A molecularly imprinted polymer photoelectrochemical (MIP-PEC) sensor based on bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) is described for the determination of the plasticizer dioctyl phthalate (DOP). Bi 2 S 3 was used as the photoelectrical converter of the sensor, and visible light was utilized as the excitation source. The molecular imprinting film was prepared through the electropolymerization of monomers in the presence of DOP. Under optimal experimental conditions, the photoelectrochemical response was linearly proportional to the logarithm of the DOP concentration in the 0.5–70 pM DOP concentration range, and the detection limit was 0.1 pM. The method is highly stable and reproducible. It was applied to the determination of DOP in spiked water samples.
A novel molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor with high sensitivity and high selectivity based on Bi 2 S 3 was developed for dioctyl phthalate detection. Bi 2 S 3 was firstly used as a photoelectric converter in photoelectrochemical sensor to improve the sensitivity of the sensor. Combining photocurrent measurement with molecular imprinting technique makes the sensor highly selective.

The rational design of semiconductor photoanodes with sufficient light absorption, efficient photogenerated carrier separation, and fast charge transport is crucial for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Incorporating a small-band-gap semiconductor to a large-band-gap material with matched energy band position is a promising route to improve the light harvesting and charge transport. Herein, we report the fabrication of a three-dimensional heterojunction with uniform Bi2S3 nanorods on WO3 nanoplates by hydrothermal process and chemical bath deposition. The seed layer strategy was used to assist the growth of Bi2S3 nanorods for perfect interface contact between WO3 and Bi2S3. The as-prepared WO3/Bi2S3 composite exhibited a much enhanced photocurrent (5.95 mA/cm2 at 0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), which is 35 and 1.4 times higher than those of pristine WO3 and WO3/Bi2S3 composite without a seed layer, respectively. In addition, higher incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (68.8%) and photoconversion efficiency (1.70%) were achieved. The enhancement mechanism was investigated in detail, and the sufficient light absorption, efficient charge transport, and high carrier density simultaneously contribute to the improved PEC activity. These findings will open up new opportunities to develop other highly efficient heterostructures as photoelectrodes for PEC applications.

A series of Bi 2 S 3 /(BiO) 2 CO 3 composite photocatalysts with different loadings of amorphous Bi 2 S 3 were successfully synthesized through an ultrasonic-assisted ion-exchange reaction between thioacetamide (CH 3 CSNH 2 ) and (BiO) 2 CO 3 , and characterized by XRD, XPS, BET, EELS, EDX, SEM, TEM/HRTEM, UV–Vis, and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. The results of TEM/HRTEM, EELS, and EDX indicate that the composite catalyst Bi 2 S 3 /(BiO) 2 CO 3 has been successfully synthesized with the deposited Bi 2 S 3 present in amorphous state on the surface of (BiO) 2 CO 3 . The activities of the catalysts for RhB degradation under visible light show that the catalyst prepared under ultrasonic is more active than the one synthesized without ultrasonic. The optimized sample Bi 2 S 3 /(BiO) 2 CO 3 (U5.0) exhibits a much higher activity, about 4.8 times to that of pure (BiO) 2 CO 3 . Based upon the band structures of Bi 2 S 3 /(BiO) 2 CO 3 , it is deduced that the migration of the visible light-induced electrons from the conduction band of Bi 2 S 3 to that of (BiO) 2 CO 3 should have facilitated the separation of photogenerated carriers, as confirmed by the suppressed photoluminescence spectra. Using different scavengers, the ·O 2
− and holes are clearly identified as the main oxidative species for RhB photodegradation. In light of these observations, a potential photocatalytic mechanism of RhB degradation over Bi 2 S 3 /(BiO) 2 CO 3 is proposed.

Two-dimensional Bi2S3 is considered a better photocatalyst when combined with CdS. To deeply understand electronic structures between CdS and Bi2S3, CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell nanorods (NRs) were synthesized with a two-step hydrothermal method, and CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 composites were obtained with MoS2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of CdS@Bi2S3 NRs. Then, the energy band alignments in CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 were constructed from XPS and UPS measurements, and dual z-scheme CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructures were confirmed from charge transfer with electron spin resonance (ESR) signals of •O2– and •OH. Finally, the photocatalytic hydrogen activities were carried out with the prepared samples. The results showed that the optimized CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell NRs have a hydrogen production rate of 4.29 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 8.4 times higher than that of the pure CdS nanorods, and the optimized CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructure has a hydrogen production rate of 8.72 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 17 times higher than that of the pure CdS NRs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the dual z-scheme heterostructure and full-spectrum absorption; the former is favorable for the efficient separation of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and the latter is beneficial to the production of more photogenerated carriers. The studies will be helpful to understand the electronic structures of Bi2S3 and the related heterostructures.

