Stabilizing lattice oxygen interface with dual-functional NiFe2O4 coating and Ni/Fe co-doping strategy towards high-performance sodium-ion layered oxide cathodes

Ying Lei,Haiyan Zhang,Changsheng Yang,Xiang Peng,Yao Xu,Yangming Yu

P2-Na 0.67 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 2 (MNF811) has garnered considerable attention due to its low cost and high energy density, while the poor structural and air stability and lattice oxygen evolution lead to undesirable electrochemical performance. Here, a NiFe 2 O 4 surface coating triggering a Ni/Fe co-doping strategy has been reported to suppress lattice oxygen evolution, eliminate poor air stability and mitigate the detrimental P2-OP4 phase transition. Furthermore, the NiFe 2 O 4 coating layer with air stability protects P2-Na 0.67 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 2 (MFN811@NF) cathode from reacting with moist air, and endows the P2-Na 0.67 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 2 electrode with three-dimensional fast sodium-ion diffusion channels and stable cathode/electrolyte interface (CEI), benefiting from the NiFe 2 O 4 coating layer. Ni/Fe co-doping by increasing the hybridization of the O(2p)- transition metal (TM) (3d-eg*) states, stabilizes excited state lattice oxygen and suppresses the irreversible migration of TM ions and the Jahn-Teller effect, mitigating adverse phase transitions and inhibiting structural degradation. In comparison to the Na 0.67 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 2 electrode, the initial discharge capacity of the 10 % NiFe 2 O 4 -coated P2-Na 0.67 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 2 (MFN811@NF-10) cathode was 114.4 mA h g −1 in the voltage range of 1.5–4.3 V at a high current density of 5C, with a capacity retention rate of 66.7 % after 1000 cycles. Eventually, the ex-situ X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that NiFe 2 O 4 coating layer and Ni/Fe co-doping can prevent structural/chemical transformations and stabilize excited state lattice oxygen to realize high specific capacity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also confirm that Ni/Fe co-doping stabilizes lattice oxygen through the strengthening of transition metal–oxygen bonds. This dual modification strategy may provide crucial insights for the development of high-performance sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

In situ construction of hollow carbon spheres with N, Co, and Fe co-doping as electrochemical sensors for simultaneous determination of dihydroxybenzene isomers

Hui Yang,Shunxing Li,Huiwu Yu,Fengying Zheng,Luxiu Lin,Jie Chen,Yuehai Li,Ye Lin

Control of the active sites/centers plays an important role in the design of novel electrode materials with unusual properties and achievement of sensors with high performance. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) freestanding multi-doped hollow carbon spheres (N–Co–Fe–HCS) with a layer thickness of 30 nm, which contained multiple active sites of the heteroatom N and transition metals (Co and Fe), were synthesized via a simple template method (with SiO2 as the template) and cost-efficient in situ self-polymerization, self-adsorption/reduction and carbonization strategies. Moreover, a series of hollow carbon sphere composites of the same family (N–HCS, N–Co–HCS and N–Fe–HCS) were prepared by this sensible process using the same method and precursors but different doping elements. These differences lead to different active sites/centers from hollow carbon spheres and improved electrocatalytic activities for dihydroxybenzene isomers. Furthermore, N–Co–Fe–HCS as an electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination performance for catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The detection limit and the linear range were 75 nmol L−1 and 0.5–500 μmol L−1 for CC and 80 nmol L−1 and 0.5–1500 μmol L−1 for HQ, respectively. The interference from the components coexisting in river water on the detection of CC and HQ was not observed. These results indicate that high-performance electrochemical sensors can be constructed by in situ multi-element doping into electrode materials to achieve multi-active sites.

