In polar environments, the presence of ice on the surfaces of ships and instruments can lead to equipment failure, an unstable center of gravity, and pose hazards to operators. To mitigate the damage caused by both icing and corrosion, this paper aims to investigate a corrosion-resistant photothermal deicing coating material. The coating matrix utilizes a low-viscosity epoxy resin system, while the additives include polypyrrole (PPy) with excellent photothermal conversion capability and corrosion resistance, along with graphene oxide (GO)-modified nano-silica. By carefully controlling the ratio, a composite coating is formulated with both anti-corrosion and photothermal deicing abilities under light conditions. The results demonstrate that under simulated sunlight irradiation, the surface temperature of the coating at different proportions can rise to over 80 ℃ within 10 min, with the highest temperature reaching 84.9 ℃. The optimal proportion of the coating remains unfrozen at -15 ℃, exhibiting an icing delay time of 710 s, and the frozen droplets melt within 5 s. Additionally, the coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, contributing to a more effective protection of metal surfaces. Therefore, this type of photothermal anticorrosive coating holds significant potential for widespread application in polar environments.

The escalating severity of environmental pollution from oil spills and chemical leaks necessitates the development of efficient, durable, and environmentally adaptable oil-water separation materials. In this study, we introduce a novel thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique to fabricate superelastic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/silica nanowires (SiO 2 NWs) hybrid sponges with exceptional superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity for continuous oil absorption. High aspect ratio SiO 2 NWs are uniformly distributed throughout the sponge's skeleton and surface, creating a hierarchical network of micro-nanostructures. Acting as “nano-rebars” akin to steel reinforcements in concrete, the SiO 2 NWs significantly enhance the mechanical strength of the composite while simultaneously improving its surface hydrophobicity. The sponge achieved separation efficiencies of up to 96.69 % for toluene emulsions and 89.85 % for engine oil emulsions, demonstrating its exceptional performance even under challenging conditions. The composite exhibits a water contact angle of 158°, an oil contact angle of 0°, and a 4.9-fold increase in compressive strength compared to pure TPU. Remarkably, it retains superhydrophobicity (>150°) under extreme conditions, including pH 3–11, boiling water (100 °C), baking (200 °C), and 100 cycles of mechanical abrasion. Furthermore, its superior compressibility (80 % strain), fatigue resistance (100 cycles), and reusability make it a promising candidate for large-scale oil-water separation and environmental remediation applications.

According to the escalating concern regarding the health hazards associated with electromagnetic radiation , the significance of absorbing materials underscores which could mitigate the healthy risks. While magnetic materials offer excellent absorption performance, their high density poses challenges to achieving optimal absorption efficiency. Conversely, carbon-based materials are known for their lightweight and versatile but face impedance matching issues. To address these obstacles, carbon/magnetic composite materials have been explored. However, their absorption performance has not fully met requirements due to weaker magnetic properties and increased density. Herein, we synthesized a porous carbon material embedded with magnetic FeNi/NiFe 2 O 4 and dielectric SiO 2 nanoparticles (FeNi-NiFe 2 O 4 -SiO 2 @PC) using carbonthermal method. By adjusting the ratio of polyvinylpyrrolidone to nitrates, the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance is adjusted. The FeNi-NiFe 2 O 4 -SiO 2 @PC composites display remarkable EMW absorption properties, achieving a minimum reflection loss of −69.9 dB at a thin thickness of 1.495 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.68 GHz, covering the range from 12.32 to 18.0 GHz at a thickness of 1.92 mm. This outstanding performance can be attributed to the favorable impedance matching and the three-dimensional porous structure, which facilitates a 3D transmission network for multiple reflections. Additionally, the presence of FeNi, NiFe 2 O 4 , and SiO 2 nanoparticles enhances magnetic loss, conductive loss, interface polarization, and dipolar polarization, leading to excellent ab. Hence, this work offers insights into the composition design of high-performance absorbing materials.

