In this study, the ion-gelation method was applied to fabricate novel Fe–carbon–bentonite–alginate beads (Fe 0 /C-BABs). Fe 0 /C-BABs could effectively control Fe release during persulfate (PS) activation in N -acetyl- p -aminophenol (APAP) oxidation. A novel two-stage approach that combined Fe 0 /C-BABs and an oyster-shell-filled bed (OSFB) column was developed to address the low pH and high Fe concentration of the effluent of the traditional PS process. The application of the Fe 0 /C-BABs and OSFB column regulated pH levels and Fe release during the advanced oxidation of APAP. The characteristics of Fe 0 /C-BABs were also investigated through scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The long-term operation performance of Fe 0 /C-BABs in a continuous fixed-bed reactor under simultaneous PS and APAP feeding was also evaluated. The effects of initial PS concentration, pH, fixed-bed weight, in-flow rate, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were investigated. Under selected conditions, 86.3% efficiency was achieved during the first stage of APAP degradation (effluent pH of 3.05, Fe contents: 106.25 mg L −1 ). Water quality improved after the effluent was passed through the OSFB column (effluent pH of 6.32, Fe contents: 21.43 mg L −1 ). Moreover, this study analyzed the free radicals and intermediates produced during APAP degradation to identify the possible routes of APAP degradation.

Phosphorus-rich calcium-based bentonite (BM-PCB) was synthesized via a ball milling process and synergistically integrated with smooth vein (SV) to establish a coupled remediation system for Cd-contaminated soil. The combined application of BM-PCB and SV resulted in a 61.28% reduction in bioavailable Cd content, exhibiting 2.81- and 5.13-fold enhancements compared with those of BM-PCB (21.81%) and SV (11.94%) alone, respectively, confirming the existence of a strong synergistic passivation effect. BM-PCB enhanced the Cd enrichment capacity of SV by 2.83 times by promoting root development, subsequently increasing humic acid (HA) production by 33.33% by catalyzing the condensation reactions between phenolic compounds and amino acids following SV incorporation. The interaction between HA and BM-PCB enhanced Cd adsorption by improving the interlayer spacing, pore structure, functional group content, and charge characteristics of BM-PCB. Additionally, the beneficial microorganisms recruited by the coupling of BM-PCB and SV reduced Cd bioavailability as well as facilitated the decomposition and transformation of SV residues, thereby improving soil nutrients. This approach consequently increased the maize yield by 61.31% while concurrently reducing the Cd content in grains to comply with food safety standards. Life cycle assessment confirmed that the proposed BM-PCB+SV system represented a cost-effective and low-environmental-risk “three-in-one” strategy, simultaneously achieving Cd immobilization, soil fertility enhancement, and food security assurance.

Soil contamination with petroleum significantly threatens the ecological equilibrium and human health. In this context, aerobic co-composting of waste heavy oil with agricultural wastes was performed in the present study to remediate petroleum pollutants through four treatments: CK (control), T1 (petroleum pollutant), T2 (petroleum pollutant with bentonite), and T3 (petroleum pollutant with humic acid-modified bentonite). Comprehensive analyses were conducted to determine the physicochemical parameters, enzymatic activities, removal of petroleum pollutants, microbial community structure, and water-extractable organic matter in different composting systems. Structural equation modeling was employed to identify the key factors influencing the removal of petroleum pollutants. According to the results, petroleum pollutant removal percentages of 44.94%, 79.09%, and 79.67% could be achieved with T1, T2, and T3, respectively. In addition, the activities of polyphenol oxidase (51.21 U/g) and catalase (367.91 U/g), which are the enzymes related to petroleum hydrocarbon degradation, were the highest in T3. Moreover, bentonite addition to the treatment increased the nitrate nitrogen storage in the compost from 10.95 mg/kg in T1 to 18.63 and 17.41 mg/kg in T2 and T3, respectively. Humic acid-modified bentonite could enhance the degree of compost humification , thereby leading to a higher-quality compost product. Collectively, these findings established bentonite addition as an efficient approach to enhance the compost remediation of petroleum pollutants.

The phenomenon that calcium alginate does not exhibit high adsorption capacity as a carrier material has not been reasonably explained or solved. In this paper, a new viewpoint that the orbital energy level of metal ions and the binding degree of the α-l-guluronate and β-d-mannuronate units affect the adsorption performance of the composite was innovatively proposed. Taking barium alginate (BA) as an example, the possibility of replacing calcium alginate is discussed. Barium alginate/graphene oxide (BA/GO) membranes and three-dimensional (3D) barium alginate-bentonite-graphene oxide derived (3D-BA) hydrogels were prepared by vacuum freeze-drying to remove methylene blue . The structure and morphology of the prepared adsorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . The effects of adsorbent dosage, doping ratio, temperature, contact time, pH value and initial dye concentration on the adsorption performance of BA composites were investigated. The adsorption capacities of the BA/GO and 3D-BA materials were 1011.3 and 710.3 mg/g, respectively. The BA/GO membrane exhibited stable filtration performance against high concentrations of dyes. Benefiting from the strong interaction between bentonite , sodium alginate and Ba 2+ , the 3D-BA hydrogel showed higher thermal stability and better adsorption efficiency than other materials. The Elovich kinetic model and Sips equation can appropriately describe the adsorption process . The results show that barium alginate is a better carrier material than calcium alginate.

Magnetic bentonite (MB) is a cheap, effective and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of many pollutants. However, further enhancing the adsorption performance of pristine MB and eliminating the instability of Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles in MB are vital and urgent for practical applications. Based on the principles of washing mesh bag and octopus tentacle, mesh-bag-like modifiers with tentacle-like structure of octopus were synthesized via grafted reaction of polyethylenimine (PEI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to cover MB. As compared with the pristine MB, CMC-MB and PEI-MB, the magnetic bentonite adsorbent co-modified by PEI and CMC (CMC/PEI-MB) exhibited more multi-adsorption sites, stronger capture effects of tentacle for heavy metals and more effective mesh-bag-protection for Fe 3 O 4 . Attributed to these fascinating properties, CMC/PEI-MB achieved faster adsorption rates (the values of k 2 of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were 73.0 g mg ‒1 min ‒1 and 17.4 g mg ‒1 min ‒1 ) and elevated adsorption capacities (760 mg g ‒1 and 470 mg g ‒1 ) for 1500 mg L ‒1 Pb(II) and 1000 mg L ‒1 Cd(II) in a wider pH range (3–7). Moreover, the reutilization rate of Pb(II) and Cd(II) over CMC/PEI-MB still remained 90% after five successive recycles. XRD and FT-IR results indicated that the structure of CMC/PEI-MB was well persevered after desorption, and the corresponding maximum desorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from CMC/PEI-MB were 624 mg g ‒1 and 362 mg g ‒1 within 1 h, respectively. The findings of this study provide an interesting and effective approach for the construction of superior adsorbents basing on customary phenomena for the remediation of heavy metals from wastewater.
