Selective catalytic reduction of NO using CO (CO-SCR) is a promising technology for the purification of NO in the flue gas. However, the presence of O 2 significantly inhibits the activity of the CO-SCR catalyst. Herein, we synthesize a hollow Mn-doped CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 catalyst (Mn-CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 ), which achieved 82% NO conversion, 100% CO conversion, and 78% N 2 selectivity under 5 vol% O 2 at 200 °C, superior to those of CeO 2 @Co 3 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 catalysts. The characterization results indicate that the strong electronic interaction at the heterointerfaces between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 plays a crucial role in promoting selective adsorption of NO. Furthermore, the Mn doping into the Co 3 O 4 lattice of the catalyst facilitates the conversion of N 2 O intermediates, thereby enhancing the overall activity. This research provides a new strategy for the design and synthesis of CO-SCR catalysts.

Cobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) holds great potential for enzymeless glucose detection due to its strong redox capabilities. However, its poor electrical conductivity limits the charge transfer and hence weakens its catalytic activity when utilized as an electrode in electrochemical sensors, such as an enzymeless glucose sensor. In this study, we developed an indium oxide (In2O3)-wrapped Co3O4 nanofibers (Co3O4@In2O3 NFs)-based electrochemical sensor for the enzymeless detection of glucose, with an ultra-low limit of detection (LoD) of 8.85 nM (S/N = 3), a wide detection range from 10 nM to 118 μM, and a high sensitivity of 1197.5 μA mM−1 cm−2. In addition, this sensor exhibits good selectivity, reproducibility, and long-term stability for over 30 days. The sensing performance of bare Co3O4 NFs towards glucose has been significantly enhanced by incorporating them within highly conductive In2O3, which is mainly attributed to the synergistic combination of the electrocatalytic activity of Co3O4 NFs, as the delicately designed core, and the excellent conductivity of In2O3, as the shell. Thus, this novel modified Co3O4@In2O3 NFs electrochemical composite has huge potential to be further developed for enzymeless glucose analysis in practical clinical settings.

The widespread antibiotic use is accompanied by antibiotic resistance. A large number of antibiotic pollutants enter the water, seriously endangering the ecological environment and human health. In this study, cobalt-based materials are used to activate persulfate to treat antibiotics in wastewater based on advanced oxidation. Co 3 O 4 is obtained at different temperatures by the one-step roasting method, eliminating the complicated preparation of traditional materials which require a large amount of reagents, generating a large amount of wastewater, and complex large-scale preparation. XRD and Raman results indicate the materials’ good crystallinity and purity. XPS and SEM indicated that the appropriate calcination temperature promoted the formation of Co 2+ , which was conducive to the activation of PMS for the oxidation of TCH. The catalytic activity of the materials is evaluated using tetracycline (TCH). Results suggest that 90.01 % of TCH is removed after 30 min using 0.8 g/L Co 3 O 4 –350 °C, 0.4 g/L persulfate (PMS), 25 °C, and initial pH. Moreover, pH, cyclic, and ion interference experiments indicate that the Co 3 O 4 –350 °C/PMS system exhibits a wide potential application range. Free radical scavenging experiments show that ·O 2 − is the main active oxygen species. Co 3 O 4 –350 °C as a PMS activator is a catalytic material with large-scale practical applications.

Because of their superior power and energy densities, supercapacitors have garnered considerable amounts of attention in energy storage technologies. Co3O4 is considered as a regularly used electrode material for supercapacitors because of its high theoretical capacitance and outstanding electrochemical activity. However, owing to the Co3O4 electrode materials’ rapid capacity decay and low intrinsic conductivity, it is challenging to achieve high theoretical capacitance. As a result, doping Co3O4 with metal components can enhance its electrical and surface characteristics while also raising its conductivity. Through a straightforward hydrothermal reaction and subsequent thermal decomposition, a series of Fe doping into Co3O4 has been successfully realized in this paper. This generates a nanosheet floral cluster structure and exposes more active sites, and the two metal elements work in concert to improve the capacitance performance. The electrochemical performance of the Co-0.2Fe-450 electrode material appears satisfactory when the doping amount of Fe is 0.2 mmol and its thermal decomposition temperature is 450 °C. The specific capacitance at 1 A g−1 is 680 F g−1. The capacitance retention rate at 10 A g−1 current density after 5000 charge–discharge cycles is 84.67%. Notably, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor retains 105.5% of its capacitance after 5000 cycles and has a power density of 803.13 W kg−1 and an energy density of 17.78 W h kg−1. Fe-doped Co3O4 has a strong future in energy storage, as evidenced by its exceptional electrochemical characteristics.