Antibiotic pollution has posed environmental risks, and the crucial point lies in the elimination efficiency of antibiotics from wastewater. Herein, a ternary-structured B-TiO 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /PCs (photonic crystals) film, in which B-TiO 2 was a blend of anatase and rutile crystalline phases, was fabricated to evaluate the efficiency of antibiotic photodegradation under visible light irradiation. The synthesized B-TiO 2 (80 %)/Bi 2 S 3 /PCs(458) film exhibited superior photocatalytic efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), with a degradation rate 7.56 times greater than that of pristine B-TiO 2 . These findings are closely related to the excellent photoelectron separation of the heterojunction between B-TiO 2 and Bi 2 S 3 , as well as the bandgap reflection effect and light localization effect of the PCs . Notably, the B-TiO 2 (80 %)/Bi 2 S 3 /PCs(458) film also displayed favourable degradation performance for ofloxacin (OFLX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), with degradation rates of 83.98 % and 72.79 %, respectively. Active species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements revealed superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) as the main active species. Furthermore, potential photodegradation pathways were proposed by analyzing the degradation intermediates of TC and OFLX via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS). In a word, the B-TiO 2 (80 %)/Bi 2 S 3 /PCs(458) film exhibited high efficiency in the treatment of antibiotic pollutants, thereby offering promising prospects for practical application.

The construction of S-scheme heterojunctions with oxygen vacancies (OVs) is an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity. In this pioneering study, we successfully fabricated Bi12O17Cl2/Bi2S3 S-scheme heterojunctions with abundant OVs (ROV-BOC/BS) using an anion exchange method. The in situ growth of Bi2S3 (BS) nanorods on OVs-rich Bi12O17Cl2 (ROV-BOC) nanosheets resulted in an interconnected reticulated structure. This structure not only increased the specific surface area of the composite but also established a tightly bound heterojunction, further enhancing the OVs content in the composites. The OVs-induced defect levels provide additional channels for photogenerated charge migration. The synergy between the heterojunction and OVs improved the light absorption and carrier separation efficiency. Consequently, the optimized ROV-BOC/BS-0.1 achieved 95.52% Cr(VI) removal efficiency within 120 min, with apparent reaction rate constants 5.39 and 23.86 times higher than those of pure ROV-BOC and BS, respectively. This investigation provides crucial guidance for designing novel S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with abundant OVs.

Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x nanomaterials were successfully prepared through a simple hydrothermal method. Various methods were used for their characterization, including XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, and BET, along with testing their gas-sensing properties. The results showed that the response value to 100 ppm ammonia at room temperature reached 107%, which was 14.1 times higher than that of pure few-layer MXene. After undergoing anti-humidity interference testing, we observed that Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited a higher response value in real-time monitoring of ammonia as humidity increased. Specifically, under 90% humidity conditions, its response value reached 1.32 times that of normal humidity conditions. This exceptional moisture resistance ensures that the sensor can maintain stability, and even exhibit superior performance, in harsh environments. Therefore, it possesses excellent selectivity, high-moisture-resistance, and long-term stability, making it significant in the field of medical and health monitoring. Graphical abstract

Defects can tune the band structure of semiconductors, thereby reconfiguring the corresponding heterojunctions. In this study, coralloidal Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructures rich in sulfur vacancies were successfully developed via a one-step hydrothermal method with content regulation of the sulfur source. In 2 S 3 nanosheets are evenly distributed along Bi 2 S 3 nanorod clusters, imparting a unique coralloidal structure and compact interfacial contact that accelerates the transportation of photoinduced electrons and holes. Moreover, the sulfur vacancy strengthens the light absorption and enables staggered energy band alignment for Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructures, which further promotes charge carrier separation. Owing to these favorable features, the coralloidal Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructure with rich sulfur vacancies exhibited a high photocatalytic efficiency for Cr(VI) reduction, whose reaction rate constant is 34.9, 8.1 and 1.9-fold enhancements compared with those of Bi 2 S 3 , In 2 S 3 , and the Bi 2 S 3 @In 2 S 3 heterostructure with poor sulfur vacancies, respectively. For simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and antibiotic (tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) degradation under visible light, the excellent Cr(VI) reduction performance was kept and the degradation rates of the antibiotics clearly increased (more than 25%) compared with those of the reactions in the corresponding solo system, which was due to the synergistic effect of efficient utilization of photoinduced electrons and holes. This article provides valuable insight and guidance for the design of defective heterostructures and the treatment of complex water pollutants.

