pure InVO 4 and ZnFe 2 O 4 , respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherm investigations indicate that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB as 97.12 mg/g is achieved on the IZ-4 composite, which is better than the adsorbents reported previously. A type-II heterojunction between InVO 4 and ZnFe 2 O 4 based on the results of Mott-Schottky (M-S) plots is proposed to facilitate the charge transfer and improve the photocatalytic activity. In terms of the experimental results of N 2 adsorption/desorption, zeta potential and photoluminescence emission spectra, a possible mechanism of MB removal is discussed. The InVO 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 composite with a synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation increases the active adsorption sites and promotes the separation of photogenerated electron and holes, thereby improving the MB removal performance.

The widespread application of Rhodamine B (RhB) poses a serious threat to the aquatic environment. ZnFe2O4, as a catalyst material, can effectively activate persulfate (PMS) and respond to visible light, thus effectively degrading RhB with the joint assistance of sunlight and PMS. This study recovered Fe2O3from high-iron coal gangue through an activating–acid leaching–extracting–back-extracting process and synthesized ZnFe2O4catalysts (CG-ZFO) using coal gangue back-extraction liquid as the Fe source by a hydrothermal method and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal method. The characterization results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) showed that the CG-ZFO has a pure crystal phase, and the addition of CTAB can effectively improve the photoelectric performance of the catalyst. The synthesized CG-ZFO can produce a significant synergistic effect with simulated sunlight (SS) and PMS, and the constructed SS/CG-ZFO/PMS system had a good degradation effect on RhB. Based on the conclusions of free radical-quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the main active species in the SS/CG-ZFO/PMS system was identified as1O2, and the degradation mechanism of RhB was elucidated. CG-ZFO prepared from coal gangue holds promising potential for application in the remediation of organic dye wastewater, and this study also provides a new approach for the resource regeneration of high-iron coal gangue.

Dual Z-scheme heterojunction with highly separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers and outstanding redox capability has received considerable attention and hold great promise for environmental remediation. Herein, magnetic dual Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag 2 CO 3 heterojunction was successfully constructed, and applied as a dual-function photocatalyst for tetracycline (TC) degradation and bacterial inactivation. The optimized g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag 2 CO 3 heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic capacity for TC degradation with a rate constant of 0.0154 min −1 , which is 2.73, 3.08, and 2.92 times higher compared to that of the g-C 3 N 4 , ZnFe 2 O 4 , and g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 , respectively. Impressively, the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag 2 CO 3 -1.25 heterojunction displayed satisfying activity within a wider range of pH (3.0–9.0), TC concentration (5–25 mg L −1 ), and with the addition of various anions including Cl - , HCO 3 - , SO 4 2- , and NO 3 - . Meanwhile, 6.5-log of Escherichia coli cells could also be inactivated by g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag 2 CO 3 -1.25 heterojunction under visible light. Mechanism exploration based on trapping experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) indicated that the improved photocatalytic performance resulted from the synergetic effect of semiconductors and constructed dual Z-scheme heterojunction, which significantly promotes charge separation rate and endows strong redox capacity. As expected, the toxicity of TC degradation intermediates was reduced according to the Toxicity estimation analysis based on a quantitative structure activity relationships (QSAR) method. Further, the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag 2 CO 3 heterojunction also demonstrated magnetic separation property and satisfactory photocatalytic stability even after 4 cycles. This work offers a new perspective on constructing novel magnetic dual Z-scheme heterojunction with dual-function photocatalytic properties and is of significance for water remediation.

Arsenic(III) poisoning may lead to neurological disorders, heart diseases or carcinogenic effects due to long-term exposure. The presence of arsenic in drinking water is a widespread problem and presents an important analytical challenge. Among the methods for As(III) monitoring, electrochemical analysis offers fast response, low detection limits and high sensitivity. Here we report a novel system, which achieves exceptional performance without use of expensive noble metals by exploiting a metal oxide rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs). Novel OV-rich spinel ZnFe2O4 microspheres (ZF-Ms) were synthesized and applied to electrochemical monitoring of As(III) in underground drinking water by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) in acetate buffer (pH 6.0). To boost sensing capability, the surface of ZF-Ms was further wrapped with carbon and nitrogen rich nanodots (CNs) and modified with benzimidazolium-1-acetate ionic liquid (IL). The designed CN-wrapped IL-modified ZF-Ms (CN@ZF-Ms-IL) sensor offered an ultra-low detection limit of 0.0006 ppb (based on the 3σ method), high sensitivity (41.08 μA ppb−1) and a wide linear range (∼1–60 ppb) including the World Health Organization (WHO)'s desirable range (10 ppb). To the best of our knowledge, the system outperforms most alternatives based on noble metal electrodes and almost all those based on the reported metal-free electrochemical sensors. A possible sensing mechanism is proposed and supported with experimental evidence. Additionally, the system has been successfully applied to monitor arsenic-contaminated real ground drinking water collected from a flood-affected area, Muzaffargarh, Punjab, Pakistan.

