Storing solar energy in battery systems is crucial to achieving a green and sustainable society. However, the efficient development of photo-enhanced zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers on the photocathode. In this work, the visible-light-driven CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with unique petal-like layer structure was designed and developed, which can be used as air electrode for visible-light-driven ZABs. The superior performance of ZABs assembled by CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 was mainly attributed to the successful construction of Schottky heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which accelerates the transfer of electrons from g-C 3 N 4 to CoS 2 /CuS cocatalysts, improves the carrier separation ability, and extends the carrier lifetime. Thereinto, the visible-driven ZABs assembled by CoS 2 /CuS@CNT-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst has a power density of 588.90 mW cm –2 and a charge-discharge cycle of 643 h under visible light irradiation, which is the highest performance ever reported for photo-enhanced ZABs. More importantly, the charge-discharge voltage drop of ZABs was only 0.54 V under visible light irradiation, which is significantly lower than the voltage drop (0.94 V) in the dark. This study provides a new idea for designing efficient and stable visible-light-driven ZABs cathode catalysts.

ABSTRACT Enhancing catalytic activity of multi-enzyme in vitro through substrate channeling effect is promising yet challenging. Herein, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs)-scaffolded integrated enzyme cascade systems (I-ECSs) are constructed through co-entrapping glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in which hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is the intermediate product. The interplay of low-resistance mass transfer pathway and appropriate pore wall-H 2 O 2 interactions facilitates the directed transfer of H 2 O 2 , resulting in 2.4-fold and 5.0-fold elevation in catalytic activity compared to free ECSs and separated ECSs, respectively. The substrate channeling effect could be regulated by altering the mass ratio of GOx to HRP. Besides, I-ECSs demonstrate excellent stabilities in harsh environments and multiple recycling.

Although bimetallic phosphide cocatalysts have attracted considerable interest in photocatalysis research owing to their advantageous thermodynamic characteristics, superstable and efficient cocatalysts have rarely been produced through the modulation of their structure and composition. In this study, a series of bimetallic nickel-iron phosphide (Ni x Fe 2– x P, where 0 < x < 2) cocatalysts with controllable structures and overpotentials were designed by adjusting the atomic ratio of Ni/Fe onto nonmetallic elemental red phosphorus (RP) for the photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) coupled with hydrogen production. The catalysts exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic activity for benzaldehyde and a high H 2 yield. The RP regulated by bimetallic phosphide cocatalysts (Ni x Fe 2– x P) demonstrated higher photocatalytic oxidation-reduction activity than that regulated by monometallic phosphide cocatalysts (Ni 2 P and Fe 2 P). In particular, the RP regulated by Ni 1.25 Fe 0.75 P exhibited the best photocatalytic performance. In addition, experimental and theoretical calculations further illustrated that Ni 1.25 Fe 0.75 P, with the optimized electronic structure, possessed good electrical conductivity and provided strong adsorption and abundant active sites, thereby accelerating electron migration and lowering the reaction energy barrier of RP. This finding offers valuable insights into the rational design of highly effective cocatalysts aimed at optimizing the photocatalytic activity of composite photocatalysts.

In recent years, zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) have attracted increasing attention due to their environmental friendliness and excellent electrochemical properties. However, their performance is mainly limited by the electrochemical performance of the cathode, so it is necessary to develop an advanced cathode material. N, B co-doped sodium alginate-based porous carbon (NBSPC) was prepared by one-step co-carbonization using sodium alginate as the matrix and NH 4 B 5 O 8 as the N and B source. This N, B co-doping strategy improves the pore structure of the carbon materials and increases the number of surface functional groups, greatly improving the capacitive behavior of the raw materials and thus improving their electrochemical performance. When used as the cathode in ZIHCs, the NBSPC had an excellent rate performance (85.4 mAh g −1 even at ultra-high current density of 40 A g −1 ) and good cycling stability (15 000 cycles at 20 A g −1 with a capacity retention rate of 94.5%).

