Enhanced oxygen reduction reaction activity of Ca doping CoFe2O4 as cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells

Fangjie Liu,Zhengqi Su,Haizhao Li,Qingjie Wang,Xin Wang,Weiwei Shang,Bin Xu

CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) was identified as one of the potential cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, optimization was required due to limitations of electrochemical performance. Here effects of Ca doping on CFO were investigated for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) properties. Co 1-x Ca x Fe 2 O 4 (CCxFO, x = 0, 0.2 (CC2FO), 0.4 (CC4FO)) were synthesized with sol-gel method. Oxygen vacancy concentration was increased by Ca doping enhancing the electrochemical performance of CFO. At 750 °C, the polarization resistance (R p ) of CC4FO was 1.04 Ω·cm 2 , which was 1.09 Ω·cm 2 lower than that of CFO (2.13 Ω·cm 2 ). The electronic conductivity value (σ) of CC4FO was 0.614 at 750 °C and the activation energy (E a ) of CC4FO was 102.81 kJ/mol. The results indicated that improvements in the ORR activity of the CFO spinel material were mainly attributed to an increase in oxygen vacancy concentration and oxygen surface exchange rate due to Ca doping, CC4FO showed promising potential as SOFC cathode.

Anchoring CoFe2O4 nanoparticles on ZnO for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation in tetracycline degradation: Performance, mechanism and degradation pathway

Qian Tang,Yixin Fan,Yin Zhu,Kai Wu,Jialin Song,Yuwei Sun,Yonghui Gao

The development of a catalyst with high efficiency and low metal leaching is highly essential for transition metal-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators. In this study, a composite catalyst of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles anchored on ZnO (CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO) was successfully synthesized through coprecipitation coupled with calcination. Given that CoFe 2 O 4 and ZnO have opposing zeta potentials, their combination was strengthened by electrostatic forces. Moreover, the pH buffering environment provided by the ZnO carrier considerably reduced the degree of metal leaching; furthermore, the degree of aggregation of the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles greatly decreased in the presence of ZnO, exposing more active sites for PMS activation. Consequently, a tetracycline (TC) removal rate of 96.5 % was achieved by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO within 10 min, with less than 0.5 % metal leaching, and the removal rates reached over 90 % over a wide range of pH values (3.0 11.0). Through the detection of reactive species, electrochemical analysis and comparison of catalyst components before and after the reaction, an activation mechanism for PMS mediated by CoFe 2 O 4 @ZnO was proposed, and SO 4 •− , 1 O 2 , and electron transfer played a dominant role in PMS activation for TC removal. HPLC MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed three main pathways for TC degradation, and the results of software prediction and hydroponic experiments with peas indicated a general reduction in the toxicity of intermediate products. This work provides valuable theoretical and technical insights into metal-based catalysts for PMS activation.

Degradation of organic contaminants in the CoFe2O4/peroxymonosulfate process: The overlooked role of Co(II)-PMS complex

Xinhong Li,Zihao Zhao,Hongchao Li,Jieshu Qian

Cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) has been widely employed as a catalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), in which hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) are generally recognized as the main reactive species responsible for the degradation of pollutants. In this study, we find that both one-electron transfer and oxygen-atom transfer reactions are involved in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS process, by using methyl phenyl sulfoxide (MPSO) as a chemical probe. Results from radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments indicate that the free radicals (i.e., • OH and SO 4 •− ) play only a minor role in the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). A mechanism involving Co(II)-PMS complex both on the surface of CoFe 2 O 4 and in solution as the dominant reactive species is proposed. Furthermore, the degradation performance of SMX under different conditions were investigated to further cognize the Co(II)-PMS complex-mediated oxidation process. This study broadens our understanding of the role of transition metal-based catalysts in the activation of PMS for the degradation of organic pollutants.

One-pot hydrothermal synthesis of octahedral CoFe/CoFe2O4 submicron composite as heterogeneous catalysts with enhanced peroxymonosulfate activity

Haiming Sun,Xijia Yang,Lijun Zhao,Tianhao Xu,Jianshe Lian

Here we report a flexible one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of an octahedral CoFe/CoFe2O4 submicron composite used as a superior Fenton-like catalyst for the decomposition of organic pollutants in water. As a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalyst, the non-toxic CoFe/CoFe2O4 submicron composite can highly efficiently decompose Orange II (30 mg L−1, 1.5 min and 60 mg L−1, 3 min). Especially, the CoFe/CoFe2O4 submicron composite exhibits better generalization for the degradation of different organic pollutants and excellent reusability due to its large size and structural stability. Furthermore, its high saturation magnetization (123.7 emu g−1) makes it convenient to magnetically separate from aqueous phase after catalysing the reaction, and its relatively large size is conducive to solving or minimizing secondary pollution. Meanwhile, the probable mechanism of PMS activation with CoFe/CoFe2O4 catalyst is proposed.

