Abstract Plant fiber isolated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are the materials with excellent mechanical properties. However, application of CNFs in polymer reinforcement is normally unsatisfactory due to its intertwined size distribution. Efforts to produce uniform sized CNFs have yet to be studied. In present work, spiral microchannel was used to fractionate CNFs based on the balance between inertial lift force (F L ) and Dean drag force (F D ) exerted on CNFs. The results showed that the smaller length of CNFs equilibrated near the inner microchannel while the larger length of CNFs occupied the equilibrium position away from the inner wall. With the increase of flowrates from 50 to 220 μL/min, fractionation efficiency between inner and middle outlet (E IM ) of spiral microchannel A with larger radius curvature (R) from 5 to 15 mm increased from 0 to 75.4%. However, stronger Dean flow attributing to decrease of R (3 mm to 10 mm) of single spiral microchannel B enabled satisfactory fractionation efficiency of 70.9% at flowrate of 90 μL/min. Moreover, the fractionation efficiency of double spiral microchannel with twice as length as microchannel A and three times as length as microchannel B was lower than that of single spiral microchannel at flowrate lower than 90 μL/min. Furthermore, this study exhibited a versatile and simple method for CNFs fractionation with high fractionation efficiency. Graphic abstract

Abstract With the aim of developing self-disinfecting materials to prevent pathogen transmission from surfaces to new hosts, here we report a simple and eco-friendly way to prepare photodynamic bacterial cellulose (BC) onto which the naturally-occurring photosensitizer hypocrellin (Hc) has been covalently appended. The resultant hypocrellin-grafted BC membrane (Hc-BC) was characterized by both physical (SEM, TGA, XRD) and spectroscopic (IR, diffuse reflectance UV–visible) methods, and the photosensitizer loading was found to be 155 nmol Hc/mg membrane. Indirect cytotoxicity tests employing mouse skin fibroblast (L929) cells showed no changes in cell viability, demonstrating that the Hc-BC membrane lacked any leachable components (e.g., unreacted coupling agent or hypocrellin) that could be cytotoxic to mammalian cells. The photodynamic antibacterial activity of Hc-BC was evaluated against gram-positive S. aureus (ATCC-6538) and gram-negative E. coli strain 8099. Our results demonstrated a 99.5 + % (2.7 log units) reduction in S. aureus upon illumination (Xe lamp, 65 ± 5 mW/cm 2 , 420–780 nm; 30 min), however, no statistically significant inactivation of E. coli was observed. Potentiation with potassium iodide was found to increase the antibacterial efficacy of Hc-BC against S. aureus to 99.997% (4.8 log units) at 10 mM KI, while E. coli was inactivated by 99.1% (2 log units) at 100 mM KI, with the increase in inactivation being attributable to short-lived reactive iodide radicals that are the major biocidal agents in the potentiation of Hc-BC by KI. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that hypocrellin-grafted bacterial cellulose is a sustainable material from which potent photodynamic antibacterial materials may be derived. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are a type of natural nanomaterials extracted from plants and animals that have expanding applications in numerous areas benefiting from their inherent properties of renewability, biodegradability, and sustainability. For energy consumption reduction, CNFs were extracted from raw jute fibers, which were not pretreated in a hot alkali or acid solution, by TEMPO-mediated oxidation. Synchrotron radiation wide-angle scattering was performed to realize the crystallization of the CNF crystallites; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the changes in chemical groups and visualized morphology of CNFs. The simplified preparation and shortened cycle should further help the study of the structure–function relationship of jute CNFs subjected to chemical modification.

Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle-infiltrated chromatography paper is prepared using a low-cost blending method. Upon characterizing the basic material properties of the Fe 3 O 4 /paper nanocomposite , beam-, accordion- and star-shaped actuators are constructed using the nanocomposite and the corresponding actuation performance is investigated experimentally. The beam-shaped actuator exhibits a reversible flexural deformation due to low magnetic hysteresis loop of the Fe 3 O 4 /paper nanocomposite, maintaining a stable response after 100 cycles. The accordion-shaped actuator can reach a maximum strain of 100% while the star-shaped actuator can capture a spitball twice heavier than itself.

