Hydrogen (H2) stands as a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, especially within the domain of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), offering prospective solutions to mitigate both environmental and energy-related challenges. In this work, we successfully synthesized a sea-urchin-like catalyst, specifically a nickel–cobalt phosphide nanoneedle array on N-doped carbon nanospheres (Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs), for efficient HER by a sequential hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating process. The catalyst exhibits sea-urchin-like structures, offering a specific surface area of 298 m2 g–1 and consequently furnishing a greater abundance of active sites. Comparing with non-sea-urchin-like Ni0.5Co1.5P@CN catalysts, the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs exhibit an overpotential of 163 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 60 mV dec–1, and a maintained current density of approximately 90% during 50 h of continuous electrolysis. Experiments demonstrate that the outstanding electrochemical properties of the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs originate from nitrogen doping of carbon spheres, the distinctive morphology of sea-urchin-like nanoneedle arrays, and simultaneous enhancements in intermediate adsorption energy, charge transfer, and electrolyte diffusion channel shortening. This work emphasizes a preparation strategy for synthesizing an attractive electrocatalyst with a low cost and efficient HER performance.

Background There is an unmet need for specific and sensitive imaging techniques to assess the efficacy of breast cancer therapy, particularly Her-2-expressing cancers. Ultrasonic microbubbles are being developed for use as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. However, nanobubbles circulate longer, are smaller, and diffuse into extravascular tissue to specifically bind target molecules. Here, we characterize a novel Herceptin-conjugated nanobubble for use against Her-2-expressing tumors. Methods Phospholipid-shelled nanobubbles conjugated with Herceptin (NBs-Her) were fabricated using a thin-film hydration method and characterized in vitro in breast cancer cell lines and in vivo in a mouse model. Results The average size of the unconjugated nanobubbles (NBs-Blank) and NBs-Her was 447.1 ± 18.4 and 613.0 ± 25.4 nm, respectively. In cell culture, the NBs-Her adhered to Her-2-positive cells significantly better than to Her-2-negative cells ( p < 0.05). In vivo, the peak intensity and the half-time to washout of the NBs-Her were significantly greater than those of the NBs-Blank ( p < 0.05). In addition, contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging quality was improved through the use of the NBs-Her. The nanobubbles were able to penetrate into tumor tissue to allow extravascular imaging, but did not penetrate normal skeletal muscle. Conclusions The Herceptin-conjugated nanobubble had many properties that made it useful for in vivo imaging, including longer circulation time and better tumor selectivity. This platform may be able to provide targeted delivery of therapeutic drugs or genes.

The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) suffers from sluggish kinetics, mainly due to the high energy barrier for water dissociation and mismatched adsorption-desorption balance of key intermediates (H* and OH*). To address this challenge, this study employs a dual-functional strategy combining Co doping and in-situ CO regulation to construct a Co-MoS 2 support with abundant sulfur vacancies (Sᵥ). These Sᵥ can efficiently anchor Ru species as highly dispersed, electron-deficient Ru 4+ state, which leads to excellent alkaline HER performance of Ru 8% @Co-MoS 2 -CO by displaying a low overpotential of 46 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 62 mV dec −1 . Combined experimental characterization and DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveals that Co-Sᵥ synergy not only optimizes Ru’s electronic structure with downshift d band center but also finely modulates the electronic properties of adjacent S site, which thereby enables precise tuning of the adsorption/desorption (ADT) behavior of OH* and H*. Meanwhile, the significantly increased electronic density around the Fermi energy (E F ) leads to enhanced efficiently electronic conductivity of Ru 8% @Co-MoS 2 -CO, as also verified by the SECM measurement, which constitutes another key factor leading to its excellent alkaline HER activity. In addition to that, it is also interestingly found that there probably also exists another route for H evolution, wherein the H* can migrate from the S site to the Ru site by crossing a low energy barrier of 0.83 eV and be evolved into H 2 by following Tafel route, jointly boosting reaction efficiency. Generally, present work provides atomic-scale insights and references for designing high-performance electrocatalysts via defect engineering-regulated metal-support interactions, which would favor other highly-efficient alkaline HER catalyst designs.

