Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising nanoprobes in DNA/RNA detection, such as respiratory viral RNAs, and siRNA in cancer. However, recent studies have indicated that the sensitivity of UCNP-based biosensors is restricted, ranging from picomolar to femtomolar level. Moreover, most of existing UCNP-based probes are only able to detect short-chain oligonucleotides, which are not suitable for detection of long-chain oligonucleotides in many real applications. In this work, we introduced a new UCNP-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobe design composed of NaGdF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ @NaGdF 4 core-shell UCNPs (csUCNPs) linking with Au–Au dimer to detect long-chain oligonucleotides of SARS-CoV-2 N-gene. Compared with typical single gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in FRET biosensors, our theoretical investigation shows that a stronger electromagnetic field is generated in the Au–Au dimer where the plasmon resonance can enhance FRET efficiency and increase the working distance. Thus, the synergetic effect of plasmonic resonance and FRET enables a greater quenching efficiency (QE) of Au–Au dimer to UCNPs, which leads to more remarkable upconversion luminescence (UCL) recovery for each target gene recognition. Importantly, our design significantly improved the limit of detection (LOD) to attomolar level, with a linear response ranging from 2 aM to 2 fM. Moreover, the clinical detection with inactivated SARS-CoV-2 samples was successfully performed with excellent specificity within 30 min using the developed UCNPs biosensors incorporated with Au–Au dimer. This UCNP biosensor based on Au–Au dimer strategy with ultra-sensitivity and good selectivity opens a new path for clinical diagnosis without target amplification and plays an instructive role in other virus diagnosis.

Au nanotube-based composite membrane served as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with an ultralarge aspect ratio possesses an excellent flexibility and widely tunable surface plasmon resonance, and by introducing graphene oxide (GO) as a spacer layer, the SERS enhancement of the composite membrane is obviously better than those from the individual blocks of the Au nanotubes (AuNTS) membrane and the Au nanoparticle/graphene oxide (AuNP/GO) membrane. Such a “sandwich” (AuNP/GO/AuNT) structured membrane has a high SERS sensitivity and a wide tunability by controlling the size of Au nanoparticles and the thickness of graphene oxide, and the detection limits of the AuNP/GO/AuNT substrate for R6G and NBA are as low as 10–12 and 10–7 M, respectively; the large enhancement is attributed to the adsorption and chemical mechanism of graphene oxide and the physical mechanism of the Au nanoparticles and nanotubes (the electromagnetic field coupling between them).

Although the past decade has witnessed a rapid development of oxidoreductase-mimicking nanozymes, the mimicry of cofactors that play key roles in mediating electron and proton transfer remains limited. This study explores how surface Au–H species conjugated to Au nanoparticles (NPs) that imitate formate dehydrogenase (FDH) can serve as cofactors, analogous to NADH in natural enzymes, offering diverse possibilities for FDH-mimicking Au nanozymes to mimic various enzymes. Once O2 is present, Au–H species assist Au NPs to complete the on-demand H2O2 generation for cascade reactions. Alternatively, when oxidizing organic molecules are introduced as substrates, Au–H species confer nitro reductase- and aldehyde reductase-like activities on Au NPs under anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, similar to the dehydrogenase–NADH complex, Au NPs possessing Au–H species are gifted with esterase-like activity for ester hydrolysis. By revealing that Au–H species are prosthetic groups for FDH-mimicking Au nanozymes, this work may inspire explorations into future self-generated cofactor mimics for nanozymes, thereby circumventing the need for exogenous cofactors.

Summary Deliberately optimizing the d-band position of an active component via electronic and lattice strain tuning is an effective way to boost its catalytic performance. We herein demonstrate this concept by constructing core-shell Au@NiPd nanoparticles with NiPd alloy shells of only three atomic layers through combining an Au catalysis with the galvanic replacement reaction. The Au core with larger electronegativity modulates the Pd electronic configuration, while the Ni atoms alloyed in the ultrathin shells neutralize the lattice stretching in Pd shells exerted by Au cores, equipping the active Pd metal with a favorable d-band position for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction in an alkaline medium, for which core-shell Au@NiPd nanoparticles with a Ni/Pd atomic ratio of 3/7 exhibit a half-wave potential of 0.92 V, specific activity of 3.7 mA cm −2 , and mass activity of 0.65 A mg −1 at 0.9 V, much better than most of the recently reported Pd-even Pt-based electrocatalysts.

