Green hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting currently suffers from the key issues of high energy consumption and cost. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of highly efficient and stable clustered CoP nanowires electrocatalysts on nickel foam. Moreover, an ion exchange strategy was proposed to precisely control the doping content of iron to further modify the intrinsic electrochemical activity of CoP nanowires. The introduction of iron effectively alters the surface atomic configuration and electronic structure of CoP and increases the active sites, thus accelerating the overall reaction rate and enhancing the catalytic performance. It has been demonstrated that the CoFeP-30-30/NF electrode exhibits platinum-like catalytic activity with only an overpotential of 29.8 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and outstanding stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction . The synthetic strategy of CoFeP/NF electrode proposed in this work will significantly promote the development of highly efficient transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts with lower overpotential and better stability.

The imitation and exploration of natural structures and characteristics are the inspiration source for science and technology progress. Herein, we report a method for preparing CoP anchored carbon microtubes (CoP@BCMT) by continuous hydrothermal, carbonization and phosphorization processes using cattail fibers (CFs) as carbon sources. The surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups acted as the growth sites for CoP fixed and grew in special positions. Co was anchored to BCMT surface through –OH groups and C-O-Co bonds were formed between CoP and BCMT. Surface bonding can ensure the growth of CoP at specific sites. The ultra-thin carbon layer covered CoP was deposited by the deposition of suspended carbon during CFs carbonization. CoP size, dispersibility and adhesion were maintained well due to surface coating and bonding. C-O-Co bonds promoted electron transfer and optimized adsorption energy of hydrogen, which was evaluated by density functional theory calculations. CoP@BCMT exhibited a low overpotential of 49 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability for 72 h. We modified commercial carbon nanotubes with surface hydroxyl groups and then combined with CoP, which greatly improved the catalytic performance. This work provides us with ideas for learning and using biomass to prepare advanced catalysts.

Electrochemical water electrolysis is an efficient important way to produce hydrogen. In this work, durable and low-cost Co 2 P/CoP was synthesized by a facile one-step calcination reaction. Subsequently, Co 2 P/CoP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microcopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). To evaluate the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, Co 2 P/CoP was measured by electrochemical tests. Co 2 P/CoP exhibited excellent HER performance with a small overpotential of 196 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a smaller Tafel slope of 53 mV dec −1 in alkaline media. Moreover, Co 2 P/CoP exhibited superior stability with long-term operation of 24 h.

Electrocatalytic water splitting, as an ideal technology in renewable energy applications , suffers from high electrical energy consumption due to the slow kinetics of HER and OER reactions. Therefore, it is urgent to design efficient bifunctional catalysts to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, a self-supported electrode, anchoring CoP nanoparticles on N-doped carbon/graphene (NC-G) and chemically growing on Ni foam as a whole electrode (denoted as NC-G-CoP/NF) displays promising electrocatalytic performance in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, with a low overpotentials of 68 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 255 mV at 50 mA cm −2 for OER. This bifunctional electrocatalyst only needs 1.435 V to generate 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to the following factors: i) inherent nature of transition metal phosphides, ii) abundant and high dispersion N active sites in NC-G, iii) strong interaction between the NC-G and CoP nanoparticles, and iv) rapid electron transfer between the catalytic centers and Nickle foam. This provides a new perspective to design efficient electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting.

The combination of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) can be an effective way to amplify the signal intensity. In this work, an ECL aptasensor with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid–decorated cobalt phosphate (denoted as PTCA/CoP) as the ECL emitter and Au nanoparticles (NPs) as plasma was proposed for diclofenac assay. The prepared PTCA/CoP with special 1D/2D structure exhibited good ability and excellent ECL performance. The diclofenac aptamer acted as a bridge to link the PTCA/CoP and Au NPs; thus, the ECL performance of PTCA/CoP was greatly improved due to the plasma effect of Au NPs. Besides, it was found that the ECL signal of the aptasensor was obviously quenched by the introduction of diclofenac, which might be due to the transformation from the LSPR process to the resonance energy transform (RET) process. Under optimal conditions, the difference of ECL intensity was negatively correlated with the concentration of diclofenac in the range 0.1 pM to 10 μM with a low detection limit of 0.072 pM at the potential of −1.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl ( S / N = 3). The aptasensor was proved to be suitable for the detection of diclofenac in real samples, suggesting its great practicability. Graphical abstract

