Dual-method construction of Bi5O7I/Bi2WO6 heterostructures for efficient photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline and bacterial inactivation

Guanlong Yu,Xinyu Liao,Xinkui Wang,Jiani zhang,Anni Zheng,Yuxi Cheng,Songcheng He

A Bi 5 O 7 I/Bi 2 WO 6 nanocomposite with hierarchical spherical structure was successfully prepared by co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. Notably, the composite (denoted as BB-50) exhibited optimal photocatalytic performance when the Bi 5 O 7 I:Bi 2 WO 6 weight ratio was 50%, with the degradation rate of oxytetracycline (OTC) reaching 98.3% within 90   min and the inhibition rate of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacteria reaching 100% within the same time frame. Characterization experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that the formation of the heterojunction induced an internal electric field at the interface, consistent with the transfer mechanism of photogenerated carriers characteristic of type-I heterojunctions. In addition, the formation of the Bi 5 O 7 I/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction promoted the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including ·OH, h + , and e − . The formation of the Bi 5 O 7 I/Bi 2 WO 6 composite not only enhanced the light-absorption capacity (with a red-shift to 433   nm), but also greatly strengthened the adsorption ability, as the specific surface area of BB-50 was higher than those of the Bi 5 O 7 I and Bi 2 WO 6 components, respectively. In particular, the specific surface area of BB-50 was found to be 10.2 and 18.7 times higher than those of Bi 5 O 7 I and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. This complex effect also improved the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity. The present composite exhibited considerable potential for the efficient removal of OTC and E. coli , providing a feasible approach for reducing water environmental pollution.

Embedding Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanospheres into the interval of Bi-Bi2WO6 microplates by electrostatic attraction for photocatalytic H2 production

Jingbiao Ge,Huihui Xue,Yang Yang,Sujuan Zhang,Xiuzhen Zheng,Shifu Chen

To optimize the performance of photocatalytic H 2 production, various effective strategies have been developed to design highly efficient photocatalysts, including morphology control, synergistic reaction design, and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs). In this study, a highly efficient Bi-Bi 2 WO 6 /Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (BBWO/ZCS) composite was synthesized by embedding Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) nanospheres into Bi-Bi 2 WO 6 (BBWO) microsheets through electrostatic self-assembly method. Although BBWO show poor activity in H 2 generation, it largely improves the performance of ZCS under visible light illumination. When the mass of BBWO is 3 % in the composite, BBWO/ZCS exhibited the highest H 2 production rate (28.0 mmol g −1  h −1 ), much higher than that of pure ZCS. Meanwhile, its apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) is high to 8.45 % at 400 nm. The design of the BBWO/ZCS composite not only improves the migration and utilization efficiency of PCCs, but also offers valuable theoretical insights and experimental references for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Radical-driven cooperative photocatalytic coupling of glucose oxidation and H2O2 production using Ni-doped Bi2WO6/CN heterojunction

Yanmei Zheng,Yinghua Zhang,Ziwei Hang,Jianghong Ouyang,Qichao Chen,Xinli Guo,Zupeng Chen

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) photosynthesis coupled with biomass upgrading is a promising alternative to traditional oxidative routes, yet its efficiency is fundamentally constrained by slow water oxidation kinetics and reliance on sacrificial agents. Herein, a Ni-doped Bi 2 WO 6 /graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-BWO/CN) heterojunction is developed to investigate the coupling of H 2 O 2 photosynthesis and glucose oxidation, with an H 2 O 2 production rate of 2.275 mM h − 1 (2.5 times higher than BWO), alongside a glucose conversion rate of 27 % and 82 % selectivity toward arabinose. The enhanced performance is attributed to the Ni doping in the BWO lattice, which modulates the electronic structure and suppresses charge recombination. In situ FT-IR spectra reveal a superoxide-mediated two-electron reduction pathway for H 2 O 2 synthesis as well as glucose oxidation via ·O 2 − -mediated and ·OH-driven intermediate mechanisms. This strategy advances the sustainable production of H 2 O 2 and high-value chemicals through rational photocatalyst design.

