Motivated by the double exchange interaction between the adjacent magnetic ions in the magnetic oxides would lead to the generation of more oxygen vacancy to improve the CO 2 capture of CaO, here we report a double-exchange-induced effective increase of CO 2 performance of calcium-based adsorbent by incorporating bimetallic oxides with variable valence state (i.e. Fe, Mn, Ce, Cu) into CaO. The (Fe-Mn)-doped CaO sample exhibits excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity and carbonation conversion, remaining stable at 0.61 g CO 2 /g adsorbent and 95% after 20 cycles, respectively. The enhanced performance are attributed to uniform distribution of Fe 2 O 3 and Ca 2 MnO 4 particles preventing CaO crystallite growth and agglomeration. The (Fe-Mn)-doped sample with much thinner flake structure and the largest pore diameter is loose and porous, thus favoring CO 2 diffusion inside the particles and preventing sintering during carbonation period. The electron transfer between Fe and Mn carried out by the famous double exchange may boost the generation of oxygen vacancy and the effective improvement of the CO 2 affinity for the calcium-based adsorbent, which are significant to the diffusion of CO 3 2– and mobility of O 2– according to the mechanism of CO 2 adsorption. In addition, the (Fe-Mn)-doped adsorbent exhibits the fastest adsorption kinetics, and the synergistic interaction of Fe and Mn can significantly reduce the activation energy of carbonation reaction. The famous double-exchange interaction of magnetic metal oxide can occur by intermediate oxygen p orbits between adjacent Fe and Mn metal ions with different d orbital occupancies in the (Fe-Mn)-modified calcium-based adsorbent, which provides a unique way to design CO 2 adsorbent.

Calcium looping, a carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture technique, may provide an effective route to eliminate climate change brought by the steadily rising anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. However, the key challenge for calcium looping is the sintering-induced decay over the numerous cycles for CaO-based sorbents. Herein, multi-promoters modified CaO-based sorbents, derived from the mixed waste slag of marble waste powder (MWP) and rare earth polishing powder wet slag (REPP), are prepared by a simultaneous hydrating and calcining process. The cyclic CO 2 capture is explored by a thermogravimetric analyzer, and the promotion mechanism is investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption, and reaction kinetics fitting. Results indicate that the multicomponent promoters from the REPP, including CeO 2 , Ca 12 Al 14 O 33, and LaPO 4 , enhance the carbonation cyclic activity of CaO from MWP. The best-performing MWP-REPP sorbent with 15 wt% REPP shows less than a 10 % drop decay and the CO 2 carbonation conversion remains at 75 % (0.46 g CO 2 /g sorbent) after 50 repeated cycles. The excellent cyclic capture performance is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the promoters and CaO, where the CeO 2 promoter owns abundant oxygen vacancies, and the Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 and LaPO 4 promoters provide the blocked effect, thus facilitating the CO 2 sorption and inhibiting the CaO from sintering. This work presents useful guidance for improving the cyclic sorption stability of CO 2 from waste slags.

The artificial aggregates prepared with high crystalline wet quarry sludge (WQS) by cold-bonded process suffer from low mechanical strength and poor solidification effect. Inspired by the shell, polymer chains were incorporated to enhance the connection among WQS particles. However, traditional polymer modification faces many limitations such as high cost and hydration inhibition. In this work, calcium oxide (CaO) and polyacrylamide (PAM) were co-used to address the above limitations and improve the properties of artificial aggregates. The compressive strength, hydration products and microstructure of modified WQS-aggregates were monitored. The main findings prove that the co-use of CaO and PAM effectively improves the mechanical performance of WQS-aggregates. The compressive strength of aggregates modified by CaO and PAM reach 11.85 MPa, exceeding the control by approximately 46.3 %. This approach mitigates issues like crack generation and poor cement hydration, which will occur when they are added separately. Through metal coordination and promoted carbonation behaviors, the introduction of CaO and PAM promotes the formation of a 3D organic-inorganic network and induces a denser microstructure. The porosities of aggregates reduce from 27.48 % to 24.83 %. The incorporation of CaO and PAM enhances the solidification of heavy metals. The prepared WQS-aggregates meet the requirements of environmental security. It is believed that this work will provide a new solution for the preparation of low carbon artificial construction products with low activity solid wastes.

