Fabrication of a novel Ag3PO4/WO3·H2O composite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methylene blue and oxytetracycline

Jianke Tang,Rongqian Meng,Yanfeng Xue,Shengjian Zhang,Qiaoling Li

A novel Ag 3 PO 4 /WO 3 ·H 2 O composite was prepared by loading Ag 3 PO 4 on WO 3 ·H 2 O substrate via a two-step hydrothermal method and characterized by various analytical techniques. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible light irradiation. Within 30 min, 98.9 % MB can be degraded by the Ag 3 PO 4 /WO 3 ·H 2 O composite with a molar ratio of 3:1 (3Ag/1W), which is higher than that of individual Ag 3 PO 4 and WO 3 ·H 2 O. The 3Ag/1W photocatalyst also exhibits improved photocatalytic activity for OTC degradation than pure WO 3 ·H 2 O and Ag 3 PO 4 . The improvement of photocatalytic activity would be mainly ascribed to the highly efficient separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs due to matched band structure, as confirmed by photoluminescence spectra (PL) and photocurrent responses test. According to the experimental results of radical trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR), a possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Ag 3 PO 4 /WO 3 ·H 2 O composite was proposed.

Jixiang Wang,Hongqiang Shen,Xiaohui Dai,Chunmei Li,Weidong Shi,Yongsheng Yan

The photocatalytic technology provides a simple and effective strategy for the ever-increasing environmental and energy problem. In this work, we put forward a practical method to facilitate effectively the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes by addition of graphene oxide in Ag3PO4 and Bi2O3 nanocrystals semiconductor composite. Compared with GO-single component, the three-component GO-Ag3PO4/Bi2O3 composites with the optimum Ag3PO4/Bi2O3 ratio (6:4) and content of GO (6 wt-%) presented a further improvement on the photodegradation of tetracycline by visible light irradiation driven. GO served as a medium is used to effectively transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the conduction band Bi2O3 of to the valence band of Ag3PO4, the Z-Scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism was proposed. Our work provides an effective method for development of pragmatic photocatalyst in present environmental pollution, energy problems and other related fields.

A two-in-one strategy to enhance intrinsic activity and accessibility of active sites of Ag3PO4-based photocatalysts for degrading environmental pollutants

Qing Wang,Jiamin Wei,Shiye Xu,Jiajie Li,Tinghai Yang,Guangyu He,Haiqun Chen

Intrinsic activity and accessibility of active sites are two fundamental descriptors for enhancing Ag 3 PO 4 -based photocatalysts. However, simultaneously optimizing both parameters poses a significant challenge for Ag 3 PO 4 -based heterojunction photocatalysts prepared by a conventional ion exchange precipitation method. This study demonstrates that Ag 3 PO 4 /In 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction prepared by pre-fabrication and post calcination method not only increases the electron transfer rate (boosts intrinsic activity) by introducing oxygen vacancies and constructing heterojunctions, but also obtains highly dispersed Ag 3 PO 4 particles on the surface of hollow tubular In 2 O 3 after calcination treatment (enhances accessibility of active sites). Remarkably, the optimized Ag 3 PO 4 /In 2 O 3 -2 Z-scheme heterojunction demonstrates an exceptional catalytic efficiency (0.113 min −1 ) in facilitating the photocatalytic decomposition of tetracycline (TC), significantly outperforming the catalyst synthesized via the conventional ion exchange precipitation technique (0.036 min −1 ). In addition, three-dimensional excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, photoelectrochemical testing, free radical capture experiments, and electron spin resonance techniques were conducted to elucidate the possible degradation pathways for TC. Importantly, a systematic investigation was conducted to assess the practical application potential of Ag 3 PO 4 /In 2 O 3 -2 composites, encompassing the degradation activity in actual wastewater, different dyes and antibiotics, as well as the calculation of toxicity of degradation products and exploration of antibacterial activity. This study provides a “two-in-one” strategy from the perspective of synchronously enhancing the intrinsic activity of catalysts and the accessibility of active sites.

