Eugenol Alleviates Cerebral Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury in Mice by Promoting the Phagocytosis of Microglia via Up-Regulating Tripartite Motif Protein 59

Mengtian Pan,Xiang Li,Xinjuan Tian,Lele Zixin Yang,Weirong Fang

Ischemic stroke (IS) is one of the most sinister diseases and the second leading cause of death in the world. Eugenol (EUG) is a natural and biologically active component that can be extracted from various plants. Studies have found that EUG can alleviate middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO/R) injury in mice, but the specific mechanism remains vague. Tripartite motif protein 59 (TRIM59) is a member of TRIM protein family, a group of E3 ubiquitin ligases. In this article, we conducted both in vivo and in vitro experiments to determine the effect of EUG on ischemia–reperfusion injury and to explore the underlying mechanisms by manipulating the expression of TRIM59. Results showed that EUG alleviates acute injury and promotes functional repair of mouse IS by enhancing the phagocytosis of microglia through up-regulating the TRIM59, activating the STAT3 pathway and promoting the expression of CD11b.

Engineered design of self-cleaning and antifouling organosilicon/eugenol-based zinc acrylate resin composite coating by forming semi-interpenetrating polymer networks

Zheng Wang,Shuhong Nie,Enhui He,Guanglei Song,Xiaohui Jiang,Xia Li,Xuefeng Yan,Liangmin Yu

The practical application of low surface energy organosilicon in marine antifouling is significantly limited due to its poor ability to eliminate biofoulings. Herein, combining organosilicon with zinc acrylate resin containing eugenol group (EAM-Zn) by means of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (SIPNs), an innovative self-cleaning and antifouling composite coating was developed (named E x Si y ), which integrates low surface energy and self-polishing. After 35 days of immersion in seawater, the hydrophobic organosilicon of E 1 Si 3 coating impedes the penetration of water molecules into the interior of the coating, resulting in the weight loss rate of EAM-Zn being reduced from 24.99 % to 1.92 %. The surface energy of the E x Si y coating after 7 days of immersion in seawater is decreased to 20 m J/m 2 , achieving self-cleaning under the action of flowing water shear. Antifouling performance tests show that the E 1 Si 1 coating increases the inhibition rate of the original silicone against Escherichia coli from 48.95 % to 77.5 %. The adhesion area of diatoms on the surface of the E x Si y coating is only 2 %, and the removal strength of pseudobarnacles is merely 0.2 MPa. Most significantly, the composite coating demonstrates a remarkable antifouling effect in the Yellow Sea waters of Qingdao. Overall, this research presents a preparation method for enhancing the antifouling performance of organosilicon antifouling coatings, promoting the development of multifunctional and environmentally-friendly marine antifouling coatings.

A nanoscale γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework loaded with eugenol (CMFE) for controlling F. graminearum on the wheat during harvest time

Luzhou Cai,Ling Li,Dong Li,Yanping Wu,Jinrong Bai,Kai Zhong,Hong Gao

The loss of grains in the production chain caused huge waste worldwide, and the control of plant pathogenic fungi during harvest time is a critical solution to mitigate the damage. Eugenol, an important component of clove oil ( Syzygium aromaticum L.), has antioxidant, antifungal, and other activities. In this study, the unstable eugenol was incorporated into the nanoscale γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF), a cubic porous structure synthesized by vapor diffusion method. The investigation of morphologies, functional groups, crystalline structures and weight losing behaviors demonstrated the inclusion complex prepared from γ-CD-MOF and eugenol (CMFE). Compared with the γ-CD loaded with eugenol (CE), CMFE exhibited an improved loading rate with 4.06 % ( w/w ). And CMFE enhanced the stability of its inner eugenol against degradation by light and air. Moreover, the CMFE demonstrated a significant anti -F. graminearum activity both in the medium and on the wheat grains. The inhibition rate reached 83.8 % at 8 mg/mL in vitro , while the growth of the hyphae was effectively restrained at 4 mg/g in vivo . CMFE could damage the mycelial cell wall and trigger intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, thus exhibiting its anti- F. graminearum activity. Our results showed that the biocompatible CMFE would be an environment-friendly substitute to chemical fungicides for the prevention of fungal contamination caused by F. graminearum .

