Double-shelled hollow sphere V2O5-based conductometric ethanol gas sensor

Feiyu Zhang,Yuan Qu,Xiang Lu,Ziwen Ding,Siqi Li,Wei Ji,Song Liu

Hollow nanoarchitectures-based metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) materials have exhibited signal enhancement in gas sensors. However, the mechanism behind the sensing process and how to further improve the sensing performance is still challenging. In this study, three types of V 2 O 5 nanostructures including single-shelled hollow V 2 O 5 (S-V 2 O 5 ), double-shelled hollow V 2 O 5 (D-V 2 O 5 ), and V 2 O 5 nanosheets (ST-V 2 O 5 ) were fabricated and taken ethanol sensing as an example to study the structure-dependent sensing mechanism systematically. The response of D-V 2 O 5 (80%) to 100 ppm ethanol at 240°C was twice that of S-V 2 O 5 (36%) and ST-V 2 O 5 (34%). This is due to the rich pore structure and enlarged specific surface area of D-V 2 O 5 effectively improving the utilization of active sites and the adsorption-desorption process of target gases on the sensor surface. The present work provides a simple approach to boost the sensitivity of MOS gas sensors and proves the way for the realization of high-performance sensor fabrication.

Ultrasensitive Bio-H2S Gas Sensor Based on Cu2O-MWCNT Heterostructures

Manli Lu,Junyu Chi,Huijuan Chen,Zongxu Liu,Pengfei Shi,Zheng Lu,Liang Yin,Lulu Du,Li Lv,Pinhua Zhang,Kaifeng Xue,Guangliang Cui

Developing a respiratory analysis disease diagnosis platform for the H2S biomarker has great significance for the real-time detection of various diseases. However, achieving highly sensitive and rapid detection of H2S gas at the parts per billion level at low temperatures is one of the most critical challenges for developing portable exhaled gas sensors. Herein, Cu2O-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) heterostructures with excellent gas sensitivity to H2S at room temperature and a lower temperature were successfully synthesized by a facile two-dimensional (2D) electrodeposition in situ assembly method. The combination of Cu2O and MWCNTs via the principle of optimal conductance growth not only reduced the initial resistance of the material but also provided an ideal interfacial barrier structure. Compared to the response of the pure Cu2O sensor, that of the Cu2O-MWCNT sensor to 1 ppm of H2S increased nearly 800 times at room temperature, and the response time decreased by more than 500 s. In addition to the excellent sensitivity with detection limits as low as 1 ppb, the Cu2O-MWCNT sensor was extremely selective with low-temperature adaptability. The sensor had a response value of 80.6 to 0.1 ppm of H2S at −10 °C, which is difficult to achieve with sensors based on oxygen adsorption/desorption mechanisms. The sensor was used for the detection of real oral exhaled breath, confirming its feasibility as a real-time disease monitoring sensor. The Cu2O-MWCNT heterostructures maximized the advantages of the individual components and laid the experimental foundation for future applications of highly sensitive portable breath analysis platforms for monitoring H2S.

PI@TB blend membranes containing amorphous carbon for gas separation

An Wang,Jiayou Liao,Xu Wu,Xianjie Meng,Jiwei Ma,Siyuan Peng,Yinghua Shen,Chengyun Gao

This study employs the same diamine monomer to synthesize polyimide (PI) and Tröger’s Base-based polymers of intrinsic microporosity (TB), which exhibit infinite miscibility due to like-dissolves-like phenomenon. The TB and PI exhibit significantly different thermal decomposition temperatures, enabling the partial carbonization of TB at a lower temperature while retaining the favorable mechanical properties of PI. Consequentially, This work propose a novel method to prepare blend membranes with a partial amorphous carbon structure. These membranes have excellent gas separation performance, similar to that of carbon membranes, while also retaining the machinability of traditional polymer membranes. The molecular structure of the material is characterized using 1H NMR and FTIR spectra, while the microscopic morphology is observed through scanning electron microscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the compatibility of both polymers and explain the improved properties. Gas transportation measurement confirms that PI@TB blend membranes demonstrate significant improvement in gas separation performance compared to original membranes. Specifically, enhancements in the gas separation performance of CO 2 /CH 4 , H 2 /CH 4 , and O 2 /N 2 systems have been observed, with the CO 2 /CH 4 pair demonstrating the most remarkable improvements, surpassing the 2019 Robeson upper limit. This design strategy can be applied to produce blend membranes containing amorphous carbon that exhibit great potential for high-performance separation processes in the future.