Among various H2production methods, splitting water using renewable electricity for H2production is regarded as a promising approach due to its high efficiency and zero carbon emissions. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important part of splitting water, but also the main bottleneck. The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis technology involves multi-electron/proton transfer and has sluggish reaction kinetics, which is the key obstacle to the overall efficiency of electrolyzing water. Therefore, it is necessary to develop highly efficient and cheap OER electrocatalysts to drive overall water splitting. Herein, a series of efficient RuO2-Co3O4composites were synthesized via a straightforward three-step process comprising solvothermal synthesis, ion exchange, and calcination. The results indicate that using 10 mg of RuCl3·xH2O and 15 mg of Co-MOF precursor in the second ion exchange step is the most effective way to acquire the Co3O4-RuO2-10 (RCO-10) composite with the largest specific area and the best electrocatalytic performance after the calcination process. The optimal Co3O4-RuO2-10 composite powder catalyst displays low overpotential (η10= 272 mV), a small Tafel slope (64.64 mV dec−1), and good electrochemical stability in alkaline electrolyte; the overall performance of Co3O4-RuO2-10 surpasses that of many related cobalt-based oxide catalysts. Furthermore, through integration with a carbon cloth substrate, Co3O4-RuO2-10/CC can be directly used as a self-supporting electrode with high stability. This work presents a straightforward method to design Co3O4-RuO2composite array catalysts for high-performance electrocatalytic OER performance.

Triethylamine (TEA) is a typically volatile organic compound that poses significant environmental and health risks, due to its high toxicity and volatility. Currently, the exploration of TEA sensors based on semiconductor ZnO is still suffered by their intrinsically low sensitivity, slow response/recovery times, and poor selectivity. Herein, we develop the highly-sensitive TEA sensors based on rationally-designed Co 3 O 4 /ZnO p-n heterojunctions, in which the clustered Co 3 O 4 are incorporated into porous ZnO nanosheets. As a result, at the given operating temperature of 260 °C, the as-constructed sensors exhibit an overall enhanced performance with an excellent response of 140.5 to 100 ppm TEA, swift response/recovery times of 6/60 s and high selectivity, representing their promise toward practical applications in advanced TEA sensors.

Three novel N-doped carbon supported Co/Co 3 O 4 catalysts, namely, Co@CN- hmta , Co@CN- larg and Co-Co 3 O 4 @CN- bipy , with sheet-, worm-, honeycomb-like morphologies respectively, have been fabricated by the pyrolysis of well-defined coordination polymers (CPs). Upon the as-prepared catalysts were applied for the reaction of N-alkylation of nitroarenes with ethanol, a direct two-step tandem reaction is realized, in which the Co@CN- hmta delivers 100% conversion/selectivity of N-ethylaniline/N , N-diethylaniline from the direct N-alkylation of nitroarenes with ethanol. The kinetic studies were conducted to confirm that the N-alkylation of aniline with ethanol is the rate-determining step in the two-step tandem reaction. The SEM/EDX, XRD, Raman, TEM, XPS, and CO 2 -TPD characterization results have revealed that sizes and dispersion of metallic Co, amount of structural defects and surface Lewis basicity towards three catalysts can be tuned by changing the structures of Co-based CPs designed by different organic linkers, which may also help to understand the preparation of industrial catalysts on a molecular level. The optimized Co@CN- hmta catalyst is easily recycled by using the external magnet for successive reuses without any loss in both activity and selectivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first carbon-nitrogen species supported Co/Co 3 O 4 catalysts derived from the CPs, which could effectively catalyzed the N-alkylation of nitroarenes with ethanol to produce the secondary amines and/or tertiary amines. This low-cost, recyclable and easy scale-up N-doped carbon supported catalyst may be of potential application in various heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Hierarchical Co 3 O 4 @NiMoO 4 core-shell nanowires (NWs) were synthesized utilizing a two-step hydrothermal method. The NWs show a high chemiresistive response (at a temperature of 255 °C) to xylene, with an R gas /R air ratio of 24.6 at 100 ppm xylene, while the response towards toluene, benzene, ethanol, and acetone, CO, H 2 S and NO 2 is much weaker. In contrast, pure Co 3 O 4 nanowires exhibit weak responses to all the vapors/gases and poor selectivity. The new NW sensor displays an almost linear response (1–100 ppm) to xylene and a lower detection limit of 424 ppb. The remarkable gas sensing characteristics are attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect and the formation of a heterostructure between Co 3 O 4 and NiMoO 4 .
Schematic presentation of a xylene vapor chemiresistive sensor based on Co3O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowires. The Co3O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowires-based sensor exhibits a high response (24.6) to 100 ppm xylene at 255 °C and high response/recovery speed (13–15 and 25–29 s).