Construction of molybdenum phosphides (MoP) that are connected to conductive composite materials has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy for improving the activity of MoP, and it is crucial for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, increasing the exposed active sites and simultaneously enhancing the synergistic effect between MoP and the conductive substrate is challenging. Herein, constructing a multi-hierarchical conducting connection based on carbon nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets was proposed. MoP nanoparticles were in situ grown in a carbon matrix to form flower-like MoP/C particles and were well scattered in stable lamellar rGO nanosheets. Benefiting from the conductive network and good dispersion of active sites, the resultant MoP/C-rGO hybrid exhibits efficient HER activity, with Tafel slopes of 69 mV dec−1 and 87 mV dec−1 under acidic and alkaline conditions. Significantly, even when applied as an anode for LIBs, it demonstrates excellent storage performance with a high specific capacity and long-term stability. It displays superior cycle performance of a reversible capacity of 624.6 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 500 cycles. This work provides insight into the construction of multi-hierarchical structures for efficient bifunctional nanostructural electrodes for energy conversion and storage.

The primary challenge for efficient H2 evolution and hydrogen energy conversion is to develop highly active and stable catalysts with simple and reliable preparation processes. In this regard, we have designed and synthesized a porous carbon-supported low-Pt alloy catalyst (Pt3Co/Co@C composite) using ZIF-67 as a template. It showed uniformly dispersed Pt3Co/Co on the porous carbon layer due to the confinement effect of the porous carbon layer. Pt3Co/Co@C demonstrated excellent activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction in the full pH range, with an overpotential of 187 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 to attain 100 mA/cm2 as well as long-term stability. It also displayed superior mass activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at 0.85 V (vs RHE) compared to the commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the Pt3Co/Co@C catalyst exclusively enabled a four-electron reaction process under ORR conditions without the competitive pathway to H2O2. The current work provides guidance for the design and facile synthesis of Pt-based catalysts with enhanced performance.

A series of tri-functional nanoflower (NF) catalysts with numerous nanodendrites (Pt 3 NiRh, Pt 3 NiRu, Pt 3 NiPd, Pt 3 Ni, and Pt 2 Ni 2 Rh NFs) were synthesized by introducing Rh, Ru, and Pd into Pt-Ni nanoflowers, aiming at accelerating the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The as-prepared catalysts displayed superior anti-poisoning ability and excellent activity due to uniform morphology and good dispersibility. Their electrochemical characterization revealed that the Pt 3 NiRh NFs showed the highest mass activity (2.17 A m g P G M - 1 ) and specific activity (3.13 mA cm -2 ) toward ORR, close to 9.9 and 4.6 times higher than the values measured on Pt/C (46.7 %). As for MOR, mass and specific activities of Pt 3 NiRh NFs were 1.88 A m g P G M - 1 and 2.62 mA cm -2 , far exceeding the values on commercial Pt/C. Moreover, HER activity of Pt 3 NiRh NFs outperformed commercial Pt/C. This work is valuable to develop promising multi-functional catalysts with enhanced activity and anti-poisoning ability.

The industrial development of acidic water splitting significantly counts on the activity associated with stability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. In this work, we have constructed cubic Rh@Ir core–shell for acidic water splitting. The formed Rh@Ir electrocatalyst shows a high HER performance with only 29 mV overpotential for 10 mA cm −2 , stemming from the upshifted and downshifted d band center of Ir and Rh, leading to a moderate hydrogen binding strength. The Ir atom donates its electrons to nearby Rh atoms triggering a high susceptibility in nucleophilic attack by H 2 O to generate *OOH; thereby, the overpotential required to achieve 10 mA cm −2 is 216 mV for Rh@Ir core–shell, better than commercial IrO 2 . Moreover, the stability is superior to commercial IrO 2 and pure Ir electrocatalyst due to the strong electronic interplay in Rh@Ir contributing to a better resistance towards electrochemical dissolution proved by operando Raman and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies. Only 1.55 V is needed for Rh@Ir to drive overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 .

