Introducing light energy into the charging/discharging process is an effective strategy to reduce the overpotential of Li−O 2 battery, which leads that the battery has higher energy conversion efficiency and better battery performance. However, the development has been hampered by the lack of suitable photocatalysts and cathode structure to accommodate the insoluble Li 2 O 2 . In order to overcome the aforementioned difficulties, a bifunctional photocatalyst α-Fe 2 O 3 /SnO 2 (FS) heterojunction was designed as the cathode to improve the charging/discharging overpotentials simultaneously. The photogenerated electrons and holes from FS participated in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen revolution reaction (OER) under illumination, giving rise to an ultra-low charging/discharging overpotential of 0.01 V (energy efficiency up to 99.7%), which improved the electrochemical reaction kinetics of the Li−O 2 battery strikingly. In addition, the FS cathode exhibited excellent cycle stability under light (the battery energy efficiency can still maintain 80% after 252 cycles). The bifunctional catalyst designed in this paper has profoundly proved that the band engineering strategy can effectively utilize solar energy and provide important insights for understanding the mechanism of photo-assisted Li−O 2 battery.

In this study, the catalytic performance of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (nα-Fe 2 O 3 ) in the low-dose ferrate (Fe(VI)) system was systematically studied through the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Based on the established quadratic functions between nα-Fe 2 O 3 amount and observed pseudo first-order rate constant ( k obs ), two linear correlation equations were offered to predict the optimum catalyst dosage and the maximum k obs at an applied Fe(VI) amount. Moreover, characterization and cycling experiments showed that nα-Fe 2 O 3 has good stability and recyclability . According to the results of reactive species identification and quenching experiment and galvanic oxidation process , the catalytic mechanism was proposed that Fe(III) on the surface of nα-Fe 2 O 3 may react with Fe(VI) to enhance the generation of highly reactive Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species, which rapidly extracted a single electron from PCP molecule for its further reaction. Besides, two possible PCP degradation pathways, i.e., single oxygen transfer mediated hydroxylation and single electron transfer initiated polymerization were proposed. The formation of coupling products that are prone to precipition and separation was largely improved. This study proved that nα-Fe 2 O 3 can effectively catalyze PCP removal at low-dose Fe(VI), which provides some support for the application of Fe(VI) oxidation technology in water treatment in the context of low-carbon emissions.

Superwetting materials have drawn unprecedented attention in the treatment of oily wastewater due to their preferable anti-fouling property and selective oil/water separation. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and environmentally friendly materials, which can be stably applied to purify the actual complicated wastewater. Here, a Ag/α-Fe 2 O 3 heterostructure anchored copper mesh was intentionally synthesized using a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The resultant mesh with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity was capable of separating various oil/water mixtures with superior separation efficiency and high permeation flux driven by gravity. Benefiting from the joint effects of the smaller band gap of Ag/α-Fe 2 O 3 heterojunction, inherent antibacterial capacity of α-Fe 2 O 3 and Ag nanoparticles, favorable conductive substrate, as well as the hierarchical structure with superwettability, such mesh presented remarkably enhanced degradation capability toward organic dyes under visible light irradiation and antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) compared with the pure α-Fe 2 O 3 coated mesh. Impressively, the mesh exhibited bifunctional water purification performance, in which organic dyes were eliminated simultaneously from water during oil/water separation in one filtration process. More importantly, this mesh behaved exceptional chemical resistance, mechanical stability and long-term reusability. Therefore, this material with multifunctional integration may hold promising potential for steady water purification in practice.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), presenting spatial and temporal control of ROS generation triggered by ultrasound field, has attracted considerable attention in tumor treatment. However, its therapeutic efficacy is severely hindered by the intrinsic hypoxia of solid tumor and the lack of smart design in material band structure. Here in study, fine α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles armored with Pt nanocrystals (α-Fe 2 O 3 @Pt) was investigated as an alternative SDT agent with ingenious bandgap and structural design. The Schottky barrier, due to its unique heterostructure, suppresses the recombination of sono-induced electrons and holes, enabling superior ROS generation. More importantly, the composite nanoparticles may effectively trigger a reoxygenation phenomenon to supply sufficient content of oxygen, favoring the ROS induction under the hypoxic condition and its extra role played for ultrasound imaging. In consequence, α-Fe 2 O 3 @Pt appears to enable effective tumor inhibition with imaging guidance, both in vitro and in vivo. This study has therefore demonstrated a highly potential platform for ultrasound-driven tumor theranostic, which may spark a series of further explorations in therapeutic systems with more rational material design. α-Fe 2 O 3 /porous g-C 3 N 4 (α-Fe 2 O 3 /PCN) photocatalysts were fabricated via a facile and green method. Structural characterization indicated α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto PCN. The α-Fe 2 O 3 /PCN nanocomposites were proven durable with significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B photodegradation than the single components under visible light irradiation. The improved photoactivity was mainly attributed to the broadened visible light absorption, enriched active sites, and formation of α-Fe 2 O 3 /PCN heterojunction that addressed the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes. The α-Fe 2 O 3 /PCN hybrids also showed high recyclability and chemical stability.