Electrochemical mechanism of eugenol at a Cu doped gold nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode and its analytical application in food samples

Xiaoyun Lin,Yongnian Ni,Serge Kokot

A simple one-step electrodeposition method was used to construct a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which has been modified with Cu doped gold nanoparticles (GNPs), i.e. a Cu@AuNPs/GCE. This electrode was characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The eugenol was electrocatalytically oxidized at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE. At this electrode, in comparison with the behavior at the GCE alone, the corresponding oxidation peak current was enhanced and the shift of the oxidation potentials to lower values was observed. Electrochemical behavior of eugenol at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE was investigated with the use of the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique, and additionally, in order to confirm the electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols, CVs for catechol, guaiacol and vanillin were investigated consecutively. Based on this work, an electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols was suggested, and in addition, the above Cu@AuNPs/GCE was successfully employed for the analysis of eugenol in food samples.

Self-assembly of eugenol-loaded particles to regulate the adhesion of carriers on leaves for efficient foliar applications and ecotoxicological safety

Tao Zhang,Hongzhen Sun,Shuai Hu,Shaowu Ding,Peng Zhang,Ling Wang,Weidi Fan,Feng Liu,Wei Mu,Xiuyu Pang

Currently, there is a pressing need to develop an agrochemical-loaded system that is both uncomplicated and efficient, thereby enhancing the adhesion of agrochemical to leaf surfaces and optimizing their insecticidal efficacy, while concurrently mitigating environmental risks. The flexible eugenol-loaded particles were synthesized via a one-step polyurethane self-assembly reaction, utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the soft segment and 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the hard segment. The increase in the length of the soft segment enhances the flexibility of the particles, thereby improving the contact area and adhesion with the foliar surface. When flexible particles are applied on the foliar surface, they can achieve satisfactory resistance to rainfall erosion. When the PEG molecular weight is 800, the residual concentration of eugenol can still reach 42.11% after 6 washes. The carrier protects the active ingredients and improves the resistance to ultraviolet irradiation. After 5 h of ultraviolet irradiation, the concentration of eugenol remained at 59.03% when PEG with a molecular weight of 200 was employed. Greenhouse experiments showed that the flexible transformation of particles greatly enhanced the application effect of spray on the foliar surface of particles. After undergoing three washes, the mortality of the particles can be enhanced by 5.4–8.4 times compared to that of emulsion concentrate (EC) sample. The enhancement of leaf retention performance reduces environmental risks caused by pesticide loss. Meanwhile, the controlled release of particles also reduces the acute toxicity to zebrafish. The toxicity selection pressure of the EUG@P800-Ps sample is 10.6 times that of the EC sample. In conclusion, the preparation process of the system is simple, and the flexible transformation is an effective strategy to improve the foliar application effect of spray and improve the environmental safety.

Preparation and characterization of carboxymethyl chitosan/pullulan composite film incorporated with eugenol and its application in the preservation of chilled meat

Zhen Zeng,Yu-Jing Yang,Qian Tu,Yu-Ying Jian,Da-Ming Xie,Ting Bai,Shan-Shan Li,Yun-Tao Liu,Cheng Li,Cai-Xia Wang,Ai-Ping Liu

To solve the problem of easy spoilage of chilled meat during storage, we fabricated a novel composite film using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/pullulan (Pul)/eugenol (E) by casting method. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the films were better when the CMCS/Pul ratio was 2.5/2.5. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that intermolecular hydrogen bonds were formed among E, CMCS, and Pul, which was consistent with the rheological test results. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images showed that eugenol was well dispersed in the CMCS/Pul matrix. The addition of eugenol significantly increased the antibacterial properties and antioxidant properties. Moreover, when 5% eugenol was added, the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the film reduced to 2.41 × 10 −11  g/m·s·Pa. Finally, the freshness of the chilled meat wrapped with the eugenol-containing composite film was prolonged, thereby offering a potential alternative to synthetic materials.

Incorporation of cinnamaldehyde, carvacrol, and eugenol into zein films for active food packaging: enhanced mechanical properties, antimicrobial activity, and controlled release

