Synergetic activation of peroxymonosulfate by MnO2-loaded β-FeOOH catalyst for enhanced degradation of organic pollutant in water

Cong Lyu,Dan He,Zishen Mou,Xuejiao Yang

In this paper, manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) loaded iron oxyhydroxide (β-FeOOH) was synthesized aiming to improve the catalytic performance of β-FeOOH as peroxymonosulfate activator. The β-FeOOH@MnO 2 /PMS system exhibited excellent performance and its reaction rate constant of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation (0.0533 min −1 ) was approximately 2.3 times as that in β-FeOOH/PMS system (0.0232 min −1 ). β-FeOOH@MnO 2 possessed superior properties as catalyst than β-FeOOH, owing to the higher surface hydroxyl density with higher specific surface area , redox ability and electronic transmission rate. Moreover, on the basis of the analysis from FTIR and XPS , it was found that the redox reaction of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ synergistically activated PMS as well as the generation of FeOH + and MnOH 2+ accelerated activating PMS in the β-FeOOH@MnO 2 /PMS system. Thus, MnO 2 and FeOOH synergistically activated PMS to reactive oxygen species (ROS). And 1 O 2 , O 2 − and OH were identified as predominant ROS in the β-FeOOH@MnO 2 /PMS system on the basis of the result from quenching experiments and ESR . As a result, TOC removal rate was increased up to 22.62%. Additionally, β-FeOOH@MnO 2 exhibited good stability with low iron dissolution and manganese dissolution. Generally, this study proposed that β-FeOOH@MnO 2 was an efficient and environmental catalyst as PMS activator for organic pollutant degradation in water.

Highly efficient Ag@β-FeOOH/cellulose nanofibril composite hydrogel for rapid photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light

Huiyang Bian,Tingting Xi,Yufan Feng,Jun Chen,Wenhao Wang,Zixuan Zhao,Sha Wang,Weiqi Wei,Xuelian Zhou

Improving the dispersibility and recoverability of powdered catalysts is essential for developing efficient and cost-effective photocatalytic systems. Herein, silver-loaded β -FeOOH/quaternized cellulose nanofibrils composite hydrogel, denoted as Ag@ β -FeOOH/QCNF, was successfully prepared via an in-situ synthesis approach combined with photodeposition for environmental remediation. The composite hydrogel consisted of a three‑dimensional porous network, with β -FeOOH photocatalysts and Ag nanoparticles uniformly distributed. The composite hydrogel not only exhibited adsorption capacity toward organic pollutant but also established multidimensional electron‑transport pathways that facilitated the migration of photo-generated charge carrier, thereby significantly enhancing light-harvesting efficiency. The synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalysis enabled hydrogel to achieve nearly complete degradation of tetracycline (100%) within 30  min under simulated visible light, while maintaining a removal efficiency above 94% over five consecutive cycles, demonstrating outstanding stability and reusability. Free radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that ·OH and h + were the primary reactive species responsible for pollutant degradation. Overall, this study presents a straightforward approach to construct 3D network-structured hydrogel materials with efficient photocatalytic performance, which holds significant potential for applications in water purification.

DES-Mediated Mild Synthesis of Synergistically Engineered 3D FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Bingxian Zhu,Yachao Liu,Yue Yan,Hui Wang,Yu Zhang,Ying Xin,Weijuan Xu,Qingshan Zhao

Hydrogen energy is a pivotal carrier for achieving carbon neutrality, requiring green and efficient production via water electrolysis. However, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves a sluggish four-electron transfer process, resulting in high overpotentials, while the prohibitive cost and complex preparation of precious metal catalysts impede large-scale commercialization. In this study, we develop a FeCo-based bimetallic deep eutectic solvent (FeCo-DES) as a multifunctional reaction medium for engineering a three-dimensional (3D) coral-like FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF composite via a mild one-step impregnation approach (70 °C, ambient pressure). The FeCo-DES simultaneously serves as the solvent, metal source, and redox agent, driving the controlled in situ assembly of FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl hybrids on Ni(OH)2/NiOOH-coated nickel foam (NF). This hierarchical architecture induces synergistic enhancement through geometric structural effects combined with multi-component electronic interactions. Consequently, the FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF catalyst achieves a remarkably low overpotential of 197 mV at 100 mA cm−2and a Tafel slope of 65.9 mV dec−1, along with 98% current retention over 24 h chronopotentiometry. This study pioneers a DES-mediated strategy for designing robust composite catalysts, establishing a scalable blueprint for high-performance and low-cost OER systems.