Nitrate pollution poses a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Although electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NITRR) has emerged as a sustainable pathway, sluggish multielectron transfer is a key obstacle for efficient NITRR, limiting its practical application. In this paper, electron localization regulated by Co 3 O 4 confined in carbon nanotubes (Co 3 O 4 -in-CNTs) promoted the adsorption and activation of key intermediates, significantly enhancing NITRR performance. Co 3 O 4 -in-CNTs exhibited remarkable ammonia selectivity (94.0 %) and Faradaic efficiency (95.0 %) in a neutral electrolyte, achieving a high NO 3 ⁻ -N removal rate of 97.8 % at −0.5 V (vs. RHE). Multiscale structural and electronic analyses reveal that the confined structure enhanced charge transfer between the *NO 3 and Co 3 O 4 , allowing for boosted NITRR kinetics. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the high localized electron density around Co 3 O 4 -in-CNTs can facilitate orbital coupling of d-Co 3 O 4 and *NO 3 , reducing the barrier. This study recovers ammonia as high-purity NH 4 Cl, providing both a promising strategy for designing highly active NITRR catalysts and a practical way for the efficient removal of nitrogen pollutants and the conversion to valuable ammonia products.

The coupling of metal oxide nanoparticles and electrochemically active polymers has been considered as an effective way to improve the lithium storage performance of individual electrode materials. This work reports an electrospinning process followed by thermal annealing to produce composite nanofibers of cyclized-polyacrylonitrile (cPAN) containing Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (cPAN/Co 3 O 4 ). The as-prepared cPAN/Co 3 O 4 nanofiber exhibits a porous nanostructure with an average diameter of 85 nm. When used for lithium-ion battery, the cPAN/Co 3 O 4 anode delivers a reversible specific capacity as high as 997.6 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , and still maintains 396.5 mA h g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . Meanwhile, the cPAN/Co 3 O 4 anode shows good cycling stability with a retention of 81% capacity after running 50 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . The electrochemical performance of cPAN/Co 3 O 4 significantly outperforms its individual counterparts of cPAN and Co 3 O 4 .

A series of Au/Co x Fe 3- x O 4 catalysts was synthesized using the sol-deposition method by depositing 2–5 nm Au particles on Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 . Co 2 FeO 4 , with a Co/Fe molar ratio of 2:1, exhibited higher specific surface area , Co 3+ /Co 2+ ratio, and oxygen vacancy content compared to Co 3 O 4 . As a result, it displayed better performance in CO oxidation , achieving a total conversion temperature ( T 100 ) of 96 °C. Au greatly improved the catalytic efficiency of all Co x Fe 3- x O 4 samples, with the 0.2%Au/Co 2 FeO 4 catalyst achieving a further decrease in T 100 to 73 °C. Stability tests conducted at room temperature on the 1%Au/Co x Fe 3- x O 4 catalysts demonstrated a slowed deactivation rate after Fe-doping. The reaction pathway for CO oxidation catalyzed by Au/Co 2 FeO 4 followed the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism.

A novel hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanostructure was designed. Here, zeolite imidazolate framework-67 cubes were used as sacrificial template and carbonized under H 2 /Ar atmosphere along with in-situ growth of CNTs to form Co nanostructures@CNTs. Then the Co nanostructures@CNTs was treated by thermal-oxidation under air to further construct hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 @CNTs. The obtained hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 @CNTs was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques . It was found that the hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 @CNTs cubes were wrapped by lots of CNTs. As it was used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), after cycling 200 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 , the reversible capacity was still kept at 806.7 mA h g −1 . Excellent cycle stability and Li + storage capacity originated from the hollow nanostructures and the encapsulation of CNTs around hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 cubes to buffer the volume change of Co 3 O 4 and improve the electrical conductivity . Meanwhile, the increased specific surface area could effectively improve the storage of Li + . Therefore, the hollow Co-Co 3 O 4 @CNTs might have potential application in LIBs.
