Bacterial infections represent one of the foremost threats to global human health. Furthermore, the misuse of antibiotics has exacerbated the public health crisis. Therefore, the development of high-performance novel antibacterial materials is of utmost importance. However, there are still several issues regarding the antibacterial performance and recyclability of existing antibacterial materials. To address these issues, this study synthesized a core@shell@shell@satellite structured Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @polydopamine (PDA)@tannic acid (TA)@Ag nanocomposite, aiming to achieve excellent photothermal effect and synergistic antibacterial activity with silver. The composite particles exhibited improved dispersibility due to the SiO 2 coating. The modification of TA on the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @PDA achieved the uniform loading of silver nanoparticles (NPs), which significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency (η) of up to 74.9 %. Additionally, the superparamagnetic property facilitated magnetic separation, ensuring the efficient recovery and reutilization of the nanocomposites. Under low concentration and low-power near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation (808 nm, 1.0 W cm −2 ), the nanocomposite demonstrated excellent synergistic antibacterial activity, achieving efficient eradication of Escherichia coli (100 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (98 %). Furthermore, the material could be recycled up to five times without significant loss of antibacterial activity. Overall, our approach demonstrates the potential of novel multifunctional composite NPs in the treatment of bacterial infections and the sustainable application of antibacterial agents.

CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) have been recognized as potential optoelectronic materials due to their excellent optical characteristics. However, their poor stability limits their further practical application, and research on their stability improvement mainly concentrated on green-emitted CsPbBr3 PNCs. Herein, high-stable red, green, and blue three-primary color CsPbX3-nanocrystal/SiO2 (PNC/SiO2) luminescent composites have been synthesized by a simple high-temperature melt-crystallization method, which did not use any solvent or ligand. The sintering conditions for PNC/SiO2 composites were optimized according to the X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, which ensured the composite structures and achieved higher PL quantum yield. The optimized red, green, and blue composites can remain at 99%, 90%, and 82% PL intensity after 15 heating loops, performing good thermal stability. To check the application potential, the optimized composites were fabricated as red, green, and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), showing high color purity to consist of a wide color gamut. The red, green, and blue LEDs remained at 83%, 82%, and 96% emission intensity and kept their color coordinates after a long working duration, showing excellent stability. The excellent stability and relatively higher color purity of the PNC/SiO2 composites indicate their great potential for commercial background display applications.

In recent years, the fabrication of amorphous photonic crystals (APCs) structural colors on fabrics has become a research hotspot in the field of textile coloring. However, the preparation of APCs structural colored fabrics usually requires the use of black fabric as a substrate or the addition of black material for co-assembly, which greatly limits the practical application. In this study, SiO 2 @PPy composite microspheres with different particle diameters were prepared as building units and deposited on white polyester fabric pre-treated with polyacrylate (PA) by atomization to form vivid structural colors. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as superhydrophobic agent to treat SiO 2 @PPy structural colored fabrics by spraying method. The results showed that SiO 2 @PPy composite microspheres with different particle diameters were prepared, which can be assembled into APCs structure on white polyester fabrics, showing different vivid structural colors. The water contact angle of structural colored fabric after PDMS treatment reached greater than 150°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity to endow it with anti-fouling property. With the introduction of PA adhesive, the structural colored fabrics had good washing and abrasion colorfastness. This study provides a new strategy for developing functional structural colored fabrics on white textile substrates.

Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have promising application in display lighting, environmental monitoring, and information encryption. In this study, a series of RTP halogen doped carbon dots/SiO 2 composites (RTP X-CDs/SiO 2 , X = F, Cl, Br, I) with long lifetime and tunable particle size were successfully prepared by two-step process involving solvothermal and calcination. The effects of various halogen dopants on the phosphorescence properties and morphologies of the RTP X-CDs/SiO 2 composites were thoroughly investigated. Among them, RTP F-CDs/SiO 2 exhibit an ultra-long lifetime of 1.28 s, a phosphorescence quantum yield of 19.76 %, and remarkable stability against temperature variations, acid and alkali conditions, and exposure to polar solvents. Therefore, RTP F-CDs/SiO 2 were further incorporated into silicone resin to fabricate phosphorescent films, and optical and hydrophobic properties of films with varying RTP F-CDs/SiO 2 mass fractions (2.5 %–15.0 %) were systematically explored. The films demonstrate excellent fluorescence and RTP performance, highlighting their potential for advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Bayan Obo tailings are rich in niobium and other valuable elements; however, the phase evolution of niobium-bearing slag within these tailings remains poorly understood. This knowledge gap significantly impedes comprehensive utilization of these strategic resources. In this study, a CaO-SiO 2 -Nb 2 O 5 -5%Na 2 O-5%Al 2 O 3 -3%CaF 2 slag system was investigated to examine the phase equilibrium types, compositional characteristics, and distributional evolution under varying w (CaO)/ w (SiO 2 ) ratios and w (Nb 2 O 5 ) contents, using high-temperature equilibrium experiments. Following a 24-hour high-temperature equilibrium treatment at 1473 K under an argon atmosphere, a range of compounds including 13CaO·8SiO 2 ·Nb 2 O 5 ·CaF 2 , 2CaO·4SiO 2 ·Na 2 O·Al 2 O 3 , CaO·Nb 2 O 5 ·NaF, 2CaO·Nb 2 O 5 , and CaO·SiO 2 were identified. An increase in Nb 2 O 5 content coupled with a reduction in the w (CaO)/ w (SiO 2 ) ratio favored the formation of CaO·Nb 2 O 5 ·NaF (pyrochlore phase) and 2CaO·Nb 2 O 5 . These two phases exhibited high Nb concentrations, with the CaO·Nb 2 O 5 ·NaF (pyrochlore) phase containing up to approximately 70% Nb. The optimal smelting conditions for niobium enrichment in the pyrochlore phase were identified within the range of w (CaO)/ w (SiO 2 ) = 0.74∼0.80 and w (Nb 2 O 5 ) = 13.61%∼16.11%.