In situ growth of FeOOH nanoflakes on iron foam for efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate in organic pollutant degradation

Lin Deng,Zhihui Xia,Ting Peng,Zhou Shi,Haojie Zhang

Sulfadiazine (SDZ), a widely used antibiotic, poses significant environmental risks due to its persistence and potential to induce bacterial resistance. This study presents a novel FeOOH-modified iron foam (FeOOH/IF) catalyst for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade SDZ. The catalyst was synthesized via a simple NaBH₄-induced surface modification, forming FeOOH nanoflakes with abundant oxygen vacancies. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, EPR) confirmed the successful formation of FeOOH/IF with enhanced catalytic properties. The FeOOH/IF/PMS system achieved nearly complete SDZ removal (100 %) within 20 min, exhibiting 4.7 times higher k obs value (0.18 min −1 ) than unmodified IF (0.038 min −1 ). Mechanistic studies revealed a dual radicals ( • OH and SO 4 • − ) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 , Fe IV O, electron transfer) oxidation pathway, with non-radical processes dominating (53.12 % contribution). DFT calculations and LC-MS identified four primary degradation pathways, demonstrating effective detoxification of SDZ. Moreover, the as-synthesized exhibited excellent recyclability (over 90 % removal in the four repeated cycles) and versatility, efficiently degrading various organic pollutants (tetracycline, carbamazepine, etc.). This work provides a highly efficient, stable, and eco-friendly PMS-activating catalyst for antibiotic wastewater treatment, with insights into reaction mechanisms and practical applicability.

Hierarchical Superaerophobic Nanoarray Electrode (FeOOH/CoFe LDH) as an Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyst for Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis

Dongdong Wang,Lili Liu,Yue Liu,Wenhao Luo,Yaojia Xie,Tiantao Xiao,Yinhu Wang,Zhihui Song,Heng Zhang,Xindong Wang

The lack of highly efficient and long-term stable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely hampers the advancement of alkaline seawater electrolysis. Herein, a hierarchical superaerophobic OER catalyst electrode, FeOOH/CoFe layered double hydroxide (FeOOH/CoFe LDH), has been prepared on nickel foam through a one-step hydrothermal reaction as an efficient OER catalyst for alkaline seawater electrolysis. The hierarchical nanostructure provides abundant active sites for the catalyst; the superaerophobic property ensures sufficient contact between the catalysts and the electrolyte, and the interaction between FeOOH and CoFe LDH further enhances the OER activity. The FeOOH/CoFe LDH catalytic electrode exhibits remarkable OER performance in simulated seawater solution (1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). Specifically, at an industrial current density of 400 mA cm–2, the overpotentials are just 320 mV at 25 °C and 257 mV at 60 °C. Meanwhile, after 300 h of stability testing at a current density of 100 mA cm–2, the overpotential of the electrode increases by a mere 19 mV. This work will afford a simple approach for designing effective electrodes for alkaline seawater electrolysis.

Synthesis of FeOOH-Loaded Aminated Polyacrylonitrile Fiber for Simultaneous Removal of Phenylphosphonic Acid and Phosphate from Aqueous Solution

Rui Zhou,Wusong Xu,Peisen Liu,Shangyuan Zhao,Gang Xu,Qizhong Xiong,Weifeng Zhang,Chaochun Zhang,Xinxin Ye