Lithium‑sulfur (Li-S) battery with high theoretical energy density is regard as one of the most appealing competitors for the promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, the severe polysulfide shuttling and the low electrical conductivity of sulfur cathode limit the practical application of Li-S batteries. Therefore, the designing of sulfur host materials with high electrochemical activity and high sulfur content have great significance for Li-S batteries. Here, we reported a novel hybrid nanostructure (a new sulfide matrix material) through the pyrolytic reduction phosphorization strategy form ZIF-67, in which CoP nanoparticles were embedded into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes hollow polyhedron (NCNHP). Due to the synergistic effect of highly active Co, CoP and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs), the Co/CoP-NCNHP hybrid improved the adsorption of polysulfides. Micropores in Co/CoP-NCNHP effectively impregnate sulfur and inhibit the diffusion of polysulfides through physical constraint. In addition, the Co/CoP-NCNHP conductive network of nitrogen doping carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) interconnection promoted electron transport and electrolyte infiltration. Therefore, the specific capacity, rate capability and cycling stability of Li-S batteries are significantly improved. In particular, we delivered the Co/CoP-NCNHP based cathode (loaded with 74.09 wt% sulfur), which could main the specific capacity of 885 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles of 0.5C current.

Designing non-noble-metal electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability towards hydrogen evolution reaction is vitally necessary for the demands of renewable and clean energy sources. Herein, an advanced water reduction electrocatalyst with a two-dimensional (2D) morphology based on CoP embedded on the surface of nanocarbon (CoP@C) is fabricated, which is derived from 2D Co-MOF by low-temperature phosphorization. Benefiting from the unique 2D morphology as well as more exposed (211) facet, such electrocatalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity in both alkaline and acid media in comparison to the traditional three-dimensional (3D) structure CoP@C with the overpotentials of 127 and 236 mV for HER at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Density functional theory simulations unveil that the binding energies of the adsorbed intermediate species become more appropriate on the (211) facet compared with that on the (011) facet. This could improve the dissociation of H2O and desorption of H*, and thus facilitate the electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, the 2D electrocatalyst demonstrates enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction performance compared with its 3D counterparts. When the 2D CoP@C is employed as both the anode and cathode, a potential of 1.67 V is required to achieve the 10 mA cm−2 current density. In addition, it still exhibits good durability and even continued to work for 50 h.

A novel and efficient immobilized Au nanoparticle catalyst, Au-SH/SO3H-COP, has been synthesized via the in situ reduction of Au3+ ions by thiol groups within a thiol-functionalized covalent organic polymer (SH-COP). This approach leverages the thiol groups as intrinsic reductants, eliminating the need for external agents. Simultaneously, during Au nanoparticle formation, anchored sulfonic acid (–SO3H) sites are generated, which function as Brønsted acid co-catalysts to synergistically enhance catalytic performance. Characterization results confirmed the formation of uniformly dispersed Au nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution centered at 2–3 nm. The covalent anchoring of nanoparticles to the SH-COP support through unreacted thiol groups effectively prevents aggregation and leaching. For the model hydration of phenylacetylene, Au-SH/SO3H-COP exhibited excellent catalytic activity, achieving 92% yield without additional acid additives. Moreover, it displayed broad substrate compatibility across diverse alkynes (aryl and aliphatic), affording 84–94% yields. The catalyst also showed high recyclability, retaining 89% yield after six cycles with negligible Au leaching, underscoring its robustness and reusability.

For the intrinsic limitations of CoP in alkaline water splitting (irrational electronic structure, poor conductivity, and agglomeration-caused low active site utilization), this work puts forward a bifunctional optimization strategy: "Fe-doping electronic modulation coupled with rGO support synergistic enhancement", and synthesizes the Fe-CoP@rGO composite catalyst (Fe-doped CoP nanoparticles anchored on rGO) via wet-chemical method and phosphidation. The introduction of Fe induces electron rearrangement by substituting Co atoms in CoP lattice significantly increases the proportion of highactivity Co 3+ sites and optimizes the adsorption energy barriers of *H/*OH intermediates. Meanwhile, the high conductivity of rGO constructs an efficient electron transport network, and its large specific surface area inhibits nanoparticle agglomeration through steric hindrance, enhancing the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) twice that of pure CoP.Bifunctional catalytic performance tests show that Fe-CoP@rGO achieves low overpotentials of 86.2 mV (HER) and 285 mV (OER) at 10 mA cm -2 , which are significantly superior to those of CoP@rGO. When assembled into an overall water splitting device, it only requires 1.61 V to reach 10 mA cm -2 , with no performance degradation after 24 h of continuous operation in 1 M KOH and a Faraday efficiency close to 100%. This study provides a clear structure-activity relationship and a scalable optimization pathway for designing high-performance and stable non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts through the synergistic effect of electronic structure modulation and support function enhancement