Photogenerated carrier-directed modulation of WO3/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction for marine anti-corrosion and anti-fouling

Tian Jing,Cheng Yuanhang,Zhang Zhenyu,Zhao Zhibo,Xu Zhenxu,Li Jiarun

Metal corrosion and biofouling in marine environments significantly constrain the long-term service performance of marine equipment. Traditional protection strategies suffer from issues such as low efficiency and insufficient environmental friendliness, necessitating the development of novel, highly efficient, and stable anti-corrosion and anti-fouling materials. In this study, a dual-functional WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme heterojunction photoelectrode was fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal method. The results of UV–visible diffuse reflectance, Mott-Schottky, as well as density functional theory calculations confirmed the successful construction of the Z-type heterojunction. The construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction not only enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers but also directionally regulates their migration pathway, preserving photogenerated electrons with strong reducing capability and photogenerated holes with strong oxidizing capability, therefore, the potential of 316L stainless steel could be negatively shifted by 200 mV, while the sterilization rate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa reached 100% within 60 min.

Non-equilibrium adsorption in post-illumination dark-stage tetracycline removal over Ni(OH)2-modified Bi2WO6 photocatalysts

Tingyang Ming,Miao Hu,Wei Zhu

Non-equilibrium adsorption contributes to post-illumination TC removal. • Bi 2 WO 6 /Ni(OH) 2 shows enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic kinetics. • Charge storage is unlikely to dominate the dark-stage behavior. • Acid extraction reveals adsorption-related surface retention of TC. • Light-off timing supports adsorption relaxation after photocatalysis. The photocatalytic removal of antibiotic pollutants has been widely investigated for water purification, where continued pollutant decay after light irradiation (“dark-stage removal”) represents an intriguing post-illumination phenomenon in photocatalytic systems. Although charge storage provides an important explanation for post-illumination activity, adsorption relaxation after light-off may also contribute to dark-stage removal. In this work, a Ni(OH) 2 -modified Bi 2 WO 6 system was employed as a representative model to investigate non-equilibrium adsorption in photocatalytic dark-stage tetracycline removal. The photocatalytic performance under visible light was first evaluated to establish a high-activity reaction system. Subsequently, a combination of acid extraction, solution–surface distribution analysis, and charge probing experiments was used to clarify the contributions of adsorption redistribution and charge storage. The results demonstrate that charge storage is negligible and unlikely to dominate the dark-stage behavior in the Bi 2 WO 6 /Ni(OH) 2 system. Instead, the apparent dark-stage removal is primarily governed by a non-equilibrium adsorption process, arising from the imbalance between rapid photocatalytic consumption and adsorption–desorption dynamics during illumination. After light-off, the system gradually relaxes toward equilibrium, leading to continued redistribution of tetracycline from the solution to the catalyst surface. This work reveals a photocatalysis-induced non-equilibrium adsorption pathway for dark-stage removal, providing a complementary perspective for understanding post-illumination behavior in photocatalytic systems. [Co(bpy)3]2+ sensitized Bi2WO6/CdS photocatalyst to enhance synergistic levofloxacin degradation with simultaneous H2 production

Hengyi Wang,Yong-Fei Li,Xueli Niu,Peiyun Dai,Mingyu Dou,Guang Yang,Fatao Gong,Hongjie Zhu,Hua Yang,Jianmin Dou

Due to the consumption of traditional fossil fuels, human society faces global energy shortages and increasing environmental pollution problems. To address water pollution caused by the abuse of antibiotics and to promote green hydrogen production. In this paper, a Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS S-scheme heterojunction was prepared to realize the photocatalytic levofloxacin (LEV) degradation coupled with hydrogen production reaction. Under the introduction of [Co(bpy) 3 Cl 2 ] (CoBpy) as a molecular photosensitizer, the hydrogen production activity of Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS increased remarkably to 5395.9 μmol g −1  h −1 , meanwhile, the degradation rate of LEV could reach 87.5 %, which was much higher than that of the pure phase material and exhibited excellent stability over five cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic activity originates from the S-scheme heterojunction mechanism that enables the oxidizing and reducing abilities of the material to be fully exploited, meanwhile the sensitization of CoBpy further optimizes the charge transfer pathway, which realizes the combination of visible-light-driven wastewater treatment and green hydrogen production. Our findings provide an efficient and safe approach to environmental remediation and green energy production for a sustainable energy future.

