Thermal insulation and temperature control are extremely important in numerous human activities. Traditional aerogels with low thermal conductivity are known to facilitate good insulation. Boron nitride (BN) aerogels consist of nanoscale nanofiber units with plentiful porous structures, possessing excellent thermal/electrical insulation and chemical stability. However, these porous materials cannot effectively block heat transmission, despite their low thermal conductivity. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new insulation strategy and explore materials with excellent thermal insulation performance, with special attention to heat transmitted not only through air, but also through thermal regulation by thermal adsorption. Phase change materials (PCMs) are considered promising latent heat storage materials due to their large heat storage capacity, making them promising candidates for highly efficient thermal insulation. However, the flammability of organic PCMs and their susceptibility to leakage during the solid-to-liquid transition seriously limit their wide application. In this study we combined the dual-thermal insulation performance of BN fiber aerogels and PCMs and constructed novel flexible and multifunctional composites with excellent thermal insulation performance using Co-MOF nano-flower cross-linked BN aerogels as interconnected porous substrates to encapsulate paraffin wax (PW) PCMs. The composites exhibited the advantages of BN, Co-MOFs and PCMs, overcoming the drawbacks of single-component materials. The results showed that the latent-heat storage capacity of the BN/Co-MOF/PW composites reached 188.11 J g−1 and the resulting thermal conductivity was as low as 0.0397 W (m−1 K−1), due to high thermal insulation performance. The morphology, flexibility, mechanical performance, and flame retardancy of the constructed BN/Co-MOF/PW composites were systematically investigated, ensuring that the composites could be used for thermal insulation and flame-retardant applications.

Textured Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics were successfully fabricated via hot-press sintering. The effects of h-BN content on the microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal properties were systematically investigated. The results indicate that increasing the h-BN content leads to a continuous decline in both the density and mechanical properties of Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics. By further adjusting the particle size of h-BN, the textured Si 3 N 4 /BN composite ceramics incorporating 15 vol% of 8 μm h-BN exhibit high thermal conductivity (77.5 W m −1 K −1 ) and reliable mechanical properties (707.3 MPa and 8.63 MPa m 1/2 ) at low sintering temperature and short dwelling time (1750 °C for 2 h). Therefore, this textured composite ceramics design offers a novel approach for the rapid fabrication of composite ceramics with high thermal conductivity and demonstrates significant potential in the field of advanced thermal management.

To solve the problem of deterioration of oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance caused by low carbonization of MgO–C refractories, nano-laminated BN modified graphite was prepared by the molten salt method to reinforce unfired MgO–C refractories. The findings revealed that the introduction of nano-laminated BN modified graphite significantly improved the mechanical properties. Moreover, the oxidation index of MgO–C refractories with 4 wt% nano-laminated BN modified graphite was 34% lower than that of the unadded sample, and the residual strength after thermal shock was significantly increased by 224%. Furthermore, incorporating nano-laminated BN modified graphite facilitated the formation of columnar Mg 2 SiO 4 , octagonal columnar MgAl 2 O 4 , and MgO–Mg 2 SiO 4 –MgAl 2 O 4 –Mg 3 B 2 O 6 dense layers, thereby contribute to overall performance improvements.

Given their substantial neutron capture cross-section, extreme hardness, and high chemical and thermal stability, boron-based materials are widely used as building blocks to protect against highly ionizing radiations such as gamma rays and neutrons. Indeed, uncontrolled nuclear radiation exposure can be highly hazardous to radiation workers and the public. In this sense, this work presents an extensive study and experimental evaluation of the nuclear shielding features of hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) based nanocomposite, where bisphenol-A based polybenzoxazine (BA-PBz) was used as matrix. The neutron shielding studies were carried out at the nuclear research reactor of Algeria NUR. The surface treatment of h-BN nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and XPS techniques. The curing behavior and the degradation phenomena of the nanocomposites were evaluated by DSC-TGA analyses. The distribution of h-BN nanoparticles within the polymer matrix was assessed by TEM and SEM. The results showed that the developed boron nitride-based nanocomposite exhibits intriguing shielding performances and good thermal stability. The DSC-TGA tests exhibit high degradation temperature that reach 279°C. The highest performances were obtained at an h-BN concentration of 7 wt%, where the macroscopic cross was found to be (Σ = 3.844 cm –1 ) with a screening ratio of (S = 96.12%), equivalent to a mean free path (λ) of 0.138 cm.