We develop layered MAX (e.g., Ti 3 AlC 2 , Ti 3 AlCN, Ti 2 AlC, Ti 2 AlN) into novel photothermal silica-deposited MAX (MAX@SiO 2 ) composites and coatings for efficient seawater desalination and anti-/de-icing, by combining their strong optical absorbance capacity covering UV-Vis-NIR regions with unique surface wettability. The water evaporator with a unique gradient superhydrophilicity-hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity-superhydrophobicity is achieved by incorporating the as-synthesized hydroxyl- and methyl-modified MAX@SiO 2 composites into porous melamine foam (MF). By combining the unique gradient wettability with porous structure and strong optical absorbance, the proposed MAX@SiO 2 evaporator displays excellent seawater desalination performance with high water evaporation rates of ∼2.19 and 3.45 kg m −2 h −1 under 1.0 and 2.0 sun irradiation, respectively. The photothermal water evaporation efficiency can reach to 91.2 % under 1.0 sun illumination. Besides, by sequential spray-depositing resin-based primer and MAX@SiO 2 top-coat on glass slides and insulators, the as-achieved superhydrophobic (SH) photothermal coatings displayed excellent anti-icing and de-icing performances. The procedures described here enable a convenient and novel strategy to develop micro-nanocomposites and multifunctional coatings with strong photothermal conversion ability, which would shed light on promising potentials in energy conversion and photo-thermal applications including solar freshwater generation, sewage purification, and anti-/de-icing.

The eco-friendly nature and energy efficiency of polymeric membranes have established them as pivotal materials for oil-in-water emulsion separation. However, persistent membrane fouling caused by oil deposition remains a major challenge, significantly hindering their practical implementation in industrial settings. In this work, thiol–ene photochemistry was employed to synthesize PEGylated silica nanoparticles (SiO2-g-PEGDA) using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and hexanedithiol (HD) as monomers. Biomimetic PVDF membranes were engineered via vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) by integrating SiO2-g-PEGDA nanoparticles, followed by secondary coagulation in a dopamine (DA) solution. The experimental results demonstrate that the biomimetic membranes exhibit a characteristic sponge-like cross-sectional morphology and well-defined rough surface microstructures, which are attributed to the synergistic roles of SiO2-g-PEGDA as nanofillers and DA as interfacial cross-linker during secondary phase separation. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm that the combined action of nanoparticles and PDA significantly increases the density of hydrophilic functional groups on membrane surfaces and within pore channels. The membranes exhibit excellent hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, achieving an outstanding emulsion flux of 3537 Lm–2 h–1 bar–1 and an oil removal efficiency of 98.5%. After 15 cycles of oil–water separation, the membranes maintain a high flux recovery rate of 85.6%. Moreover, the biomimetic membranes possess exceptional operational stability, as evidenced by consistent surface wettability under organic solvents, strong acid and high-salinity conditions.

Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) stands out as a renowned commercial conducting polymer composite, boasting extensive and promising applications in the realm of film electronics. In this study, we have made a concerted effort to overcome the inherent drawbacks of PEDOT:PSS films (especially, high moisture absorption, mechanical damage vulnerability, insufficient substrate adhesion ability, etc.) by uniformly blending them with polydimethylsiloxane polyurea (PDMS-PUa) and silica (SiO2) nanoparticles through a feasible mechanical stirring process, which effectively harnesses the intermolecular interactions, as well as the morphological and structural characteristics, among the various components. The Si−O bonds within PDMS-PUa and the −CH3groups attached to Si atoms significantly enhance the hydrophobicity of the composite film (as evidenced by a water contact angle of 132.89° under optimized component ratios). Meanwhile, SiO2microscopically modifies the surface morphology, resulting in increased surface roughness. This composite film not only maintains high conductivity (1.21 S/cm, in contrast to 0.83 S/cm for the PEDOT:PSS film) but also preserves its hydrophobicity and electrical properties under rigorous conditions, including high-temperature exposure (60–200 °C), ultraviolet (UV) aging (365.0 nm, 1.32 mW/cm2), and abradability testing (2000 CW abrasive paper, drag force of approximately 0.98 N, 40 cycles). Furthermore, the film demonstrates enhanced resistance to both acidic (1 mol/L, 24 h) and alkaline (1 mol/L, 24 h) environments, along with excellent self-cleaning and de-icing capabilities (−6 °C), and satisfactory adhesion (Level 2). Notably, the dried composite film can be re-dispersed into a solution with the aid of isopropanol through simple magnetic stirring, and the sequentially coated films also exhibit good surface hydrophobicity (136.49°), equivalent to that of the pristine film. This research aims to overcome the intrinsic performance drawbacks of PEDOT:PSS-based materials, enabling them to meet the demands of complex application scenarios in the field of organic electronics while endowing them with multifunctionality.

