In order to achieve efficient fractionation and valorization of sugarcane bagasse, a p-TsOH-mediated DES was developed by incorporating a small amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) into a mixture of choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA). This novel DES system can effectively separate and modulate the structure of lignin and achieve efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of the residual substrate. Under optimal conditions (100 °C, 2 h, ChCl : LA : p-TsOH = 1 : 1 : 0.1), high removal efficiencies of lignin (85.80%) and xylan (91.69%) were achieved. The glucose yield of the residue reached 97.28% after 72 h of enzymatic hydrolysis, representing a 348% increase compared with the sample without p-TsOH addition. In addition, regenerated lignin with distinct structures was obtained precisely by adjusting the pretreatment temperature from 60 °C to 120 °C. The β-O-4 linkages decreased from 29.81/100Ar to zero, while H-type units increased to 33.67/100Ar. Meanwhile, massive G-type units were converted to catechol structures via demethylation. These lignin samples were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gels via self-assembly, and the resulting lignin-PVA gels exhibited excellent mechanical strength (10.67–14.86 MPa), Young's modulus (10.48–17.00 MPa), and toughness (30.37–89.91 MJ m−3), representing a significant improvement over the original PVA gel (0.58 MPa, 0.16 MPa, 1.29 MJ m−3). In addition, favorable photothermal conversion performance was also observed. Overall, this work provides a novel strategy for biorefinery, which can be applied for the comprehensive upgradation of lignocellulosic components.

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) can significantly address the heterogeneity of lignin and enhance its application potential. However, the structure activity relationship between the structure of lignin and LNPs has been underexplored. In this study, lignin was extracted using a ternary deep eutectic solvents (DES) of choline chloride (ChCl)/5-sulfosalicylic acid (5Saa)/γ-valerolactone (GVL). The molecular structures of DES Ⅰ-L, DES Ⅱ-L, and DES Ⅲ-L were regulated by varying the temperature (85, 105, and 125 °C). Compared to softwood kraft lignin (SKL), lignin with small molecular weight was obtained. In particular, good homogeneity (PDI 1.55, 1.58, and 1.59) was found. The dispersion stability and pH response of DES Ⅰ-LNPs, DES Ⅱ-LNPs, and DES Ⅲ-LNPs were remarkable. In particular, DES Ⅱ-LNPs was the smallest (32 nm) and exhibited the highest stability (no flocculation within 90 d). DES-LNPs exhibited high shear viscosity, a gentle shear decay trend, low yield stress and shear sensitivity. The phenolic hydroxyl groups rich in lignin promoted the interaction, leading to an increase in the size of LNPs. Fortunately, its smaller molecular weight formed an effective complement. The structure activity relationship between the structure of lignin and LNPs was established, providing theoretical support for the efficient conversion and application of LNPs.

The challenges in high value-added utilization of lignin own to its wide molecular weight distribution and complex physicochemical properties associated with it. How to narrow the molecular weight of lignin and elucidate the differences in physiochemical properties related to molecular weight of lignins is of crucial importance for lignin conversion processing. In this study, lab-made Kraft and ethanol lignins were fractionated into several narrower molecular weight distribution components through a designed solvent system. The yield, molecular weight distribution, structural characterization and their physicochemical properties of each fractionated lignin were analyzed comparatively. The results indicated that the yield of ethanol lignin is higher (8.44 %) than that of Kraft lignin (5.26 %). Kraft lignin shows lower molecular weight (Mw=2480 g/mol), higher hydroxyl content (4.29 mmol/g), and lower content of β- O -4 and β-5 bonds compared to ethanol lignin (Mw=3682 g/mol, 2.10 mmol/g). Meanwhile, the phenolic hydroxyl content in both ethanol and Kraft lignins increased with the decrease of molecular weight. Furthermore, ethanol lignin demonstrated higher antioxidant activity and much higher (65times) tensile strength of lignin-based polyurethane elastomer than that of Kraft lignin-based polyurethane elastomer.

Direct lignin fuel cells (DLFC) are one of the important forms of high value-added utilization of lignin. In this study, lignin was studied not only as a fuel but also as a catalyst. Specifically, Kraft lignin was modified with ZnCl 2 , KOH and THF (Tetrahydrofuran) respectively, and added to the catalyst after activation. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer − Emmett − Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectra shown that AL/FePc-NrGO (activated lignin/iron phthalocyanine/nitrogen-doped reduction of graphene oxide) three-dimensional composite catalyst has been synthesized. The results showed that KOH-activated Kraft lignin had the best performance as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.73 V and a limiting diffusion current density of 4.3 mA cm −1 . The THF-modified catalyst showed similar stability and methanol resistance to 20 % Pt/C at ORR. The ORR catalyst applied to the DLFC has the best electrical performance with an open circuit voltage (OCV) was 0.53 V and the maximum power density it could reach 95.29 mW m −2 when the catalyst was modified with THF. It is encouraging that the AL/FePc-NrGO catalyst has better-generated electricity performance than 20 % Pt/C. This work has provided a new idea for developing non-noble metal catalysts and studying direct biomass liquid fuel cells.