h-BN nanoflakes were treated in three plasma gases (Ar、Ar+H 2 (4:1)、Ar + NH 3 (4:1)) for surface modification. The structure characterization (XRD, IR, XPS etc.) of h-BN indicated that the plasma treatment not only enlarged the interlayer distance of h-BN, but also increased the NH/OH surface groups and the ratio of exfoliated h-BN planes. The plasma treated h-BN exhibited better dispersion and stronger Fe 2+ holding ability in acrylic resin than the pristine h-BN, resulting in smaller corrosion current density (i corr ) and larger charge transfer resistance for the acrylic coating on low carbon steel, especially treated in Ar + NH 3 (4:1).

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powders were fabricated by the combustion synthesis with B/KNO3/HMX (octogen) mixtures as reactants. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were adopted to investigate the phase composition and the chemical composition of the products, respectively. The morphology and resistance to oxidation were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetry (TGA), respectively. The characterization results showed that the h-BN which was produced through this method has high purity and exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation. The purity of h-BN is improved with the increasing content of HMX in reactants with boron carbide (B4C) and boron oxide (B2O3) as main impurity, but conversely, the yields are obviously decreased. Taking the comprehensive consideration of the purity and the yields together, the optimal molar ratio of B/KNO3/HMX is 10 : 1 : 4. In addition, the experimental results indicated that the crystalline grain size grows with the increasing content of HMX. The method explored in this study does not need expensive processing facilities and equipment, which is a preferable approach for the laboratory to prepare h-BN of high purity.

The MgO-doped hexagonal boron nitride (MgO-h-BN) nanomaterials were designed as a support for Palladium (Pd) catalysts for CO oxidation reaction. The catalytic properties of Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst was investigated and compared with Pd/h-BN catalyst. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results suggested that the PdO nanoparticles with small grain sizes (ca. 8 nm) were effectively dispersed on the surface of MgO, and the MgO were deposited on the h-BN nanosheets in the Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that a small amount of Mg 2+ embedded into the B vacancies of h-BN nanosheets in the Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst. More significantly, a large amount of adsorbed oxygen appeared near the B vacancies of Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst. The experiments outcomes of diffuse reflectance fourier transform spectra analysis of CO (CO-DRIFT) indicated that the carbonate/formate species were easily decomposed to CO 2 on the Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst than Pd/h-BN catalyst, which might be a reason why the Pd/MgO(5)-h-BN catalyst had high CO oxidation activity. According to above analyses, we provide a new insight for the MgO-h-BN nanomaterials for Pd catalysts for application in CO oxidation reaction.

BN-supported Pt catalysts were prepared by an impregnation method using Pt(NH 3 ) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 as metal precursors and tested in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. It was found that the Pt/BN catalyst exhibited a high performance for the selective C O hydrogenation at room temperature. A selectivity of over 85% towards cinnamyl alcohol at a cinnamaldehyde conversion of over 95% could be obtained. The effects of supports and Pt particle sizes were explored by N 2 physisorption , XRD, TEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, TPD , H 2 -TPR, XPS, CO-DRIFTS, etc. The influences of solvents and operation conditions were investigated, and a simplified kinetics test was also carried out. The comparison of different supports suggested that BN with an inert surface and few acid-base sites possibly favors a simple adsorption mode of cinnamaldehyde dependent only on the supported Pt particles, resulting in a high selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol. While the abundant acid-base surface sites on the Pt/Al 2 O 3 or Pt/SiO 2 , possibly associated with the multiple adsorption modes of cinnamaldehyde, had an adverse effect on the selective C O hydrogenation. The investigation of Pt size effect showed that large Pt particles with few low coordinated Pt sites displayed a higher selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol than small Pt particles with more low coordinated Pt sites on the Pt/BN catalysts. It was also revealed that water is a suitable solvent, and the presence of water in a mixture solvent is crucial for achieving a high activity of the Pt/BN in cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation.