MgO-CaO ceramic cores are considered promising for precision superalloy casting due to their high melting points, chemical compatibility with molten alloys, and water-assisted removability. However, the difficult sintering and limited mechanical properties hinder their further engineering application. In this work, Y 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 composite precursors were synthesized via a low-temperature solid-state route and employed as reactive additives to regulate the densification behavior and grain-boundary chemistry of MgO-CaO ceramics. The effects of Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratio, additive state (direct precursor vs. post-calcined powder), and addition level on the phase evolution, microstructure, densification, flexural strength, and refractoriness were systematically investigated. The results suggested a precursor-directed reactive sintering mechanism with two coupled contributions: At low Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratios, a transient Ca-Al-O-rich liquid associated with Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 promoted mass transport and pore elimination, while at higher ratios, the in-situ precipitation of lamellar CaYAlO 4 at grain boundaries contributed to reconstruct the intergranular network, strengthened interphase bonding, and suppressed grain coarsening via a pinning effect. Due to the balanced densification and grain-boundary stabilization, the optimal sample containing 1.5 mol.% uncalcined precursor with a high Y 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ratio achieved a room-temperature flexural strength of 126.16 MPa and refractoriness of 1698 °C after sintering at 1600 °C for 3 h. As a result, post-calcined additives led to coarser and less interconnected intergranular structures with inferior densification. This work demonstrates that tailoring precursor chemistry provides an effective route to switch and coordinate liquid-assisted densification and CaYAlO 4 -dominated grain-boundary reinforcement, offering a viable strategy for designing high-performance MgO-CaO ceramics potentially used for advanced superalloy casting cores.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a persistent chlorinated organic pollutant with high toxicity, strong environmental stability, and resistance to biodegradation. Although persulfate-based oxidation is promising for PCP remediation, its performance in contaminated soil is often limited by complex soil matrices and unclear activation mechanisms. In this study, CaO-activated persulfate was applied to PCP degradation in actual contaminated soil, with emphasis on synergistic alkaline–thermal activation and calcium-associated PCP transformation. CaO significantly enhanced PCP degradation, achieving 86.0% removal after 7 d, whereas persulfate alone showed limited oxidation capability. Mechanistic analysis showed that CaO promoted PCP degradation through Ca(OH) 2 -induced alkaline activation, hydration-induced transient thermal activation, and Ca 2 + -mediated formation of calcium-associated pentachlorophenolate species (PCP-Ca). PCP-Ca formation reduced the apparent degradation activation energy from 112.8 to 92.3 kJ mol −1 and increased the apparent pseudo-first-order rate constant by 62.7% at 30 °C, indicating enhanced oxidative susceptibility. SO 4 • - and •OH were identified as the main reactive species. LC-MS analysis suggested that PCP degradation proceeded through hydroxylation, dechlorination, and ring-cleavage pathways, generating intermediates with lower predicted toxicity. This study reveals the multifunctional role of CaO in persulfate activation and provides mechanistic insight into PCP degradation in contaminated soil.

Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is essential for high-temperature energy storage in 3rd-generation concentrating solar power plants. CaO-based materials are promising candidates for such systems due to their high theoretical energy storage density, good high-temperature resistance and low raw material prices. However, CaO-based materials are prone to high-temperature sintering and have poor solar absorptance, restricting their capability to harvest solar heat directly. Herein, hydrophobic layer-assisted casting approach was employed for preparing CaO-based pellets wrapped by a light-absorbing shell. The synergistic optimization of outer shell light-absorbing components and internal Al-based stabilizers contributes to improved optical absorption, cyclic heat storage capacity and mechanical durability of the pellets. The MnFe 2 O 4 /graphite hydrophobic layer outperforms Fe 3 O 4 /graphite and MnO 2 /graphite counterparts in improving the optical absorptance and shell structural strength of CaO-based TCES pellets. A MnFe 2 O 4 /graphite volume ratio of 1:2 yields an average shell optical absorptance of 85.3% and a 2.6% shedding rate after 20 min of testing. Furthermore, the Al-based inert stabilizers effectively enhance the mechanical strength (4.28 MPa) of the modified pellets. After 29 cycles, the pellets achieve an energy storage density of ∼1.13 MJ/kg, representing a 4.4% improvement over the first cycle. This improvement derives from the uniformly distributed inert framework, which inhibits CaO grain sintering/agglomeration, retains porosity, and ensures sufficient gas-solid interfaces and mass transfer pathways.

This study systematically investigates the removal performance of cesium iodide (CsI) using modified kaolin-based adsorbents under various operating conditions. The adsorbents were prepared through a combined modification strategy involving thermal activation, CaO addition, and subsequent acid leaching. The effects of gas flow rate, adsorption temperature, and atmosphere on CsI capture were systematically evaluated. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbents were characterized using multiple techniques. The results demonstrate that the combined modification strategy significantly enhances both the CsI capture capacity and the chemical stability of the adsorbents. For instance, the adsorption capacity of Kaolin-CaO-C-H reaches approximately 160 mg/g under optimal conditions. These findings indicate that the modification process effectively tailors the pore structure and active sites of the adsorbent, thereby improving its efficiency in capturing volatile cesium during high-temperature volatilization processes.

Silver is a crucial rare and valuable metal in industrial applications, primarily found in polymetallic sulfide deposits as sulfides. The adsorption compatibility between various types of associated silver ores and collectors has not been extensively studied. This research focuses on acanthite (Ag 2 S), the predominant mineral in such ores. The study systematically investigates the adsorption compatibility differences between dithiophosphate collectors with five distinct substituents and associated silver ores. This investigation combines computational chemistry simulations with experimental validations. The findings reveal that the −N 2 PS 2 − -type collector exhibits superior surface matching with acanthite (100) surface compared to the −O 2 PS 2 − -type collector. Moreover, the presence of −C−O−C− bonds and benzene rings enhances the effectiveness of dithiophosphate-type collectors for acanthite. In contrast, the compatibility of the −C 2 PS 2 − -type 3418A collector, lacking characteristic groups, is relatively poor. In high-alkali processes, the adsorption of Ca(OH) + hinders the reactivity of silver atoms with the collector. The presence of benzene rings and −NH− groups in the substituents intensifies the impact of Ca(OH) + on the collector, thereby diminishing its adsorption strength. The introduction of −C−O−C− does not modify the sensitivity of the −O 2 PS 2 − -type collector to Ca(OH) + . Furthermore, the adsorption of alkane −C 2 PS 2 − -type collectors on mineral surfaces remains unaffected by the attenuating effect of Ca(OH) + . The results of the flotation tests, Zeta potential, and adsorption capacity assessments further validated the conclusions derived from computational chemistry analyses. The results provide valuable insights for the future design and advancement of innovative collectors customized for silver ore applications.

To enhance the mechanical strength and high-temperature dimensional stability of CaO–SiO 2 ceramic fiber boards, composite ceramic fiber boards were fabricated via vacuum filtration with quartz particles of varying content and particle sizes. Results show that moderate quartz addition reinforces the interwoven fiber skeleton, increases bulk density, and significantly improves compressive strength—from 1.41 MPa (without quartz) to 3.53 MPa at 60 wt% quartz. Finer particles (d 50 = 5.8 μm) further enhance strength, reaching 5.68 MPa, due to better pore filling and higher packing density. Quartz also improves thermal stability through high-temperature expansion, effectively mitigating shrinkage. A mathematical model based on composite linear shrinkage was established to predict dimensional changes between 1000–1400 ℃, with good agreement between calculated and experimental values. This study reveals the reinforcement mechanism of quartz in CaO–SiO 2 ceramic fiber composites, offering theoretical and practical guidance for the design of high-performance thermal insulation materials.

