Influence of slurry and injection methods on the fabrication of Cf/ZrB2-SiC composite via slurry injection and RMI

Yongsheng Liu,Guoxin Wei,Yawen Ma,Pengcheng Ma,Jianyong Tu,Jingxin Li,Yansong Liu,Shaolin Fu,Yejie Cao,Jian Chen,Yu Pan,Zbigniew Pedzich

To address the issues of long preparation cycle and high cost in fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites, C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite was prepared by slurry injection combined with reactive melt infiltration (RMI). The dispersion and rheological behavior of slurries with different compositions were investigated, as well as the impact of various slurries and injection methods on the three-dimensional filling of porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite. The porosity of porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite was 24.4–37.2% and the bulk density was 1.70–2.36 g/cm 3 after injection and infiltration. The porous C f /ZrB 2 -C composite obtained by double-sided injection has uniform distribution of ceramic phase, and the bulk density and open porosity are 2.36 g/cm 3 and 24.4% when the ceramic content is 70 wt.% in slurry. Additionally, the volume filling rate has increased by 32% compared to single-injection. After 1 h of silicon infiltration at 1450°C, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite were 188.8 MPa and 5.51 MPa·m 1/2 . Compared with other RMI processes, this study showed no significant damage to carbon fibers after low-temperature silicon infiltration, and has certain advantages in mechanical properties. It achieved uniform high solid-content ZrB 2 incorporation and rapid densification, enabling cost-effective short-cycle fabrication of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite.

The mechanical properties and ablation resistance of the Cf/ZrB2-SiC-C composites fabricated using a cost-effective strategy

Tianyang Xia,Qiang Gao,FuShuai Wang,Liancai Xun,Zibin Chen,Ping Hu

Carbon fiber reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites (C f /UHTCMCs) are considered ideal materials for thermal protection components in hypersonic vehicles due to their outstanding overall performance. However, the existing fabrication techniques for C f /UHTCMCs face significant engineering challenges, including high raw material costs and complex processing methods. Here we propose a cost-effective fabrication strategy. This approach ensures the oxidation and ablation resistance of the material by incorporating sufficient ZrB 2 and SiC, followed by filling the remaining pores in the composite with in-situ derived pyrolytic carbon from furfuryl ketone resin, which significantly reduces fabrication costs and enables rapid densification. The C f /ZrB 2 -SiC-C composites produced by this strategy exhibit a flexural strength of 468 ± 18 MPa and a fracture toughness of 18.23 ± 1.14 MPa m 1/2 . Furthermore, the composites remain non-ablative when exposed to temperatures of 2300 °C for extended periods, with a mass ablation rate of only 4.14 × 10 −6  g/(mm 2 ·s) after 400 s of testing. This strategy offers significant design versatility and can be applied to various ultra-high temperature ceramic systems, offering a novel and cost-effective approach to the development of thermal protection materials for hypersonic vehicles.

Mechanical properties and wear resistance of Cf / epoxy resin composites with in-situ grown SiC nanowires on carbon fibers

Binbin Li,Shenghui Qian,Cong Sun,Min Wang,Xiaohong Zhan

Carbon fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites have been utilized as structural and bearing parts in aerospace because of their high specific strength and modulus. To improve the mechanical properties and wear resistance of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites, we propose the in-situ growth of SiC nanowires on the surface of carbon fiber by a Chemical Vapor Deposition method. The effect of the addition of nanowires on the mechanical strength and wear resistance of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites was investigated. The results indicated that the tensile strength and bending strength of SiCnws / Cf / epoxy resin composites increased by 13.8% and 16.2% on the condition that the concentration of Ni(NO3)2 catalyst was 0.1 mol/L, respectively. The improvement of the mechanical properties could be attributed to the mechanical interlocking affection between carbon fiber and SiC nanowires. In addition, due to SiC nanowires with a three-dimensional network structure on the surface of carbon fiber, the stronger adhesive force between epoxy matrix SiC nanowires protected the resin matrix and carbon fiber from abrasion. The wear rate of SiCnws / Cf / epoxy composites was reduced by 98.1%.