Marine biofouling poses many hazards to human activities. The introduction of zwitterionic agents as green and sustainable antibacterial agents into antifouling coatings exhibits excellent performance. In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and deacetylated chitin nanofibers (DECHNs) were cross-linked through electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic SiO2 was used as the coating curing agent to prepare CNC/DECHN@SiO2 zwitterionic marine antifouling coatings. The results showed that when the proportion of CNCs components was 50%, the coating exhibited a 93% antibacterial rate and an 88% antialgae rate. In actual marine environment testing, the comprehensive resistance to marine biofouling reached 93% within 60 days. Our research introduces two natural components with opposite charges to construct zwitterionic complexes, innovatively applying them directly as antifouling agents in coatings. This work not only provides a solution for replacing toxic antifouling agents but also offers new ideas for using zwitterionic polymers directly as antifouling agents.

Aqueous emulsion polymerization prepared a nano-SiO 2 polyacrylate fluorine-free anti-fouling finishing agent in this study. The finishing agent was prepared by copolymerizing nano-SiO 2 modified by KH-570 silane coupling agent with 3-[Tris(trimethylsilyloxy)silyl]propyl methacrylate (M3T) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA). The polymer emulsion has a uniform particle size distribution and can meet the use temperature below 160 °C. It also has good stability under solid acid/alkali conditions. The prepared anti-fouling finishing agent was applied to the cotton fabric by a two-dip and two-roll finishing process, and a polymer film containing nanoparticles can form on the surface of the cotton fiber. The experimental results showed that the finished cotton fabric’s apparent roughness increases, making it superhydrophobic. The water contact angle of the finished cotton fabric is 159 °, and it is still not lower than 150 ° after 10 washing cycles and 50 abrasion cycles. At the same time, it also has an excellent water-repellent function, and the spray test score reaches 100 (iSO-5). In addition, the coffee grounds sprinkled on the surface of the finished cotton fabric can roll off with the droplets, showing its self-cleaning ability. Most importantly, it has a specific anti-vegetable oil function because common vegetable oil can stay on its surface for 5 min without thoroughly wetting. It is worth noting that the preparation process is economical, environmentally friendly, and fluorine-free.

Abstract The composites (SiO 2 /HATP) were prepared by condensation reflux and high-temperature calcination using natural attapulgite and silica particles, and it was utilized for the adsorption of toluene. The physicochemical properties of the composite adsorbents were characterized using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and BET techniques. The SiO 2 /HATP composite material was successfully prepared, with silica particles uniformly loaded onto the surface of ATP. The adsorption performance of the composite materials for toluene was investigated using different feed ratios. The results showed that the composite materials with the mass ratio SiO 2 /ATP equal to 4 exhibited the highest static adsorption capacity for toluene, reaching 236 mg/g. Additionally, dynamic adsorption performance of toluene was evaluated under conditions of 0 and 80% relative humidity, with corresponding breakthrough times of 90 and 36 min, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the composite materials for toluene was 6–8 times higher than that of pure attapulgite clay. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of the composite materials were investigated through adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and adsorption thermodynamics. The results indicated that the adsorption of toluene by the composite materials followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, suggesting a spontaneous exothermic physical adsorption process at a monolayer level. Moreover, regeneration experiments were conducted, and after 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption tests, the composite materials maintained a penetration time of 85 and 30 min for toluene under conditions of 0 and 80% relative humidity, respectively, demonstrating good recyclability.