Integrating biomass upgrading via electrocatalytic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation (HMFOR) with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) presents a promising strategy to reduce the energy consumption of green hydrogen production while simultaneously generating high-value chemicals. However, the performance and selectivity of electrocatalysts for these reactions still require further improvement. In this work, a CoP-CeO 2 heterostructure nanosheet array supported on nickel foam (CoP-CeO 2 /NF) was developed as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both HMFOR and HER. The successful construction of the heterointerface was verified through TEM observations, while XPS analysis confirmed interfacial electron transfer from CoP to CeO 2 . This electronic interaction optimizes the adsorption properties of CoP toward key reaction intermediates, and the abundant oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 enhance adsorptive selectivity toward oxygen-containing groups in HMF. As a result, the optimized CoP-CeO 2 /NF drives HMFOR at a low potential of 1.37 V to achieve 200 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH with 100 mM HMF, and further requires only 1.2 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 in a two-electrode system coupled with HER, which is significantly lower than the voltage required for conventional water electrolysis (1.4–1.6 V). Furthermore, by enhancing the adsorption capability for HMF and reaction intermediates, our electrocatalysts effectively mitigate competition from the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over a broad potential range, particularly at higher voltages, and maintains a Faraday efficiency above 85 % within 1.3–1.6 V. This work provides a compelling approach to designing bifunctional electrocatalysts for energy-saving green hydrogen production integrated with biomass upgrading.

The rational design and construction of amorphous/crystalline heterostructures with multiphasic interfaces represents an effective approach to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of transition metal phosphides (TMP)-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP heterostructured nanofibers electrocatalyst (CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs) via electrospinning, oxidation, in situ growth of CoNiFe-PBA nanocubes and subsequent phosphorization, in which amorphous Co and Ni co-doped FeP nanosheets are anchored on crystalline nanofibers composed of CoP and Ni 2 P. Electrochemical tests combined with theoretical calculations demonstrates that the construction of the amorphous/crystalline heterostructure with triphasic interfaces induces electronic rearrangement of CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs, which leads to the upshift of the O 2p band center of the CoNiFeOOH species formed after surface reconstruction, thereby facilitating the OER through the LOM pathway and ultimately enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity. As a result, the CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs exhibits low overpotentials of 256, 297 and 311 mV to achieve high current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, the electrolytic cell assembled with CoP/Ni 2 P@FeP NFs and Pt/C only requires voltages of 1.508, 1.607 and 1.690 V to deliver current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, and exhibits outstanding long-term stability at 200 mA cm −2 for 200 h.

Bifunctional seawater electrolysis is limited by the activity–durability trade-off in chloride-containing media. Here, in-situ-grown Co-BTC MOF arrays on nickel foam were converted into self-supporting CoP/Co 2 P-C/NF electrodes, enabling controlled evolution Co 2 P-rich to CoP-rich compositions and identifying a favourable CoP/Co 2 P coexistence range. The continuous conductive carbon framework shortens charge-transport paths, maintains electrolyte–electrode contact, and supports rapid interfacial kinetics. Theoretical calculations indicate that the CoP/Co 2 P biphasic interface modulates intermediate adsorption, weakening Cl adsorption while favouring water-splitting-related intermediates, consistent with suppressed chlorine-related competition. At 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, the optimized electrode requires 31 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 180 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and drives overall water splitting at 1.47 V with stable operation over 100 h at 1.56 V. In 1.0 M KOH + seawater, it maintains low voltage and outperforms Pt/C||RuO 2 , providing a reproducible phase-ratio regulation strategy for non-precious bifunctional seawater electrolysis electrodes.