Magnetic-supported catalyst derived from red mud-based Fe-Co PBA for efficient degradation of organic pollutants by activating peroxymonosulfate under visible light

Shitong Liu,Jun Wang,Yang Liu,Baojun Yang,Chunxiao Zhao,Shichao Yu,Chenxu Wang,Guanzhou Qiu,Junwu Liu,Yingchun Fang

To alleviate the environmental pressure caused by the continuous accumulation of solid waste red mud (RM) and organic pollutants, we developed a magnetic-supported catalyst derived from RM-based Fe-Co Prussian blue analogues (RM-Co PBA-D) using RM as the iron source and carrier. Then, the catalyst was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and rhodamine B (RhB). Due to the superior dispersion, strong visible light response, and high photo-generated carrier separation efficiency of the RM-Co PBA-D, the RM-Co PBA-D/PMS/Vis system could completely degrade both TC (10 mg/L) and RhB (20 mg/L) in 30 min, with mineralization efficiencies as high as 70.12 % and 60.59 %, respectively. Several reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as SO 4 ⋅− , ⋅OH − , ⋅O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + were involved in the degradation process, with SO 4 ⋅− and 1 O 2 playing a dominant role. More importantly, except for the production of ROS, the regeneration of active sites (Co 2+ /Fe 2+ ) mediated by photo-generated carriers was also a critical factor in enhancing the removal of organic pollutants. In addition, the constructed system demonstrated significant potential for practical applications, which was attributed to the stable structure and catalytic performance of the catalyst as well as the strong ability of the system to resist interference by impurity anions and detoxify organic pollutants.

Prussian Blue Analogues-Derived Transition-Metal Nitrogen-Doped Carbon (Transition Metal = Fe, Co, Ni) Nanomaterials as Cathodic ORR Electrocatalysts for Mg–Air Batteries

Xiaoyang Dong,Jinxing Wang,Jingdong Yang,Wen Zeng,Guangsheng Huang,Jingfeng Wang

Magnesium (Mg)–air batteries are regarded as promising large-scale energy-storage devices because of their high theoretical energy density, low material cost, intrinsic safety, and environmental benignity. Nevertheless, their practical deployment is severely hindered by sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics at the cathode. Herein, nanoscale transition-metal–nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C, M = Fe, Co, Ni) electrocatalysts─denoted FNC, CNC, and NNC─are prepared by argon-pyrolysis of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs). The cationic and anionic ligands are systematically varied to tailor the crystal phase, pore architecture, and nanoscale M-Nx coordination environment. Comprehensive characterization shows that CNC possesses the highest density of well-dispersed Co-Nx active nanosites embedded in a graphitic matrix. This ensures rapid electron transfer and abundant accessible active centers. Electrochemical tests in alkaline (0.1 M KOH) and neutral (3.5 wt % NaCl) electrolytes demonstrate that CNC delivers the most robust ORR activity and stability (CNC > FNC > NNC) via a near-ideal 4 e pathway. Meanwhile, CNC exhibits better stability than commercial Pt/C in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes. As the cathode nanocatalyst in Mg-air batteries, CNC is found to yield a peak power density of 19.14 mW/cm2─only 0.66 mW/cm2 below that of commercial Pt/C. The decisive role of nanoscale M-Nx coordination environments in boosting ORR kinetics is thus elucidated. This work provides a nanomaterials-driven strategy for developing high-performance, cost-effective electrocatalysts for Mg-air batteries.

Effects of 20 mol% Fe, Co, Ni additions on phase formation, microstructure and mechanical properties of TaCx (x = 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.7) ceramics