Oxide ceramic aerogels, one of the most important aerogels, hold significant application promise in thermal insulation and protection. However, their low strength, long preparation cycle, and supercritical drying dependence hinder their widespread use. In this study, we proposed a hybrid interpenetrating network strategy and prepared a hybrid Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 aerogel (PAS) via ambient pressure drying. The structures, mechanical properties, thermal insulation performance, and mechanisms of PAS were systematically investigated. PAS exhibited remarkably low drying linear shrinkage (6.08%), substantially compressive strength (8.05 MPa), and impressive strain capacity (45%). Furthermore, PAS demonstrated exceptional thermal insulation (0.039 W/m·K at 25°C) and high-temperature structural stability. Mechanistic studies revealed that the hybrid interpenetrating network significantly reinforced the Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 network, and inhibited the phase transition of Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 in high-temperature. This study provides a reproducible approach for the rapid preparation of high-strength, low-thermal conductivity oxide ceramic aerogels and demonstrates its promising application potential in thermal protection.

SiO 2 -based ceramics are an ideal material for manufacturing radomes due to their thermal stability, high dielectric properties, and simple processing techniques. However, traditional manufacturing methods heavily rely on molds, making it difficult to form complex SiO 2 -based ceramic structures. Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology was applied to fabricate SiO 2 -based ceramics doped with Al 2 O 3 -MgO in this work. The influence of the Al 2 O 3 -MgO content on the SiO 2 -based ceramics was systematically investigated. Increasing Al 2 O 3 -MgO content causes a shrinkage to first decrease then increase, contrasting with the flexural strength's initial increase and subsequent decrease. The main reason is magnesium-aluminum spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ) generated during the sintering process and thus retards crack propagation, promoting a transition in fracture mode. During the fracture stage, the fracture mode of samples with 10.0 wt% Al 2 O 3 -MgO is mainly transgranular fracture, instead of intergranular. This transition in fracture mode enhanced the flexural strength. Meanwhile, as the Al 2 O 3 -MgO content continues to increase, excessive spinel causes agglomeration within the ceramic microstructure. When the Al 2 O 3 -MgO content reached 10.0 wt%, the shrinkage decreases to a minimum of 3.32 %, and the flexural strength increases to a maximum of 15.94 MPa, making it suitable for manufacturing ceramic radomes. The research results provide a new solution for manufacturing SiO 2 -based ceramic radomes by DLP.

The conservation of sandstone cultural relics has gained increasing attention due to their scarcity, historical and cultural value. However, they exhibit a vulnerability that must endure degradation caused by prolonged outdoor exposure, particularly the hazards caused by water infiltration. Herein, we have designed and developed a hydrophobic composite coating for safeguarding outdoor-exposed sandstone relics. The coating has integrated the silica nanoparticles modified by perfluorodecyl triethoxysilane (FAS-17) with fluorinated resin and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to achieve waterproofing for outdoor-exposed sandstone. The protective effect of the coating has been systematically evaluated through water contact angle (WCA) measurements under various environmental tolerances such as acid rain resistance, mechanical bearing capacity, and adaptability for wide temperature range adaptability (-20 ℃ and 80 ℃). The tested results demonstrate that the coating on sandstone shows superhydrophobic ability and stability. For example, the coating exhibits exceptional hydrophobicity (WCA > 150°) and self-cleaning properties after various accelerated aging cycles such as under acidic rain, mechanical peeling, sand impact, high and low temperature environments. Importantly, the coating on sandstone can preserve the inherent permeability of sandstone substrates while providing robust interfacial adhesion. These outcomes highlight the potential of the FAS-SiO 2 based composite coating as a durable and compatible coating for mitigating outdoor environment-induced deterioration in sandstone cultural heritage conservation.