Enhanced LED light-driven antibacterial system with efficient charge transfer coordinated by Bi2WO6/TiO2 Z-scheme heterojunction

Yujia Wang,Zhigang Zhang,Yijiang Chen,Zhengfa Zhu,Hao Wang,Xiaoning Tang

Designing efficient antimicrobials for the rapid disinfection of water is increasingly critical owing to the rising threat of pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, direct Z-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 heterojunctions were constructed using a simple in situ hydrothermal method. The optimal Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 Z-scheme heterojunction inhibited 98.80 % of Escherichia coli (5 × 10 8  CFU mL −1 ) at 0.35 mg mL −1 and 99.33 % of Staphylococcus aureus (5 × 10 8  CFU mL −1 ) at 0.5 mg mL −1 after 10 min of light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiation. Furthermore, in antibiotic degradation experiments, Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 had a 92.91 % removal rate for ciprofloxacin with a pseudo-second-order degradation rate constant ( k ) of 0.056 min −1 after 240 min of irradiation. The antibacterial mechanism of Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 was systematically investigated and confirmed to occur by LED light-driven surface activation and efficient charge transfer. The surface and interfacial structures of the Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 samples were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antibacterial mechanism was studied by controlled experiments and electron spin resonance analyses, which revealed that the primary antibacterial mechanism of Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 is oxidative sterilisation via generated reactive oxygen species. Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyse the charge-transfer pathway in Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 , which demonstrated that the spatial separation of the redox-active sites extended the lifetimes of the photogenerated carriers, enhancing the oxidative destruction of bacteria. This comprehensive understanding paves the way for the design of new Z-type heterojunction photocatalytic materials for antimicrobial applications.

Novel hydrostable Z-scheme Ag/CsPbBr3/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst for effective degradation of Rhodamine B in aqueous solution

Jia-Rong Xue,Rong-Chao Xue,Pei-Yao Chen,Yong Wang,Li-Ping Yu

In this study, a hydrostable Z-scheme Ag/CsPbBr 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst was designed and fabricated for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The structural instability of CsPbX 3 perovskites in water is one of the main obstacles that restrict their practical application in photocatalytic wastewater treatment. The photocatalyst was prepared in three steps: passivation of CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), construction of a heterojunction between MPA-passivated CsPbBr 3 NCs and Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets, and doping Ag nanoparticles as charge mediators in the heterojunction. The as-obtained 5%Ag/20%CsPbBr 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 exhibits good stability and excellent photocatalytic activity. The degradation rate is 93.9% in 120 min, which is 4.41 times than that of Bi 2 WO 6 .

Sensitive photoelectrochemical detection of azomycin on Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 heterojunction using ascorbic acid as a hole-trapping agent

Zhe Yu,Fudan Zhu,Tianxiao Chen,Jiayao Li,Qingliang Feng,Fengchun Yang,Xin Zhang

The establishment of an efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) assay is of great significance for sensitive detection. The Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction is fabricated as photoactive material with the utilization of ascorbic acid (AA) as a hole-trapping agent for PEC sensing azomycin, an emerging antibiotic contaminant. The Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 shows an intense photocurrent response, which is due to the hierarchical structure for abundant active sites, regulated electron coupling for charge transfer and the suitable band gap for the enhancement of light absorption. The hole-trapping agent AA is used to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and amplify the generated photocurrent signal. The constructed PEC sensor achieves the excellent performance for azomycin detection with a wide linear range and low detection limit, revealing an enormous potential of this strategy as a PEC platform for the sensitive detection of various targets.