Three-dimensional flower-like magnetic CoFe-LDHs/CoFe2O4 composites activating peroxymonosulfate for high efficient degradation of aniline

Jialing Sheng,Jiangyan Xu,Benyuan Qin,Hongmei Jiang

In this study, 3D flower-like magnetic CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 was prepared by a facile urea hydrothermal method and utilized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading aniline (AN). CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 was systematically characterized to explore the relationship between its structure and catalytic performance. Compared with CoFe-LDHs synthesized by co-precipitation method, CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 exhibited three dimensional structure and larger specific surface, which could increase the degradation efficiency of AN markedly. 96% of 10 mg L −1 AN could be eliminated by 0.3 mM PMS and 50 mg L −1 CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 at initial pH 6 within 5 min and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency could be high to 52.8% in 30 min. CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 can be separated by a magnet easily due to its magnetism, which makes it avoid secondary pollution and provide convenience. After recycling six times, the degradation efficiency still maintained at 92.6%. Besides, CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS can degrade AN in practical water samples effectively. In addition, the possible mechanism of CoFe-LDHs/CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system for the degradation of AN was proposed. The radical scavenging experiments confirmed that SO 4 · - , HO· and O 2 · - were involved and SO 4 · - played a dominant role in the degradation of AN, and it was further proved by electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) as well. Our findings can provide some new insights into the efficient and skillful design and application of heterogeneous catalyst for environmental remediation.

A pH-responsive dual-enzyme nanozyme based on nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoFe2O4 for dopamine colorimetric sensing

Huan Li,Rongbin Ye,Chenghao Xie,Hongxu Guo

N-doped carbon/CoFe₂O₄ nanozyme with pH-switchable POD/CAT activity from PBA precursor. • Enables sensitive colorimetric DA detection at pH 3–11 with LODs of 0.0179/0.0488 μM. • High selectivity and recovery (90–103%) in serum show potential for bioanalysis and POC diagnostics. In this work, the design and synthesis of a pH-responsive dual-enzyme nanozyme based on nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoFe 2 O 4 spinel (C(N)@CoFe 2 O 4 ) derived from cobalt-doped Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) has been reported. The material was obtained through controlled calcination, with the 500 °C sample (C(N)@CoFe 2 O 4 _500) exhibiting high crystallinity, a large specific surface area (256.30 m 2 ·g −1 ), and uniform distribution of nitrogen-doped carbon layers and spinel active sites. Innovatively, the composite displays pH-regulated dual-enzyme mimetic activity: under acidic conditions (pH 2.9) it acts as a peroxidase mimic, catalyzing H 2 O 2 -mediated oxidation of dopamine (DA) to dopamine quinone (absorption at 370 nm), while under alkaline conditions (pH 9.0) it exhibits catalase-like behaviour, promoting H 2 O 2 -driven oxidative self-polymerization of DA to polydopamine (absorption at 470 nm). This pH-dependent catalytic switching, attributed to surface charge modulation and differential substrate affinity, enables reliable DA detection across a broad pH range — a key advance over conventional single-pH nanozyme sensors. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity with detection limits of 0.0179 μM (acidic) and 0.0488 μM (alkaline),and quantification limits of 0.0597 μM (acidic) and 0.163 μM (alkaline), excellent selectivity against common interferents, and good recovery rates (90–103%) in spiked porcine serum samples. The work presents a new strategy for designing smart, environment-adaptive nanozymes from PBA precursors, with promising potential in bioanalysis and point-of-care diagnostics. Construction of CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 heterojunction for under visible light PMS activation: ROS contribution order and mechanism

