Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disorder characterized by articular cartilage degradation, persistent oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. Targeting oxidative damage within the joint microenvironment represents a promising avenue for disease modification, offering potential to preserve cartilage integrity, alleviate inflammatory cascades, and ultimately delay structural progression. Lipid nanoparticles were prepared by thin-film hydration and extrusion, then embedded into GelMA microspheres via a microfluidic droplet platform with UV crosslinking to form a sustained-release system. Biocompatibility, ROS-scavenging, anti-inflammatory, and chondroprotective effects were evaluated in vitro and in vivo, while transcriptome sequencing was applied to elucidate system-induced molecular alterations. In vitro , Api-LNP@GMS markedly attenuated ROS accumulation and inflammatory responses in IL-1β-stimulated chondrocytes, as demonstrated by ROS fluorescence imaging, immunofluorescence, Western blotting, and qRT-PCR analyses. In vivo , intra-articular administration in anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) rats effectively alleviated joint inflammation while preserving cartilage integrity and functional capacity. Moreover, transcriptome-wide RNA sequencing, integrated with pathway enrichment analysis and validated by molecular assays, revealed robust activation of the Nrf2–HO-1 antioxidant signaling axis. Api-LNP@GMS is a multifunctional antioxidant biomaterial platform that integrates a natural therapeutic with a sustained-release delivery system, offering a safe and effective strategy to reprogram the osteoarthritic microenvironment and mitigate disease progression. Mg 3 (Sb, Bi) 2 is a promising mid- to low- temperature thermoelectric material owing to its earth-abundant composition. However, its performance is limited by low intrinsic carrier concentration and the inherent trade-off among thermoelectric parameters. Herein, large-grain sized Mg 3.01 Sb 1.3 Bi 0.69 Te 0.01 Ho 0.07 are fabricated via melting method at 1423 K using a tantalum-sealing technique. A high peak zT of 1.6 at 700 K is realized, along with a peak power factor of 24 μW cm −1 K −2 and a low κ L of 0.41 W m −1 K −1 . The superior performance originates from synergistic manipulation of electron and phonon transport. Ho doping optimizes carrier concentration up to 7.2 × 10 19 cm −3 due to its small electronegativity difference with Mg, while the large grain ensures high carrier mobility. Simultaneously, atomic-scale alloy disorder suppresses phonon propagation, resulting in a substantial reduction in lattice thermal conductivity. This work highlights the great potential of synergistic transport engineering for high-performance Mg 3 (Sb, Bi) 2 -based thermoelectric materials.

Ba3Sc2F12:Yb3+, Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Ho, Tm) crystals with various morphologies have been synthesized via a one step hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and up conversion photoluminescence (UCPL) spectra were used to characterize the samples. The influences of surfactants, pH values, and molar ratio of F−/Sc3+ on the crystal phase, size and shape of final products have been studied in detail. The aspect ratio of products increased gradually with the increase of F−/Sc3+ molar ratio. Additionally, the luminescence properties of Ba3Sc2F12:Yb3+, Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Ho, Tm) crystals were systematically studied. The blue emission is attributed to the 1G4 → 3H6 transition of Tm3+; the green emission can be obtained due to the 2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ and the 5S2/5F4 → 5I8 transition of Ho3+; the red emission comes from the 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+ and the 1G4 → 3F4 transition of Tm3+. Based on the generation of red, green, and blue emissions in the different Ln ion-doped Ba3Sc2F12, the white light emission can be obtained by appropriately doping Yb3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ in the present Ba3Sc2F12 crystals due to the color superposition principle. Here, the sample Ba3Sc1.5856F12:0.4Yb3+, 0.01Er3+, 0.0044Tm3+ crystals showed suitable intensity ratio of blue, green and red (RGB) emissions resulting in bright white light with CIE-x = 0.274 and CIE-y = 0.287, which was illustrated by a photograph under excitation of 980 nm. The prepared Ba3Sc2F12:Ln3+ phosphor has potential applications in the fields of three dimensional displays, back lighting and white light sources.

High-fat diets (HFDs) impair the intestinal barrier by increasing permeability and oxidative stress, which contributes to obesity-related disorders. Ulva lactuca, a marine green alga, produces extracellular vesicles (UEVs) that remain underexplored as functional food components. In this study, UEVs were isolated and characterized, showing a cup-like shape morphology with average diameter of 188.8 nm. Functional assays demonstrated that UEV treatment attenuated oxidative stress, reduced apoptosis, and restored tight junction proteins. In a gut-on-a-chip model, UEVs improved transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and enhanced mucin secretion under HFD-mimicking stress. Mechanistic studies revealed that UEVs activated the Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 signaling pathway, promoting nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and upregulation of antioxidant genes. Collectively, these findings highlight UEVs as novel food-derived nanostructures with dual functions in oxidative stress reduction and intestinal barrier protection, supporting their potential in functional food applications targeting metabolic gut disorders.

