Surface bonding of CoP to biomass derived carbon microtube: Site-specific growth and high-efficiency catalysis

Xiaoyun Zhang,Lili Song,Le Tong,Mengyuan Zeng,Yuqiao Wang

The imitation and exploration of natural structures and characteristics are the inspiration source for science and technology progress. Herein, we report a method for preparing CoP anchored carbon microtubes (CoP@BCMT) by continuous hydrothermal, carbonization and phosphorization processes using cattail fibers (CFs) as carbon sources. The surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups acted as the growth sites for CoP fixed and grew in special positions. Co was anchored to BCMT surface through –OH groups and C-O-Co bonds were formed between CoP and BCMT. Surface bonding can ensure the growth of CoP at specific sites. The ultra-thin carbon layer covered CoP was deposited by the deposition of suspended carbon during CFs carbonization. CoP size, dispersibility and adhesion were maintained well due to surface coating and bonding. C-O-Co bonds promoted electron transfer and optimized adsorption energy of hydrogen, which was evaluated by density functional theory calculations. CoP@BCMT exhibited a low overpotential of 49 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability for 72 h. We modified commercial carbon nanotubes with surface hydroxyl groups and then combined with CoP, which greatly improved the catalytic performance. This work provides us with ideas for learning and using biomass to prepare advanced catalysts.

CoMoO4-CoP/NC heterostructure anchored on hollow polyhedral N-doped carbon skeleton for efficient water splitting

Jiabing Luo,Yan Zhou,Xingzhao Wang,Yufeng Gu,Wanli Liu,Shutao Wang,Jun Zhang

We report the synthesis and electrocatalytic properties of a CoMoO 4 -CoP heterostructure anchored on a hollow polyhedral N -doped carbon skeleton (CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC) for water-splitting applications. The preparation involved the anion exchange of MoO 4 2- to the organic ligand of ZIF-67, the self-hydrolysis of MoO 4 2- , and NaH 2 PO 2 phosphating annealing. CoMoO 4 was found to enhance thermal stability and prevent active site agglomeration during annealing, while the hollow structure of CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC provided a large specific surface area and high porosity that facilitated mass transport and charge transfer. The interfacial electron transfer from Co to Mo and P sites promoted the generation of electron-deficient Co sites and electron-enriched P sites, which accelerated water dissociation. CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH solution, with overpotentials of 122 mV and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. The CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC‖CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC two-electrode system only required an overall water splitting (OWS) cell voltage of 1.62 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline electrolytic cell. In addition, the material showed comparable activity to 20% Pt/C‖RuO 2 in a pure water home-made membrane electrode device, demonstrating potential for practical applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Our results suggest that CoMoO 4 -CoP/NC is a promising electrocatalyst for efficient and cost-effective water splitting.

Yanxia Zeng,Xiashi Zhu,Yuheng Zhang,Songqing Chen,Wei Zhang,Lei Wang

Electrochemical water electrolysis is an efficient important way to produce hydrogen. In this work, durable and low-cost Co 2 P/CoP was synthesized by a facile one-step calcination reaction. Subsequently, Co 2 P/CoP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microcopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). To evaluate the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, Co 2 P/CoP was measured by electrochemical tests. Co 2 P/CoP exhibited excellent HER performance with a small overpotential of 196 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a smaller Tafel slope of 53 mV dec −1 in alkaline media. Moreover, Co 2 P/CoP exhibited superior stability with long-term operation of 24 h.