Temperature-regulation liquid gating membrane with controllable gas/liquid separation

Baiyi Chen,Huimeng Wang,Jiadai Xu,Liting Pan,Yuan Jing,Xu Hou

Membrane separation technology with the ability to regulate gas/liquid transport and separation is critical for environmental fields, such as sewerage treatment, multiphase separation, and desalination. Although numerous membranes can dynamically control liquid-phase fluids transport via external stimuli, the transport and separation of gas-phase fluids remains a challenge. Here, we show a temperature-regulation liquid gating membrane that allows in-situ dynamically controllable gas/liquid transfer and multiphase separation by integrating a thermo-wettability responsive porous membrane with functional gating liquid. Experiments and theoretical analysis have demonstrated the temperature-regulation mechanism of this liquid gating system, which is based on thermo-responsive changes of porous membrane surface polarity, leading to changes in affinity between the porous membrane and the gating liquid. In addition, the sandwich configuration with dense Au-coated surfaces and heterogeneous internal components by a bistable interface design enables the liquid gating system to enhance response sensitivity and maintain working stability. This temperature-regulation gas/liquid transfer strategy expands the application range of liquid gating membranes, which are promising in environmental governance, water treatment and multiphase separation.

Attapulgite Nanorod-Incorporated Polyimide Membrane for Enhanced Gas Separation Performance

Shiyang Zhang,Xiaochuang Lu,Mingwei Cai,Zhi Wang,Zhenjing Han,Zhiyin Chen,Rongtao Liu,Kaixin Li,Yonggang Min

Polyimide (PI) membrane is an ideal gas separation material due to its advantages of high designability, good mechanical properties and easy processing; however, it has equilibrium limitations in gas selectivity and permeability. Introducing nanoparticles into polymers is an effective method to improve the gas separation performance. In this work, nano-attapulgite (ATP) functionalized with KH-550 silane coupling agent was used to prepare polyimide/ATP composite membranes by in-situ polymerization. A series of characterization and performance tests were carried out on the membranes. The obtained results suggested a significant increase in gas permeability upon increasing the ATP content. When the content of ATP was 50%, the gas permeability of H2, He, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2reached 11.82, 12.44, 0.13, 0.84, 0.10, and 4.64 barrer, which were 126.87%, 119.40%, 160.00%, 140.00%, 150.00% and 152.17% higher than that of pure polyimide, respectively. No significant change in gas selectivity was observed. The gas permeabilities of membranes at different pressures were also investigated. The inefficient polymer chain stacking and the additional void volume at the interface between the polymer and TiO2clusters leaded to the increase of the free volume, thus improving the permeability of the polyimide membrane. As a promising separation material, the PI/ATP composite membrane can be widely used in gas separation industry. Keywords:polyimide;attapulgite;gas separation;permeability;selectivity

Photocatalytic Degradation of VOC Waste Gas in Petrochemical Sewage Fields

Xiaoxu Duan,Yuming Qian,Jiwei Wu,Liang Ma,Zhihuang Zhao,Liwang Wang,Lingyu Xiao,Shifan Zhang

The large amount of waste gas containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) discharged from petrochemical sewage plants will cause air pollution and seriously endanger the safety of human beings and the ecological environment. In this paper, we proposed a photocatalytic oxidation degradation technique of VOCs and designed a photocatalytic reaction device loaded with TiO2/SnO2 catalyst. Under UV light irradiation, there is an energy level difference in the conduction band between TiO2 and SnO2, which makes the photogenerated electrons (e–) migrate to SnO2 and reduces the surface electron density of TiO2. Thus, the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs (e––h+) is inhibited and the catalyst activity is improved. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of the oxidation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and ozone greatly improves the conversion rate. In addition, in the industrial side line, by studying the influence of inlet gas volume, inlet gas concentration, and gas humidity (RH) on the conversion rate of the VOCs, we revealed the operation law of the photocatalytic technique in industrial applications. Under the best working conditions, the purification rate of the VOCs was as high as 92.73%. This technique can not only effectively avoid the damage to the environment caused by polluting VOCs but also promote the low-carbon and green development of enterprises in the industry.