Purpose Pt-based nanostructures are one of the promising nanomaterials for being used in catalysts, sensors, and therapeutics. However, their impacts on the health and biological systems are not adequately understood yet. Methods In this work, nanorods composed of ultrasmall platinum (Pt) nanoparticles deposited on the surface and gold nanorod as the core (Au@Pt NRs) were synthesized, and the distribution and toxic effects of Au@Pt NRs were investigated in C57BL/6 mice with intravenous injection by using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and blood cell analyzer. Results At the time point of Day 1, Day 8 and Day 16 post injection of Au@Pt NRs (6 mg/kg of Pt atom), Au@Pt NRs were mainly accumulated in the liver and spleen. The energy dispersive spectrometer mapping images showed Au@Pt NRs experienced quick corrosion and Au released faster than Pt in the physiological environments. The catalase (CAT) activity in tissues increased slightly in the early stage of the Au@Pt NRs exposure and went down to the normal level. With HE staining, inflammatory cells infiltration could be seen in the tissues, while no significant influences were detected on the blood biochemistry and the function of liver and kidney. Conclusion In conclusion, intravenously injected Au@Pt NRs mainly distributed in the liver and spleen with comparable levels, and did not exert any significant toxic effects on the organs’ function within two weeks; meanwhile, Au@Pt NRs were able to degrade, which indicated acceptable safety to the mice and potentials of biomedical application.

A high-efficiency Z-scheme photocatalyst, Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(Au/SrTiO 3 )-Au-WO 3 , is fabricated successfully via hydrothermal and photo-deposition methods. All as-prepared samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, EDX, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, PL and DRS. The activity of the prepared Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(Au/SrTiO 3 )-Au-WO 3 photocatalyst is evaluated through photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI) under simulated solar light irradiation. The meaningful influencing factors such as simulated solar light irradiation time, light intensity, sacrificial agents and cycling times are investigated. The results displayed that the existence of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 can improve the utilization ratio of solar light for wide band-gap SrTiO 3 . Moreover, the formation of Z-scheme SrTiO 3 /WO 3 photocatalytic system and the introduction of Au nanoparticles as electron mediator and co-catalyst can promote the separation of photo-induced electron and hole to obtain much high photocatalytic activity . Finally, the mechanism on conversion of Cr(VI) caused by Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(Au/SrTiO 3 )-Au-WO 3 photocatalyst is put forward. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It has been widely recognized that adjusting the size of Au particles has emerged as a significant approach in catalyst design, catalyst screening, and comprehension of reaction mechanisms. However, the essential factors of Au nanoparticles used only as an additive to enhance the activity of traditional multicomponent thermocatalysts have not been fully revealed. In this study, a series of Au@Cu2O core–shell nanocatalysts were synthesized through a controllable method, featuring core sizes ranging from 11 to 33 nm and an average shell thickness of approximately 55 nm. It was revealed that the size effect of Au cores plays a very vital role in the stability of the active Cu+ species under reducing atmospheres (H2, acetylene and formaldehyde) as well as the catalytic performance of the catalysts in the ethynylation of formaldehyde. The experimental findings revealed that Au@Cu2O core–shell catalysts with Au core sizes ranging from 11 to 16 nm exhibited a higher abundance of electron-deficient Cu+ species in the shell, which is attributed to the strong long-range electromagnetic effects of the Au core in the absence of photoexcitation or an applied electric field. Additionally, the active Cu+ species demonstrated remarkable stability under reducing atmospheres. Although the stability of Cu+ decreased slightly when the Au core size exceeded 16 nm, the Cu+ content remained above 80%. Notably, the Au@Cu2O catalysts with Au core sizes ranging from 11 to 16 nm exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the ethynylation of formaldehyde.

In this work, an Au/g-C 3 N 4 /GO/Au hybrid nanofilm for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate application was prepared by a facile layer-by-layer assembly technique using nanosheet-structured graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), graphene oxide (GO) and 40 nm-gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The effects of composition, assembly sequence and assembly cycles on the SERS performance were optimized to achieve the SERS-active substrate. The detection limit of Au/g-C 3 N 4 /GO/Au substrate for crystal violet and rhodamine 6 G probe molecules reached as high as 10 -8 M, with good stability and uniformity. Its further application in food colorants detection (erythrosine, carmine and temptation red) had successfully met the national food safety standards and the quantitative detection for erythrosine and temptation red had also been established. Based on finite-difference time-domain element simulation and density functional theory quantum chemical calculation, the mechanism of the SERS effect of the substrate was unveiled, which is attributed to the combination of electromagnetic enhancement effect of Au nanoparticle aggregates and chemical enhancement effect of GO and g-C 3 N 4 . Notably, water droplet evaporation induced Raman enhancement was observed on the Au/g-C 3 N 4 /GO/Au substrate. This can be ascribed to the inhomogeneous evaporation of the droplet that promotes the enrichment of the probe molecules into the center of the droplet. This novel enhancement strategy provides a new idea for further improving detection sensitivity of SERS substrate materials.