Comparative study of enhanced adsorption-photodegradation activity using activated biochar composited with Ag3PO4 or Ag6Si2O7 in wastewater treatment and disinfection: Effects and mechanisms

Tongtong Wang,Florian J. Stadler,Dalal Z. Husein,Di Zhang,Jinjun Cai,Yifan Wang,Minghao Li,Yin Qiang,Jiyong Zheng

To efficiently remove organic pollutants from wastewater combined with a disinfection effect, using activated biochar (ACB) as substrate, ACB-Ag 3 PO 4 and ACB-Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 composite photocatalysts were prepared via the in-situ co-precipitation method. The structure, morphology, physicochemical, and optical properties were characterized by advanced techniques, and the adsorption-photodegradation effects on tetracycline (TC), chloramphenicol (CAP), and rhodamine B (RhB) were investigated. The results revealed that ACB-Ag 3 PO 4 and ACB-Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 with heterojunction were successfully synthesized, and their optimum loading ratios were 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. The removal rates of ACB-Ag 3 PO 4 and ACB-Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 for TC were 98.48% and 91.87%, 95.88% and 85.23% for CAP, 99.13% and 83.54% for RhB, respectively, and also much higher than those of pure Ag 3 PO 4 and Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 . Moreover, the degradation efficiency and mineralization rate of ACB-Ag 3 PO 4 were higher than those of ACB-Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 for all pollutants. Further, both composites maintained about a 99% sterilization rate against both S. aureus and E. coli at 48 h. These were attributed to the introduction of ACB, which enriched the elemental composition of Ag-based semiconductors and increased the specific surface area and visible light absorption. Importantly, the composites narrow the bandgap energy and optimize energy band structure, and the special structure of ACB facilitated the photocatalytic activity . Moreover, possible photogenerated carrier transfer paths of the two composites are either type-II or Z-scheme, and the performance differences are related to the photogenerated carriers, absorbance, and microstructure. ACB-Ag 3 PO 4 is more recommended for environmental applications given its better photostability and reusability than ACB-Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 , and its removal of TC and RhB from actual wastewater exceeded 61.39% and 86.62%, respectively.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light by using a ternary photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/AgBr/g-C3N4 with dual Z-scheme heterojunction

Hongbin Yu,Danyang Wang,Bin Zhao,Ying Lu,Xinhong Wang,Suiyi Zhu,Weichao Qin,Mingxin Huo

A ternary dual Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of Ag 3 PO 4 , AgBr and g-C 3 N 4 was prepared by a facile chemical deposition method. Scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, diffusive reflective spectrophotometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were carried out to characterize the morphology, element and structure properties of the photocatalysts. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photoelectrochemical tests and the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The results indicated that the composite Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr-20%g-C 3 N 4 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity in terms of the photocurrent response and the degradation of TC under visible light irradiation. The degradation rate of TC over the ternary photocatalyst was 0.12 min −1 , which was 2.55 and 3.24 times faster than that over Ag 3 PO 4 /AgBr and Ag 3 PO 4 , respectively. During photocatalysis, metallic Ag could be formed and served as the electron transfer mediator to build the dual Z-scheme heterojunction by bridging the recombination of electrons and holes. By this manner, more efficient separation of photo-generated carriers and better redox ability could be obtained, consequently promoting the photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the trapping experiments verified that O 2 − and h + played prominent roles in the photocatalytic processes, while the impact of OH on the removal efficiency was relatively small.

In situ template-free synthesis of a novel 3D p–n heteroarchitecture Ag3PO4/Ta3N5 photocatalyst with high activity and stability under visible radiation

Wen Wang,Hua-Bin Fang,Yan-Zhen Zheng,Yanke Che,Xia Tao,Jian-Feng Chen

A novel 3D p–n heteroarchitecture Ag3PO4/Ta3N5 composite photocatalyst with double visible-light-response characteristics has been prepared using an in situ template-free precipitation method. It is found that the fascinating Ag3PO4/Ta3N5 exhibited high superior photoactivity and photostability compared to bare Ag3PO4 and Ta3N5 for the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The improved performance of the composite is primarily attributable to sufficient visible-light harvesting, efficient charge separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes resulting from matched energy bandgaps and sufficient p–n hetero-interfaces between Ag3PO4 and Ta3N5. The quenching effects of different scavengers demonstrate that the reactive h+ and O2−˙ species played a major role in the photodegradation process. It is expected that the 3D p–n heterostructure composite fabricated via a facile precipitation method, may be a promising candidate for organic pollutant degradation.

What is the transfer mechanism of photogenerated carriers for the nanocomposite photocatalyst Ag3PO4/g-C3N4, band–band transfer or a direct Z-scheme?

