Using photo-induced p-n junction interface effect of CoMn2O4/β-MnO2 oxidase mimetics for colorimetric determination of hydroquinone in seawater

Meiyan Zhu,Xiaotong Dong,Ming Li,Liangbin Jia,Ye Ma,Minggang Zhao,Hongzhi Cui

Detection of pollutants in seawater faces a great challenge of strong interference, and the facile detection method is lacked. The CoMn 2 O 4 /β-MnO 2 p-n junction oxidase mimetics were successfully prepared for colorimetric detection of hydroquinone in seawater. The catalysis ability was enhanced significantly by the photo-induced p-n junction interface effect. It not only promoted the formation of H 2 O 2 by suppressing the recombination of photon-generated carriers, but also provided the driving force for electron transport . The colorimetric detection of hydroquinone was achieved by fading and exhibited good adaptability in seawater. The obtained good recovery rate (97.23%–101.37%) in seawater makes it an inspiring method for practical application. The photo-induced p-n junction interface effect provides an opportunity for developing the application of colorimetric sensing in seawater detection.

Direct synthesis of highly porous interconnected carbon nanosheets from sodium D-isoascorbic acid for the simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone

Yin Zheng,Jiabing Chen,Youluan Lu,Xinjian Song,Zhen Shi

Three-dimensional interconnected porous carbon nanosheets were prepared through pyrolyzing sodium D-isoascorbic acid, and were thoroughly characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The specific surface area and pore size distribution of the porous carbon nanosheets were characterized by N2 adsorption desorption. The thickness of the carbon nanosheet was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). An electrochemical sensor was fabricated by the modification of the porous carbon nanosheets onto a glassy carbon electrode surface. The electrochemical behaviors of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CA) on the electrochemical sensor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. Under the optimized conditions, the peak currents were found to be linear to the HQ and CA concentrations in the range from 0.4 to 20 μmol L−1, and the detection limits were 0.028 μmol L−1 (HQ) and 0.035 μmol L−1 (CA), respectively.

Simultaneous Detection of Hydroquinone, Catechol and Resorcinol by an Electrochemical Sensor Based on Ammoniated-Phosphate Buffer Solution Activated Glassy Carbon Electrode

Hong-Ying LIU,Lang-Lang ZHU,Zhi-Heng HUANG,Yu-Bing QIU,Han-Xiao XU,Jia-Jun WEN,Wei-Wei XIONG,Li-Hua LI,Chun-Chuan GU

An electrochemical sensor was successfully fabricated by coupled ammoniated modification with PBS activation on glassy carbon electrodes (CA-GCE) and characterized by electrochemical impedance spectra. The CA-GCE showed outstanding electrochemical performance, and was applied to simultaneous detection of resorcinol (RC), catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ), which could be ascribed to new active sites by the introduction of amino and oxygen-containing groups and H-bonds formed between hydroxyl groups of RC, CC, and HQ with amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of CA-GCE. The reaction kinetics of RC, CC, and HQ and their reaction on CA-GCE were studied. Experimental results showed that the electrochemical reaction was adsorption controlled. Under the optimal conditions, the linear detection ranges for RC, CC, and HQ were 5–200 μM, 10–300 μM, and 1–300 μM, respectively, with their detection limits of 0.47, 0.23 and 0.46 μM, respectively. Interference and repeatability was further investigated. This strategy opened a new horizon for qualitative and quantitative detection of dihydroxy benzene.

MOF/PAN nanofiber-derived N-doped porous carbon materials with excellent electrochemical activity for the simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone

Mengxin Zhang,Meishan Li,Wangui Wu,Junkun Chen,Xiuling Ma,Zhangjing Zhang,Shengchang Xiang

In this work, ZIF-67 decorated with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was electrospun to obtain composite ZIF-67/PAN nanofibers, which were used to construct C-ZIF-67/PAN-800 via one-step pyrolysis at 800 °C under a N2 atmosphere. Then, a strategy for constructing a sensor for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) was proposed using a C-ZIF-67/PAN-800-modified glass carbon electrode (GCE). Additionally, C-ZIF-67-800 was fabricated as a reference through the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 in the absence of PAN at 800 °C. C-ZIF-67/PAN-800/GCE showed much better electrochemical activity for the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC than C-ZIF-67-800/GCE. Under optimal conditions, C-ZIF-67/PAN-800/GCE exhibited a wide detection range of 1–120 μM and 1–200 μM for HQ and CC, respectively, and both detection limits were 1.0 μM. Our work proves that the electrochemical properties of MOF-derived porous carbon materials can be tuned by electrospinning.