Yu Hongrui,Huang Xueying,Zhou Liping,Wang Yi

Active packaging with antimicrobial functions to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of food products has gained great interest. Because commercial plastic packaging materials are not biodegradable and cause great environmental problems, plant-derived natural materials have been widely studied for the application of biodegradable packaging materials. Herein, we reported a study of essential oils (EOs)-loaded zein film. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN), carvacrol, and eugenol were added to equip the films with antimicrobial effects, while polyethylene glycol (PEG) and oleic acid (OA) were selected for the improvements of mechanical properties. The results showed that PEG efficiently improves the tensile strength and elongation (%E) of zein films compared to OA, although PEG induced weaker water barrier properties of the films than OA. FTIR spectra confirmed the formation of the hydrogen bonds between zein and PEG/OA. The EO-embedded zein film showed better antimicrobial effects than EO themselves. CIN-embedded films showed the highest antimicrobial effect among the three EOs. The sizes of the inhibition zones against Staphylococcus aureus of PEG-added zein films with 1%, 3%, and 5% CIN were 5.67, 12.67, and 16.67 mm, which were larger than that of pure CIN, with the sizes of 0.00, 3.00, and 4.67 mm, respectively. The developed films demonstrate a gradual release of EOs and show antimicrobial effects up to 96 h, indicating their high potential for the applications as active food packaging.

Allyl compound with fully biomass content derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and eugenol to form high-performance thiol-ene click polymers

Yazhou Tian,Xiangyuan Li,Wei Yang,Liwei Wang,Xiuli Wang,Ying Ding,Jiangyan Ren,Jue Cheng,Fugui Zhao

Designing and preparing a biomass-based monomer with fully biomass content is of great significance for achieving sustainability, which is in line with the target of Carbon neutrality and Carbon peak. In this work, an allyl compound (FDEU) was designed and synthesized derived from eugenol (Eu) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and the biomass content of FDEU was as high as 100%. Two thiol-ene crosslinked polymers (TCPs), FDEU/4SH and FDEU/3SH, were prepared via solvent-free UV-light thiol-ene click reaction. The curing behavior and combination properties which include thermal properties, thermal mechanical properties, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of FDEU/4SH and FDEU/3SH were systematically investigated. The results showed that FDEU/4SH and FDEU/3SH had similar curing reactivity, and FDEU/4SH exhibited better thermal resistance, modulus, and strength. In particular, the glass transition temperature ( T gDMA ) of FDEU/4SH was 66.6 °C. Additionally, the tensile strength of FDEU/4SH was (56.2 ± 2.3) MPa; and tensile modulus of FDEU/4SH was (1.4 ± 0.2) GPa. Moreover, FDEU/4SH exhibited excellent thermal stability without obvious weight loss ( T d5% ) of 311.5 °C. The factor behind these excellent comprehensive properties of FDEU/4SH is its well-designed chemical structure of FDEU, which not only has 100% of biomass content but also has a rigid aromatic structure and furan ring.

Effects of chitosan/eugenol-loaded IRMOF-3 nanoparticles composite films on reactive oxygen species metabolism and microbial community dynamics in postharvest strawberries

Yuyue Qin,Hongda Yu,Kejun Chen,Rui Cui,Jianxin Cao,Zhengxuan Wang,Zhi-Hong Zhang,Thanapop Soteyome

The market value of strawberries is considerably impacted by quality deterioration and senescence during postharvest storage. In the study, the effect of isoreticular metal-organic skeleton (IRMOF-3) nanoparticles loaded with eugenol/chitosan-based active packaging film on the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the change rule of the structure of the microbial community in strawberries inoculated with strawberries spoilage bacteria ( Botrytis cinerea ) during the storage period was investigated. The results demonstrated that composite film contribute to the sustenance of reduced hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion concentrations and the suppression of malondialdehyde accumulation, in contrast to the control group. This investigation revealed that the composite film significantly bolstered the antioxidant enzyme activities and disease resistance-related enzyme activities of strawberries, encompassing polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). Moreover, the transcription levels of SOD and CAT genes were notably elevated in strawberries packed within the composite films. Besides, the composite film had an inhibitory effect on pathogenic bacterial genera ( Ralstonia , Sphingomonas , and Erwinia ) and fungal genera ( Botrytis cinerea ) that cause strawberries spoilage and a delayed decline in bacterial genera (unidentified_ Chloroplast and Chryseobacterium ) and fungal genera ( Rhodotorula ) that are biocontrols of strawberries postharvest diseases. Therefore, this study provides novel perspectives on the mechanisms underlying the preservation of fruits and vegetables, focusing on alterations in ROS metabolism and microbiota composition during storage.