Soil is an important sink for various pollutants. Recent findings suggest that soil and sediment would spontaneously form HO • through Fenton or Fenton-like reactions under natural conditions. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of organic ligands (OLs) on the occurrence of HO • in surface soil/sediment were experimentally and computationally examined. Results confirmed that HO • generation was ND-12.92 nmol/g in surface soil/sediment, and the addition of EDTA-2Na would significantly enhance the yields of HO • by 1.4–352 times. Moisture was the decisive factor of soil HO • generation. The release of Fe(II) from solid into the aqueous phase was essential for the stimulation of HO • in EDTA-2Na suspensions. Furthermore, complexation reactions between Fe(II) and OLs would enhance single electron transfer (SET) reactions and the formation of O 2 •- . Interestingly, for specific OLs, their stimulations on SET and formation of O 2 •- would depress HO • generation. Provoking HO • generation by OLs could be efficiently used to degrade sulfamethoxazole in rice field sediment. The study provided new knowledge on how commonly synthetic OLs affect the HO • generation in surface soil/sediment, and it additionally shed light on the engineered stimulation of in-situ Fenton reactions in natural soil/sediment.

Herein, a series of Y2W3O12:10%Yb3+/x%RE3+ (RE = Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors is prepared via a solid-state reaction. The upconversion and downshift luminescence properties of the phosphors were investigated under an excitation of 980 nm. The bright blue light emission from Tm3+ ion and the green and red light emissions from Ho3+(Er3+) ions were observed. The near-infrared light intensity of NIR-I (Tm3+, ∼850 nm), NIR-II (Er3+: ∼1550 nm; Tm3+: ∼1783 nm) and NIR-III (Ho3+: ∼2050 nm) were analyzed. In particular, the dramatic thermal enhancement phenomenon in visible and NIR regions was exhibited by the Y2W3O12:10%Yb3+/x%RE3+ (RE = Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors. Among them, the green light intensity of Er3+ ions increased 26.77 times, from 303 to 573 K. The NIR-II emission band (∼1783 nm) intensity of Tm3+ ions at 533 K increased 168.7 times compared to that at 313 K. The possible thermal enhancement mechanism is illustrated by the negative thermal expansion (NTE) and Frenkel defect of the Y2W3O12 host. Finally, the optical temperature sensing performances of Y2W3O12:10%Yb3+/x%RE3+ (RE = Er/Ho/Tm) samples are investigated according to the luminescence intensity dependence relationship on temperature. The maximum value of SR reached 4.24% K−1 at 353 K for Y2W3O12:10%Yb3+/0.6%Ho3+ phosphor. The results indicate that the Y2W3O12:10%Yb3+/x%RE3+ (RE = Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors possess anti-thermal quenching properties and are suitable for developing optical temperature sensors.

Treating articular cartilage defects in patients remains a challenging task due to the absence of blood vessels within the cartilage tissue. The regenerative potential is further compromised by an imbalance between anabolism and catabolism, induced by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the advent of tissue engineering introduces a promising strategy for cartilage regeneration, offering viable solutions such as mechanical support and controlled release of chondrogenic molecules or cytokines. In this study, we developed an antioxidant scaffold by incorporating natural silk fibroin (SF) and kartogenin (KGN)-loaded liposomes (SF-Lipo@KGN). The scaffold demonstrated appropriate pore size, connectivity, and water absorption and the sustained release of KGN was achieved through the encapsulation of liposomes. In vitro experiments revealed that the SF-Lipo@KGN scaffolds exhibited excellent biocompatibility, as evidenced by enhanced cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation of chondrocytes. The SF-Lipo@KGN scaffolds were found to stimulate cartilage matrix synthesis through the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) antioxidant signaling pathway. In vivo experiments demonstrated the effective promotion of articular cartilage regeneration by the SF-Lipo@KGN scaffolds, which enhanced extracellular matrix anabolism and restored the intrinsic redox homeostasis. Overall, this study successfully developed biomimetic KGN-loaded scaffolds that restore cartilage redox homeostasis, indicating promising prospects for cartilage tissue engineering.

Soil contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been an environmental issue worldwide, which aggravates the ecological risks faced by animals, plants, and humans. In this work, the composites of nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on carbonylated activated carbon (nZVI-CAC) were prepared and applied to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of PAHs in contaminated soil. The prepared nZVI-CAC catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the PS/nZVI-CAC system was superior for phenanthrene (PHE) oxidation than other processes using different oxidants (PS/nZVI-CAC > PMS/nZVI-CAC > H2O2/nZVI-CAC) and it was also efficient for the degradation of other six PAHs with different structures and molar weights. Under optimal conditions, the lowest and highest degradation efficiencies for the selected PAHs were 60.8% and 90.7%, respectively. Active SO4−•and HO•were found to be generated on the surface of the catalysts, and SO4−•was dominant for PHE oxidation through quenching experiments. The results demonstrated that the heterogeneous process using activated PS with nZVI-CAC was effective for PAH degradation, which could provide a theoretical basis for the remediation of PAH-polluted soil.