Sugang Meng,Xiaofeng Ning,Tao Zhang,Shi-Fu Chen,Xianliang Fu

The separation mechanisms of photoexcited carriers for composite photocatalysts are a hot point in the photocatalytic field. In this paper, the Ag3PO4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites with different main parts (Ag3PO4 or g-C3N4) were synthesized using a facile in situ precipitation method. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller methods. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. When the main part of the Ag3PO4/g-C3N4 photocatalyst is Ag3PO4, the transfer mechanism of photogenerated electron–hole takes generic band–band transfer, and the photocatalytic activity is decreased. However, when the primary part of the Ag3PO4/g-C3N4 photocatalyst is g-C3N4, the migration of photogenerated electron–hole exhibits a typical Z-scheme mechanism, and the photocatalytic activity is increased greatly. The separation mechanisms of photogenerated carriers were investigated by the electron spin resonance technology, the photoluminescence technique and the determination of reactive species in the photocatalytic reactions. It is hoped that this work could render guided information for design and application of Z-scheme photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic performance.

Probing the inhomogeneity and intermediates in the photosensitized degradation of rhodamine B by Ag3PO4 nanoparticles from an ensemble to a single molecule approach

Beibei Xu,Xiaojuan Wang,Chaofeng Zhu,Xia Ran,Tianfeng Li,Lijun Guo

The photoinduced dynamics related to the degradation of a surface adsorbate by a semiconductive catalyst is critical for understanding the photocatalytic mechanism and improving the catalytic property of nanoscale materials. Herein, we report the investigation of the inhomogeneous interactions between Ag3PO4 nanoparticles and rhodamine B (RhB), and the direct observation of the intermediates generated in the photodegradation of RhB, using ensemble-averaged as well as single-molecule time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies. The results demonstrate the existence of electron injection from RhB into the conduction band of Ag3PO4 and the formation of a deethylation intermediate before the subsequent degradation process. The fluorescence diversity both in lifetime and intensity fluctuation indicates an inhomogeneous interfacial interaction between the RhB molecule and Ag3PO4 nanoparticle with surface heterogeneity. Based on the lifetime distribution, the duration time of single-molecule events and the related dynamical analysis, it was revealed that the RhB molecule adsorbed on the active site of the Ag3PO4 nanoparticle has a higher injection efficiency and better photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the lifetime evolution derived from a subsection of the single-molecule emission trajectories proved that the electron injection occurred prior to the degradation through the attack of free radical O2˙−. These findings provide new insights into the heterogeneous interactions and dynamical information of the photosensitized degradation in an adsorbate/semiconductor catalyst.

Visible-light photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes in water by Ag3PO4: An unusual dependency between adsorption and the degradation rate on pH value

Ruiping Li,Xianghua Song,Yingping Huang,Yanfen Fang,Manke Jia,Wanhong Ma

During visible light photocatalytic degradation of Congo red (CR) in water at different pH values by Ag 3 PO 4 catalyst, the process was found along an irregular dependency between the degradation rate and adsorption capacity. The adsorption efficiency of CR on Ag 3 PO 4 decreased with increasing initial solution pH, whereas its degradation efficiency increased with increasing solution pH value. This phenomenon was significantly different from conventional photocatalytic properties of most catalysts for heterogeneous photocatalysis of organic compounds in aqueous solution. Three other azo dyes, i.e. Methyl orange (MO), Methyl red (MR) and Orange II, were used to further confirm such an adsorption-degradation relationship of Ag 3 PO 4 /dye at different pH value of solution. The tested three dyes behaved similar to CR, and they showed unexceptionally higher adsorption behavior and lower degradation efficiency at low pH value or vice versa at high pH value. This special adsorption-degradation relationship for azo dyes with Ag 3 PO 4 as visible-light catalyst was correlated with the OH group-related defects present on Ag 3 PO 4 surface as determined by FTIR spectroscopy and surface fluorination method, implying that the defects played an important role for the visible-light photocatalysis of Ag 3 PO 4 in water solution.

Enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of Ag3PO4 nano-sheets using MS2 (M = Mo, W)/rGO hybrids as co-catalysts for 4-nitrophenol degradation in water

Weiping Zhang,Guiying Li,Wanjun Wang,Yaxin Qin,Taicheng An,Xinyan Xiao,Wonyong Choi

A chemically modified Ag 3 PO 4 @MS 2 (M = Mo, W)/rGO composite was firstly synthesized via a liquid-exfoliation solvothermal method. The structure, morphology, optical properties and composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The characterization results indicated that compact structure could be obtained by using this typical method due to in-situ chemical modification, which could also control the sizes of Ag 3 PO 4 nano-sheets by adding MS 2 /rGO hybrids. More importantly, the resultant Ag 3 PO 4 @MS 2 /rGO composite exhibited higher photocatalytic activity and stability toward the degradation of 4-nitrophenol than pure Ag 3 PO 4 under sunlight irradiation. The stable structure of Ag 3 PO 4 @MS 2 /rGO was closely related with Z-scheme electronic structure and electrical conductivity of MS 2 /rGO hybrids, leading to a higher consumption and transfer of photogenerated electrons. However, by controlling the amounts of MS 2 /rGO hybrids, more stable but lower photocatalytic activity composites could be obtained. Further analysis found that the holes and O 2 − were the main reactive species involved in the photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol. In addition, possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of 4-nitrophenol were also proposed based on the identified intermediates. The findings of this work may provide a new method to design efficient composites for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants .

An efficient ECL aptasensor based on resonance energy transfer between NCDs@Ag3PO4 and Cu-doped Cu: Eu MOF for the detection of diethylstilbestrol

Longmei Yao,Jiajia Zhi,Wenchang Wang,Qingyi Li,Ding Jiang,Xiaohui Chen,Zhidong Chen

As a synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES) residues in water pose a threat to human health. In this work, a novel electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) aptamer sensor based on NCDs@Ag 3 PO 4 as a resonance energy transfer donor and Cu 2+ doped Eu MOF (Cu: Eu MOF) as an efficient resonance energy transfer acceptor for the detection of diethylstilbestrol (DES) was proposed for the first time. The aptamer sensor uses Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles loaded with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) as the ECL emitter, which improves the electron transfer efficiency of the sensor and promotes the generation of SO 4 ·- radicals, thereby improving the luminescence intensity and stability of the ECL sensor. The energy acceptor Cu: Eu MOF binds to the apt on NCDs@Ag 3 PO 4 by complementary base pairing through complementary DNA (cDNA). When DES is present in the sample, DES competes with the energy acceptor. The stronger interaction between DES and apt leads to the shedding of Cu: Eu MOF-cDNA from the electrode and the recovery of ECL signal. Based on this, under optimal conditions, the linear range of the sensor for detecting DES is 1.0 × 10 −13 –1.0 × 10 −6 M, and the detection limit is 7.4 × 10 −14  M (S/N = 3). The developed aptasensor showed excellent recognition ability for residual DES in actual water samples. The sensor has superior measurement ability and potential application value in the field of environmental water quality monitoring.

Built-in electric field driven rapid charge transfer at the Ag3PO4/Cu-Co PBAs S-scheme interface for CO2 reduction into chemical energy

Lina Dai,He Wang,Liru Cui,Yanduo Liu

Single photocatalysts face problems such as easy recombination of photo-generated charge carriers, weak oxidation-reduction ability, and narrow spectral response range, which greatly restrict their practical applications in energy and environmental fields. This article constructs a new type of Cu-Co Prussian blue analogues S-scheme photocatalytic material. The material is composed of oxidized photocatalysts (Ag 3 PO 4 ) and reduced photocatalysts (Cu-Co PBAs). By utilizing the characteristics of Cu-Co Prussian blue analogues photocatalysts, such as high conduction band position, rich catalytic sites, and small band gap, photocatalytic efficiency can be significantly enhanced. The CO production rate is 36.3 μmol/g/h, and the selectivity can reach 93.8 %, which is far superior to the current mainstream photocatalytic system. By studying the construction method and CO 2 reduction performance of the composite photocatalyst, the structure-performance relationship is clarified. The steady-state photocurrent spectroscopy reveals the S-scheme mechanism photocarrier transfer and separation kinetics. Techniques such as near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal the interface electron transfer mechanism. In-situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory calculations are used to study the formation of reaction intermediates and reveal the catalytic mechanism. This study will offer critical understanding for advancing developments of selective photocatalysts aimed at sustainable CO 2 utilization.