Developing highly active, durable and economical noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a crucial role in the future hydrogen economy. Herein, ultrafine cable-like WC/W2C heterojunction nanowires (NWs) covered by few-layer N-doped graphite-like carbon (labeled WC/W2C@C NWs) have been firstly accomplished via a simple two-step pyrolysis treatment of W18O49 NWs precursor, exhibiting tunable phase composition, excellent HER activity, fast kinetic metrics and remarkable stability along the entire pH range. With the optimized phase composition, WC/W2C@C NWs (WC : W2C ≈ 1 : 1.3) display the low overpotentials of 69 mV and 56 mV at the cathodic current density of 10 mA cm−2 and small Tafel slopes of 52 and 59 mV dec−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate that such prominent performance towards the HER was mainly attributed to abundant interfaces between WC and W2C phases in the cable-like heterojunction nanowires which may exert both the high HER activity of W2C and the excellent electrochemical stability and conductivity of WC. Furthermore, the one-dimensional (1D) nanowire morphology and graphite-like carbon shells also promote the conductivity of the whole electrocatalytic material. This work presents a new route to accomplish the morphology control, composition and electronic regulation so as to boost the HER performance of tungsten-carbide-based electrocatalysts, providing new guidance for exploring efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts.

In order to explore the effect of Fe doped CoP nanosheets on both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrodesulfurization (HDS), FeCoP/C nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal process with Fe doped ZIF-67/C for the growth of FeCo-hydroxides nanosheets , as well as a following low-temperature phosphorization process. The performance evaluation results show that the FeCoP/C nanosheet exhibits an excellent acidic HER performance and an ordinary HDS performance compared to CoP/C and FeP/C catalysts. Experimental characterization and density functional theory results show that the high HER activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the nanosheet structure facilitates the exposure of active sites and the doped Fe atoms make CoP have a suitable hydrogen adsorption energy , while the ordinary HDS activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the doped Fe atoms can inhibit the cleavage of C–S bonds by CoP.

What is essential to solving energy scarcity problems is that develop the high activity, durable and non-noble metal-based dual-functional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). In this work, a series of core-shell structure M@Fe–Cu-GR nanocubes (NCs) are prepared. In the prepared process, the bimetallic FeCu prussian blue analogues (PBA) is used as precursor, transition metals ions Co 2+ and Ni 2+ are introduced into the FeCu-PBA using the exchange of potassium ions with other metal ions , and then the FeCu-PBA are successfully loaded on the graphene oxide (GO) employed the attraction of opposite charges between polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) and GO. Electrochemical tests show that the Tafel slope of Co–Ni@Fe–Cu–GR NCs for HER and OER are 60 and 82 mV dec −1 , respectively, and Co–Ni@Fe–Cu–GR NCs shows excellent performance in long-term stability test.

The development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts for HER has been received extensive attention. Among these, minimizing the Pt usage and promoting its utilization efficiency are essential prerequisites for a future hydrogen economy. Herein, we use a new ε-Keggin-type polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework H3[Zn4(bimb)2][PMoV8MoVI4O40]·12H2O (POMOF-1) as a support to load a low amount of ultrasmall Pt nanoparticles (NPs), and then mix this material with Ketjenblack carbon (KB) to form a new composite catalyst (Pt@POMOF-1/KB). This composite catalyst shows a low Pt loading amount of 0.43 wt% and the average size of the Pt NPs is 1.5 nm. Pt@POMOF-1/KB exhibits a remarkable HER performance in 0.5 M H2SO4. It only requires an overpotential to of 23 mV to observe a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is superior to that of 20% Pt/C. The mass activity of Pt@POMOF-1/KB is almost 100 and 37 times that of 20% Pt/C at overpotentials of 50 and 100 mV, respectively, as a consequence of the very low noble-metal loading. This result may provide an approach to meet the cost requirements for large-scale applications.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to clean fuel production. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (TMCs) are promising HER electrocatalysts by their excellent intrinsic catalytic activity. However, the synthesis of 2D TMCs requires prolonged high-temperature conditions or rigorous etching processes. Here we achieved an ultra-fast and facile synthesis of ultra-thin carbon-terminated 2D TMCs via a microwave-pulse sugar-blowing method. A series of 2D TMCs are obtained rapidly within 3 min. This method accurately adjusts carbon-layer thickness and facilitates the formation of 2D structures. Accordingly, the electrocatalytic HER activity and stability of TMCs are significantly improved. The 2D W 2 C with 1 nm carbon-layer thickness shows high HER activity and ultra-long durability (100 h) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Furthermore, this microwave-pulse method is a generic synthesis strategy that is demonstrated by the successful preparation of 2D WC, Mo 2 C and MoC.