Intestinal barrier disruption and oxidative stress are the major pathological features during the ulcerative colitis (UC). The present research aimed to explore the amelioration property of fucoidan of Stichopus chloronotus (Fuc Sc) against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) resulted UC. The findings from our study suggest that treating with Fuc-Sc improved the integrity of the Caco-2 monolayer through raising its TEER value, reducing LDH release, promoting the tight junction proteins (TJs) in Caco-2 cells, and shielding the cells from decreases of these proteins caused by H 2 O 2 . Besides, Fuc-Sc activated Nrf2/HO-1 pathway to facilitate the antioxidant activities of Caco-2 cells under oxidative stress through elevating the SOD and GSH, and reducing LDH and MDA. Furthermore, oral administration of Fuc-Sc attenuated DSS resulted body weights decrease, DAI score increase, colon length decrease, and structural damage of colon tissue. Fuc-Sc also promoted the barrier function and suppressed oxidative injury via activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signal pathway. Collectively, this research provided the theoretical foundation for fucoidan as a promising functional food for colitis.

Reperfusion, while essential for restoring blood supply, paradoxically exacerbates neuronal damage through cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). This study aimed to develop a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive drug delivery system (DDS) loaded with edaravone (EDA) to enhance targeted therapy for CIRI. The stimuli-responsive DDS was synthesized using dextran (DEX) as the biocompatible carrier and benzeneboronic acid pinacol ester (BAPE) as the ROS-sensitive moiety. The physicochemical characteristics of the DEX-BAPE/EDA (DB/EDA) micelles were systematically evaluated. In vitro studies assessed the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects of DB/EDA. Moreover, the neuroprotective efficacy of DB/EDA in vivo was analyzed via behavioral tests, infarct volume measurement, ELISA assays of inflammatory cytokines and OS markers, and Western blot analysis of Nrf2-related pathways. Pharmacokinetics and biosafety were analyzed through plasma profiling and H&E staining. DB/EDA exhibited high stability, efficient drug encapsulation, and ROS-responsive drug release. Cellular uptake studies confirmed enhanced internalization of DB/EDA micelles in BV2 cells. In the oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model, DB/EDA significantly suppressed TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and MDA, restored SOD levels, and attenuated apoptosis. In the middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) mice, DB/EDA administration effectively improves cognition and mitigates neuronal damage. Mechanistically, DB/EDA activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, amplifying antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed prolonged circulation and increased brain accumulation, and histopathological analysis demonstrated the safety profile of DB/EDA. The ROS-responsive DB/EDA nano-micelles provided targeted EDA delivery to ischemic brain regions, alleviating CIRI via Nrf2 activation, suggesting that DB/EDA is a promising strategy for CIRI treatment. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a liver disorder resulting from excessive alcohol intake, and currently, there are no therapeutics approved by the FDA for its treatment. This study investigates the protective effects and underlying pharmacological mechanisms of two chitosan oligosaccharides, COST (MW ≤ 1000 Da) and COSM (MW ≤ 3000 Da), in mitigating alcohol-induced liver disease (ALD). In animal models, we evaluated the changes in ALD following treatment with COST and COSM. Histopathological analysis revealed that both COST and COSM interventions mitigated hepatic steatosis and inflammatory infiltration. Additionally, these compounds reduced various markers of liver injury, enhanced antioxidant enzyme levels, and significantly improved liver function. Western blot analysis demonstrated that COSM markedly decreased the expression of the hepatic metabolic enzyme CYP2E1, activated the Keap-1/Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway, and restrained the NF-κB and MAPK pathways. In an in vitro model of alcohol-induced hepatocyte L02 injury, both COST and COSM exhibited protective effects on hepatocytes, corroborating the findings from the animal studies. Collectively, in vivo and in vitro experiments confirmed that COST and COSM can reduce oxidative damage, enhance antioxidant capacity, and ameliorate steatosis and inflammatory damage in the liver, thereby significantly attenuating alcohol-induced injury. Notably, COSM exhibited slightly superior efficacy compared to COST.

Yolk–shell structured Bi2SiO5:Yb3+,Er3+ upconversion nanophosphors have been successfully synthesized via a simple template-assisted route, in which the reaction of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped bismuth precursor nanospheres with the silica capping layer in situ is ingeniously designed and controlled. The phase transition and morphology evolution are investigated in detail by X-ray powder diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy to propose the formation mechanism of the yolk–shell nanostructure. The yielded Bi2SiO5:Yb3+,Er3+ nanophosphors can emit bright green upconversion luminescence under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode, which enables them to be promising emitters for optoelectronic devices. The potential of the Bi2SiO5:Yb3+,Er3+ nanophosphors as an optical nanothermometer is also demonstrated. The proposed facile synthetic route, unique yolk–shell nanostructure and good upconversion luminescence performance lead the way to access these lanthanide-doped Bi2SiO5 nanophosphors for applications in biotechnology and optoelectronic devices.
