Emerging underwater exploration suggests the need for subaqueous E-textiles. Large-deformation signal feedback for swimming motions and body thermal protection against hypothermia are urgently desirable. Here, underwater-usable E-textiles with remarkable sensing and electrothermal behaviors are introduced, which are composed of stretchable core-sheath fibers based on liquid metal fabricated via a coaxial wet-spinning strategy. The fibers possess outstanding specific resistance (∼0.05 Ω·cm −1 ) and robust sensing detection range for both strain (∼600% elongation) and pressure (∼30 MPa), as well as a quick response time (30 ms). Meanwhile, the fabricated E-textiles present excellent low-power-driving electrothermal performance (1.5 W, ∼50 °C) even at underwater conditions. Remarkably, the conducting liquid metal circuit can be well reversed even after being entirely broken out of the sensing ranges. For proof of concept, an underwater glove integrating motion sensing, visual danger warning and hypothermia prevention is exhibited, which has potential for application in underwater exploration.

Chemotherapy is a major cancer treatment that uses antitumor drugs to kill fast-growing cancer cells. Many kinds of drug carriers have been developed to deliver and achieve controlled release of small-molecule therapeutic agents. However, many therapeutic agent carriers need complex preparation process. The natural polypeptides may serve as proper drug carriers. More specifically, polymyxin E (PE) is a kind of natural antibiotic lipopeptides. It is commonly used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Herein, we present a facile method to prepare DOX-loaded polymyxin E micelles (PE-DOX micelles) to enhance the therapeutic effect of anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). The hydrodynamic sizes and zeta potential of the prepared nanomedicine (PE-DOX micelles) were 142.0 nm and 6.47 mV, respectively. The release of DOX from PE-DOX micelles was faster at pH 5.5 than that at pH 7.4. Furthermore, PE exhibited negligible cytotoxicity to A549 cells and HeLa cells within 50 μg/mL, while PE-DOX micelles caused higher cytotoxicity than that of free DOX. Moreover, the intravenously injected PE-DOX micelles showed good biocompatibility and obvious antitumor effect after 14 days’ treatment in vivo. The PE-DOX micelles have great potential to be used as anticancer agent in the future.

Electronic skin (E-skin) with multimodal sensing ability demonstrates huge prospects in object classification by intelligent robots. However, realizing the object classification capability of E-skin faces severe challenges in multiple types of output signals. Herein, a hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin based on all resistive output signals is developed for accurate object classification, which consists of laser-induced graphene/silicone rubber (LIG/SR) pressure sensing layer and NiO temperature sensing layer. The highly conductive LIG is employed as pressure-sensitive material as well as the interdigital electrode. Benefiting from high conductivity of LIG, pressure perception exhibits an excellent sensitivity of −34.15 kPa −1 . Meanwhile, a high temperature coefficient of resistance of −3.84%°C −1 is obtained in the range of 24–40 °C. More importantly, based on only electrical resistance as the output signal, the bimodal sensing E-skin with negligible crosstalk can simultaneously achieve pressure and temperature perception. Furthermore, a smart glove based on this E-skin enables classifying various objects with different shapes, sizes, and surface temperatures, which achieves over 92% accuracy under assistance of deep learning. Consequently, the hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin demonstrates potential application in human-machine interfaces, intelligent robots, and smart prosthetics.

Antimony is pervasive environmental toxic substance, and numerous genes encoding mechanisms to resist, transform and extrude the toxic metalloid antimony have been discovered in various microorganisms. Here we identified a major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporter, AntB, on the chromosome of the arsenite-oxidizing bacterium Ensifer adhaerens E-60 that confers resistance to Sb(III) and Sb(V). The antB gene is adjacent to gene encoding a LysR family transcriptional regulator termed LysR ars , which is an As(III)/Sb(III)-responsive transcriptional repressor that is predicted to control expression of antB . Similar antB and lysR ars genes are found in related arsenic-resistant bacteria, especially strains of Ensifer adhaerens , and the lysR ars gene adjacent to antB encodes a member of a divergent subgroup of putative LysR-type regulators. Closely related AntB and LysR ars orthologs contain three conserved cysteine residues, which are Cys17, Cys99, and Cys350 in AntB and Cys81, Cys289 and Cys294 in LysR ars , respectively. Expression of antB is induced by As(III), Sb(III), Sb(V) and Rox(III) (4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl arsenite). Heterologous expression of antB in E. coli AW3110 (Δ ars ) conferred resistance to Sb(III) and Sb(V) and reduced the intracellular concentration of Sb(III). The discovery of the Sb(III) efflux transporter AntB enriches our knowledge of the role of the efflux transporter in the antimony biogeochemical cycle .