Ultrathin 2D flower-like CoP@C with the active (211) facet for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting

Xiaowei Shi,Ping Yang,Yongyong Cao,Chao Dai,Weiqing Ye,Lingxia Zheng,Zhefei Zhao,Jianguo Wang,Huajun Zheng

Designing non-noble-metal electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability towards hydrogen evolution reaction is vitally necessary for the demands of renewable and clean energy sources. Herein, an advanced water reduction electrocatalyst with a two-dimensional (2D) morphology based on CoP embedded on the surface of nanocarbon (CoP@C) is fabricated, which is derived from 2D Co-MOF by low-temperature phosphorization. Benefiting from the unique 2D morphology as well as more exposed (211) facet, such electrocatalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity in both alkaline and acid media in comparison to the traditional three-dimensional (3D) structure CoP@C with the overpotentials of 127 and 236 mV for HER at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Density functional theory simulations unveil that the binding energies of the adsorbed intermediate species become more appropriate on the (211) facet compared with that on the (011) facet. This could improve the dissociation of H2O and desorption of H*, and thus facilitate the electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, the 2D electrocatalyst demonstrates enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction performance compared with its 3D counterparts. When the 2D CoP@C is employed as both the anode and cathode, a potential of 1.67 V is required to achieve the 10 mA cm−2 current density. In addition, it still exhibits good durability and even continued to work for 50 h.

CoP-anchored high N-doped carbon@graphene sheet as bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Guilin Li,Lei Li,Zhan Lin

Electrocatalytic water splitting, as an ideal technology in renewable energy applications , suffers from high electrical energy consumption due to the slow kinetics of HER and OER reactions. Therefore, it is urgent to design efficient bifunctional catalysts to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, a self-supported electrode, anchoring CoP nanoparticles on N-doped carbon/graphene (NC-G) and chemically growing on Ni foam as a whole electrode (denoted as NC-G-CoP/NF) displays promising electrocatalytic performance in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, with a low overpotentials of 68 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 255 mV at 50 mA cm −2 for OER. This bifunctional electrocatalyst only needs 1.435 V to generate 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the following factors: i) inherent nature of transition metal phosphides, ii) abundant and high dispersion N active sites in NC-G, iii) strong interaction between the NC-G and CoP nanoparticles, and iv) rapid electron transfer between the catalytic centers and Nickle foam. This provides a new perspective to design efficient electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Au nanoparticle plasmon-enhanced electrochemiluminescence aptasensor based on the 1D/2D PTCA/CoP for diclofenac assay

Li Jingxian,Shan Xueling,Jiang Ding,Wang Wenchang,Xu Fangmin,Chen Zhidong

The combination of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) can be an effective way to amplify the signal intensity. In this work, an ECL aptasensor with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid–decorated cobalt phosphate (denoted as PTCA/CoP) as the ECL emitter and Au nanoparticles (NPs) as plasma was proposed for diclofenac assay. The prepared PTCA/CoP with special 1D/2D structure exhibited good ability and excellent ECL performance. The diclofenac aptamer acted as a bridge to link the PTCA/CoP and Au NPs; thus, the ECL performance of PTCA/CoP was greatly improved due to the plasma effect of Au NPs. Besides, it was found that the ECL signal of the aptasensor was obviously quenched by the introduction of diclofenac, which might be due to the transformation from the LSPR process to the resonance energy transform (RET) process. Under optimal conditions, the difference of ECL intensity was negatively correlated with the concentration of diclofenac in the range 0.1 pM to 10 μM with a low detection limit of 0.072 pM at the potential of −1.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl ( S / N  = 3). The aptasensor was proved to be suitable for the detection of diclofenac in real samples, suggesting its great practicability. Graphical abstract

High performance lithium-sulfur batteries based on CoP nanoparticle-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedra

Yuqing Zhu,Hao Zheng,Jianmei Cen,Asad Ali,Xingfa Chen,Pei Kang Shen

Lithium‑sulfur (Li-S) battery with high theoretical energy density is regard as one of the most appealing competitors for the promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, the severe polysulfide shuttling and the low electrical conductivity of sulfur cathode limit the practical application of Li-S batteries. Therefore, the designing of sulfur host materials with high electrochemical activity and high sulfur content have great significance for Li-S batteries. Here, we reported a novel hybrid nanostructure (a new sulfide matrix material) through the pyrolytic reduction phosphorization strategy form ZIF-67, in which CoP nanoparticles were embedded into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes hollow polyhedron (NCNHP). Due to the synergistic effect of highly active Co, CoP and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs), the Co/CoP-NCNHP hybrid improved the adsorption of polysulfides. Micropores in Co/CoP-NCNHP effectively impregnate sulfur and inhibit the diffusion of polysulfides through physical constraint. In addition, the Co/CoP-NCNHP conductive network of nitrogen doping carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) interconnection promoted electron transport and electrolyte infiltration. Therefore, the specific capacity, rate capability and cycling stability of Li-S batteries are significantly improved. In particular, we delivered the Co/CoP-NCNHP based cathode (loaded with 74.09 wt% sulfur), which could main the specific capacity of 885 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles of 0.5C current.

Constructing Highly Ordered Continuous BNNS Networks in COP Film to Achieve Excellent Thermal Conduction and Dielectric Performance

Jialong Jiang,Yi Zheng,Yuan Ji,Hong Wu,Shaoyun Guo

To meet the requirement of thermal management of modern electronic devices, polymer composites with high thermal conductivity (TC) and dielectric performance are nowadays in urgent demand. Herein, a highly ordered continuous network of boron nitride nano-sheet (BNNS) was constructed in cyclic olefin polymer (COP) films via the forced flow processing in the rubbery state (FFRS), melt-spinning, fiber-alignment, and hot-pressing procedures. The composites exhibited superior TC, low dielectric permittivity, and low dielectric loss simultaneously. The in-plane TC of the composites reached 3.92 W/(mK) when the content of BNNS was at 27 weight percentage (27 wt%), since the procedures improved the face-to-face contact between the BNNS (which was exfoliated, dispersed, and in-plane oriented during FFRS), enhancing the continuity of the BNNS thermally conductive network. Both the TC and the experimental results indicated the outstanding heat dissipation performance of the composites. Meanwhile, the dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of the 27 wt% BNNS composites were 2.56 and 0.00085 at 10 GHz, respectively, lower than that of the COP-POE matrix. Moreover, the mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites were excellent. The composites with such highly ordered continuous networks are very promising in high-performance electronic devices.

Flower-structured CoP@MoS2-x S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for enhanced hydrogen evolution and selective biomass oxidation

Jia Zhang,Jiliang Ma,Rui Cui,Weikang Ling,Min Hong,Runcang Sun

Promoting interfacial separation and charge transfer within S-scheme heterojunctions is crucial for effectively enhancing photocatalytic H 2 production. Here, we have successfully synthesized flower-shaped CoP@MoS 2 -x S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts through a straightforward thermal annealing and hydrothermal process. These photocatalysts demonstrated exceptional performance in H 2 generation assisted by biorefinery. The optimal CoP@MoS 2 -2 photocatalyst achieved an H 2 evolution rate of 4339.39 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is 8 and 5.5 folds of individual CoP and MoS 2 , respectively. Meanwhile, the system was accompanied by 81.0 % yield of lactic acid, which is higher than those of CoP and MoS 2 . The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CoP@MoS 2 -x heterojunctions stems primarily from their unique S-scheme charge carrier transport mechanism. This S-scheme heterojunction structure not only boosts the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs but also preserves a robust photocatalytic redox capacity. This study provides a new avenue for designing efficient photocatalysts of H 2 generation assisted by biomass oxidation.