Hematite suffers from low carrier concentration, limited hole diffusion distance, intricate surface states, and sluggish kinetic process of water oxidation, resulting in its inadequate performance for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation. This paper presents a method that combines tin doping and in situ growth of cobalt-gallium layered hydroxide co-catalysts to enhance the performance of the α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimal CoGa-LDH/Sn-Fe 2 O 3 exhibits a significantly improved photocurrent density of 1.08 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, representing an 86 % enhancement compared to that of Sn-Fe 2 O 3 , and it demonstrates remarkable stability. Additionally, the cathodic displacement of CoGa-LDH/Sn-Fe 2 O 3 is observed to be 80 mV relative to the onset potential of Sn-Fe 2 O 3 . Systematic studies have demonstrated that tin doping significantly enhances the density of carriers in hematite and reduces the charge migration impedance of hematite, while the utilization of CoGa-LDH co-catalysts mitigates the complexation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and reduces the transport resistance of photogenerated holes at the photoanode-electrolyte interface, consequently promoting the mobility of holes.

Hybrid material consisting of α -Fe 2 O 3 and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO/Fe 2 O 3 ) for supercapacitor electrode material has been synthesized via an easy one-step hydrothermal method, where urea serves as nitrogen source, reducing agent and precipitant. As a result, the reduction and nitrogen doping of graphene oxide and the in situ formation of α -Fe 2 O 3 are achieved simultaneously. The results show that the synthesized N-rGO/Fe 2 O 3 composite exhibits much better electrochemical performance than the sample without nitrogen doping. Moreover, thanks to the positive synergetic effect between N-rGO and α -Fe 2 O 3 , the N-rGO/Fe 2 O 3 composite shows superior electrochemical property, including high capacitance, excellent rate capability, and good cycle life. Consequently, the easy preparation approach in this work will be considered as an efficient pathway for the development of metal oxide or hydroxide/N-rGO electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.
Nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/ α -Fe 2 O 3 (N-rGO/Fe 2 O 3 ) composite was prepared via easy one-step hydrothermal method, where urea served as nitrogen source, reducing agent, and precipitant. The presence of N-rGO was favored for the smaller size and more homogenous distribution of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticle. Due to the nitrogen doping and positive synergistic effect between N-rGO and Fe 2 O 3 , the obtained composite exhibited superior electrochemical performance.

As a renewable energy source, solar energy holds significant potential for addressing future energy and environmental challenges. Concurrently, hydrogen (H2), as a clean and renewable energy carrier, has garnered substantial attention. Photoelectrocatalytic water splitting to produce H2represents an emerging green technology for converting solar energy into hydrogen energy, which has been highly valued by researchers. The key to advancing this technology lies in identifying photoelectrode materials with high catalytic activity and stability. In this study, dendritic α-Fe was synthesized via electrodeposition at the optimal potential of −1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 300 s, and the photoelectrocatalytic performance of α-Fe2O3@Fe was enhanced through partial oxidation annealing at 300 °C for 6 h. This approach effectively addressed the issue of the short carrier transport distance in α-Fe2O3. The resulting partially oxidized α-Fe2O3@Fe(300 °C, 6 h) exhibited a photocurrent density of 281.1 μA/cm2at +0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was 2.23 times higher than that of the fully oxidized dendritic α-Fe2O3(500 °C, 2 h) (125.8 μA/cm2). The influence of deposition potential on photoelectrocatalytic performance was systematically explored, and the optimal deposition potential was identified. Additionally, surface modification with 0.15 wt% Pt (ultra-low loading) was employed to further improve the photocatalytic stability of α-Fe2O3(500 °C, 2 h). After continuous operation for 2 h, the photocurrent of the surface-modified sample decreased by only 6.5%, indicating a substantial enhancement in stability.