Synthesis and characterization of Ag/Bi2WO6/GO composite for the fast degradation of tylosin under visible light

Dong Hao,Yin Yongyuan,Guo Xuetao

Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 /graphene oxide composite with excellent photocatalytic properties was successfully prepared by hydrothermal-photoreduction synergistic method and is applied in antibiotics degradation. The structure and properties of as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by Fourier infrared spectrum (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), specific surface area analyzer (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results indicated that Ag and Bi 2 WO 6 were uniformly loaded on the surface of graphene oxide. In addition, graphene oxide with conjugated carbon network structures has been applied as a photocatalyst supporter for the high electronic conductivity and the large reactive sites. Compared with the pure graphene oxide, the as-prepared Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 /graphene oxide catalyst exhibited excellent degradation efficiency and stability for degrading tylosin under Xe lamp irradiation. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the photodegradation efficiency of tylosin by Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 /graphene oxide achieved at 98% within 2 h, compared to 50% by pure graphene oxide. The excellent photodegradation ability is caused by the synergetic effect of Ag, Bi 2 WO 6 , and graphene oxide nanoparticles.

Synthesis and application of Bi2WO6 for the photocatalytic degradation of two typical fluoroquinolones under visible light irradiation

Cong Huang,Leilei Chen,Haipu Li,Yanguang Mu,Zhaoguang Yang

Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) was successfully synthesized by a method combining ultrasonic solvothermal treatment and high-temperature calcination. The products were affirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated that calcination could improve the crystallinity and visible light utilization capacity of Bi2WO6. The photodegradation experiments showed that Bi2WO6 calcined at 450 °C for 3 h exhibited better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of norfloxacin and enrofloxacin under visible light irradiation than the catalyst prepared without calcination or calcined at other temperatures. Meanwhile, the effects of the amount of 450-Bi2WO6, the initial concentration of targets, and the pH of the solutions on the degradation were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the removal ratios reached to 92.95% (for norfloxacin) and 94.58% (for enrofloxacin) within 75 min. Furthermore, h+ and ·O2− were identified to affect the photodegradation process significantly, and the possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The as-prepared sample was verified to possess good stability and reusability, suggesting its potential application prospect in the treatment of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

A direct Z-scheme S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 heterostructure for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light

Litao Jia,Pei Yu,Ying Dong,Yonglei Xing,Juan Peng,Gang Ni,Xiaoyong Jin

The decomposition efficiency of refractory organic pollutants depends strongly on the characteristics of the photoanode semiconductors in the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) process. The selection of superior materials with excellent PEC efficiency is a challenge in the practical application of PEC oxidation technology. Herein, a novel S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction photoanode was fabricated using a simple hydrothermal procedure. Compared with Bi2WO6 nanoflowers, the as-prepared S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 photoanode had a large electroactive surface area, low charge transfer resistance, strong light absorption ability, and high separation efficiency for induced photogenerated electron/hole pairs (e−/h+). This relies on the fact that S doping not only controls the morphology of Co3O4 but also changes its intrinsic electronic structure to improve the interlayer polarization. Notably, the Z-scheme heterojunction formed by the combination of S-Co3O4 and Bi2WO6 not only enhances the e−/h+ separation efficiency but also results in a stronger redox ability than that of pure Bi2WO6. In addition, reactive species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests demonstrated that the S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 photoanode plays a dominant role in the degradation of tetracycline (TC) by ˙O2− and ˙OH radicals. Therefore, the prepared S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 photoanode exhibits better PEC performance than Co3O4, S-Co3O4 and Bi2WO6 in the degradation of TC. The optimized S-Co3O4/Bi2WO6 composite showed a degradation rate of 87.4% in 30 mg L−1 TC solution. This work provides a new strategy for the construction of efficient photoelectroanodes.