Amorphous/crystalline CoP/Ni2P@FeP heterostructure nanofibers as lattice oxygen involved electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Qing Ye,Xuanhao Hu,Yupei Fu,Yongliang Cheng

The rational design and construction of amorphous/crystalline heterostructures with multiphasic interfaces represents an effective approach to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition metal phosphides (TMP)-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP heterostructured nanofibers electrocatalyst (CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs) via electrospinning, oxidation, in situ growth of CoNiFe-PBA nanocubes and subsequent phosphorization, in which amorphous Co and Ni co-doped FeP nanosheets are anchored on crystalline nanofibers composed of CoP and Ni 2 P. Electrochemical tests combined with theoretical calculations demonstrates that the construction of the amorphous/crystalline heterostructure with triphasic interfaces induces electronic rearrangement of CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs, which leads to the upshift of the O 2p band center of the CoNiFeOOH species formed after surface reconstruction, thereby facilitating the OER through the LOM pathway and ultimately enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity. As a result, the CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs exhibits low overpotentials of 256, 297 and 311 mV to achieve high current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, the electrolytic cell assembled with CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs and Pt/C only requires voltages of 1.508, 1.607 and 1.690 V to deliver current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, and exhibits outstanding long-term stability at 200 mA cm −2 for 200 h.

Upcycling waste phosphate into CoP/FeCo2O4 heterostructured electrodes: a closed-loop strategy via in-situ phosphorus speciation

Xianyong Hong,Jinghua Li,Yubo Pan,Mingxing Shi,Mingzhu Xia,Fengyun Wang

The redox asymmetry conversion mechanism of adsorbed phosphate during thermal reconstruction remains elusive, limiting the exploitation of spent adsorbents' untapped potential. Here, we report a counterintuitive phenomenon: upon annealing phosphate-saturated CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) in a reducing atmosphere, the phosphate does not decompose completely but selectively co-generates conductive cobalt phosphide (CoP) and active P O species, forming a self-supported CoP/FeCo 2 O 4 heterostructured electrode. Specifically, the metallic CoP facilitates rapid electron transport, while the P O species synergistically enhance redox kinetics and interfacial compatibility. The pivotal finding is that this in-situ phosphorus speciation challenges the homogeneity assumption inherent to conventional doping paradigms. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (P 2p bimodal coexistence) and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the “partial reduction–partial retention” behavior of phosphate arises from synergistic regulation by interlayer confinement effects and metal-phosphate coordination structures within the LDH precursor. Benefiting from this unique configuration, the electrode achieves an exceptional areal capacitance of 3.71 F/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 in 3 M KOH, with 69.74% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the built-in electric field at the CoP/FeCo 2 O 4 interface facilitates charge redistribution, reducing the interfacial charge-transfer resistance to 0.48 Ω·cm 2 . This study establishes “phosphorus speciation” as a new principle for concurrently optimizing electronic conductivity and redox activity, offering a paradigm for the function-oriented repurposing of phosphate-laden remediation materials into high-performance energy storage electrodes.

Highly efficient and durable total water splitting using CoP/Co2P-C bifunctional electrodes with tunable phase interfaces

Yubin He,Shuting Zhang,Xiu Yu,Jiamiao Lu,Hairen Tang,Shiyang Qin,Xudong Xiao,Kun Lang,Yanhong Zhang,Baojiang Jiang

Bifunctional seawater electrolysis is limited by the activity–durability trade-off in chloride-containing media. Here, in-situ-grown Co-BTC MOF arrays on nickel foam were converted into self-supporting CoP/Co 2 P-C/NF electrodes, enabling controlled evolution Co 2 P-rich to CoP-rich compositions and identifying a favourable CoP/Co 2 P coexistence range. The continuous conductive carbon framework shortens charge-transport paths, maintains electrolyte–electrode contact, and supports rapid interfacial kinetics. Theoretical calculations indicate that the CoP/Co 2 P biphasic interface modulates intermediate adsorption, weakening Cl adsorption while favouring water-splitting-related intermediates, consistent with suppressed chlorine-related competition. At 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, the optimized electrode requires 31 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 180 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and drives overall water splitting at 1.47 V with stable operation over 100 h at 1.56 V. In 1.0 M KOH + seawater, it maintains low voltage and outperforms Pt/C||RuO 2 , providing a reproducible phase-ratio regulation strategy for non-precious bifunctional seawater electrolysis electrodes.
