An innovative phytic acid modified reed straw-derived hydrochar composite (PA-C-RBC) was prepared by using inexpensive reed straw and non-toxic phytic acid for the removal of uranium(VI) from aqueous environment. Several characterization results showed that PA-C-RBC was rough and porous with a large number of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phosphate groups. The uranium(VI) adsorption process by PA-C-RBC conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and the theoretical maximal adsorption capacity could attain 418.78 mg/g at pH 5.0. PA-C-RBC had 72.66 % of selectivity and 6772.99 mL/g of distribution coefficient for U(VI). Due to the strong chelating between the hydroxyl and phosphate groups on PA-C-RBC and U(VI), PA-C-RBC had excellent adsorption selectivity. These finding highlighted a high potential for removing U(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Xuan paper is outstanding representative of the precious Chinese handmade papers which is popular with traditional calligraphy and painting. However, the highly flammability of Xuan paper results in the latent fire risk. In this research, fire-resistant and antibacterial Chinese Xuan papers were prepared by fully bio-based chitosan (CS)/phytic acid (PA) intumescent flame retardant system. Xuan paper achieved the excellent flame retardancy with limit oxygen index value of 36.4% when it was coated with 20 BL CS/PA on pulp fibers . The vertical flame properties and cone calorimetry test of Xuan papers also revealed their flame retardancy were greatly improved. The tensile strength of Xuna paper was slightly influenced by CS/PA coating. The CS/PA coating on Xuan papers could greatly enhance their antibacterial properties . The flame retardant mechanism of coated Xuan papers was investigated. The results showed the CS/PA coating on pulp fibers could act through intumescent flame retardant action. The ink wetting property of Xuan paper won’t be influenced by CS/PA coating on the pulp fibers. This research provides research basis for fire-resistant and antibacterial Xuan papers by using the fully bio-based chitosan/phytic acid coating on pulp fibers.

Bio-based phytic acid is a nontoxic naturally occurring compound and has the potential for use in polymers for flame retardancy due to its high phosphorus content. In this work, two novel phytic acid-based compounds, phytyl octyl glycidyl ether (PAOc) and phytyl phenyl glycidyl ether (PAPh), were prepared through the addition esterification of 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether and phenyl glycidyl ether with phytic acid. The chemical structure of PAOc and PAPh were confirmed by 1 H NMR, 31 P NMR, and FTIR spectra. The mechanical, thermal, and fire performances of the PLA/PAOc and PLA/PAPh blends were investigated by various tests including mechanical, thermal (DSC, TGA), morphological (SEM), and flammability (LOI, UL-94). The results showed that the addition of PAOc and PAPh improved the thermal stability of PLA through hydrogen bonding. PAPh was more effective to improving the mechanical properties and crystalline properties of PLA than PAOc. When PAPh was 5 wt%, the elongation at break of PLA increased from 2.9% to 16.7%, the tensile strength increased from 32 to 37 MPa, and the crystallinity increased from 30.6% to 36.7%. Moreover, introduction of phenyl group was beneficial to phytic acid improving the flame retardant properties of PLA. At an addition level of 10 wt%, the LOI of PLA/PAPh reached 27.5% and achieved UL-94-V0 rating while improving the mechanical properties.

Rice bran oil bodies (RBOBs) are one of the most exploited functional components from rice bran by-products and are predominantly based on oleosin stabilization. In this study, we explored the effects of different concentrations of added (-)-epicatechin, ferulic acid, and phytic acid on the RBOBs stability. The results revealed that the incorporation of all three natural phytoconstituents could reduce the RBOBs particle size and increase emulsifying properties, demonstrating increasing surface hydrophobicity (p < 0.05), and a good antioxidant effect, which was especially obvious with (-)-epicatechin incorporation. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy data demonstrated that these three small molecule substance classes can modify with oleosin on RBOBs surface by covalent and noncovalent effects. Raman spectroscopic analysis illustrated that the vibrational modes of disulphide bonds in oleosin were modified by these three plant natural ingredients. The interactions between the three phytoconstituents and the model protein were investigated by molecular docking experiments.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been widely used in the surface modification and construction of nanocomposites due to their excellent surface activity and high tensile strength. In this manuscript, nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by implanting poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-modified CNCs (CNCs@PGMA) and biomass phytic acid (PA). After extracting CNCs from microcrystalline cellulose, PGMA was successfully grafted on the surface of CNCs by surface-initiated Activator Generated by Electron Transfer Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-AGET ATRP). With the assistance of PA, the reversible hydrogen bonding interaction between the internal structures of the matrix was promoted to construct the CNCs@PGMA/PA self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels. The obtained hydrogels by using CNCs@PGMA and PA as additives have excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 1.39 MPa) and self-healing ability (91.4% after 6 h). This study develops a facile method for the preparation of nanocomposite hydrogels with excellent self-healing properties. Graphical abstract

