Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers with TiO2@NiCo-LDH as Efficient Polysulfide Barriers for Wide-Temperature-Range Li–S Batteries

FuYin Lan,HaiYan Zhang,Jinchen Fan,Qunjie Xu,Hexing Li,YuLin Min

Herein, we introduce polymer nanofibers of TiO2@NiCo-LDH as interlayers into Li–S batteries. From 0 to 60 °C, the interlayers can deliver high sulfur utilization, an outstanding rate capability, and excellent cycling life. High-temperature excitation makes it easier for the valence band electrons of TiO2 to transition to the conduction band. The electron–hole pairs formed on the surface combine with the ether group of 1,3-dioxolane in the electrolyte, which greatly reduces the decomposition and volatilization rates of the electrolyte, ensuring Li–S batteries with good cycle performance at high temperatures. The capacity can stabilize at 798.6 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 60 °C and 1C, and the battery can provide a capacity higher than 323.2 mAh g–1 at 0 °C. Simultaneously, the lithium metal symmetrical battery with a functional separator can be continuously cycled for 1800 and 750 h without a short circuit at the current densities of 0.65 and 1.63 mA cm–2, respectively.

Anchoring function for polysulfide ions of ultrasmall SnS2 in hollow carbon nanospheres for high performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Xueliang Li,Linbo Chu,Yiyi Wang,Lisheng Pan

Tin sulfide-anchored sulfur-hollow carbon nanospheres (S/AHCNS-SnS 2 ) composites are synthesized by uniformly dispersing conductive SnS 2 particles into hollow carbon nanospheres activated with potassium hydroxide, followed by impregnating sulfur. Surface morphology and structure of this composite are characterized using a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, X-ray power diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The first discharge capacity of the sample containing 10   wt.% SnS 2 exhibits a high special capacity value of about 1237.5   mAh   g −1 at 0.2   C, and after 200 cycles retains 924   mAh   g −1 . Tin sulfide particles play a favorable role on adsorption towards polysulfides which would influence electrochemical process. This strategy of immobilization of sulfur with small amount of metal sulfide particles anchored in AHCNS provides a considerable approach to elevate the sulfur loading, coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability for Li–S batteries.

Multi-step Controllable Catalysis Method for the Defense of Sodium Polysulfide Dissolution in Room-Temperature Na–S Batteries

Qianru Ma,Wei Zhong,Guangyuan Du,Yuruo Qi,Shu-juan Bao,Maowen Xu,Changming Li

Room-temperature (RT) sodium–sulfur batteries hold great promise for the development of efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the dissolution of long-chain polysulfides is a huge obstacle. In this work, a composite cathode which integrates Ni/Co bimetal nanoparticles as the catalyst and carbon spheres with abundant channels as the host is prepared for RT Na–S batteries. Moreover, a valuable strategy to reduce the dissolution of polysulfides by accurately regulating the two-step reaction kinetics of polysulfide transformation (from Na2S to long-chain polysulfides and then from polysulfides to sulfur) is presented. Through adjusting the ratio of Ni and Co, the optimal cathode with a Ni/Co ratio of 1:2 can retard the first conversion of Na2S to polysulfides and simultaneously accelerate the subsequent transformation of polysulfides to sulfur. In this case, the soluble polysulfides can immediately transform to solid sulfur as soon as it appears, thus avoiding the shuttle of polysulfides. The galvanostatic intermittent titration method and in situ Raman are employed to supervise the transformation of polysulfides during the discharge/charge process. As a result, the composite shows excellent performance as the cathode of RT liquid/quasi-solid-state Na–S batteries in terms of specific capacities, rate capability, and cycle stability.