Herein, we develop a novel composite coating with excellent self-healing and anticorrosion properties activated by photothermal responsive hollow core-shell nanofillers. A photothermal heterojunction Co 9 S 8 @Bi 2 S 3 was prepared and integrated into polyurethane containing disulfide bonds. It is found that the heterojunction has enhanced the light absorption capacity and has increased the number and lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, making more photogenerated charges pass through the heterojunction interface by reducing interface transfer resistance and releasing heat as well. Under 808 nm near-infrared light irradiation, the photothermal effect of Co 9 S 8 @Bi 2 S 3 can trigger the reconstruction of dynamic disulfide bonds and reversible hydrogen bonds simultaneously to heal coating scratches. The surface characterization and electrochemical test results manifest that the coating containing 2 wt% 10 %-Co 9 S 8 @Bi 2 S 3 nanofillers displayed excellent self-healing and anti-corrosive capabilities. The self-healing efficiency of nearly 90 % was achieved after five-time cutting-healing cycles on the coating. The protection performance of the initial immersion stage could be restored by nearly 100 % after five-time self-healing, and the low-frequency impedance modulus was above 10 8 Ω cm 2 even after 60 days of immersion. This work would provide a new tactic for developing multi-cycle self-healing coatings triggered by photothermal effects.

A photocatalyst of Ag 2 S/AgI-Bi 2 S 3 /BiOI was synthesized with Z -scheme heterojunctions simply by the S 2− -I − anion exchange route showing broad visible light response and enhanced photogenerated carriers properties. The yielded Ag 2 S/AgI-Bi 2 S 3 /BiOI could feature the reactive active sites of Bi 2 S 3 /BiOI and Ag 2 S/AgI heterojunctions , serving as the photogenerated electron donors and photogenerated electron acceptors , respectively. Ag bridges were generated to ensure the construction of Z -scheme strategy, which further improved the migration direction of charge carriers in nanocomposites. Moreover, the analysis of photoluminescence spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy could testified the functions of heterojunctions, which dramatically achieved the enhanced separation and transferring capacity of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in photocatalyst, respectively. In addition, Ag 2 S/AgI-Bi 2 S 3 /BiOI with large specific surface area facilitated the efficient photocatalytic removal of salicylic acid (SA) (up to 89.2%) under visible light. Favorable photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) were obtained in pure water driven by the visible light. Besides, by the results of capture experiments, DMPO spin trapping ESR spectra and band structures analysis, the Z -scheme manner of the nanocomposites could promote the reduction ability of photo-generated electrons so as to produce numerous ·O 2 − during the photocatalytic reactions toward the photocatalytic SA removal and H 2 O 2 production.

In this work, a sensitive and reliable photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor array integrated on a single electrode was developed for the spatially addressable detection of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), using Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 2 S 3 /Ag 2 S nanodendrites as the substrate electrode material. The Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 2 S 3 structure was grown in situ on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode to form large-area nanoarrays, whose uniform distribution helps minimize performance variations across different regions and enables light-addressable detection. Furthermore, Ag 2 S, a narrow-bandgap semiconductor with excellent photoelectric properties, was incorporated into the Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 2 S 3 system to enhance the photoelectrochemical response. The resulting Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 2 S 3 /Ag 2 S-modified ITO electrode was partitioned into five independent regions using insulating stickers, allowing addressable and continuous detection of multiple samples. Since the entire sensor array was fabricated in a single preparation step, inter-regional variability was significantly reduced, enabling the application of a self-calibration strategy to further improve sensitivity and accuracy. Under optimal conditions, the PEC sensor array detected NSE over a concentration range of 0.01–100 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 2.0 pg/mL (S/N = 3). The sensor also exhibited high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, demonstrating its strong potential for real-sample applications.

Due to their high abundance, low cost, and low toxicity, Bi 2 S 3 -based thermoelectric materials without Te are significantly promising for eco-friendly and scalable applications. However, the ZT value of Bi 2 S 3 -based is not high enough and must be further improved. The rare-earth element doping is a promising strategy for synergistically enhancing the electrical and thermal transport properties. This study selected GaTe and YbBr 3 for co-doping in Bi 2 S 3 polycrystals using a solid-state reaction and spark plasma sintering, which enabled simultaneous modulation of the band structure and carrier concentration for significantly enhanced thermoelectric and mechanical properties. Specifically, the synergistic optimization of electrical and phonon transport was initially achieved through GaTe doping in Bi 2 S 3 , which effectively reduced the lattice thermal conductivity while enhancing electrical conductivity. However, the improvement in thermoelectric performance with GaTe doping alone remained limited. Br substituted S to introduce extra electrons, while Yb replaced Bi to reduce the bandgap from 1.38 to 1.05 eV. The two effects synergistically optimized the electrical transport properties of the matrix. As a result, the optimized Bi 2 S 3 + 0.5 wt% GaTe +1.0 wt% YbBr 3 sample achieved an exceptional average power factor of 475.4 μW m −1 K −2 over 323–773 K. Additionally, point defects, dislocations, and micropores induced by the second phase contributed to strong phonon scattering, leading to a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.56 W m −1 K −1 at 773 K. Consequently, a peak ZT value of 0.67 at 773 K and a high average ZT value of 0.45 over 323–773 K were achieved, which were relatively higher than other values reported in the literature. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were improved, with hardness increasing from 2.55 to 2.93 GPa, making Bi 2 S 3 more deformation-resistant and durable. This study showed that co-doping rare earth elements was an effective approach for enhancing the thermoelectric and mechanical properties of the Bi 2 S 3 material.