Designing efficient and robust catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is imperative for saline water electrolysis technology. A catalyst composed of Co x P nanowires array with N-doped carbon nanosheets (NC) was fabricated on Ni foam (NF) by an in-situ growth strategy. The material is designated as NC/Co x P@NF. In the preparation process, Co(OH) 2 nanowires were transformed into a metal organic framework of cobalt (ZIF-67) on NF by the dissolution-coordination of endogenous Co 2+ and 2-methylimidazole. The resulting cactus-like microstructure gives NC/Co x P@NF abundant exposed active sites and ion transport channels, which improve the HER catalytic reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the interconnected alternating nanowires and free-standing nanosheets in NC/Co x P@NF improve its structural stability, and the formation of surface polyanions (phosphate) and a NC nanosheet protective layer improve the anti-corrosive properties of catalysts. Thus, the NC/Co x P@NF has an excellent performance, requiring overpotentials of 107 and 133 mV for HER to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 mol L −1 KOH and 1.0 mol L −1 KOH + 0.5 mol L −1 NaCl, respectively. This in-situ transformation strategy is a new way of constructing highly-efficient HER catalysts for saline water electrolysis.

Designing Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts to selectively produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels is a crucial challenge. Herein, we selectively introduced Co nanoparticles (NPs) into the micropores and mesopores of an ordered mesoporous MFI zeolite (OMMZ) through impregnation, which controlled the carbon number distribution in the FTS products by tuning the position of catalytic active sites in differently sized pores. The Co precursors coordinated by acetate with a size of 9.4 × 4.2 × 2.5 Å and by 2,2 ‘ -bipyridine with a size of 9.5 × 8.7 × 7.9 Å, smaller and larger than the micropores ( ca. 5.5 Å) of MFI , made the Co species incorporated in OMMZ's micropores and mesopores, respectively. The carbon number products synthesized with the Co NPs confined in mesopores were larger than that in micropores. The high jet and diesel selectivities of 66.5% and 65.3% were achieved with Co NPs confined in micropores and mesopores of less acidic Na-type OMMZ, respectively. Gasoline and jet selectivities of 76.7% and 70.8% were achieved with Co NPs confined in micropores and mesopores of H-type OMMZ with Brönsted acid sites, respectively. A series of characterizations revealed that the selective production of diesel and jet fuels was due to the C–C cleavage suppressing of heavier hydrocarbons by the Co NPs located in mesopores.

ABSTRACT Owing to the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with strong Coulomb interactions, the photocatalytic activity of metal-free conjugated polymers is often unsatisfactory. This article reports a simple method for incorporating carbon dots (CDs) into highly crystalline covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) by directly heating a pretreated mixture of 1,4-dicyanobenzene, CDs, and alkali metal salts in air. The resultant photocatalyst exhibits a H 2 O 2 production rate, solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency, and apparent quantum yield of 2464 μmol h –1 g –1 , 0.9% at full spectrum, and 13% at 500 nm, respectively, surpassing most reported photocatalysts. The results of this study reveal that CDs can serve as hole extractors to efficiently drive exciton dissociation and can offer active sites for water oxidation reactions. This study is also the first to observe that alkali metal ions can interact with the carboxylic acid groups on the surface of CDs during synthesis to enhance the hole-extraction ability of CTFs, thereby accelerating photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. This study provides insights into the rational design of highly efficient CDs-based photocatalysts.

Bazi Bushen (BZBS), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in testicular dysfunction within D-galactose and NaNO 2 mouse models. This study aimed to ascertain if BZBS could also mitigate the decline in testicular function associated with natural aging. Therefore, male aged mice were employed to evaluate the preventive effects of BZBS on male reproductive aging. This was achieved by assessing sex hormone production, testicular histomorphology, and spermatogenesis. Relative to the untreated aged control group, BZBS administration elevated the levels of sex hormones and spermatocyte populations and preserved normal testicular structure in aged mice. Notably, spermatogenesis was maintained. Further analyses, including malondialdehyde (MDA) assays and real-time PCR, indicated that BZBS diminished testicular oxidative stress and the inflammatory burden. Corroborating these findings, mice treated with BZBS exhibited reductions in the populations of senescent and apoptotic cells within the seminiferous tubules, suggesting alleviated cellular damage. In contrast, we observed that rapamycin, a drug known for its longevity benefits, induced excessive testicular apoptosis and did not decrease lipid peroxidation. Collectively, our results highlight BZBS’s promising clinical potential in counteracting male reproductive aging, underlining its mechanisms of action.