Functional materials represented by calcined layered double hydroxide (CLDH), nano-silica (SiO 2 ), and microcapsules are frequently incorporated into cement-based composites to accelerate cement hydration or autonomously heal matrix microcracks, thereby enhancing the chloride-binding quantity and inhibition performance of cementitious system. In this work, CLDH and SiO 2 were employed to target modify microcapsules (CLDH/SiO 2 -MC), aiming to achieve the functional coupling effects of three materials. The study revealed that CLDH and SiO 2 were successfully anchored within the microcapsule wall and improved the surface roughness of modified microcapsules. The targeted modification strategy is beneficial to improve the interfacial bonding between microcapsules and cement paste. Interestingly, the alkaline pore solution induced the hydration reaction of active SiO 2 component within the surface of modified microcapsules. Compared with the reference group, cement paste specimens incorporating 3 % and 6 % microcapsule demonstrated 30.76 % and 53.85 % enhancements in chloride binding capacity, respectively. The D RCM values of cement mortar with CLDH/SiO 2 -MC additions of 0 %, 3 %, 6 %, and 9 % were 19.95, 14.63, 17.00, and 19.52 × 10 −12 m 2 /s, respectively. The synergistic corrosion inhibition effects of microcapsules resulted in higher R ct value of steel electrode, and the highest inhibition efficiency of CLDH/SiO 2 -MC was 97.84 %. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the charge exchange capacity between CLDH/SiO 2 and ethyl cellulose is 2.36 e – , with metal atoms serving as electron donors. The CLDH/SiO 2 targeted modified microcapsules achieved synergistic corrosion inhibition through self-healing of the core, chloride binding and pozzolanic activity of the wall, which is helpful to realize the sustainable development of steels.

Oily dyeing wastewater poses significant environmental hazards and therefore requires effective treatment. Although electrospun fiber membranes (EFMs) have been employed for oily dyeing wastewater treatment, conventional approaches typically involve a two-step process. This study presents a novel single-step modification method for EFMs, enabling efficient treatment of oily dyeing wastewater through a simplified single-membrane separation process. Experimental results demonstrated that spontaneous self-assembly occurs between ethyl cellulose (EC) colloids and hydrophilic SiO₂ nanoparticles in mixed solutions. Furthermore, these self-assembled colloids can undergo liquid-phase-induced self-organization on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun fiber membranes (EFMs), leading to a "welding" effect that firmly immobilizes both EC and hydrophilic SiO₂ nanoparticles onto the PAN fibers. The self-assembly process effectively prevented the agglomeration of SiO₂ nanoparticles, resulting in their uniform and stable fixation on the PAN fibers. Compared to the pristine PAN EFM, the PAN-EC-SiO₂ EFM exhibited significantly enhanced tensile strength, pH tolerance, surface roughness, hydrophilicity, hydration capacity, and methylene blue adsorption performance. Consequently, this modified membrane demonstrated dual functionality, effectively separating both oil-water emulsions and oily dyeing wastewater. During oily dyeing wastewater treatment, the PAN-EC-SiO₂ EFM achieved a methylene blue rejection rate of 92 %, an oil separation efficiency of 97.2 %, and a high flux of 153 L/m²·h.

The separator serves as a critical component in guaranteeing the electrochemical safety and operational reliability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The aramid nanofiber (ANF) membrane-based separator is seen as a promising element for next-generation high-performance LIBs separators. However, the short-range intermolecular interactions within the network of ANFs lead to a highly entangled, extremely dense structure and a lack of porosity. In this study, a novel organic-inorganic separator was prepared in-situ by anchoring well-dispersed SiO 2 nanoparticles on the surface of ANFs. The diameter of the ANFs was reduced by retarding their oriented aggregation with SiO 2 , thereby effectively enhancing the porosity of the separator. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of the hybrid separators were significantly improved by the incorporation of SiO 2 ; moreover, the growth of Li dendrites on the anode surface was effectively suppressed compared with the pure ANFs and the commercial PP separators. The assembled LiFePO 4 /Li battery exhibits exceptional rate capability and stable cycling performance. The ANFs hybrid separator holds great potential as a candidate for high-performance LIBs.