Due to the rapid development of multifunctional and miniaturized electronic devices, the demand for polymer composites with mechanical properties, high-thermal conductivity, and dielectric properties is increasing. Therefore, the heat dissipation capacity of the composite must be improved. To solve this problem, we report a glass fabric (GF)/boron nitride (BN) network with a highly thermally conductive hetero-structured formed using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an adhesive. The GF and BN are furtherly modified by (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) for better thermal conductivity enhancement. When the BN content is 30%, the thermal diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity of obtained PVA-mBN@mGF (PBG) are 2.843 mm 2 /s and 1.394 W/(m K), respectively. Epoxy (EP) resin is then introduced to prepare PBG/mBN/EP laminated composites via the hot pressing method as applied as thermal conductive composites. A highest thermal conductivity of 0.67 W/(m K) of PBG/mBN/EP laminated composites is obtained, three times higher than that of pure EP. In addition, the PBG/mBN/EP laminated composites also present favorable mechanical, electrically insulating, and dielectric properties.

Copper-based heterogeneous catalysts commonly exhibit uncontrolled growth of copper species under reaction conditions because of the low Hüttig temperature (surface mobility of atoms) and Tamman temperature (bulk mobility) for copper at just 134 and 405 °C, respectively. Herein, we report the use of defect-enriched hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNSs) as a support to anchor the Cu species, which resulted in superior dispersion of the Cu species. The obtained Cu/BNS catalyst was highly stable for ethanol dehydrogenation , with a high selectivity of 98% for producing acetaldehyde and an exceptionally high acetaldehyde productivity of 7.33 g AcH g cat –1 h –1 under a weight hourly space velocity of 9.6 g EtOH g cat –1 h –1 . The overall performance of our designed catalyst far exceeded that of most reported heterogeneous catalysts in terms of the stability of the Cu species and the yield of acetaldehyde in this reaction. The hydroxyl groups at the defect edges of BNS were responsible for the stabilization of the copper species, and the metal-support interaction was reinforced through charge transfer, as evidenced by coupling atomic resolution images with probe molecule infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A designed in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy study of ethanol/acetaldehyde adsorption further revealed that Cu/BNS favored ethanol adsorption while suppressing acetaldehyde adsorption and further side reactions. This study demonstrates a new method for designing highly dispersed Cu-based catalysts with high durability.

Carbon-based aerogels have been widely accepted to be a type of promising electromagnetic microwave (EMW) absorber due to their merits of low density, high specific surface area, and a three-dimensional porous structure, but the contradiction between their strong dielectric loss capacity and poor impedance matching often results in a weak EMW absorption capacity. In this work, a cellulose derived carbon/BN composite aerogel (CCA/BN) was prepared by a simple freeze-drying and high-temperature pyrolysis process. Here, both the BN loading and pyrolysis temperature could directly affect the dielectric loss capacity of the prepared CCA/BN. Specifically, the abundant interfaces between BN and the carbon matrix and the pyrolysis-generated carbon defects contributed to the polarization loss, and the BN loading and pyrolysis temperature dependent electrical conductivity affected the conduction loss. More importantly, good impedance matching was achieved by adjusting the BN loading and pyrolysis temperature, enabling as much EMW as possible to enter the absorber to be dissipated. What's more, the porous structure also contributed to enhanced EMW absorption efficiency through multiple reflection/scattering inside the material. As a result, CCA/BN with 10 wt% BN and a pyrolysis temperature of 680 °C (CCA/BN10-680) exhibited a superior EMW absorption performance with a minimum RL value (RLmin) of −49.2 dB at 11.28 GHz and 3.75 mm thickness and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) of 8.16 GHz (9.68–17.84 GHz) at 3.45 mm thickness. This study provides a reliable reference for preparing a highly efficient biomass carbon based EMW absorber.

High-efficiency and temperature-insensitive microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) are ideal for high-temperature electromagnetic attenuation. Herein, the titanium nitride/boron nitride (TiN/BN) composite with TiN as the loss unit and BN as the impedance matching unit has been constructed by the in-situ synthesis method. The insulating BN not only effectively regulates and optimizes the conductivity and impedance matching of the material but also imparts steady cyclic microwave absorption properties. The steady dielectric loss ensures that TiN/BN composite has robust high-temperature absorption properties at X-band, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −16.74 dB at 873 K and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.26 GHz in the temperature range of 293–873 K. Compared with the TiN/SiO 2 absorbers with a single system, the TiN/BN/SiO 2 composite keeps reliable high temperature absorbing properties at 873 K. This work confirms that wave-transparent materials for dielectric property modulation can resolve poor temperature stability of effective absorption and non-reusability for high-temperature absorbing materials, providing inspirations for designing efficiency high-temperature microwave absorbers.