Valorization of walnut shell biochar in hemp fibre reinforced isosorbide epoxy/eugenol benzoxazine copolymer composites: physical, water absorption, mechanical, and thermal properties

Wang Ying,Dayo Abdul Qadeer,Li Jie

Growing eco-awareness drives research into natural filler-reinforced composites, but hydrophobicity and incompatibility of fillers with matrices are significant challenges. This study investigates the effects of walnut shell biochar (WSBC) as an additive filler in silane-treated hemp fibre (SHF) composites produced with a bio-based epoxy/benzoxazine copolymer via an isothermal compression molding technique. The WSBC particles having 43.66 μm average particle size were produced in a N 2 atmosphere pyrolysis at 400 °C. Produced composites were tested for mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties. The water absorption was significantly reduced as the loading of WSBC share was enhanced. The optimal mechanical properties were recorded on 12 wt% WSBC particle reinforcement, including tensile strength (87.47 ± 3.98 MPa), Young’s modulus (5.66 ± 0.16 GPa), flexural strength (167.47 ± 4.89 MPa), flexural modulus (6.51 ± 0.24 GPa), and impact strength (18.51 ± 0.54 kJ/m 2 ). The highest storage modulus and the lowest damping factor values were observed for the WSBC15 specimen. Moreover, thermal stability was gradually enhanced, and the highest char yield (53.46 ± 0.15%) was recorded for the WSBC15 specimen. Results confirm that these lightweight and eco-friendly composites are promising for structural applications, sporting goods, and internal parts of automotive and aerospace industries.

Novel fabrication of robust superhydrophobic polyester fabric with eugenol based on thiol-ene click chemistry for self-cleaning and water–oil separation

Ailing Xie,Xinpeng Chen,Xin Ai,Yahui Wang,Yirong Wang,Xiaowei Zhu,Tieling Xing,Guoqiang Chen

In this work, natural phenol eugenol and 1-octadecanethiol was adopted to fabricate superhydrophobic polyester (PET) fabric through click chemistry reaction. The surface of PET fabric was treated with eugenol to further chelate metal ions to increase the roughness. Then, under the UV irradiation and catalysis of photo initiator benzoin dimethyl ether (DMPA), 1-octadecanethiol was introduced to reduce the surface energy of fabric surface through the click chemistry reaction between the double bond in the molecular structure of eugenol and sulfhydryl group, thus the superhydrophobic PET fabric with water contact angle (WCA) of 163.8° and scrolling angle (SA) of 3.47° was prepared. XPS and FTIR results confirmed that Fe 2+ and -SH were successfully co-deposited on the surface of PET fabric through eugenol. The tests results showed that the modified PET fabric maintains stable mechanical properties . Its superhydrophobic property had good stability and durability in the harsh environment of simulated seawater immersion, UV irradiation, acid/alkali and organic reagents erosion. The superhydrophobic fabric also has good self-cleaning performance and oil-water separation performance after repeated use for 25 times and the separation efficiency was more than 95%, which has good application prospects in oily wastewater treatment and protective textiles.

Self-healable, reprocessable and anti-flammable eugenol-derived covalent adaptable thermosets based on dynamic covalent boronic esters and thiol–ene click chemistry

Haoxin Niu,Yu Li,Ping Zhang,Wenwen Guo,Xin Wang,Yuan Hu

Due to their excellent properties, thermosetting polymer materials have been widely used in many fields. Owing to the restriction of the crosslinked network, traditional thermosetting polymer materials exhibit insolubility and immiscibility. Therefore, the reprocessing of thermosetting polymer materials is a great challenge. With the depletion of petroleum-based resources, the utilization of natural resources for the preparation of bio-based thermosetting polymer materials is a major trend. In this study, eugenol-based covalent adaptable thermosets were prepared via UV curing and thermal curing according to thiol click chemistry. The mechanical properties of the eugenol-based covalent adaptable thermosets, which are better than those of the control sample, can be regulated according to the components. The eugenol-based covalent adaptable thermosets exhibited excellent transparency and UV shielding properties. The introduction of a dynamic covalent boronic ester (BSH) promoted the formation of residual char and enhanced the fire safety of the eugenol-based covalent adaptable thermosets. Owing to the dynamic borate ester bonds in the cross-linked network, the eugenol-based covalent adaptable thermosets exhibited significant stress relaxation behavior, and excellent shape memory function and self-healing properties. The samples were reprocessed at 100 °C several times. After three cycles of pulverizing and hot pressing, the recovery ratio of tensile strength of the reprocessed samples remained above 85%. This study provides a novel strategy for preparing self-healable, reprocessable and anti-flammable covalent adaptable thermosets with tunable mechanical properties.