Regulation of polysulfide adsorption and LiF-rich interface chemistry to achieve high-performance PEO-based lithium–sulfur batteries

Huanhuan Duan,Leiping Liao,Ran Bi,Yuanfu Deng,Guohua Chen

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries configured with solid-state electrolytes (such as poly(ethylene oxide), PEO), featuring high energy density and safety, seem to have become one of the promising next-generation storage devices. Polysulfide shuttle and lithium dendrite formation still need to be tackled in PEO-based lithium sulfur batteries. In this work, we have developed a functional electrolyte additive, viz. MgF2 (or AlF3) with strong Lewis acidity, to resolve the above dilemma. The introduction of MgF2 restricts the migration of polysulfide species by Lewis acid–base interaction and thus, significantly enhances the coulombic efficiency (more than 98.5% @0.05C, 1C = 1675 mA g−1). Also, a robust SEI composed of LiF-rich and LixMg alloy layer is constructed on the anode, inhibiting the brutal growth of lithium dendrites. The MgF2-functional solid-state electrolyte achieves stable lithium plating/stripping cycles up to 500 h at 0.2 mA cm−2 in a Li//Li symmetric battery. A Li–S battery using such a modified PEO-based electrolyte delivers a high capacity of 982 mA h g−1 and enhanced cyclability (90% capacity retention ratio for 40 days' cycles) at 0.05C. This work provides a guideline for the design of high-performance, long-life PEO-based all solid-state Li–S batteries.

Engineering single-atom catalysts as multifunctional polysulfide and lithium regulators toward kinetically accelerated and durable lithium-sulfur batteries

Donghua Wang,Kaikai Ma,Jiamao Hao,Wenyuan Zhang,Haofeng Shi,Chengdeng Wang,Zhihao Xiong,Zhiming Bai,Fu-Rong Chen,Junjie Guo,Bingshe Xu,Xiaoqin Yan,Yousong Gu

Developing electrocatalyst to ameliorate the shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), sluggish sulfur redox reaction kinetics and the rampant dendrite growth is of paramount importance for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Yet still, the utilization of the most mainstream traditional metal electrocatalytic nanoparticles is far below expectation. Herein, we engineer an exclusive single-atom catalyst with planar Co-N 4 coupling of nitrogen-doped graphene mesh (SA-Co/NGM) to achieve exceptional atom utilization efficiency for catalytic conversion of LiPSs. High surface area and ultra-thin two-dimensional texture can not only accommodate high concentration monodispersed lithiophilic atomic Co sites, but also guarantee homogenize high-flux Li ion transport, alleviating the formation of Li-dendrites. Critically, the maximized exposure of Co-N 4 as a regulator in sulfur electrochemistry can conspicuously suppress the shuttle effect and accelerate bidirectional sulfur redox kinetics via electron delocalization, as demonstrated by a judicious combination of electro-kinetic analysis, in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) computations. As expected, the batteries based on a SA-Co/NGM modified separator achieve an ultrahigh rate capability, exceptionally long cycle life and a distinguished favorable areal capacity under high sulfur loading. This work provides a rational design of single-atom catalysts for kinetics-boosted electrocatalysis towards long-lasting Li-S batteries.

Polysulfide polyurethane-urea(PSPU)-based self-healing dielectric composites with poly-dopamine and KH550 chemically modified carbon nanotubes

Guochao Zhuang,Jingwen Wang,Jianbao Yang,Yingjie Ma,Yang Zhang,Houqing Wang,Guangbin Ji

In this work, polysulfide polyurethane-urea (PSPU) elastomers with dynamic disulfide bonds introduced into both the soft and hard segments were synthesized. Carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNT) modified with poly-dopamine and KH550 (KPCNT) were used as fillers, and an approach of solution casting was adopted to fabricate the composite films (named KPCNT/PSPU). In addition, the self-healing efficiency of KPCNT/PSPU composites is improved to 98%. The percolation threshold ( f c ) of KPCNT/PSPU (5.11 vol%) is about twice that of unmodified CNT/PSPU composite film (2.69 vol%). The dielectric constant of 4.74 vol% KPCNT/PSPU at 100 Hz is 141, about 23 times that of PSPU, as well as maintaining a low dielectric loss of 0.17. Furthermore, the CNT/PSPU composite with 2.45 vol% CNT has a dielectric constant of 82 at 100 Hz, while reaching a high dielectric loss of 0.72. It can be concluded that the excellent dielectric properties come from the micro-capacitor effect, interfacial polarization, the exchange of hydrogen-bonding networks as well as disulfide bonds within the PSPU.