The present study evaluated inactivation efficiency of a sonophotocatalytic process using ZnO nanofluids including ultrasonic parameters such as power density, frequency and time. The result showed that inactivation efficiency was increased by 20% when ultrasonic irradiation was combined with photocatalytic process in the presence of natural light. Comparison of inactivation efficiency in photocatalytic, ultrasonic and sonocatalytic processes using Escherichia coli as a model bacteria identified that inactivation efficiencies are shown in the following order: ultrasonic irradiation < sonocatalysis < photocatalysis < sonophotocatalysis. Furthermore, inactivation mechanism of sonophotocatalysis was proposed. Studies of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) release evaluation revealed that ROS play a key role in bacterial inactivation rather than Zn 2+ . Permeability of outer membrane (OM) and inner membrane (IM) of E. coli bacterial cells were studied and exhibited that sonophotocatalysis increased the permeability of OM and IM significantly. The enhanced bacterial inactivation effect in sonophotocatalytic process contributed to acoustic cavitation, sonocatalysis of ZnO and sonoporation phenomenon.

Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) beads imprinted with vitamin E (V E ) were synthesized via a two-step swelling polymerization method, using methacrylic acid (MAA) and other functional monomers together with polystyrene (PS) microspheres as the substrate. In initial trials, different functional monomers were assessed, along with a variety of solvents and imprinting ratios. The MIP MAA sample exhibited the highest performance and was characterized and also assessed with regard to V E adsorption under various experimental conditions. This material exhibited reasonably good sphericity, porosity and stability, along with an excellent adsorption capacity of 46 mg/g. This was much higher than the value for the corresponding non-imprinted polymer made with the same monomer, and 20% higher than that for an acrylamide-based MIP synthesized using a precipitation polymerization method. The core-shell structured MIP MAA also demonstrated fast adsorption kinetics, a low pressure drop and good reusability in fixed bed experiments. The V E adsorption equilibrium, selectivity, kinetics, thermodynamics and regeneration capacity of this material were also examined and are reported herein.

DNA damage can occur naturally or through environmental factors, leading to mutations in DNA replication and genomic instability in cells. Normally, natural d-nucleotides were selected by DNA polymerases. The template l-thymidine (l-T) has been shown to be bypassed by several types of DNA polymerases. However, DNA replication fidelity of nucleotide incorporation opposite l-thymidine in vivo remains unknown. Here, we constructed plasmids containing a restriction enzyme (PstI) recognition site in which the l-T lesion was site-specifically located within the PstI recognition sequence (CTGCAG). Further, we assessed the efficiencies of nucleotide incorporation opposite the l-T site and l-T lesion bypass replication in vitro and in vivo. We found that recombinants containing the l-T lesion site inhibited DNA replication. In addition, A was incorporated opposite the l-T lesion by routine PCR assay, whereas preference for nucleotide incorporation opposite the l-T site was A (13%), T (22%), C (46%), and G (19%), and no nucleotide insertion and deletions were detected in E. coli cells. In particular, a novel restriction enzyme-mediated method for detection of the mutagenic properties of DNA lesion was established, which allows us to readily detect restriction–digestion of the l-T-bearing plasmids. The study provided significant insight into how mirror-image nucleosides perturb the fidelity of DNA replication in vivo and whether they elicit mutagenic effects, which may help to understand both how DNA damage interferes with the flow of genetic information during DNA replication and development of diseases caused by gene mutation.

Inducing mitochondrial malfunction is an appealing strategy to overcome tumor multidrug resistance (MDR). Reported here a versatile mitochondrial-damaging molecule, vitamin E succinate (VES), is creatively utilized to assist MDR reversal of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) via a nanovesicle platform self-assembled from amphiphilic polyphosphazenes containing pH-sensitive 1H-benzo-[d]imidazol-2-yl) methanamine (BIMA) groups. Driven by multiple non-covalent interactions, VES is fully introduced into the hydrophobic membrane of DOX·HCl-loaded nanovesicles with loading content of 23.5%. The incorporated VES also offers robust anti-leakage property toward DOX·HCl under normal physiological conditions. More importantly, upon release within acidic tumor cells, VES can target mitochondria and result in various dysfunctions including excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (Δ Ψ m ) loss, and inhibited adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, which contribute to cell apoptosis and insufficient energy supply for drug efflux pumps . Consequently, the killing-effect of DOX·HCl is significantly enhanced toward drug resistant cancer cells at the optimal mass ratio of DOX·HCl to VES. Further in vivo antitumor investigation on nude mice bearing xenograft drug-resistant human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562/ADR tumors verifies the extremely enhanced anti-tumor efficacy of the dual drug-loaded nanovesicle with the tumor inhibition rate (TIR) of 82.38%. Collectively, this study provides a s safe, facile and promising strategy for both precise drug delivery and MDR eradication to improve cancer therapy.