Guijuan Liu,Xiaolong Zhang,Lijuan Tan,Weixing Li

The integration of photocatalytic process with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation constitutes a promising strategy for eliminating organic pollutants in aqueous solutions. Despite notable advances in CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 composites, studies on their application in visible-light-responsive PMS-activated tetracycline (TC) degradation remain insufficient, particularly in the systematic elucidation of the quantitative order of ROS contributions and associated mechanisms. To address this knowledge gap, a recyclable CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via the sol–gel method. The composites demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic performance with 97.8% TC degradation in 60 min under visible-light irradiation. The kinetic rate constant of 0.056 min −1 , which was 3.7 and 3.2 times that of pure g-C 3 N 4 (0.015 min −1 ) and CoFe 2 O 4 (0.017 min −1 ). Moreover, the developed catalyst exhibited excellent stability along with tolerance to common anions and compatibility with various organic matrices. By coupling radical quenching experiments with ESR spectroscopy, a definitive degradation contribution order for the reactive species in this system was firstly established as: 1 O 2 > SO 4 · - > O 2 · - > h + > · OH. A plausible mechanism for TC degradation was thus put forward. It provides a viable approach for developing high-performance and durable g-C 3 N 4 -derived photocatalytic system, which can be effectively utilized in environmental remediation process.

Electrochemically enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation by a CoFe2O4@CPANI flow-through porous catalytic membrane electrode for norfloxacin degradation

Cong Ma,Jing Li,Qian Xu,Jinyun Lu,Yiyang Pan,Liang Wang,Xiangji Kong

Conventional low-pressure membrane filtration shows limited removal of low-molecular-weight antibiotics, while homogeneous persulfate activation systems suffer from difficult catalyst recovery. Herein, a self-supporting cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) @carbonized polyaniline (CPANI) flow-through porous catalytic membrane electrode was developed for electrocatalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, integrating catalyst immobilization, interfacial electron transfer, and oxidative degradation within a single membrane-electrode system. Under optimized conditions (current density of 5 mA·cm −2 , PMS concentration of 0.5 mM, and initial pH of 7.3), 96.7% of norfloxacin (NOR) was removed within 20 min. The system also exhibited broad pH tolerance, resistance to anion interference, and stable cycling performance. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses indicated that NOR degradation involved radical pathways mediated by •OH, SO 4 •- , and O 2 •- , as well as a non-radical pathway mediated by 1 O 2 . Among the individual reactive species, 1 O 2 was the most influential, while both radical and non-radical pathways contributed to NOR degradation. This work provides a membrane-electrode strategy for efficient PMS activation and oxidative degradation of antibiotic contaminants.

Highly dispersed CoFe2O4 spinel on biomass-derived 3D porous carbon framework for much enhanced Fenton-like reactions

Zhiyu Yang,Yizhe Huang,Xin Li,Zhiwei Jiang,Yuwen Chen,Song Yang,Hector F. Garces,Yu Sun,Kai Yan

Rational design of the low-cost, highly efficient and easily recyclable catalyst to directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is crucial for the efficient removal of organic pollutants in the sewage treatment. Herein, hyperdispersed CoFe 2 O 4 spinel nanoparticles were successfully in-situ fabricated on biomass-derived 3D porous carbon framework (C) by the facile one-step solvothermal method (CoFe 2 O 4 /C). These as-prepared CoFe 2 O 4 /C exhibit superior performance in the Fenton-like removal of four quinolones by the combination of experimental work and theoretical calculation. Experimental results prove that CoFe 2 O 4 /C catalyst can directly activate PMS to efficiently remove four types of quinolones in 12 min without the external energy consumption. The characterization results show that hyperdispersed CoFe 2 O 4 (18.0 ± 5.0 nm) nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on the matrix of C, exhibit a large specific surface area of 733.1 m 2 /g, and present rich oxygen vacancies (O vs ), thus exposing more reactive sites and generating more reactive oxygen species (ROS). In CoFe 2 O 4 /C + PMS system, ∼97.5% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) is removed within 12 min, which is far superior to other candidates previously reported. Other quinolones (e.g., ∼96.8% of ofloxacin (OFL), ∼100% of levofloxacin (LEV), and ∼86.4% of norfloxacin (NOR)) can also be efficiently degraded under the same conditions. Based on quenching experiments, electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, these superior activities are mainly due to the free radical (SO 4 ·- , ·OH, and ·O 2 – ) and non-free radical ( 1 O 2 ), whereas SO 4 ·- and ·OH are the major reactive oxygen species. In addition, these CoFe 2 O 4 /C catalysts remain stable even after five cycles. Subsequently, degradation pathways are rationally proposed. This work provides a feasible and universal strategy for the direct activation of PMS in wastewater treatment.