Vanadium dioxide–reduced graphene oxide binary host as an efficient polysulfide plague for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Sha Li,Yuan Cen,Qin Xiang,Muhammad Kashif Aslam,Bingbing Hu,Wei Li,Ya Tang,Qi Yu,Yuping Liu,Changguo Chen

Lithium–sulfur batteries are strongly expected to be the next-generation energy storage technology due to their superior theoretical specific capacity and energy density. However, the low conductivity of sulfur and the discharge species (Li2S2, Li2S), the “shuttle” issue of soluble intermediates, and the large volume change hinder their further practical application. In this study, vanadium dioxide (VO2) was successfully grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) surface via a one-step rapid and facile solvothermal method, and named as the VO2@rGO binary host. In this structure, the VO2 nanoflakes displayed intensive chemical adsorption for polar lithium polysulfide species (LiPSs), accelerating the conversion of long-chain LiPSs to Li2S2/Li2S discharge products and thus suppressing the shuttling of soluble LiPSs. Additionally, rGO could ensure good electronic conductivity of the sulfur cathode and significantly enhanced the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Particularly, the VO2@rGO/S cathode demonstrated a high initial discharge capacity of 1358 mA h g−1 at 0.2C and retained a stable cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 1049 mA h g−1 over 370 cycles (low capacity decay of 0.06% per cycle). Such excellent performance revealed its good potential for use in advanced lithium–sulfur batteries.

Fabricating ultrathin ZrB2/Graphene oxide/carboxymethocel layer onto cathode as effective polysulfide shuttling barrier for Li–S battery

Yang Wang,Jingyun Huang,Jianguo Lu,Bin Lu,Zhizhen Ye

The shuttling effect of soluble polysulfide in electrolyte has been the major obstacle resulting in the poor cycling stability of Li–S battery. The ultrathin ZrB 2 /graphene oxide/carboxymethocel (ZrB 2 /GO/CMC) layer coated onto cathode via simple doctor blade method has been developed as the effective polysulfide shuttling barrier. Owing to typical 2D scaffold and abundant functional oxygen groups, the GO can provide physical defender as well as chemical trap against polysulfide shuttling. The introduction of conductive ZrB 2 nanoparticles in the hybrid layer can not only improve the conductivity of hybrid layer dramatically reducing electrochemical polarization of Li–S battery without adding other conductive agent but also further form chemical shield by chemisorption which is firstly confirmed by experimental and theoretical calculations. Combining these merits, the ultrathin ZrB 2 /GO/CMC hybrid layer combining with CNT@S hybrid cathode enables the Li–S battery to achieve good rate performance (769 mAh g −1  at a rate of 2 C) and stable cycling capability (with a low capacity decay rate of 0.098% during 300 cycles at 1 C). Specifically, the Li–S battery shows the potential of practical application, with high areal S loading of 5.1 mg cm −2 , delivering the capacity near-commercial lithium-ion battery.

Covalent Coupled Sulfur-Deficient MoS2 Nanosheets on Carbon Nanotubes toward Polysulfide Catalytic Conversion in a Lithium Sulfur Battery

Yuanyuan Li,Qing Yan,Juan Zhu,Yongyuan Ren,Quan Liu,Yang Hou,Jianguo Lu,Xiang Gao,Xiaoli Zhan,Qinghua Zhang

The lithium sulfur battery is an attractive energy storage device because of its high theoretical capacity and energy density, but its lifetime is seriously limited by the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Herein, a rational design of vertical MoS2 nanosheets anchored on conductive carbon nanotubes through Mo–O–C covalent coupling is proposed. In this composite, the strong chemical interaction ensures rapid charge transfer at interfaces, while the sulfur-deficient and metallic 1T phase-containing MoS2 enhances the affinity with polysulfides and accelerates the reaction kinetics of polysulfide conversion. Benefitting from these merits, the composite serves as a coating layer on the separator in the lithium sulfur battery, leading to the impressive electrochemical performance of the initial capacities of 1291 mA h g–1 at 0.5 C and 1330 mA h g–1 at 0.2 C. The battery also shows an enhanced cycling stability with a low capacity fading rate of 0.089% per cycle after 500 cycles at 0.5 C.