The enhanced utilization of biomass-derived chemicals for the generation of high value aromatics through an advanced catalytic strategy has captured considerable attention within the realm of eco-friendly manufacturing. This work presented four innovative three-dimensional rod-shaped mesoporous Ce-based MOF materials, which were coupled with a H-donor solvent to facilitate vanillin hydrodeoxygenation and macromolecular lignin. Under the optimized conditions (30 mg CoCe@C catalyst, 2 MPa N 2 pressure, 15 mL isopropanol, 190 °C, and 5 h), the CoCe@C catalyst achieved nearly complete conversion of vanillin and demonstrated 87.8 % selectivity in the hydrogen-donor solvent. The characterization findings suggested that the synergy between metallic Co and oxygen vacancy sites enabled the effective activation of CHO group in vanillin, leading to formation of reactive product MMP . In addition, the optimal CoCe@C catalyst could also achieve macromolecular lignin hydrodeoxygenation to obtain high yield of lignin oil products with narrower molecular weight distribution . This study presented a viable approach for the concurrent utilization of lignin derivatives in the generation of high value fuels and chemicals.

Catalytic depolymerization is a favorable option for the valorization of industrial lignin. In this study, a new strategy was demonstrated for the efficient reductive depolymerization of industrial lignin based on a complex solvent of choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-LA) DES integrated with ethanol and a C-supported N-doped niobium-based catalyst with industrial lignin as carbon source (NBC@N-LC). It was found that the introduction of ethanol significantly improved the conversion of industrial lignin in ChCl-LA. More delightfully, depolymerization of industrial lignin in the complex solvent of DES-ethanol was further promoted by using the fabricated NBC@N-LC, exhibiting the best lignin dissolution performance, the lowest undepolymerized lignin yield of 21.9 % and the highest monomers yield of 31.8 %. 4-Ethylphenol was observed to dominate the monomers with 53.6 % selectivity, revealing the directional reactivity of the catalytic depolymerization process. Reaction pathway analysis showed that the synergistic effect of NBC@N-LC and DES-ethanol led to the efficient depolymerization of lignin, in which DES acted as an excellent solvent for lignin and depolymerized intermediates, ethanol acted as an in-situ hydrogen donor, and NBC@N-LC acted as a provider of reaction sites and acid active centers. In conclusion, this work offers a good alternative compared to the available lignin depolymerization method in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and cost aspects.

A novel coprecipitation process was developed to prepare lignin/silica hybrids using sodium metasilicate and alkali lignin (AL) from pulping black liquor. AL was first modified by quaternization to synthesize quaternized alkali lignin (QAL). The QAL/SiO 2 hybrids with different contents of lignin, which were prepared via the coprecipitation of QAL and sodium metasilicate in aqueous solution, were microspheres having a diameter of 300–400 nm and that were analyzed by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD, and TG analysis. Interestingly, these novel QAL/SiO 2 hybrids showed excellent UV-absorption performance and could effectively protect the polyurethane (PU) film from UV radiation when they were blended with PU. The UV transmittance of the PU film was reduced from 13.4% to 0.1% below 315 nm and from 74.8% to 9.7% below 400 nm when the content of the QAL/SiO 2 hybrids increased from 0 to 1.0 wt%. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were also improved owing to the good compatibility between the QAL/SiO 2 hybrids and PU. The results of this study are of significant and practical importance to the value-added utilization of lignin.

To improve the compatibility of an organosolv lignin (OL) in polylactic acid (PLA) blends, a green approach was pursued whereby the lignin was modified with propylene carbonate (PC) to increase its aliphatic hydroxyl content, and thereby, its reactivity. The oxyalkylated organosolv lignin (OOL, synthesized at 170°C) was analyzed by quantitative 31 P NMR and showed the number of phenolic hydroxyls decreased from 4.73 to 0.16 mmol·g −1 , and the number of aliphatic hydroxyls increased from 3.56 to 3.92 mmol·g −1 . OOL-g-PLA copolymer (OOLPC) samples were prepared by graft polymerization of L-lactide with the OOL and showed the molecular weights (M n ) to range from 12,343 to 16,834 Da, increasing with the lignin loading of the copolymer. Scanning electron microscope indicated that the graft copolymerization reaction between L-lactide and the OOL afforded a copolymer that was compatible with PLA. The highest increase in elongation at break was 7.43% for the PLA blend films prepared with the OOLPC having a 5.0% loading of OOL; the tensile strength at this level of lignin loading was 12.03% lower. Introducing an OL into the blend films showed excellent ultraviolet absorption ability and thus the OOLPC could be used as a well-dispersed UV-blocking agent for biocompatible packaging materials.