The development of self-powered humidity sensors featuring rapid response, low hysteresis, and dual-mode signal output is highly anticipated in healthcare monitoring, wearable electronics and human-machine interaction. Here, we present a hydrogen bonding-mediated self-assembly strategy to synthesize α-Fe 2 O 3 -decorated reduced graphene oxide (Fe 2 O 3 -rGO) hybrids for high-performance dual-mode humidity sensing. In impedance mode, the sensor demonstrates a broad detection range (11–98 % RH), a response value of 71.1 at 98 % RH, fast response/recovery times (1 s/5 s), and minimal hysteresis (3.7 %). The sensing mechanism, elucidated through complex impedance spectroscopy and water adsorption isotherms, reveals synergistic proton transport and p-n heterojunction effects at the α-Fe 2 O 3 -rGO interface. Notably, the sensor also operates in a self-powered mode, generating an ultrahigh output voltage (1.1 V at 98 % RH) through humidity-triggered galvanic reactions, enabling capacitor charging and light-emitting diode (LED) driving. Practical applicability is demonstrated through real-time respiratory monitoring, Morse code communication, and non-contact finger motion tracking, underscoring its utility in wearable electronics. This work provides a scalable and cost-effective approach to designing multifunctional humidity sensors with broad applicability in smart systems and healthcare.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with water oxidation provides a fascinating approach to mitigating the issues of global warming and energy shortage. Herein, a direct Z-scheme heterojunction of Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3 comprising a g-C3N4-supported single-atomic Co site catalyst (denoted as Co1-C3N4) and α-Fe2O3 nanorod arrays is fabricated for efficient CO2 reduction. A CO production rate of 14.9 μmol g−1 h−1 with a high CO selectivity (>99%) is achieved under visible-light irradiation without any sacrificial agents other than water. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis reveals that both the Z-scheme mechanism and the single-atomic Co sites contribute to the prolonged lifetime of the photo-induced excitons. Moreover, the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction would lead to an altered charge density of the single-atomic Co sites. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy and anion adsorption measurements reveal that the key intermediate CO2− could be efficiently stabilized by the positively charged Co sites in Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3, thus enhancing the CO2 reduction performance. This work offers a new direction for the rational design of single-atomic site catalysts in artificial photosynthesis.

High porosity α -Fe 2 O 3 has attracted a lot of attention due to its exceptional structure. In this paper, nanoflake assembled hierarchical porous flower-like α -Fe 2 O 3 was prepared by hydrothermal and calcination methods without any additional templates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphological characterization results show that with the increase of calcination temperature (400 ∘ C, 450 ∘ C, 500 ∘ C, 550 ∘ C, 600 ∘ C), pores appeared. However, the results of nitrogen adsorption show that the specific surface area of the α -Fe 2 O 3 reaches the maximum value (52.19 m 2 /g) when the calcination temperature is 500 ∘ C. The gas sensing performance of flower-like α -Fe 2 O 3 with different calcination temperature is compared, interestingly, with the increase of calcination temperature, the response of the samples increased first and then decreased, and reached the maximum value (44.2–100 parts per million (ppm) acetone) when the calcination temperature was 500 ∘ C. The minimum concentration for acetone was 200 ppb (response value is 2.0). Moreover, calcined at 500 ∘ C, hierarchical porous α -Fe 2 O 3 has a fast response recovery (4/25 s) and low working temperature (210 ∘ C). These excellent gas sensing properties are mainly due to porous structure, large specific surface area, and oxygen vacancies on the surface, which make it a promising material for acetone sensors.

Transition metal oxide , α-Fe 2 O 3 , has attracted great interest as a kind of potential battery-type electrode material due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, α-Fe 2 O 3 still suffers from poor conductivity and large volume expansion during charge and discharge process. Herein, for the first time, the oxygen vacancies-modifying α-Fe 2 O 3 are prepared via a novel two-step calcination of MIL-88-Fe (Fe-MOF) template. Note that the incorporation of oxygen vacancies into α-Fe 2 O 3 nano-octahedron will promote faster charge storage kinetics and enables the α-Fe 2 O 3 structure to be retained during the Li-ions. The oxygen vacancies-modifying α-Fe 2 O 3 nano-octahedron exhibits high specific capacity (250.2 mAh g −1 ), and an activated carbon (AC)//α-Fe 2 O 3 hybrid supercapacitor is constructed, delivering a high energy density of 63 W h kg −1 at a power density of 900 W kg −1 . This finding underlines the importance of incorporating oxygen vacancies into battery-type electrode materials for promoting the practical application.