Fuel cell type SO2 sensor based on Cu/CF-N sensing electrode and Nafion proton conductor at room temperature

Lingchu Huang,Sitong Feng,Weijia Li,Huaiyuan Sun,Jianyu Zhang,Qi Lu,Tong Wang,Xiaoyong Sun,Rui Han,Xishuang Liang,Fangmeng Liu,Peng Sun,Fengmin Liu,Bin Wu,Geyu Lu

In this work, nitrogen doped carbon fiber loaded copper (Cu/CF-N) sensing electrode and Nafion proton conductor are used to fabricate fuel cell type gas sensors that realize fast response/recovery for SO 2 detection at room temperature . This is the first time that this type of sensor has been used to detect SO 2 . We investigated the effect of Cu content on sensors’ performance, and found that the Cu (20 wt%)/CF based sensor exhibited the highest response. This can be attributed to the optimal Cu content, which exposes the most active sites. Moreover, nitrogen was doped into electrode material to further improve the performance. Nitrogen atoms enhance the conductivity of the material and its ability to adsorb SO 2 . These are confirmed by the complex impedance measurement and TPD analysis. The upgraded Cu/CF-N fuel cell type gas sensor showed a response of − 435.6 nA to 50 ppm SO 2 and a low detection limit of 500 ppb. Significantly, the Cu/CF-N sensor demonstrated short response time (44 s) and recovery time (87 s) at room temperature. Furthermore, with the advantages of no power consumption , excellent selectivity and good repeatability, the fuel cell type gas sensors have broad prospects in the field of room temperature gas detection.

Core–shell rGO/SnO2@CF with wrinkled surface used as structural anode material: high tensile strength and electrochemical stability

Mengjie Feng,Shubin Wang,Jiping Yang,Boming Zhang

As one of the most promising structural anode materials, carbon fibers (CF) have gained much attention. One of the central problems in their application is retaining their tensile strength and simultaneously improving their electrochemical properties. Herein, we report reduced graphene oxide/SnO2@carbon fibers (rGO/SnO2@CF) with wrinkled surfaces, fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method followed by heat treatment. This material exhibits prominent tensile properties, improved reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability and significantly enhanced first cycle coulombic efficiency. Compared to the reversible capacity at the 20th cycle, the rGO/SnO2@CF retained 93.6% reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 50 mA g−1, corresponding to a capacity fading of only 0.08% per cycle. The Weibull scale parameter and shape parameter of rGO/SnO2@CF were up to 4.63 GPa and 7.87, respectively. Our measurements revealed that the positive influence of rGO effectively countervailed the negative influence of the hydrothermal process on the tensile strength; the interleaved structure of rGO/SnO2 prevented the dispersion degree of tensile strength from decreasing; the synergistic effect of rGO and SnO2 enhanced the properties of the carbon fibers, including the tensile strength and the electrochemical properties; the formed rGO network structure and bicontinuous electronic transport pathway are in favor of the cycling stability.

A water-soluble PAAs sizing agent for enhancing interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composites (CF/PPS)

Ruyi Fan,Tianwen Yan,Jiayu Su,Hui Zhao,Liusheng Zha,Jianfeng Zhou,Shu Zhu

Due to low activity and poor wettability of carbon fiber (CF), the interaction between CF and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) matrix is weak, which decreases the mechanical properties of CF reinforced PPS (CF/PPS) composites. In this article, the interfacial adhesion of CF/PPS composites was strengthened by using a water-soluble poly (amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAs) as sizing agent. This PAAs-based sizing agent had good compatibility with PPS and formed hydrogen bonds with CF activated by Meldrum’s acid. Significantly, the PAAs sizing agent can be soluble in water (up to 20 wt % high solid content) without organic solvents and surfactants, which shows huge potential in industrial applications. Experimental results demonstrated that the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strengths, and moduli of modified CF/PPS composites increased by 19.5%, 24.9%, and 10.1%, respectively. According to the SEM images on fractured surfaces of composites, fiber and PPS resin were tightly packed, and the failure mechanism was interface deformation or resin breakage.