Zhonghua Li,Faqiang Shi,Limeng Liu,Jozef Vleugels,Shuigen Huang

TaC x (x = 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.7) ceramics with 20 mol% Fe, Co or Ni addition were prepared by hot pressing TaC and Ta powder mixtures at 1800 °C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , high resolution transmission electron microscopy , X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction were used to investigate the constituent phases and microstructures of the composites. Vickers hardness , flexural strength and fracture toughness were measured. Intermetallic compounds Fe 7 Ta 3 , Co 2 Ta and Ni 3 Ta were formed due to reactions of Fe, Co and Ni with Ta. The remaining TaC and Ta reacted to form hexagonal Ta 2 C, rhombohedral ζ-Ta 4 C 3-z or cubic TaC y depending on the overall C:Ta ratios. The microstructure of the TaC 0.5 –20 mol% Fe, Co, Ni compositions (where C:Ta = 0.5) were composed of intermetallics and fine anisotropic Ta 2 C and ζ-Ta 4 C 3-z grains. As the C:Ta ratio increased to 0.55–0.7, the ζ-Ta 4 C 3-z and TaC y grains were enlarged in size and equiaxed in the TaC 0.55 -, TaC 0.6 -, and TaC 0.7 –20 mol% Fe, Co, Ni compositions. Addition of Ni instead of Fe and Co benefitted to refine microstructures of the composites. The TaC 0.5 –20 mol% Fe, Co, Ni compositions had good flexural strength (580-650 MPa) and fracture toughness (9.3–9.5 MPa·m 1/2 ) due to growth of fine lamellar grains, despite the high Ta 2 C content.

Effects of solvent and annealing on phase evolutions and magnetic properties of Nd2 (Fe, Co)14C hard magnetic powders prepared by mechanochemical method

Haoran Tu,Yu Yan,Dong Cai,Jingxue Wang,Xiaoyun Shang,Hui Tian,Feng Su,Xiaobo Du

Nanocrystalline Nd 2 (Fe, Co) 14 C materials were synthesized by a mechanochemical method. Ball milling in organic solvent (hydrocarbon), Nd 15 Fe 80.6 Co 4 B 0.4 alloy disproportionated into NdH 2+δ , α-Fe (Co) and Fe 7 C 3 phases. H 2 was released from the NdH 2+δ and Nd 2 (Fe, Co) 14 C hard magnetic powders were obtained during the subsequent annealing under vacuum. The effects of hydrocarbon solvent species and annealing condition on phase evolutions and magnetic properties were studied systematically. It is found that the n-hexane is more easily decomposed and makes the disproportion reaction more completed than other common hydrocarbons, which favor the formation of permanent magnetic Nd 2 (Fe, Co) 14 C phase. Scanning electron microscope and Henkel plot analysis verified microstructural and intergranular exchange coupling can be well controlled by the annealing process. The optimum magnetic properties with remanent magnetization 4π M r of 7.35 kG, maximum energy product ( BH ) max of 12.3 MGOe and coercivity i H c of 16.2 kOe were obtained in the sample ball milled in n-hexane and annealed at 800 °C for 2 min with a heating rate of 10 °Cs −1 . The systemical study shows that this method is a promising way to synthesize nano-sized Nd 2 (Fe, Co) 14 C hard magnetic powder suitable for the manufacture of bond permanent magnet.

Peapod-Like Structured B/N Co-Doped Carbon Nanotube Array Encapsulating MxPy (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) Nanoparticles for High-Rate Potassium Storage

Xiwen Tao,Zhengguang Zhang,Zheng Li,Shuangsheng Xiong,Shengmei Wang,Faming Gao,Chen Wang,Li Hou

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have become the desirable alternatives for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) originating from abundant reserves and appropriate redox potential, while the considerable radius size of K+ leading to poor reaction kinetics and huge volume expansion limits the practical application of PIBs. Hybridization of transition-metal phosphides and carbon substrates can effectively optimize the obstacles of poor conductivity, sluggish kinetics, and huge volume variation. Thus, the peapod-like structural MxPy@BNCNTs (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) composites as anode materials for PIBs were synthesized through a facile strategy. Notably, the unique architecture of B/N codoped carbon nanotube array as fast ion/electron transfer pathways effectively improves the electronic conductivity of composites. The MxPy nanoparticles (NPs) are encapsulated in BNCNTs with an amorphous carbon layer (5–10 nm), which discernibly alleviate the volume changes during potassiation/depotassiation. In conclusion, the composites show a commendable cycling performance, possessing reversible capacities of 111, 152, and 122 mA h g–1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g–1 with a negligible capacity loss for FeP@BNCNT, CoP/Co2P@BNCNT, and Ni2P@BNCNT electrodes, respectively. Especially, after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g–1, the CoP/Co2P@BNCNT electrode still possesses a capacity of 87.9 mA h g–1, demonstrating excellent rate performance and long-term life. This work may offer an innovative and viable route to construct a stable architecture for solving the issue of poor stability of TMP-based anodes at a high current density.