Design of Fe and N co-decorated biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon frameworks with boosted oxidase-like activity for hydroquinone detection

Han Zhang,Xiaodan Qi,Zhifei Wang,Lihua Jin,Yehua Shen

The exploration of efficient, easily fabricated and inexpensive carbon-based nanozymes with accessible active sites is important for expanding the applications of nanozymes. In this study, an Fe and N co-decorated porous carbon framework (Fe–N–C) derived from walnut shells was designed and prepared by microenvironment modulation consisting of chemical activation and pore-making engineering. The hierarchical pore size distribution not only can increase the exposure of defects and provide a suitable environment for the favorable incorporation of Fe–Nx active sites into carbon matrixes, but also can provide a higher specific surface area to facilitate substrate binding. For these reasons, the prepared Fe–N–C material was found to possess excellent oxidase-like activity, which could catalyze the activation of dissolved oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) to oxidize chromogenic substrates. Interestingly, this oxidase mimic behavior would be effectively suppressed by an antioxidant – hydroquinone (HQ). Based on this observation, we proposed a sensitive and visible colorimetric platform for HQ assay, with a detection limit of 0.09 μM. This research not only provides new ideas for the preparation of economical carbon-based nanozymes, but also further expands the application of biomass-based carbon materials as nanozymes in the field of environmental pollutant detection.

Decoration of Covalent Polyoxometalate-Organic Frameworks with Pt Nanoparticles and Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Simultaneous Electrochemical Detection of Hydroquinone and Catechol

Na Li,Jing-Ru Huang,Hong-Yue Zhang,Min Cui,Bao Sun,Cong Zhang,Hai-Yan Zhao

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are isomers with similar structures, which destroyed ecosystem balance and human health at an alarming rate. Therefore, it is critical to monitor HQ and CC in the environment simultaneously. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes and covalent polyoxometalate-organic frameworks (CPOFs) modified by nanoparticles (PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs) was designed for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CC. Polyoxometalates (POMs) have been extensively studied in the area of electrochemical sensors because of rich reversible multielectron redox behavior. The porous and long stick-shaped CPOFs was synthesized by solvothermal Schiff base reaction, with NH2-POM-NH2 and 2,5-dimethoxy-phenyl-1,4-diformaldehyde as monomers. Using the porosity and large surface area of CPOFs, the obtained PtNPs@CPOFs nanocomposite showed an improved distribution of electroactive sites. At the same time, highly conductive MWCNTs was incorporated to guarantee the conductivity. Consequently, PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs was obtained to improve the electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. The results showed that the PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs/GCE performed a wide range and low detection limit toward the detection of HQ and CC simultaneously. Furthermore, PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs/GCE also had great stability and anti-interference ability.

Molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor for ultrasensitive and selective detection of hydroquinone using 0D CdS nanoparticle/3D flower-like ZnIn2S4 microsphere nanocomposite

Lan Wang,Feng Yue,Shuo Zhang,Cong Li,Bang Tan,Jingjing Du,Baodan Jin,Xiaojing Zhang,Yongpeng Ma,Hongzhong Zhang

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for the ultra-sensitive and highly selective detection of hydroquinone (HQ), featuring a composite structure that combines 0D CdS nanoparticles with a 3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 microsphere . The sensor, termed rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 , employed molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to achieve specific recognition of HQ. An p-phenylenediamine (pPD) polymer film was electrochemically polymerized onto the surface of the CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 composite-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Through hydrogen bonding, HQ molecules were imprinted onto the polymer film. Subsequent elution removed these molecules, leaving behind specific recognition sites, enabling selective detection of HQ. The unique spatial structure and heterojunction properties of the 0D CdS nanoparticle/3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 composite, combined with molecular imprinting, significantly enhanced the photocurrent response and increased the selectivity and sensitivity for HQ detection. Under optimal conditions, the rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 sensor demonstrated a low detection limit (0.7 nmol·L −1 , S/N=3) over a wide linear range of 1–1200 nmol·L −1 . The sensor was successfully applied to detect HQ in real water samples, showing promise for environmental pollution control applications.

Preparation of poly ionic liquid-mesoporous carbon nanospheres and its application in simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol, and detection of paracetamol

Yingying Song,Yingzhen Zhang,Jie Li,Changhui Tan,Yancai Li

Highly ordered and uniformly sized mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCNs) were synthesized by a low-concentration hydrothermal method . Then, a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) was incorporated into the MCNs by a hydrothermal method to form (polymeric ionic liquid)/(mesoporous carbon nanospheres) (PIL-MCNs) nanocomposites . The MCNs and PIL-MCNs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The characterization results demonstrate that the materials are highly ordered and possess uniform size. The PIL-MCNs modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits good electrocatalytic properties to the redox of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and paracetamol (PA), and typical oxidation peak potentials are of 0.214 V, 0.321 V and 0.509 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), respectively. The PIL-MCNs/CS/GCE was used to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC, and also the detection of PA. Under optimal conditions, the responses to HQ, CC and PA are linear in 10–350 μM, 10–400 μM and 1–300 μM, and the detection limits are 1.39, 0.62, and 0.164 μM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained in determination of HQ, CC simultaneously in spiked tap water samples, and in the detection of PA in paracetamol tablets. In addition, the sensor displays satisfied selectivity, good reproducibility and stability.