Gold recovery is of practical significance while functional Au nanostructures are of great interest in modern nanotechnology. In this work, highly and hierarchically branched Au nanowires (AuNWs) were produced to obtain bio-AuNW composites while the Au was effectively recovered from aqueous HAuCl 4 solution by a microorganism-mediated, surfactant-directed (MSD) approach with Lactobacillus spp. cells (LSCs). Ternary coordination of the cell-surfactant-AA played an important role in recovering Au and producing the bio-AuNW composites in the cases of tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and octadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (OTAB). In contrast, Au recovery could not be achieved with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). Strong interaction between [AuCl 4 ] − and the LSCs prior to addition of surfactant (except CTAC) and ascorbic acid (AA) was vital for the highly and hierarchically branched nanostructures. Furthermore, the bio-AuNW composites could serve as excellent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate. the SERS detection limits of toxic rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) with the bio-AuNW composites are down to 10 −9 and 10 −6 M, respectively. This work therefore exemplifies combining recovery of Au and fabrication of functional Au nanomaterials, which was environmentally benign and application-oriented.

Total removal of organic mercury in industrial wastewater is a crucially important task facing environmental pollution in the current world. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of Au-NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/rGO nanocomposite as not only an efficient nanozyme with oxidase-like activity but also an efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate to determine organic mercury, with the minimum detection concentration as low as 1 × 10 −8 M. According to the binding energy of X-Ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and the free radicals of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, the mechanism of catalytic enhanced degradation is the production of Au-amalgam on Au surface, accelerating the electron transfer and the generation of O 2 •– radicals from oxygen molecules and •CH 3 radicals from the methyl group in MeHg to participate the oxidase-like reaction. Furthermore, the Au-NiFe LDH/rGO nanocomposite is able to degrade and remove 99.9% of organic mercury in two hours without the secondary pollution by Hg 2+ . In addition, the material can be used for the multiple degradation-regeneration cycles in actual applications, which is significant in terms of the environmental and economic point of view. This work may open a new horizon for both highly sensitive detection and thorough degradation of organic mercury in environmental science and technology .

The outbreak of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 urges the development of rapidly and accurately diagnostic methods. Here, one high-sensitivity and point-of-care detection method based on magnetic SERS biosensor composed of Fe 3 O 4 -Au nanocomposite and Au nanoneedles array was developed to detect SARS-CoV-2 directly. Among, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 -Au nanocomposite is applied to capture and separate virus from nasal and throat swabs and enhance the Raman signals of SARS-CoV-2. The magnetic SERS biosensor possessed high sensitivity by optimizing the Fe 3 O 4 -Au nanocomposite. More significantly, the on-site detection of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus was achieved based on the magnetic SERS biosensor with ultra-low limit of detection of 100 copies/mL during 15 mins. Furthermore, the contaminated nasal and throat swabs samples were identified by support vector machine, and the diagnostic accuracy of 100% was obtained. The magnetic SERS biosensor combined with support vector machine provides giant potential as the point-of-care detection tool for SARS-CoV-2.

Coating silica on Au particles has been known to be effective to improve their stability and performance. In this work, we demonstrated a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) assisted approach for preparation of Au@SiO 2 particles in ethanol/water mixtures. At ethanol content of 0.25, Au particles were well dispersed, while at ethanol content of 0.50, the aggregated Au particles were gradually dispersed with increasing CTAB concentration, attributed to the gradual formation of CTAB bilayer on the particle surface. When tetraethyl orthosilicate and ammonia were added directly to the Au particle dispersions, the Au@SiO 2 particles formed at the low ethanol content (0.25) were red in color and spherical in shape with a core composed of single Au particles, and these formed at the medium ethanol content (0.50) were purple in color and fractal-like in shape with a core composed of multiple Au particles.