Effect of a Terminated PVCap on Methane Gas Hydrate Formation

Zhiguang Song,Shiyuan Cui,Cuiping Tang,Yong Chen,Deqing Liang,Sibo Wang

Polyvinylcaprolactam (PVCap) is an economic kinetic inhibitor for hydrate formation in pipelines during oil and gas transportation. However, its application is limited because of the low inhibition performance under certain conditions. In this work, a modified PVCap on its chain end is proposed. 2-amino-3-propionic acid mercapto-terminated polyvinyl caprolactam (PVCap-NH2-COOH) was synthesized and its performance as a KHI for methane hydrate formation was evaluated under different conditions. Results showed that the performance of PVCap-NH2-COOH as a KHI was better than that of PVCap at the same concentrations. Gas hydrate samples with 1 wt.% PVCap-NH2-COOH were measured using Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and cryo-SEM. PVCap-NH2-COOH had a selective action on a specific crystal surface of the hydrates and could prevent methane molecules from entering large cages. Its inhibition ability increased with the decrease in the occupancy rate of large cages. The morphology of the gas hydrate crystal changed from porous in a pure water system to a chaotic but compact structure state in the system with PVCap-NH2-COOH.Keywords:natural gas hydrate;formation;inhibition;modification

Gas induced surface reconstruction of CuZnSi catalyst for methanol synthesis

Xiaoling Hong,Qiao Zhao,Yanping Chen,Xiaotao Zu,Wei Liu,Jian Liu

Reconstruction of heterogeneous catalyst is essential for understanding the structure-performance relationship, however, it still remains limitations of the methodology development. Herein we reveal a gas induced activation strategy to reconstruct the surface of CuZnO x /mSi catalyst through pretreating it in various environments, including CO, H 2 , and H 2 &CO mixture. Specifically, high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy as well as elemental distribution analysis disclosed that H 2 pretreatment successfully induced the formation of active Cu nanoparticles which uniformly dispersed on amorphous ZnO layer, whereas CO pretreatment led to the reconstruction of Cu nanoparticles/cluster, resulting in the formation of CuC x nanofibers under the high temperature reaction environment. The catalytic activity of the H 2 -treated CuZnO x /mSi-H 2 is about three times higher than that of the CO-treated CuZnO x /mSi-CO for methanol synthesis. This gas atmosphere induced catalyst reconstruction strategy might pave the way for the rational catalyst design with precise active phase.

L-Arginine self-delivery supramolecular nanodrug for NO gas therapy

Mengsi Zhang,Hao Jin,Yi Liu,Lanlan Wan,Shuwei Liu,Hao Zhang

NO gas therapy is a supplementary approach for tumor treatment due to the advantages of minimal invasion, little drug resistance, low side effect and amplified efficacy. l -Arginine (L-Arg), a natural NO source with good biocompatibility, can release NO under the stimulation of H 2 O 2 in tumor microenvironment. However, the conventional l -Arg delivery systems via noncovalent loading usually lead to inevitable premature leakage of nano-cargos during blood circulation. In this work, an efficient l -Arg self-delivery supramolecular nanodrug (SDSND) for tumor treatment is demonstrated by combining Mannich reaction and π-π stacking. l -Arg links to (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) with the assistance of formaldehyde through Mannich reaction, and then assembles into nanometer-sized particles via π-π stacking. The guanidine group of l -Arg and the phenolic hydroxyl groups of EGCG are preserved in the SDSNDs, which allows for accomplishing gas therapy by provoking tumor cell apoptosis and combining with EGCG to amplify apoptosis, respectively. In addition, the SDSNDs exhibit high biocompatibility and avoid the premature leakage of l -Arg in blood circulation, providing an alternative l -Arg delivery system for NO gas therapy. Statement of significance NO gas therapy has attracted emerging interest in tumor treatment. However, the controlled NO release and the avoidance of premature leakage of NO donors remain challenging. In this work, L-Arginine (L-Arg) self-delivery supramolecular nanodrug for efficient tumor therapy is demonstrated through the Mannich reaction of L-Arg, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and formaldehyde. Stimulated by tumor microenvironment, the guanidine groups of L-Arg allow for accomplishing NO release and thus provoking tumor cell apoptosis. The nanodrug also avoids the premature leakage of L-Arg in blood circulation. Moreover, the preserved phenolic hydroxyl groups of EGCG combine with L-Arg to amplify apoptosis. The nanodrug exhibits high biocompatibility and good therapeutic effect, providing an alternative L-Arg delivery system for NO gas therapy.