Luan Minh Nguyen,Ngoan Thi Thao Nguyen,Thuy Thi Thanh Nguyen,Dai Hai Nguyen,Duyen Thi Cam Nguyen,Thuan Van Tran

The global occurrence of textile dyes pollution has recently emerged, posing a serious threat to ecological systems. To abate dye contamination, we here developed a novel magnetic porous CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) nanocomposite by incorporating magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles with MIL–53(Al) metal–organic framework. This nanocomposite possessed a surface area of 197.144 m 2  g −1 and a pore volume of 0.413 cm 3  g −1 . The effect of contact time (5–120 min), concentration (5–50 mg L −1 ), dosage (0.1–1.0 g L −1 ), and pH (2–10) on Congo red adsorption was clarified. CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) could remove 95.85% of Cong red dye from water with an accelerated kinetic rate of 0.6544 min −1 within 10 min. The kinetic and isotherm models showed the predominance of Bangham and Temkin. According to Langmuir, the maximum uptake capacities of CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al), CoFe 2 O 4 , and MIL–53(Al) adsorbents were 43.768, 17.982, and 15.295 mg g −1 , respectively. CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) was selected to optimize Cong red treatment using Box–Behnken experimental design. The outcomes showed that CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) achieved the highest experimental uptake capacity of 35.919 mg g −1 at concentration (29.966 mg L −1 ), time (14.926 min), and dosage (0.486 g L −1 ). CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) could treat dye mixture (methylene blue, methyl orange, Congo red, malachite green, and crystal violet) with an outstanding removal efficiency of 81.24% for 30 min, and could be reused up to five cycles. Therefore, novel recyclable and stable CoFe 2 O 4 @MIL–53(Al) is recommended to integrate well with real dye treatments systems.

Highly efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with CoFe2O4 in a wide pH range

Yinghao Li,Wenjie Zhu,Qian Guo,Xi Wang,Liming Zhang,Xiaoya Gao,Yongming Luo

The cobalt ferrite materials (Co x Fe 3−x O 4 ) with different molar ratios of Co:Fe (1:16, 1:8, 1:4, 1:2, and 3:4) were synthesized by simple co-precipitation method, and used for catalyzing activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The effects of catalyst dose, PMS dose, pH value, and inorganic ions on the degradation of SMX were investigated. Particularly, the degradation efficiency of SMX reached 91% within 10 min in CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS, and the removal rate of SMX achieved 81% at first 1 min. Meanwhile, the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS reaction system exhibited excellent catalytic performance at a wide pH range from 3.00 to 11.00. The CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst could be easily magnetically separated and exhibited high stability in cycle experiments. EPR and quenching experiments showed that 1 O 2 , SO 4 − , and OH species were produced in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system, especially OH and 1 O 2 played dominant roles during the degradation of SMX. The catalytic degradation mechanism of SMX in the CoFe 2 O 4 /SMX system was proposed, involving radical process and non-radical process. This work will provide a new way for the efficient treatment of wastewater especially those containing SMX compounds.

Ultra-broadband and covalently linked core–shell CoFe2O4@PPy nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide for microwave absorption

Ling Ding,Xiaoxiao Zhao,Ying Huang,Jing Yan,Tiehu Li,Panbo Liu

Covalent bond usually ensures a stable connection between nonmetallic atoms. However, the traditional reflux method usually requires the construction of complex instruments and equipment with tedious steps to ensure airtightness and reaction stability. In this work, an advanced method is adopted to bind core–shell CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy and rGO tightly via the aid of 2-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ethanamine (PyEA), dispense with a high-temperature environment or protective gas . Cobalt ferrite core and polypyrrole shell collaborate to approach suitable magnetic and conduction loss, while reduced graphene oxide usually provides a stable sheet structure for interface multiple reflections, and replenish the insufficient dielectric loss. The filled biscuit-shaped covalently bond CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy-rGO has a fantastically broad absorption bandwidth of 13.12 GHz under the thickness of 3.6 mm, together with a minimum reflection loss of −50.1 dB at 6.56 GHz, achieving both impedance matching and attenuation matching, and effectively responding to all electromagnetic waves in the X and Ku bands. Thus, the covalently bonded CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy-rGO has potential application in broadband absorption.