Shengbiao Zheng,Jiaqi Hu,Xue Cui,Tao Hu,Yuyang Zhang,Jiahao Guo,Jing Tang,Xuchun Wang

In the present study, we report a facile method for preparing a porous MWCNTs/ZIF-67 nanocomposite with the help of a morphology-maintained ZIF-67 in situ growth on multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Interesting, the MWCNTs/ZIF-67 nanocomposite demonstrated excellent electrochemical activity for hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) attribute to the effective interconnections ZIF-67 crystals and MWCNTs. The analytical curves for HQ and CC obtained by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were linear in the range from 0.5 to 100 μM. Benefitting from the excellent conductivity of MWCNTs as well as the high surface area and porosity of ZIF-67, the advanced nanocomposite displayed good reproducibility, high selectivity and excellent stability, and was successfully employed to assay the content of dihydroxybenzene isomers in the lake water samples.

Siyi Yang,Mei Yang,Qingyan Liu,Xiaojing Wang,Huanbao Fa,Yongzhong Wang,Changjun Hou

Three dihydroxybenzene isomers, hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC) and resorcinol (RS), were determined simultaneously by an ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode modified by multiwalled carbon nanotube@reduced graphene oxide nanoribbon (MWCNT@rGONR) composite. The material was synthesized via hydrothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). We used cyclic voltammetry (CV) to study the electrochemical performance of the three isomers and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) to optimize the experimental parameters. Based on the optimal experimental condition, our electrochemical sensor displayed a good linear relationship with the concentration range of 15 to 921 μM, 15 to 1101 μM, and 15 to 1301 μM and detection limit of 3.89 μM, 1.73 μM and 5.77 μM for HQ, CC and RS respectively. The electrochemical sensor based on MWCNT@GONR composite showed outstanding ability of reproducibility, stability and anti-interference. In addition, this sensor was also used successfully for simultaneous determination of HQ, CC and RS in real samples with satisfactory result.

Qingxiang Zhou,Man Lei,Yalin Wu,Xianqi Zhou,Hongyuan Wang,Yi Sun,Xueying Sheng,Yayan Tong

Present study prepared a new magnetic and thermo dual-responsive core-shell nanomaterial (Fe@SiO 2 @poly(N-isopropylacrymide-co-methacrylic acid, Fe@SiO 2 @PNIPAM-co-MAA), which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The new nanomaterials integrated with the magnetism of nanoscale zero valent iron material and thermo-response of the copolymers , and were utilized to investigate the adsorption capacity for typical phenols such as bisphenol A, phenol and hydroquinone from water samples, and the results showed that the magnetic and thermo dual-responsive core-shell nanomaterial exhibited good adsorption ability to typical phenols. Based on these, a sensitive method was developed for the determination of bisphenol A, phenol and hydroquinone using as-prepared magnetic nanoparticles as the magnetic solid phase extraction sorbent prior to high performance liquid chromatography coupled with variable wavelength detection. Under the optimal conditions, linear linearity was obtained over the range of 0.1–500 μg L −1 with the correlation coefficients (r 2 ) above 0.996. The detection limits of three analytes were in the range of 0.019–0.031 μg L −1 , and the precisions were all less than 4.8% (n = 6). The developed method was evaluated with real water samples and excellent spiked recoveries in the range of 94.0–105.4% were achieved. These results indicated that the proposed method was a robust analytical tool and a useful alternative for routine analysis of such pollutants.

Synergistic Extraction of Hydroquinone from Aqueous Solution with Solvent Mixture of 2-Pentanone and n-Pentanol: Liquid–Liquid Equilibria and Data Correlation

Chao Guo,Yangtong Tan,Yu Qian,Siyu Yang

The synergistic effect for a solvent mixture of 2-pentanone and n-pentanol to extract hydroquinone from aqueous solution was investigated. Liquid–liquid equilibria data for the quaternary (2-pentanone + n-pentanol + hydroquinone + water) system were measured under atmospheric pressure at 298.2 K, using various compositions of solvent mixture. The tie-line length was calculated to estimate the size of the immiscibility zone. The distribution coefficient and separation factor were calculated to evaluate the extraction efficiencies. The experimental data were correlated with NRTL and UNIQUAC models, and the corresponding binary interaction parameters were obtained.