In this study, a novel ternary ZnO-based nanorod arrays (NRAs) photoanode is designed and constructed for the first time for unassisted solar-light-driven water splitting to generate H 2 using photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell. The ternary heterojunction photoanode is constructed by modifying ZnO NRAs with ZnFe 2 O 4 nanosheets (NSs) and CdS nanoparticles (NPs), successively. The band alignment study demonstrates that ZnFe 2 O 4 NSs as an interfacial modification layer not only enlarge the contact area with ZnO and CdS respectively to build a stair-step band alignment of conduction band levels for the efficient transport of electrons but also make the valence band of ZnFe 2 O 4 to be as the hole accumulation site in the ternary heterojunction. The electrochemical and photoluminescence measurements demonstrate the efficient separation of the carriers. Consequently, the ternary ZnO-based NRAs photoanode achieves a significant H 2 generation rate of 92.9 μmol/h, 6.23 and 2.97 times of ZnO NRAs and ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 NRAs/NSs photoanodes, respectively.

A novel microfluidic paper-based colorimetric sensor for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA) was developed based on the intrinsic peroxidase activity of ZnFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (ZnFe 2 O 4 MNPs) and the adsorption capacity of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) membranes. In the process, ZnFe 2 O 4 MNPs and cellulose fibers in paper were wrapped by MIP membranes (ZnFe 2 O 4 @MIP membranes) successfully. Novel MIP membranes for the recognition of BPA were prepared in polar solvent using acrylamide as the functional monomer and BPA as the template by bulk polymerization, which resulted in a new type of BPA imprinted polymer membranes. Adsorption isotherms model of MIP membranes was employed to describe the isotherms, and maximum adsorption capacity was evaluated. In the presence of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), the as-prepared ZnFe 2 O 4 MNPs peroxidase mimetics was used to catalyze chromogenic reactions and showed the color with respective intensity. Under optimized conditions, the grey intensity was found to be proportional to the BPA concentrations in the range of 10 nM–1000 nM (R 2 = 0.9945) with a detection limit of 6.18 nM. With the advantages of highly reproducible response, good selectivity and excellent regeneration, the colorimetric sensor holds great potential for portable detection of targets in environmental monitoring, security inspection and complicated matrices.

The Photo-Fenton-like reaction offers a novel avenue for the efficient and thorough mineralization of emerging pollutants while is constrained by metal ion leaching and a declination in catalytic performance. This study presented the development of a ZnFe 2 O 4 /NBGA (named as ZFO/NBGA) catalytic system including strategically established Fe-X-C (X = N, B) links and a three-dimensional hierarchical architecture. The Fe-X-C bond functions as a conduit to modulate the charge environment at active sites, and the three-dimensional nitrogen and boron-doped graphene aerogel (noted as NBGA) accelerates charge and ion transfer. Experimental findings demonstrated that the ZFO/NBGA catalytic system achieved 99.5% TC removal activity for PDS activation under visible light irradiation within 50 min. The reaction rate constant (k) reached 9.9 × 10 −2 min −1 , which is 6.6 times higher than that of pure ZnFe 2 O 4 . Additionally, the anti-interference ability in complex water environments was validated. Crucially, the catalyst exhibited exceptional stability and economic sustainability, maintaining 79.89% degradation efficiency after 6 consecutive cycles with negligible metal leaching (Zn < 1.0 mg/L, Fe < 0.3 mg/L). The primary active species were • O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 . LSCM evaluated the degradation pathways of contaminants, and the toxicity of the resultant chemicals were examined. DFT calculations elucidated that improved performance resulted from directional electron transport, which prolonged carriers life-time, and the d -band center of ZFO/NBGA, situated closer to the Fermi level, optimized the adsorption and desorption of intermediates. This work may offer novel insights into the mechanisms of metal-based carbon catalysts for the efficient remediation of emerging pollutants, which is essential for the establishment of ecologically sustainable catalytic approaches.

Solid waste resource utilization and the treatment of wastewater are two important aspects in environmental protection. Here, biochar (BC) derived from municipal sewage sludge has been combined with ZnFe2O4 to form the photocatalyst ZnFe2O4/biochar (ZnFe/BC), and it was used to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible (Vis) light irradiation in an internal loop-airlift reactor (ALR). The surface morphology and structure of ZnFe/BC have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy equipped with an attachment for energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). ZnFe/BC displays outstanding photocatalytic performance and reusability. After four reuse cycles of ZnFe/BC in the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS system, the SDZ degradation rate and efficiency still reached 0.082 min−1 and 99.05%, respectively. Reactive species in this system included free radicals SO4˙−, ˙OH, and ˙O2−, as well as non-radicals 1O2, e−, and h+, as established from the results of chemical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses. Moreover, a mechanism of action of the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS system for SDZ degradation was proposed. The acute toxicity of the reaction solution towards Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 spp. in the Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS process increased during the first 40 min and then decreased, illustrating that Vis/ZnFe/BC/PMS provided an effective and safe method for the removal of SDZ.

In this work, direct Z-Scheme photocatalyst (ZnFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 ) was employed to purify Cr(VI) and As(III) in wastewater. Results showed that Cr(VI) and As(III) was completely removed in a wide pH range of 3–7 under visible light irradiation. During photo reaction, oxalate enhanced the generation of Fe(II) and CO 2 − , which were beneficial for formation of OH and O 2 − . In photocatalytic system, Fe(II), photogenerated electron, as well as CO 2 − contributed to Cr(VI) reduction, OH and O 2 − were responsible for treatment of As(III). Moreover, ZnFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 was easily recycled by magnetic separation, and presented an excellent reuse ability in treatment of Cr(VI) and As(III).