Phosphorus is one of the important metabolic elements for living organisms, but excess phosphorus in water can lead to eutrophication. At present, the removal of phosphorus in water bodies mainly focuses on inorganic phosphorus, while there is still a lack of research on the removal of organic phosphorus (OP). Therefore, the degradation of OP and synchronous recovery of the produced inorganic phosphorus has important significance for the reuse of OP resources and the prevention of water eutrophication. Herein, a novel FeOOH-loaded aminated polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANAF-FeOOH) was constructed to enhance the removal of OP and phosphate. Taking phenylphosphonic acid (PPOA) as an example, the results indicated that modification of the aminated fiber was beneficial to FeOOH fixation, and the PANAF-FeOOH prepared with 0.3 mol L−1Fe(OH)3colloid had the best performance for OP degradation. The PANAF-FeOOH efficiently activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of PPOA with a removal efficiency of 99%. Moreover, the PANAF-FeOOH maintained high removal capacity for OP over five cycles as well as strong anti-interference in a coexisting ion system. In addition, the removal mechanism of PPOA by the PANAF-FeOOH was mainly attributed to the enrichment effect of PPOA adsorption on the fiber surface’s special microenvironment, which was more conducive to contact with SO4•−and •OH generated by PDS activation. Furthermore, the PANAF-FeOOH prepared with 0.2 mol L−1Fe(OH)3colloid possessed excellent phosphate removal capacity with a maximal adsorption quantity of 9.92 mg P g−1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the PANAF-FeOOH for phosphate were best depicted by pseudo-quadratic kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model, showing a monolayer chemisorption procedure. Additionally, the phosphate removal mechanism was mainly due to the strong binding force of iron and the electrostatic force of protonated amine on the PANAF-FeOOH. In conclusion, this study provides evidence for PANAF-FeOOH as a potential material for the degradation of OP and simultaneous recovery of phosphate. Keywords:polyacrylonitrile fiber;FeOOH;activate peroxydisulfate;organic phosphorus;adsorption

Construction of FeOOH modified CoMxOy (M = Mo, W, V) on nickel foam for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Tingting Wen,Limin Wang,Yaqiong Gong

Design and synthesis of a highly efficient OER catalyst is the key to improve the efficiency of hydroelectrolysis for hydrogen production. In this paper, a rational approach to improve the catalytic performance of CoMoO4 nanomaterial was reported. A nanoflower structured CoMoO4 precursor was synthesized on nickel foam using a typical hydrothermal method. Then, CoMoO4/NF was etched through brief immersion in iron nitrate solution at room temperature to produce FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF. The unique 3D structure of FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF could availably promote interfacial electron transfer as well as effectively provide abundant active sites, and it exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity. FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF requires an overpotential of 209 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Meanwhile, the material FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF exhibits excellent catalytic durability of up to 24 h, which is promising for practical applications in energy conversion. Thus, this work may offer a viable strategy to assemble remarkable OER electrocatalysts.

Mn doping accelerates regeneration of Fe2+ in FeOOH and promotes efficient H2O2 activation for degradation of As(III)

Yanmei Li,Jing Wang,Ziyang Xiang,Junhui Yang,Jinglin Yin,Xin Guo,Wenlei Wang

In this study, a carbonized aerogel (CA) decorated with Mn-FeOOH hybrid nanoparticles was prepared and has been used as a better heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst. Mn doping accelerated the regeneration of Fe 2+ and promoted the decomposition of H 2 O 2 while producing many hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which solved the mass transfer problem in the traditional heterogeneous Fenton system. The amount of·OH in the Mn-FeOOH@CA/H 2 O 2 system within 40 min was 2.4 times higher than that in the FeOOH@CA/H 2 O 2 system, which further indicates that·OH was the main active species. High-porosity CA has been designed as an electron transport channel. During photocatalysis , electron transfer occurred between the Mn-FeOOH composite material and CA. The Fe 2+ could be used as reaction sites to promote the activation of H 2 O 2 on the surface of 1-Mn/FeOOH, and achieved 100 % As(III) degradation efficiency within 25 min. The catalyst maintained more than 80 % of its original oxidation capacity after five cycles of experiments, which indicates that it has good durability. This work is expected to provide rational design of heterometallic doped materials with oxygen vacancies to treat arsenic pollution.

Interfacial electronic coupling in Mn3O4/C@FeOOH nano-octahedrals regulates intermediate adsorption for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Hongmei Tang,Lin Lv,Haiyang Xian,Lingyu Ran,Bohong Chen,Yinxuan Fu,Yuandan Wu,Min Fan,Houzhao Wan,Hao Wang

Exploiting high-efficient low-cost metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is still urgent and challenging. Herein, a hierarchical nanostructure of manganese oxide/carbon@iron oxyhydroxide (denoted as Mn 3 O 4 /C@FeOOH) nano-octahedrons via a three-step approach. The optimal electrocatalyst Mn 3 O 4 /C@FeOOH was achieved and delivered a low overpotential of 295 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 47.6 mV dec −1 and a decent stability toward long-term electrolysis of 16 h with only 2.2% degradation. The excellent OER performance of the hybrid Mn 3 O 4 /C@FeOOH could be attributed to the synergistic effects of the individual counterparts, namely, the structural support of the amorphous carbon skeleton to maintain the integrity of microstructures, the enhanced conductivity imparted by the uniformly dispersed Mn 3 O 4 and graphite nanoparticles, and the partial electron redistribution between the Mn 3 O 4 /C and FeOOH interface, optimizing the adsorption/desorption of intermediate oxygenated species. This work provides a novel strategy to prepare an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for OER in alkaline media.