Abstract A new non-toxic, clean, and effective dry water (DW) nanomaterial is synthesized, and its extinguishing performance is characterized for pool fire. The nanomaterial reaches up to 93% water content due to its special core–shell structure. Phytic acid (PA) is used to functionalize DW to obtain DW/PA because of its biocompatibility and phosphorus-rich properties. The results of the Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal gravity analyzer, and optical microscope successfully verify the preparation of DW/PA samples. The DW/PA samples are cylindrical particles with a length of 100–200 μm and have excellent fluidity, with a repose angle of about 29°. The centrifugation and water loss rate tests indicate that the samples have appropriate mechanical stability and are suitable for storage in closed spaces. The extinguishing efficiency of DW/PA samples is characterized using a fire-extinguishing experiment designed by international standards. The average extinguishing time and consumption of DW/PA samples are reduced by 77.08% and 77.67%, respectively, comparing with commercial ABC dry powder-extinguishing agents. Moreover, fire-extinguishing efficiency is positively correlated with PA content. According to experimental results and established theories, the extinguishing mechanism of DW/PA samples is discussed and divided into three parts: chemical inhibition, the cooling effect, and the asphyxiation effect. Rationale Phytic acid (PA) is both a naturally occurring nutrient and a widely used food additive for conferring antioxidant properties to food. PA can be found in baby foods and it is essential to monitor PA content due to its anti-nutritional properties when present in excess. Current methods for determining PA content are unsatisfactory because interference from inositol phosphates and inorganic phosphates complicates PA quantification. Methods Baby foods were extracted using aqueous HCl, and the extractant was subjected to derivatization with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane after de-metalation using a cation exchange resin. The PA derivative was quantified using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) with a multi-response monitoring mode ( m / z 829 to 451). Results The linearity of the developed analytical method ranged from 10 to 1000 ng/mL for PA with R 2 > 0.999. Reasonable reproducibility was obtained with an intraday relative standard deviation (RSD; N = 5) of 4.5% and an interday RSD ( N = 5) of 5.7% at a concentration of 10 ng/mL. The developed method was successfully applied to determine PA content in various baby foods, with PA recovery between 90.6% and 119.8%. Conclusions A robust and sensitive method for the determination of PA in baby foods has been developed by methyl esterification with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane and using LC/MS/MS analysis. The established method showed good anti-interference and precision, and it has been applied for the determination of PA in various baby foods.

In recent years, new family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide and carbonitrides-MXene has become critical materials due to their excellent structure and performance. Herein, we have investigated the synthesis of a new MXene-based composite material for efficient dye adsorption in sewage treatment, via a facile hydrothermal method . The characterization of the phytic acid (PA)-MXene composites showed that new rod-like Ti(OH)PO 4 components appeared in the hydrothermal process. In addition, compared with the original MXene , the prepared PA-MXene composite exhibited enhanced adsorption properties for the model dyes MB and RhB, and the adsorption capacity of the PA-MXene composite on MB remained at about 85 % after 12 cycles, indicating important potential as an adsorbent material in wastewater treatment .