Synthesis, characterization, catalytic performance of magnetically recoverable nano-Au/MCeOx (M: Fe, Co and Ni) in direct oxidative esterification of methacrolein and methanol

Tingting Ge,Hui Guo,Cuncun Zuo,Yanxia Zheng,Shuyue Li,Haofei Huang,Ming Wang,Guangjun Cui,Xinpeng Guo,Yuchao Li

Series of magnetic metal-doped cerium oxide (MCeO x , M = Fe, Co and Ni) were synthesized and applied to support nano-gold (Au) as catalyst for synthesis of methyl methacrylate (MMA) through gas-liquid-solid three-phase oxidation esterification of methacrolein (MAL) and methanol (MeOH). Hydrothermal synthesis method was applied for MCeO x preparation and deposition-precipitation method was for nano-Au supported catalyst. The catalysts were characterized through XRD, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, FT-IR, TG, BET, TEM-EDS and VSM. Results showed that Au/FeCeO x had strong magnetic properties and could be easily separated by external magnetism. Moreover, the doping of Fe could improve the redox properties and acidic sites of the catalyst. Catalyst performances were evaluated in a micro batch reactor. 5% - Au/FeCeO x allowed the highest reaction activity to be observed with MAL conversion of 80.2% and MMA selectivity of 96.1%. Surface catalytic reaction mechanism on Au/CeO 2 was established and transition states of oxidative esterification were obtained using density functional theory (DFT). Magnetically recoverable nano-Au/FeCeO x catalysts maintain stable activity after 5 cycles, which makes it a promising catalyst for industrial application.

Graphene in situ composite metal phthalocyanines (TN-MPc@GN, M = Fe, Co, Ni) with improved performance as anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Lihong Tao,Jun Chen,Jianjun Zhao,Sydorov Dmytro,Qian Zhang,Shengwen Zhong

In view of the disadvantage of the limited active site utilization due to the easy aggregation of phthalocyanine compounds, three kinds of graphene composite metal phthalocyanines (TN-MPc@GN, M = Fe, Co, Ni) were prepared using an in situ composite method, and their electrochemical properties were investigated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The layered structure and large specific surface area of graphene are used to disperse phthalocyanine uniformly, so that the conjugated structure (CC/CN/NO) of phthalocyanine is more exposed and the utilization of active sites for embedding lithium ions are greatly enhanced. At the same time, the large surface area is beneficial to the contact between materials and the electrolyte, which results in a faster transmission path. As a result, the first discharge specific capacities of the graphene composite phthalocyanine (TN-MPc@GN, M = Fe, Co, Ni) electrodes are 440.8, 765.0 and 753.9 mA h g−1, respectively. After 420 cycles, the specific capacities increased to 734.6, 844.7 and 949.1 mA h g−1, respectively, which are much higher than those of the pristine three phthalocyanine (TN-MPC, M = Fe, Co, Ni) electrodes without the graphene composite. Using the graphene composite can be an effective strategy to improve the utilization of active sites of organic electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries.

Carbon nanotube-bridged N-doped mesoporous carbon nanosphere with atomic and nanoscaled M (M = Fe, Co) species for synergistically enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Weicun Jiang,Yaling Li,Yunshi Xu,Ting Jiang,Mingyu Zhao,Mengyuan Deng,Rongliang Wu,Yi Wang