FeOOH and nZVI combined with superconducting high gradient magnetic separation for the remediation of high-arsenic metallurgical wastewater

Yongkui Li,Suqin Li,Binbin Hu,Xin Zhao,Penghui Guo

Metallurgical wastewater with high arsenic (As) concentration presents important challenges to human health and the environment because of its high toxicity and carcinogenicity. Iron (Fe)-based adsorbents can effectively detoxify low As-containing wastewater but are less helpful for high concentration of As and for solid–liquid separation. Herein, an advanced strategy is proposed to dispose high As wastewater using nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) and ferric oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) combined with superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) technology. The superconducting HGMS technology promoted the removal of As by nZVI and FeOOH via a magnetic flocculation reaction, while simultaneously separating reaction products adsorbed As from wastewater. Interestingly, nZVI could be corroded to release Fe(II) ions which then generated Fenton reaction under aerobic conditions, facilitating the oxidization of As(III)/Fe(II) to As(V)/Fe(III) ions. The Fe(II) and Fe(III) hydrolyzed in the form of hydroxy hydroxide and further generated the magnetic flocculates and coprecipitate. The results showed that 99.06% of As was successfully removed from wastewater with an initial As concentration of 5358 mg/L, at a dosage of 20 g/L, a magnetic field strength of 5 T, and a flow velocity of 500 mL/min. Compared with FeOOH, nZVI showed more favorable adaptability for lead smelting wastewater. Removal of As from wastewater by using nZVI combined with superconducting HGMS technology has a great potential to achieve industrial application for metallurgical heavy metal wastewater.

Simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and As(III) from co-contaminated aqueous solution by α-FeOOH modified biochar

Zhu Sihang,Qu Ting,Irshad Muhammad Kashif,Shang Jianying

A novel α-FeOOH modified wheat straw biochar (α-FeOOH@BC) was developed and the findings of the current study showed that α-FeOOH@BC is an efficient material for the simultaneous removal of cations (Cd(II)) and anions (As(III)) from aqueous solutions. The SEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis proved that α-FeOOH@BC was covered by α-FeOOH. In the single adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) were 62.9 and 78.3 mg/g, respectively. In the dual adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) dropped to 39.3 and 67.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and As(III) by α-FeOOH@BC were much higher by BC and α-FeOOH both in single and dual adsorbate system. The adsorption results were well fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption on α-FeOOH@BC had a competitive effect, and the dominant adsorption mechanisms were co-precipitation and ion exchange. Our study showed that α-FeOOH@BC could be an effective remediation material for Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption from aqueous environment.

An electrochemiluminescence sensor for 17β-estradiol detection based on resonance energy transfer in α-FeOOH@CdS/Ag NCs

Yixin Liu,Binxiao Li,Yuanyuan Yao,Beibei Yang,Tongtong Tian,Yan Miao,Baohong Liu

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) resonance energy transfer system is constructed for 17β-estradiol (E2) detection using α [email protected] nanospheres as the ECL-active substrates and Ag NCs as an efficient quencher. CdS QDs loaded onto three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like α-FeOOH nanospheres (α [email protected] nanospheres) exhibited excellent ECL responses, which is attributed to dual-amplification of α-FeOOH frameworks. The 3D hierarchical structure of the α-FeOOH nanospheres provided abundant sites for loading ECL-active species, thus significantly improving the ECL performance of substrates; While Fe 3+ presented on surface of α-FeOOH nanospheres could be reduced to Fe 2+ in negative potentials, after which might activate persulfate in a Fenton-like process, resulting in more sulfate free radicals for more effective ECL responses via electron transfer reactions. Additionally, Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) stabilized by single stranded oligonucleotide were introduced as quenching probes for CdS QDs owing to the well-matched donor-acceptor spectrum for efficient energy transfer, which makes them appropriate for detection of E2. The proposed strategy displayed a desirable dynamic range from 0.01 to 10 pg mL −1 with a limit of detection of 0.003 pg mL −1 . The proposed strategy based on the ECL-RET strategy offered an ideal way for E2 detection, and also revealed an alternative platform for detection of other small molecules.