The development of electronic skin is the key to the realization of artificial intelligence that immediate contacts with humans, as well as biomedical applications . To mimic the tactile sensing properties of natural skin, large ultrathin arrays of pixel high-performance pressure sensors on a flexible and stretchable substrate are required. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, flexible multimodal sensing capability of e-skin sensor based on polyaniline hollow nanospheres composite films (PANI-HNSCF). Hollow structure endows the thin films with structure-derived elasticity and a low effective elastic modulus of 0.213 MPa. The effective amplification and transformation of various external stimuli to independent electrical signals enables the precise and continuous sensing of pressure and temperature with a high pressure sensitivity of 31.6 kPa −1 and an accurate temperature resolution of 0.08 °C −1 . Importantly, the single sensing unit can be easily integrated sensor arrays with excellent sensing performance. Our work provided the technological verify between structure of materials and properties of device and make hollow materials possess promising application in e-skin and health-monitoring elements.

Processed Buddha's hand fruit (PBHF) is a widely consumed food, but its flavor profile and functional mechanisms remain understudied. In this study, human sensory evaluation (n = 120), E-tongue, E-nose, microbiomics, and metabolomics were integrated to comprehensively analyze PBHF's flavor characteristics and elucidate its dietary improvement mechanisms. Human sensory evaluation identified PBHF as predominantly sweet and sour with a soft texture, accompanied by subtle notes of saltiness, pomelo peel, liquorice, refreshment, hawthorn, fragrant aroma, and cinnamon. These findings were corroborated by E-tongue analysis, which confirmed sweetness and sourness as the primary tastes. E-nose detection revealed 36 aroma components, including limonene as the key contributor to the pomelo peel flavor. In animal studies, PBHF regulated dietary patterns in mice, significantly reducing weight gain and enhancing gastrointestinal motility. Importantly, it showed no adverse effects on organ indices (spleen, kidney, liver, or thymus). Microbiomics analysis indicated that PBHF increased the abundance of digestive bacteria such as Limosilactobacillus reuteri , Lacticaseibacillus johnsonii , and Ligilactobacillus murinus . Metabolomics profiling further demonstrated that PBHF mitigated weight gain by upregulating metabolic pathways such as lipolysis in adipocytes, fatty acid degradation, and glycerolipid metabolism. By synergizing large-scale human sensory evaluation, electronic sensory evaluation, microbiomics, and metabolomics, this study systematically deciphered PBHF's flavor attributes and mechanistic roles in promoting digestion and metabolic health. These findings provide robust scientific evidence for PBHF's potential applications in functional food development.

Honeysuckle samples from various plots in Pingyi County, Linyi City were selected and analyzed by integrating electronic tongue (E-tongue), electronic nose (E-nose), HS-SPME-GC-MS, and GC-IMS technologies with multivariate statistical analysis methods, a systematic analysis of the flavor characteristics and plot differentiation patterns of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was conducted in the study. The results indicated that the E-tongue provided distinct sensor response patterns that correlated with taste attributes such as sweetness and bitterness, effectively discriminating samples from different plots. E-nose analysis further showed that aroma-related response intensities exhibited significant plot-based variation. Through HS-SPME-GC-MS and GC-IMS techniques, a total of 203 volatile components were identified. Based on HS-SPME-GC-MS data, using VIP > 1 and OAV ≥ 1 as screening criteria, seven key volatile markers were determined. From the GC-IMS data, 24 characteristic compounds were screened out using the criterion of VIP > 1, with aldehydes comprising the highest proportion. Furthermore, the random forest (RF) algorithm was employed to integrate these two sets of data. Monte Carlo cross-validation showed that the model accuracy reached 1.0, successfully identifying 15 key volatile compounds. This study provided a theoretical foundation and data support for optimizing the quality evaluation system of honeysuckle and innovating origin traceability technology through multi-dimensional flavor analysis and key marker screening.

Strategies for preventing the growth of mycotoxigenic fungi in agricultural commodities need to be identified. In this study, sorbaldehyde and ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal, two natural aldehydes as derivatives of the common food preservative sorbic acid, were investigated for their antifungal efficacy as fumigants against Aspergillus flavus in stored peanut seeds. In vitro assays demonstrated that both sorbaldehyde and ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal exhibited stronger inhibitory effects on A. flavus than sorbic acid. Moreover, the vapor phase of these two aldehydes were much more effective than direct contact on A. flavus growth. ( E , E )-2,4-Heptadienal showed higher fumigant activity than sorbaldehyde, with 50% effective concentration (EC 50 ) values of 1.5 and 2.6 mg/l air, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 16 and 8 mg/l air, respectively. Furthermore, fumigation with sorbaldehyde or ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal could significantly reduce and delay A. flavus growth in stored peanut seeds, and the infection was completely inhibited by 100 mg/l air sorbaldehyde or 75 mg/l air ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal. These results revealed that ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal, a natural food flavour with better safety than sorbaldehyde, has high potential as an antifungal fumigant for protecting peanut seeds from contamination of A. flavus during storage.