Damage mechanism analysis to the carbon fiber and fiber-ceramic interface tailoring of Cf/ZrC-SiC using PyC coating

Ping Hu,Yuan Cheng,Maosong Xie,Yu Yang,Chang Liu,Qiang Qu,Xinghong Zhang,Shanyi Du

The damage mechanism of carbon fiber and fiber-ceramic interface of C f /ZrC-SiC were investigated and revealed. The chemical reactions of C with ZrO 2 and SiO 2 impurities during the sintering resulted in the surface and grain etching of fiber. The ZrC-SiC ceramics diffused into interface to form a strong bonding under high temperature and press, leading to a failure of stress release and guiding the crack propagation direct across fiber. Both consequently impeded the fiber pull-out and bridging. By obvious contrast, the chemical etching of fiber was effectively inhibited utilizing PyC coating as transition layer, and the strong bonding of fiber with ceramic was relieved at the same time replaced by a relatively weak bonding. As a result, the fiber pull-out and fiber bridging were boosted with a longer length more than 50 µm, over 2 times of uncoated composite, accompanied with obvious crack branching and deflection, together resulting in a graceful mechanical feedback with 2.5 times of work of fracture and improved fracture toughness . This work not only revealed the microstructure forms and inherent mechanism on structure damage of carbon fiber, but also offered an effective method of protecting fiber and tailoring the interface bonding, thereby guiding the design of C f /ZrC-SiC with graceful mechanical performance.

Electro-Fenton degradation of ciprofloxacin with highly ordered mesoporous MnCo2O4-CF cathode: Enhanced redox capacity and accelerated electron transfer

Xueyue Mi,Yi Li,Xingming Ning,Jinhu Jia,Haitao Wang,Yuguo Xia,Yan Sun,Sihui Zhan

The emergence of antibiotics in the environment, especially in drinking water, poses potential harm to human health. It’s urgent to develop effective methods to remove antibiotics in drinking water. In this work, a series of mesoporous Mn x Co 3−x O 4 nanoparticles with high surface area were successfully synthesized and firstly used as effective stable electro-Fenton catalysts to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP). The removal of CIP achieved to 100% within 5 h. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies verified the existence of redox pairs of Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ . Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) results suggested that the redox reaction capacity of MnCo 2 O 4 was enhanced and the electron transfer rate on the surface of this bimetallic oxide was 2.67 and 1.6 times the number of MnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 , respectively. The effective degradation of CIP was mainly associated with the increased electron transfer rate and advanced redox reactivity owing to the synergistic effect of manganese and cobalt entrapped in the matrix of mesoporous structure which provided more accessible active sites. The degradation intermediates and possible process mechanism were investigated in detail. The reusability of MnCo 2 O 4 -CF cathode was evaluated five cycles with minimal ion leaching which the concentration of Mn and Co in the system was lower than 2.5 and 3.4 ppm, respectively. This work provides further understanding for removal process of organic pollutants by investigation of redox couple and electron transfer rate of the promising MnCo 2 O 4 -CF cathode.

Modification of carbon fibers surfaces with polyetheramines: The role of interphase microstructure on adhesion properties of CF/epoxy composites

Lichun Ma,Guangshun Wu,Min Zhao,Xiaoru Li,Ping Han,Guojun Song

Interface construct plays a vital role in developing superior mechanical performance of carbon fibers (CFs)/resin composites. Herein, a facile approach for incorporation of polyetheramine (PEA) onto CFs surface by covalent bond (CF-g-PEA) was proposed, and compared to the adsorption one via Van der Waals' force (CF-c-PEA). FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic contact angle analysis, single fiber tensile testing, and interfacial shear strength were carried out to characterize the CF reinforcements and composites. Experimental results showed that both of coating and grafting PEA on CFs increased the polarity, wettability, roughness of CF surface, and interfacial shear strength, especially CF-g-PEA, which indicated covalent bond interaction can combine more PEA on CF surface than that of Van der Waals. While single fiber tensile strength of CF-c-PEA increased due to the structure of CF without destruction. Meanwhile, the reinforcing mechanisms and interfacial failure modes of composites were also explored. The results suggest that the interphases between the CFs and resin matrix can be adjusted by varying the bonding natures between CF and grafted modifiers, thereby offering a new route for appropriate designing and development of CF-based composite materials. Ru Single Atoms on One-Dimensional CF@g-C3N4 Hierarchy as Highly Stable Catalysts for Aqueous Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation

Ying Yang,Suoying Zhang,Lin Gu,Shijie Hao

Herein, we report a stable catalyst with Ru single atoms anchored on a one-dimensional carbon fiber@graphitic carbon nitride hierarchy, by assembling wet wipes composed of fiber-derived carbon fiber (CF), melamine-derived graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and RuCl3 before NaBH4 reduction. The atomically dispersed Ru species (3.0 wt%) are tightly attached via N-coordination provided by exterior g-C3N4 nanosheets, and further stabilized by the interior mesoporous CF. The obtained CF@g-C3N4–Ru SAs catalyst can be cycled six times without notable leaching of Ru or loss of GVL yield in the acidic media. This catalyst is more stable than Ru nanoparticles supported on CF@g-C3N4, as well as Ru single atoms anchored on CF and g-C3N4, and proves to be one of the most efficient metal catalysts for aqueous LA hydrogenation to γ-valerolactone (GVL). The isolated Ru atoms by strong N-coordination, and their enhanced electron/mass transfer afforded by the one-dimensional hierarchy, can be responsible for the excellent durability of CF@g-C3N4–Ru SAs under harsh reaction conditions. Keywords:Ru single atom;one-dimensional hierarchy;levulinic acid;γ-valerolactone;stability

Highly conductive and mechanically robust MXene@CF core-shell composites for in-situ damage sensing and electromagnetic interference shielding

Yi Hu,Junzhen Chen,Guoyu Yang,Yujun Li,Ming Dong,Han Zhang,Emiliano Bilotti,Jianjun Jiang,Dimitrios G. Papageorgiou

In this work, a new type of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite was fabricated by introducing MXene nanoparticles onto the surface of carbon fibers (CF) via electrophoretic deposition (EPD) followed by thermal annealing. The MXene-reinforced CF/epoxy composites displayed enhanced mechanical properties and electrical conductivity as well as in-situ damage sensing capability. The uniformly deposited MXene nanoparticles contributed to a considerable enhancement of the flexural strength of CFRPs through hydrogen bonding and mechanical interlocking. The thermal annealing treatment reduced the amount of oxygen groups on the surface of MXene nanoparticles and enabled a 66 % increase of the out-of-plane electrical conductivity and a 20 % improvement of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness. The exceptional EMI performance of the core-shell hierarchical microstructure can be ascribed to the polarization of the inhomogeneous interfaces, the dipole polarization, and the conductive loss effect as a result of the presence of annealed MXenes on the surface of CFs.

Construction of polydopamine and carbon nanotube on carbon fiber surfaces to improve the mechanical properties of CF/PLA composite

Hongmei Zuo,Lihua Zou,Wu Jing,Hongjie Wang,He Wang,Xu Wang,Hao Yin,Fangtao Ruan,Zhenzhen Xu,Diansen Li

Polydopamine (PDA) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were successively incorporated onto carbon fiber (CF) to enhance surface activity. The impact of PDA and CNT on wettability and mechanical properties of the resulting composites were revealed. Fiber reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composites were prepared. The results indicated an improved wettability for PDA-CNT modified fibers. Simultaneously, the tensile and bending curves showed brittle and plastic fracture, respectively. Mechanical properties of CF-PDA-CNT/PLA composite significantly outperformed those of CF/PLA composite. The bridging effect of PDA on the CF surface allowed for a tight bond with the matrix PLA , and provided effective load transfer between the matrix and fibers. The application of PDA and CNT on surface modification provides a novel approach for the study of fiber modification.