Dynamic Disulfide Bonds Contained Covalent Organic Framework Modified Separator as Efficient Inhibit Polysulfide Shuttling in Li–S Batteries

Mengke Li,Gaojie Yan,Peng Zou,Haifeng Ji,Han Wang,Zongjie Hu,Zhipeng Yang,Yi Feng,Haijie Ben,Xiaojie Zhang

First, a new covalent organic framework (HUT9) with disulfide bonds have been synthesized, which can be grown in situ on carbon nanotubes (CNT) as separator modification material for Li–S batteries. Experiments and DFT showed that disulfide bond could effectively capture soluble polysulfides (LiPSs) during discharge process, while promoting the conversion of LiPSs to Li2S/Li2S2 and improve the utilization rate of sulfur. The polar groups of the covalent organic framework provide chemisorption, and an interwoven network of HUT9@CNT (physical constraints) cooperates to inhibit the transport of LiPSs. The modified battery has a capacity retention rate of 83% (decay rate of 0.032% per cycle) after 500 cycles at 1 C. Specifically, the battery with 2-HUT9@CNT modified separators (sulfur loading: 4 mg cm–2, sulfur content: 80%, electrolyte/sulfur ratio: 10 mL g–1) can reach 3.4 mAh cm–2 area capacity after 50 cycles. This work enriched the COF material system and provided guidance for the application of organic materials in an energy storage system.

Metastable marcasite NiSe2 nanodendrites on carbon fiber clothes to suppress polysulfide shuttling for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Jingwen Wang,Shoufu Cao,Likun Yang,Yan Zhang,Kun Xing,Xiaoqing Lu,Jun Xu

The incorporation of catalytic components is a promising strategy to promote redox reaction kinetics and suppress polysulfide shuttling for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this work, metastable marcasite NiSe2 nanodendrites grown on carbon fiber clothes (m-NiSe2/CFC) were synthesized to improve chemical adsorption and electrocatalytic activity towards lithium polysulfides. The multifunctional m-NiSe2/CFC film was utilized as both the interlayer and the three-dimensional (3D) current collector in LSBs. In comparison with the stable pyrite NiSe2 nanodendrite–covered CFC (p-NiSe2/CFC) counterpart, the m-NiSe2/CFC film exhibits even stronger chemisorption, higher catalytic activity and faster reaction kinetics, thereby resulting in significantly improved lithium storage performance. The Al@S/rGO@m-NiSe2/CFC cell has a high reversible capacity of 1646 mA h g−1 at 0.2C, a high QL/QH ratio of 3.00 at 0.2C, a high rate capability of 900 mA h g−1 at 4C, and an outstanding cyclic stability exhibiting a low capacity decay of 0.028% per cycle for 600 cycles at 4C. Moreover, a symmetrically sandwiched cathode of m-NiSe2/CFC@S/rGO@m-NiSe2/CFC was designed for high sulfur loading LSBs (4.5 mg cm−2) with superior electrochemical performance of 3.73 mA h cm−2 after 100 cycles at 1C rate. Our work opens up a new opportunity to enhance the electrochemical performance of LSBs by phase engineering of NiSe2 catalysts in sandwiched structural cathodes.

Poly(ionic liquid)-Based Conductive Interlayer as an Efficient Polysulfide Adsorbent for a Highly Stable Lithium–Sulfur Battery

Yin Hu,Ji Pan,Qi Li,Yongyuan Ren,Haojun Qi,Jiangna Guo,Zhe Sun,Feng Yan

Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries with exceptional theoretical capacities and environmentally friendly characteristics have been investigated as next-generation energy storage devices. However, the dissolution and diffusion of polysulfide result in a rapid capacity degeneration, which hinders their practical application. Here, poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-based core–shell structured nanofibers, poly(pyrrole)@poly(ionic liquid)–polyacrylonitrile (PPy@PIL–PAN), were prepared via electrospinning and followed by a surface polymerization of pyrrole. The as-prepared PPy@PIL–PAN nanofibers were implemented as a functional interlayer for Li-S batteries, and it is found that the cationic poly(ionic liquid) framework could selectively adsorb polysulfide species in the electrolytes, contributing to effective shuttle inhibition as well as stable sulfur electrochemistry. Moreover, this work sheds light on an efficient approach to improving the performance of Li-S batteries by using PIL-based functional interlayers.