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with a composite prepared from phytic acid, polypyrrole and a ZIF type metal-organic framework (PA/PPy)/ZIF-8@ZIF-67). The nanocomposite was prepared by in-situ chemical polymerization in the presence of ferric chloride and subsequently functionalized with PA to form PA/PPy/ZIF-8@ZIF-67. The materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, XPS, SEM and TEM. The modified GCE was applied to individual and simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Cu(II), with peak voltages of −0.6 and − 0.1 V, respectively (vs. SCE). The amount of PPy, the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 concentration, polymerization potential, polymerization time and pH value were optimized. Under optimized conditions, the calibration plots have two linear ranges. These are from 0.02 to 200 μM and from 200 to 600 μM for Pb(II), and from 0.2 to 200 μM and 200 to 600 μM for Cu(II). The detection limits are 2.9 nM and 14.8 nM, respectively. Simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Cu(II) is also demonstrated. The good performance of the electrode is attributed to the large surface area of ZIF-8@ZIF-67, the good electrical conductivity of PPy, and the metal complexation power of PA. The modified GCE was successfully applied to the determination of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in real samples and gave satisfactory recoveries.

Efficient removing uranium (U(VI)) from highly acidic environment remain a great challenge for the adsorbent. Herein, a novel hollow phytic acid-based hybrid material (P(Cr)E-7) was synthesized by a mild facile one-pot self-assembly method without template choosing Cr 3+ , phytic acid (PA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) as the inorganic and two organic building blocks. P(Cr)E-7 was employed for U(VI) capture in highly acidic wastewater. Thanks to the flexible segment assembled from EDA and PA, and the strong affinity of PA to U(VI), the maximum adsorption capacity of P(Cr)E-7 for U(VI) reached 282.8 mg/g under the condition of pH = 1.0 in static adsorption experiment. Simultaneously, P(Cr)E-7 showed the selectivity efficiency of almost 100 % for An-Ln and pH-dependent selectivity efficiency of 60 % for U(VI) in multi-ions solution with pH = 1.0. Moreover, P(Cr)E-7 showed excellent stability in 0.1 M HNO 3 and reusability after three cycles at pH = 1.0 benefiting from stable segment from coordination of Cr(III) and PA. Additionally, the SEM, XRD , FTIR, and XPS analysis revealed the adsorption mechanism that U(VI) exchanges with positively charged EDA + /EDA 2+ in P(Cr)E-7 to obtain preferred coordination geometry and ligand environment and further coordinates with P-OH/P = O in PA. This study addresses the practical application of effective adsorption of uranium in highly acidic nuclear industrial wastewater and illustrated a novel material design strategy of adsorbents for uranium extraction.

An innovative chitosan/graphene oxide composite containing phytic acid (PCG) was fabricated directly by a single hydrothermal reaction using graphene oxide, chitosan, and phytic acid as raw materials for the removal of uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated that PCG from the chemical bonding between the hydroxyl group in the phytic acid molecule and the amino group in chitosan possessed flaky surface porous structure, good thermal stability and strong chelating ability to uranium (VI). The adsorption process of PCG for uranium (VI) was consistent with the Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and its maximum adsorption capacity could reach 325.56 mg/g at pH 5.0. The synthesized PCG exhibited higher adsorption selectivity due to the strong chelating of both the hydroxyl groups and phosphate groups on PCG with uranium (VI). With its easy synthesis, facile solid-liquid separation, good biocompatibility, and negligible toxicity, PCG can effectively recover uranium (VI) from uranium-containing wastewater.

Conductive hydrogels as wearable sensors meet the basic requirements of mechanical flexibility and intelligent sensing. However, they are often hampered by problems such as the incompatibility between favorable mechanical properties and high conductivity, inferior antimicrobial ability and difficulty in recycling. Herein, highly conductive and physically cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan-phytic acid (PVA/CS-PA) hydrogels were developed by a facile freeze-thaw method. The hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between PA and matrix of CS and PVA endow hydrogels with not only moderate mechanical properties and high degree of ductility, but also meaningfully recyclable characteristics. In addition, the hydrogel exhibits superior conductivity (~0.125 S cm −1 ) and antimicrobial activity, benefiting from the ionic conductivity and antibacterial capacity of PA molecules. These exceptional properties enable the hydrogel-based wearable sensors to exhibit strain-sensitive properties (a gauge factor of 7.21 under strains of 200%–420%), which could monitor various activities of human body. More interestingly, the PVA/CS-PA sol ink could be transformed into a gel state in an ice bath, which would meet the need of flexible circuit and make wearable sensors more portable.