As a material derived from cellulose, which is abundant in nature, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has been used as an ingredient to synthesize hydrogels for various applications. The introduction of self-healing properties in CMC hydrogels will expand their service life and scope of application. We report a facile way to fabricate CMC hydrogels with self-healing behaviour. The self-healing CMC hydrogel is achieved by acidifying the CMC paste in citric acid solution. The CMC hydrogel can autonomously self-heal without any external stimulus under ambient temperature, and the healed hydrogels can bear the stretching as demonstrated by macroscopic observation. The hydrogel with ∼2.5 MPa compressive strength exhibits ∼80% of healing efficiency. With these superior properties, the developed CMC hydrogel holds great potential for applications in biomedical and industry fields.

The production of nanocellulose with controlled structure from plant sources with easy availability and good sustainability is very important in science and engineering. In this work, the isolation of cellulose from bamboo and the effects of the hydrolysis of different acids on the morphology, structure, and properties of the resultant cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals were investigated. Bamboo cellulose (PHC) was first isolated from raw bamboo powder by alkali and consecutive bleaching treatments. Cellulose crystallites were then prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of PHC in acid solutions. The samples were characterized by using thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, laser particle size analyzer, Scanning electron microscopy, and Transmission electron microscopy. Cellulose nanocrystals prepared from the hydrolysis of the isolated bamboo cellulose in the sulfate acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, or acetic acid solution had the length of 3–200 nm, 20–85 nm, 20–40 nm, and 6.5–20 nm, respectively. Nanocrystals made by the uses of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid possessed higher crystallinity and lower thermal stability than those by the uses of hydrochloric acid and a mixture of acetic acid and nitric acid. Results suggested the type of acids significantly influenced the structure, morphology, and thermal stability of cellulose crystallites. The anions in the acid solution also contributed to those differences because they affected the swelling of cellulose chains and breakage of hydrogen bonds in cellulose. The findings indicate that a judicious choice of pretreatment of the cellulose and its moieties can be used for the production of different cellulose nanocrystals. © 2014 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Water responsive SiO 2 /cellulose nanocomposite hydrogels and films were constructed, for the first time, by dispersing SiO 2 nanoparticles into cellulose solution in LiOH/urea solvent, and then by crosslinking with epichlorohydrin or regeneration in coagulation bath, respectively. The cellulose nanocomposite materials were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, dynamic rheology, wide angle X-ray diffraction and mechanical test. The SiO 2 /cellulose nanocomposites at wet state or in water displayed unique behaviors, showing higher light transmittance than those before contacting with water. The results revealed that strong hydrogen-bonding interaction among water, cellulose and SiO 2 led the good dispersion of SiO 2 nanoparticles in the cellulose matrix. The incorporation of SiO 2 nanoparticles improved the transmittance and mechanical strength of the cellulose hydrogels, and also enhanced the mechanical strength of the films. Especially, the cellulose/SiO 2 nanocomposite films were milky at dry state, and changed to transparent after being soaked in water, different from the cellulose film without the SiO 2 nanoparticles. In our findings, SiO 2 and cellulose with water could form strong hydrogen bonding to create a homogenous network structure. The cellulose/SiO 2 composite as a smart material exhibited moisture and solvent responsiveness, showing potential applications in moisture detection.

A flexible composite paper of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and cellulose fiber (CF) were fabricated by traditional paper-making method. Then, the MWCNT/CF papers were carbonized at high temperature in vacuum to remove organic component. The carbonized MWCNT/CF (MWCNT/CCF) papers are consisted of MWCNT and carbon fiber. The papers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and four-point probe resistance meter. The electrochemical performances of the supercapacitors were tested by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge >with 1 moL/L LiPF 6 as electrolyte. The MWCNT/CCF electrode yielded a specific capacitance of 156F/g at a current density of 50 mA/g by galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement, which is 1.29 times higher than MWCNT/CF electrode of 68F/g. The MWCNT/CCF electrodes also displayed an excellent specific capacitance retention of 84% after 2000 continuous charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 400 mA/g. The increase of specific capacitance can be attributed to enhanced electrical conductivity of MWCNT/CCF papers and improved contact interface between electrolyte and electrodes.