Porosity is a characteristic feature of atmospheric plasma–sprayed (APS) coatings that strongly influences their physical and functional properties. However, studies on its effect on the electromagnetic (EM) performance and high-temperature stability of microwave-absorbing coatings (MACs) remain limited. In this work, FeSiAl/CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 composite coatings with different porosities were fabricated by adjusting powder feed rate (PFR). Microstructural evolution, EM properties, and isothermal oxidation behavior of prepared composite coatings were systematically investigated. Results show that increasing PFR reduces the extent to which particles are melted, leading to higher porosity due to the retention of unmelted particles. The increased porosity disrupted local conductive networks, altered the complex permittivity and permeability, and lowered the bonding strength of the coatings. Moreover, pores and cracks facilitated oxygen diffusion, accelerating oxidation and crack propagation at elevated temperatures. After high-temperature oxidation, the decrease in complex permittivity improved impedance matching and broadened the absorption bandwidth. These findings provide new insights into microstructure–property relationships of APS-deposited MACs and offer a strategy for tailoring the coating porosity to simultaneously optimize their EM absorption performance and high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Owing to their cost-effectiveness and high efficiency, solid amine adsorbents derived from solid waste are deemed highly promising for CO 2 capture. Nevertheless, traditional solid waste-based adsorbents are predominantly limited by their uniform pores structure, which significantly hampers the kinetics of CO 2 adsorption-desorption. In this study, we innovatively introduce an efficient method for recovering Si elements via alkali leaching and subsequently synthesize hierarchical porous SiO 2 through gas-phase-assisted precipitation and self-assembly, forming a distinctive "lamellar-spherical stacking structure". This unique hierarchical porous architecture enables the efficient incorporation of pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) organic amines, thereby minimizing pore blockage due to amine functionalization and alleviating mass transfer resistance during adsorption and desorption. The resultant solid amine-functionalized hierarchical porous structures exhibit a CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.815 mmol/g at 70 °C and maintain remarkable stability over 10 cyclic tests. Thus, the rational design of pore effects and functionalized molecular configurations synergistically enhances the CO 2 adsorption capacity in flue gas and stability, offering robust technical support for the application of solid amine CO 2 adsorbents.

Epoxy resin (EP) adhesive performance is critical for the glass fiber-reinforced composites (GFRP) in the Membrane-Type liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo containment systems (CCS). In this work, the polyurethane-modified epoxy resin (EPU) and Nano-SiO 2 were introduced into EP to develop a resin system with enhanced bonding strength and durability for bonding glass fiber and aluminum foil. The results demonstrated that the peel strength of the EP/EPU50/2 wt.% Nano-SiO 2 -GF reached 3.78 kN m −1 at room temperature (RT), which was approximately 172% higher than that of EP-GF (1.39 kN m −1 ). Even at −190°C, the peel strength remained 2.66 kN m −1 . The continuous flexible polyurethane phase dissipated mechanical energy through chain extension and hydrogen bonding, while the Nano-SiO 2 improved the crack propagation resistance, thus enhancing adhesion. In addition, after 30 days of exposure to ultra-low temperature (−196°C) and 40 thermal cycles, the peel strength of EP/EPU50/2 wt.% Nano-SiO 2 -GF at RT still reached 2.92 kN m −1 and 3.53 kN m −1 , respectively. SEM analysis revealed that ultra-low temperature could induce interfacial debonding between the resin layer and aluminum foil. The transition of failure mode from cohesive failure to adhesive failure was the main reason for the decrease in peel strength.

Intelligently responsive super-wetting coatings have garnered significant attention for their ability to modulate wettability in response to environmental stimuli, enabling efficient oil/water separation. This study presents a novel pH-responsive super-wetting coating fabricated via a simple, cost-effective sol-gel and dip-coating approach on cotton fabric. The coating combines low-surface-energy dodecyl trimethoxysilane (DTMS) with pH-sensitive 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) modified SiO 2 nanoparticles. The coating's structure, morphology, and properties were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements (WCA). Compared to existing pH-responsive systems, this coating exhibits superior switching speed: it transitions rapidly from superhydrophobicity (WCA > 150° at pH 7) to superhydrophilicity (WCA decreases from 50.24° to 0° within 20 s at pH 1) and reversibly back to superhydrophobicity (WCA = 163° at pH 13). The coating demonstrates excellent stability in various salt solutions (NaCl, KCl, KNO 3 ) and under ultrasonic washing, ensuring robustness in complex aqueous environments. Leveraging this reversible wettability switching, the coating achieves high separation efficiencies for both high-density (98.5 %) and low-density (96 %) oil/water mixtures. Critically, this fabrication strategy eliminates the need for expensive, environmentally hazardous heavy metals (e.g., Ag, Au, Cu) or complex polymerization processes commonly employed in other smart separation materials. The combination of rapid switching, environmental and economic friendliness, salt resistance, durability, and high separation performance underscores the significant potential of this coating for diverse practical oil/water separation applications.