Preparation and Gas Sensing Properties of Hair-Based Carbon Sheets

Zhaofeng Wu,Yidan Xia,Lixiang Liu,Qihua Sun,Jun Sun,Furu Zhong,Min Zhang,Haiming Duan

Waste human hair was carbonized into carbon sheets by a simple carbonization method, which was studied as gas sensing materials for the first time. The effect of carbonization temperature on the structure and gas sensing properties of hair-based carbon sheet was studied by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrum, Raman spectrum, and gas-sensitive tester. The results showed that the carbonization temperature had a significant effect on the structure and gas sensing performance of carbon sheets, which were doped with K, N, P, and S elements during carbonization. However, the sensor of the carbon sheet does not show good selectivity among six target gases. Fortunately, the carbon sheets prepared at different temperatures have different responses to the target gases. The sensor array constructed by the carbon sheets prepared at different temperatures can realize the discriminative detection of a variety of target gases. For the optimized carbon sheet, the theoretical limit of detection of hydrogen peroxide is 0.83 ppm. This work provides a reference for the resource utilization of waste protein and the development of gas sensors. Keywords:human hair;biomass carbon material;gas-sensitive properties;carbon sheets

Glucose-Responsive Enzymatic Cascade Microreactors in Gas-Shearing Microfluidics Microcapsules

Qingli Qu,Weixia Cheng,Xiaoli Zhang,Hossein Ravanbakhsh,Guosheng Tang,Aying Zhou,Dong Pei,Ranhua Xiong,Chaobo Huang

Enzymatic cascade reactions are essential for metabolic pathway and biological signal transduction in living cells. More and more attention has been paid to artificial microreactors, which mimic these efficient, methodical, and selective biological cascade catalytic systems in cells. Natural hydrogels such as alginate and chitosan are thought of as suitable materials for matching the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties with extracellular matrix. Inspired by the structures of eukaryotic cells, alginate/chitosan multicompartment microcapsules for enzymatic cascade reaction are developed using an oil-free gas-shearing method. Multiple enzymes as biocatalysts are encapsulated in the particles to resemble complex physiological reactions. Biocatalysts, including glucose oxidase and peroxidase in alginate Janus core as a model, sense the external hyperglycemic environment, resulting in insulin release following chitosan shell protonation. The microcapsules show an excellent recyclability, room-temperature long-term and anti-proteolysis stability. The microreactor approach leads to the development of a multi-enzymatic cascade reaction system and provides an ideal carbohydrate platform to further understand the biomimetic metabolic function of organelles and organs.

Room-Temperature Detection of Perfluoroisobutyronitrile with SnO2/Ti3C2Tx Gas Sensors

Peng Wu,Yi Li,Song Xiao,Dachang Chen,Junyi Chen,Ju Tang,Xiaoxing Zhang

Ti3C2Tx MXene is an emerging two-dimensional transition-metal carbide/nitride with excellent properties of large specific surface and high carrier mobility for room-temperature gas sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and long-term stability of pristine Ti3C2Tx-based gas sensors remains challenging. SnO2 is a typical semiconductor metal oxide with high reaction activity and stable chemical properties ideal for a dopant that can comprehensively improve sensing performance. Ti3C2Tx and SnO2 are investigated for the first time in this study as functional materials for hybridization and room-temperature detection of the gas insulating medium fluorinated nitrile (C4F7N) with microtoxicity. A Ti3C2Tx–SnO2 nanocomposite sensor exhibits superior sensitivity, high selectivity, strong anti-interference ability, and excellent long-term stability. The enhanced sensing mechanism is ascribed to the synergistic effect between SnO2 and Ti3C2Tx and the strong adsorption ability of SnO2 to C4F7N similar to bait for fish. We also established an actual leakage scene and demonstrated the feasibility of the Ti3C2Tx–SnO2 sensor to provide distribution rules with high sensing efficiency for actual engineering applications. The results of this work can expand the gas sensing application of Ti3C2Tx MXene and provide a reference for maintaining C4F7N-based eco-friendly gas-insulated equipment.