ABSTRACT Alkaline water electrolysis allows the adoption of non-precious metal catalysts , but increases the challenge of cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with the proton-deficient environment. Here we report an “all-in-one” design by atomic-level tailoring on molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) basal planes with synergistic active centers to trigger water dissociation for proton supply and meanwhile improve proton adsorption for hydrogen evolution. The resultant Co/O-codoped MoS 2 (Co-O@MoS 2 ) catalyst shows superb alkaline HER activity with a small Tafel slope of 42 mV dec –1 and an overpotential as low as 81 mV at 100 mA cm –2 , and considerable stability over 300 h even at industrial-grade high current density of 600 mA cm –2 , which are among the best records for precious-metal-free HER catalysts in alkaline media. The markedly enhanced alkaline HER performance is attributed to the synergistic effect from atomically constructed O-Co-S 2 motifs with local electronic interactions, in which Co sites promote the premier water dissociation, and S sites facilitate proton transition to generate hydrogen, respectively. This work presents an atomic-scale structural modification to create synergistic active sites for alkaline HER and provides insights into the atomic activation engineering towards advanced catalysts.

A newly developed ionic electro-active actuator composed of an ionic electrolyte layer sandwiched between two graphene film layers was investigated. Scanning electronic microscopy observation and x-ray diffraction analysis showed that the graphene sheets in the film stacked in a nearly face-to-face fashion but did not restack back to graphite, and the resulting graphene film with low sheet resistance (10 Ω sq−1) adheres well to the electrolyte membrane. Contact angle measurement showed the surface energy (37.98 mJ m−2) of the ionic electrolyte polymer is 2.67 times higher than that (14.2 mJ m−2) of the Nafion membrane, contributing to the good adhesion between the graphene film electrode and the electrolyte membrane. An electric double-layer is formed at the interface between the graphene film electrode and the ionic electrolyte membrane under the input potential, resulting in a higher capacitance of 27.6 mF cm−2. We report that this ionic actuator exhibits adequate bending strain, ranging from 0.032 to 0.1% (305 to 945 μm) as functions of voltage.

In this work, pure α-Fe2O3 and Er2O3-Fe2O3 nanotubes were synthesized by a simple single-capillary electrospinning technology followed by calcination treatment. The morphologies and crystal structures of the as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, respectively. The gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared samples have been researched, and the result shows that the Er2O3-Fe2O3 nanotubes exhibit much better sensitivity to ethanol. The response value of Er2O3-Fe2O3 nanotubes to 10 ppm ethanol is 21 at the operating temperature 240°, which is 14 times larger than that of pure α-Fe2O3 nanotubes (response value is 1.5). The ethanol sensing properties of α-Fe2O3 nanotubes are remarkably enhanced by doping Er, and the lowest detection limit of Er2O3-Fe2O3 nanotubes is 300 ppb, to which the response value is about 2. The response and recovery times are about 4 s and 70 s to 10 ppm ethanol, respectively. In addition, the Er2O3-Fe2O3 nanotubes possess good selectivity and long-term stability.

We develop an ionic polymer metal-carbon nanotube composite (IPMCC) actuator composed of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Nafion membrane sandwiched between two hybrid electrodes, composed of palladium, platinum and MWCNTs. The surface morphology and cross-sectional structure of the metal-carbon nanotube hybrid electrode were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM investigation indicated that the MWCNT layer can adhere very well with the platinum–palladium metal electrode, fill the cracks in the metal surface, and prevent the oxidation of nanoscale platinum particles. These observations show that the surface resistance of the total electrode is retained and the stability of electrode property is maintained. The displacement, blocking force and nonlinear current versus voltage (V–I) characteristics were measured. Compared with an ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC), the IPMCC shows a more stable displacement and blocking force under 1, 1.2 and 2 V at 0.1 Hz, and 2.34–3.29 times higher effective air-operating time under 3 V at 0.1 Hz. It can be observed from the V–I characteristics that the change in shape becomes significant at amplitudes higher than 1.2 V. An equivalent circuit is used to model the nonlinear behavior of the IPMCC, in which the leakage current was taken into account and analyzed. The values of the components in the circuit are estimated and electrical behavior is simulated by using the Pspice software. Compared with the model with no consideration of the leakage current, the simulations obtained by the model considering leakage current showed better agreement with the experimental results. The impressive leakage current (20 mA), which is successfully simulated by the proposed model with the nonlinear circuit, is shown to play an important role in the total current.