In this work, a mild and efficient process for acid-catalyzed depolymerization of lignin to improve its antioxidant activity was proposed using lignin monomer, p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA), as a novel capping agent. High molecular weight lignin (HMWL) with high β-O-4 linkage content was used as the feedstock for depolymerization, and the products were further extracted by ethyl acetate to obtain the depolymerized ethyl acetate soluble lignin (DESL) with high antioxidant capacity. Moreover, the mechanism of the promoted depolymerization through the utilization of the capping agent was proposed and verified using a lignin dimer model with a β-O-4 linkage. The results showed that the HBA substantially suppressed lignin condensation and increased the DESL yield. When the HBA dosage was 3 mmol/g lignin, the DESL yield obtained at 150 °C was 51.88%, which was 2.7 times and 1.9 times those obtained at 150 and 210 °C without HBA addition, respectively. Besides, the DPPH· scavenging capacity (IC50, 65.2 μg/mL) of DESL obtained at 150 °C with HBA addition was significantly higher than that obtained without HBA addition (125.7 μg/mL) and was close to that of commercial antioxidant BHT (57.3 μg/mL). Accordingly, this work demonstrates that the acid catalysis process using lignin monomer as a capping agent is effective to produce depolymerized lignin with high antioxidant activity. Furthermore, this study provides new insights for the efficient acid-catalyzed depolymerization of lignin through condensation suppression using lignin monomer as a capping agent.

As a green and sustainable porous material, wood has attracted more and more attention of researchers, especially in the field of energy storage. However, the poor conductivity of wood limits its application. Herein, a kind of non-carbonized lignin-free wood (LFW)@PANI supercapacitor material is fabricated for renewable energy storage application. The resultant hybrid used as electrode material of supercapacitor shows a good comprehensive electrochemical performance: 1) A high cycle stability of ~96% after experiencing 5000 cycles. 2) A high specific capacitance of ~800 F g −1 and 192 F cm −3 3) Good rate performance. 4) A high energy efficiency of more than 80%. 5) High energy densities of 41 Wh kg −1 (57 Wh L −1 ), meanwhile maintaining high power densities of 43 kW L −1 (68 kW kg −1 ). Compared with the way of carbonization , non-carbonized treatment not only save energy but also be greener. This work is expected to provide more insights and possibilities for application of renewable wood-based materials.

Graphical Faster with microwaves : A choline chloride/oxalic acid dihydrate deep eutectic solvent (DES) is used for fractionation of wood lignocellulose (WL). A combination of DES and microwave irradiation has a synergetic effect on efficiently cleaving lignin–carbohydrate complexes and ultrafast fractionation of WL. The extracted lignin fraction is of low molecular weight, low polydispersity, and high purity. Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and renewable resource for the production of biobased value-added fuels, chemicals, and materials, but its effective exploitation by an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly strategy remains a challenge. Herein, a facile approach for efficiently cleaving lignin–carbohydrate complexes and ultrafast fractionation of components from wood by microwave-assisted treatment with deep eutectic solvent is reported. The solvent was composed of sustainable choline chloride and oxalic acid dihydrate, and showed a hydrogen-bond acidity of 1.31. Efficient fractionation of lignocellulose with the solvent was realized by heating at 80 °C under 800 W microwave irradiation for 3 min. The extracted lignin showed a low molecular weight of 913, a low polydispersity of 1.25, and consisted of lignin oligomers with high purity (ca. 96 %), and thus shows potential in downstream production of aromatic chemicals. The other dissolved matter mainly comprised glucose, xylose, and hydroxymethylfurfural. The undissolved material was cellulose with crystal I structure and a crystallinity of approximately 75 %, which can be used for fabricating nanocellulose. Therefore, this work promotes an ultrafast lignin-first biorefinery approach while simultaneously keeping the undissolved cellulose available for further utilization. This work is expected to contribute to improving the economics of overall biorefining of lignocellulosic biomass.

Typically, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MOF, and polymers are used to prepare solid amine CO 2 adsorbents. In this manuscript, we explored abundant lignin waste to prepare a series of solid amine CO 2 adsorbents via in situ Mannich reactions with commercially available, cheap ethanolamine and polyethyleneimine. Upon optimization of amine loadings and reaction conditions, the novel ethanolamine modified adsorbents showed significantly improved CO 2 capture performance (6.83 mmol/g) compared to native lignin (2.57 mmol/g) under laboratory testing conditions (25 ° C, 1 bar, and 10 vol% CO 2 /Ar). Unfortunately, the captured CO 2 can be regenerated with a maximum limit of 50% under rather harsh conditions, implying likely utilization of the cheap adsorbents loaded with CO 2 as building fillers and adhesives. Elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, CO 2 adsorption isotherm, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis were applied to characterize the texture properties and CO 2 capture mechanisms.