Calcium-loop (CaL) heat storage technology is a potential backup energy option for concentrated solar power plants. During repeated cycles, calcium-based materials face sintering and agglomeration, leading to a rapid decline in heat storage capacity. The most widely studied closed CO 2 Brayton cycle requires calcium-based materials to undergo repeated cycles in a carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere, but such work has been limited in the past. In this study, we synthesized various millimeter-sized calcium-based heat carrier pellets using a novel forming method and evaluated their heat storage performance. Using a simultaneous thermal analyzer (TGA/DSC), we evaluated the materials' heat storage performance and investigated the effects of different particle-size alumina on the pore structure of calcium-based pellets through X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, N 2 physical adsorption, and reaction kinetics. The study found that calcium-based pellets with large-particle-size alumina formed a web-like pore structure during cycling, exhibiting better structural stability. In contrast, those with small-particle-size better maintained their initial pore structure. Alumina-added calcium-based pellets had more abundant pores, with the large-particle-size alumina group having a specific surface area 3.5 times that of pure calcium oxide pellets. Additionally, the accumulative heat storage density of calcium-based pellets with small-particle-size alumina after 20 cycles was about 1.72 times that of pure calcium oxide pellets. It was worth noting that we found that shortening the carbonation time within the scope of this research could slow down the degradation of the exothermic performance of calcium based pellets.

The capture and catalytic performance in integrated CO 2 and utilization (ICCU) potentially contributes to reduce CO 2 emissions with low cost and high efficiency. Breaking through the limitations of conventional dual-functional materials (DFMs). Herein, Fe-CaO/NF self-assembled with nickel foam (NF) as template is designed and prepared via hydrothermal method. CaO is anchored on the Ni-foam skeleton, and Fe-Ni bimetallic sites within the CaO matrix establishes dual-active centers synergizing CO 2 chemisorption and activation. The stability and activity stability of CO 2 capture and in-situ conversion were improved, CO 2 capture capacity is 12.8 mmol/g, CO yield is 9.33 mmol/g, ∼80 % CO 2 conversion is achieved, and 100 % CO selectivity is obtained. It shows good cycle stability and high activity in 12 cycles. The synergistic effect of Fe and Ni on CO 2 adsorption and conversion was confirm by DRIFTS. The interaction between CaO and Fe is weakened by Ni, while the interaction with Fe promotes the conversion of CO 2 . In comparison, the stability and activity of the without O 2 -containing cycle are higher than those of the O 2 -containing. O 2 has a negative effect, leading to competitive adsorption between CO 2 and H 2 O in the CO 2 capture process. The H 2 O molecular layer is formed on the surface of the rod-like structure, and the reduction of the active phase is interference, resulting the regeneration of CaO was decline.

Porosity is a characteristic feature of atmospheric plasma–sprayed (APS) coatings that strongly influences their physical and functional properties. However, studies on its effect on the electromagnetic (EM) performance and high-temperature stability of microwave-absorbing coatings (MACs) remain limited. In this work, FeSiAl/CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 composite coatings with different porosities were fabricated by adjusting powder feed rate (PFR). Microstructural evolution, EM properties, and isothermal oxidation behavior of prepared composite coatings were systematically investigated. Results show that increasing PFR reduces the extent to which particles are melted, leading to higher porosity due to the retention of unmelted particles. The increased porosity disrupted local conductive networks, altered the complex permittivity and permeability, and lowered the bonding strength of the coatings. Moreover, pores and cracks facilitated oxygen diffusion, accelerating oxidation and crack propagation at elevated temperatures. After high-temperature oxidation, the decrease in complex permittivity improved impedance matching and broadened the absorption bandwidth. These findings provide new insights into microstructure–property relationships of APS-deposited MACs and offer a strategy for tailoring the coating porosity to simultaneously optimize their EM absorption performance and high-temperature oxidation resistance.