Rational design of hierarchically structured carbon nanomaterials and also the facile regulation of their metal species decoration for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are urgently required. Herein, N-doped carbon nanospheres (N-MCN) with plentiful pyridinic and graphitized N-induced active sites were closely bridged with carbon nanotubes to remedy the conductivity loss of N-doping. The as-obtained N-MCN@CNT exhibited hierarchically porous structure with large surfaces area and good conductivity with small charge transfer resistance, which therefore had a superior ORR activity to the other carbon-base catalysts. Importantly, the metal species (M = Fe or Co) can be loaded in this porous N-MCN@CNT via a simple co-pyrolysis, where their numbers and shapes can be easily regulated. It was found the optimal adsorption of metal ions into the precursors produced both single atom and few carbon-coated nanoparticles in M/N-MCN@CNT, which thus synergistically contributed the enhanced ORR performances, including large current density, low onset and half-wave potentials, as well as superior stability and methanol tolerance than those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Moreover, M/N-MCN@CNT also demonstrated comparable oxygen evolution reaction activity to RuO 2 possibly due to the regulated metal species. This work provided a strategy to regulate the nanostructure and intrinsic active sites of carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Molecular Engineering toward Pyrrolic N-Rich M-N4 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu) Single-Atom Sites for Enhanced Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Reaction

Feng Chen,Xi-Lin Wu,Chenyang Shi,Hongjun Lin,Jianrong Chen,Yanpeng Shi,Shaobin Wang,Xiaoguang Duan

Heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions (HFLR) are promising alternative strategies to address the inherent limitations of the classic Fenton systems. Herein, a facile and scale-up approach for the synthesis of transition metal single-atom sites (SA-TM, TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu) coordinated onto pyrrolic N-rich g-C 3 N 4 (PN-g-C 3 N 4 ) scaffold is developed. The regulated pyrrolic N-rich SA-TM catalytic sites exhibit excellent performances for HFLR. As a model of SA-TM/PN-g-C 3 N 4 , SA-Cr/PN-g-C 3 N 4 is efficient for the catalytic oxidation of bisphenol A via HFLR under visible light with outstanding cyclic stability and wide effective pH range (3.0–11.0). The synergy of photocatalysis and single-atom catalysis leads to accelerated production and separation of charge carriers as well as the cycling of Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ couple, consequently boosting the performance in HFLR. Theoretical calculations indicate that the Cr(II)-N 4 sites with the metalloporphyrin-like structure are more reactive than the doped Cr(II) sites in the g-C 3 N 4 matrix, which act as the peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme for efficient and homolytic cleavage of peroxide O  O in H 2 O 2 . This study expands the family of the iron-free Fenton-like systems and provides new strategies to the rational design and precise regulation of on-demand multifunctional single-atom catalysts for advanced water remediation.

Co8FeS8/N,S-Doped Carbons Derived from Fe-Co/S-Bridged Polyphthalocyanine: Efficient Dual-Function Air-Electrode Catalysts for Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Lu Chen,Li−Li Cui,Zizhun Wang,Xingquan He,Wei Zhang,Tewodros Asefa

Efficient, durable, nonprecious metal-based catalysts for electrochemical reactions involving oxygen are needed to advance the widespread use of fuel cells and Zn-air batteries. In this work, hybrid materials composed of bimetallic (Co and Fe) sulfide (Co8FeS8) nanoparticles supported on N,S-doped carbon microparticles that can serve as dual-function oxygen electrocatalysts are synthesized. The synthesis of the materials is performed by preparing and then pyrolyzing silica-protected Fe- and Co-modified, S-containing polyphthalocyanine at different temperatures. The materials are named (Fe,Co)SPPc-T-sp, where T denotes the pyrolysis temperature and sp represents the silica protection applied for their synthesis. Among them, the material synthesized at 900 °C, denoted (Fe,Co)SPPc-900-sp, shows superb electrocatalytic activities in an alkaline solution both toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.830 V vs RHE, and toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential (η10) of 353 mV. The catalytic activities of this material for both reactions are comparable with those of the respective benchmark, precious-metal-based catalysts, namely, Pt/C (20 wt %) and RuO2, respectively. An alkaline Zn-air battery assembled using (Fe,Co)SPPc-900-sp as an air electrode delivers a high peak power density (158.6 mW cm–2) and outstanding charge–discharge cycling stability (for over 50 h). These catalytic performances are better than those of the corresponding battery containing Pt/C and RuO2 electrocatalysts. This work also offers a facile synthetic strategy for the fabrication of robust, inexpensive dual-function electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries.