Nature resource-derived hydrogels with the properties of both self-healing and photoluminescence are urgent needed to develop. Herein, we demonstrate that carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based hydrogels can be engineered to exhibit the integrate capabilities of self-healing, photoluminescence and stretchability by a facile, green and economic approach. The CMC-based hydrogels present blue-green color under ultraviolet light, and self-heal in ambient temperature without any external stimulus with 95% healing efficiency. Moreover, the healed hydrogel can be stretched nearly 2.5 times of their original length. The stretchable self-healing and photoluminescent CMC-based hydrogels can adhere to glass, plastic and soft tissues. The vessel sealant for preventing the leakage of aqueous solution and prototype of mucoadhesive for stomach perforations are demonstrated. With these novel properties, the easy-to-synthesize, mass production, multifunctional smart CMC-based hydrogels hold great potential for applications in biomedical and engineering fields.

In this paper, we report a facile, rapid, and green strategy for the synthesis of cellulose/hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocomposites using an inorganic phosphorus source (sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate (NaH2PO4·2H2O)), or organic phosphorus sources (adenosine 5′-triphosphate disodium salt (ATP), creatine phosphate disodium salt tetrahydrate (CP), or D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate trisodium salt octahydrate (FBP)) through the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The effects of the phosphorus sources, heating time, and heating temperature on the phase, size, and morphology of the products were systematically investigated. The experimental results revealed that the phosphate sources played a critical role on the phase, size, and morphology of the minerals in the nanocomposites. For example, the pure HA was obtained by using NaH2PO4·2H2O as phosphorus source, while all the ATP, CP, and FBP led to the byproduct, calcite. The HA nanostructures with various morphologies (including nanorods, pseudo-cubic, pseudo-spherical, and nano-spherical particles) were obtained by varying the phosphorus sources or adjusting the reaction parameters. In addition, this strategy is surfactant-free, avoiding the post-treatment procedure and cost for the surfactant removal from the product. We believe that this work can be a guidance for the green synthesis of cellulose/HA nanocomposites in the future.Keywords:cellulose;hydroxyapatite;nanocomposites;microwave-assisted hydrothermal

Effectively regulating heat flow between buildings and their environment, through the use of infrared property-structural materials that passively regulate radiative heat dissipation, not only enhances thermal comfort but also offers a potentially cost-effective solution for energy conservation and countering global warming. However, fulfilling the demand for aesthetic appearance and effective display in real-life situations while maintaining infrared properties remains a significant impediment to the commercialization of structural materials. In this work, we utilized ion-dyed cellulose as the base material and employed gel-assisted and thermal pressing methods to produce ion-dyed cooling cellulose bulk. Experimental results demonstrate its bending strength reaching 111 MPa, and impact toughness reaching 79.8 kJ m −2 . While offering a wide range of colors, it exhibits excellent radiative cooling performance. During days with strong solar radiation, three different colors of ion-dyed cooling cellulose bulk achieve temperature reductions of 2.2–3.9 °C. Moreover, the fabrication process is simple, cost-effective, and conducive to industrialization. This study provides a practical and theoretical foundation for the development and design of colored wood-based radiative cooling materials.

Although carbon aerogels derived from naturally occurring materials have been developed extensively, a reasonable synthetic approach using cellulose-resource remains unclear. Here, we report a strategy to prepare carbon aerogels originated from cellulose position-selectively oxidized by TEMPO-oxidized process. Contrary to non-TEMPO-oxidized cellulose-derived carbon aerogels (NCCA) with relative loose structure, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose-derived carbon aerogels (TCCA) with tight fibrillar-continuous network are monitored, suggesting the importance of TEMPO-oxidized modification towards creating the architecture of subsequently produced carbon aerogels. TCCA endows a higher BET area despite owning slightly dense bulk density comparing with that of NCCA. The structural texture of TCCA could be maintained in a way in comparison to TEMPO-oxidized cellulose-derived aerogel, due to the integration and aggregation effect by losing the electric double layer repulsion via ionization of the surface carboxyl groups. FTIR and XPS analyses signify the evidence of non-functionalized carbon-skeleton network formation in terms of TCCA. Further, the mechanism concerning the creation of carbon aerogels is also established. These findings not only provide new insights into the production of carbon aerogels but also open up a new opportunity in the field of functional carbon materials.
