Despite being highly emissive in solution, aggregation of 4-(4,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H- imidazole-2-yl) benzaldehyde ( BMI ) molecules typically results in the quenching of fluorescence. To overcome the shortcomings of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), the substituent of imidazole in the nitrogen atom of the BMI have been found as a conformation function group (CFG) to turn the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The introduction of CFG not only causes the restriction of intramolecular rotations (RIR) effect, but also attenuates the coplanarity of the molecule. As a result, the BMI with ACQ effect is transformed into BMI s with AIE effect. As the steric hindrance of the CFG increases, the AIE characteristic of the derivative also becomes apparent. With the assistance of the thioacetal unit, BMIBD can act as an outstanding probe for the detection of Hg 2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity. A series of characterizations were implemented to prove the unique response mechanism of BMIBD toward mercury ions , including optical behavior investigation, mass analysis and 1 H NMR studies. Further, the detection limit is low up to 36 nM. Taking advantages of excellent optical properties of this AIE probe BMIBD , point-of-care testing (POCT) for Hg 2+ detection was further investigated. Meanwhile, BMIBD presented the desirable analytical property for the real water samples. Additionally, cellular imaging experiment revealed that the probe has an excellent biocompatibility that could be applied for tracking Hg 2+ in living cells.

In order to conveniently and effectively detect the heavy metal ion Hg2+ existing in water, a magnetic fluorescence chemosensor has been strategically prepared by immobilizing a Rhodamine B derivative RhB–tris(2-aminoethyl)amine on Fe3O4@SiO2–Au@PSiO2 composites via gold particles. The adsorption and detection for Hg2+ ions were investigated with fluorophotometry. This chemosensor shows high sensitivity and high selectivity for Hg2+ over other metal cations owing to the ring opening of the rhodamine fluorophore selectively induced by Hg2+. In addition, the presence of Fe3O4 in the sensor also facilitates the magnetic separation of the Fe3O4@SiO2–Au–Hg2+@PSiO2 from the solution.

To strengthen the properties of nanozymes, a Ag-β-cyclodextrin-graphene oxide ternary nanocomposite (Ag-β-CD-GO) was developed first by a homogeneous redox-active self-assembly method. Taking advantage of the excellent environmental compatibility, high surface areas, and strong hydrogen-bonding ability of β-cyclodextrin and graphene oxide, the proposed Ag-β-CD-GO exhibited superior peroxidase-mimicking activity, high stability, and nontoxicity as well. It could accelerate the oxidation–reduction reaction of the common colorimetric substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and the oxidant H2O2 with Michaelis constants (Km)/maximal reaction rates (Vmax) of 3.3 mmol·L–1/2.45 × 10–8 mol·L–1·s–1 and 0.13 mmol·L–1/2.52 × 10–8 mol·L–1·s–1, respectively. Interestingly, toxic Hg2+ could decrease the characteristic UV–vis absorbance at 653 nm of the Ag-β-CD-GO-TMB-H2O2 system exclusively with an obvious color change from blue to colorless, expressing a visual hypochromic effect. Under the optimal testing conditions (pH 4.0, 180 μL of 1.5 mmol·L–1 TMB, 180 μL of 1.0 mol·L–1 H2O2, incubation for 20 min at 25 °C), the target Ag-β-CD-GO-TMB-H2O2 was efficiently utilized for visual monitoring of toxic Hg2+ in natural water, drink, and fruit juice samples with quite a low detection limit, i.e., 8.3 × 10–10 mol·L–1 (S/N = 3), far below the 3.0 × 10–8 mol·L–1 permitted in drinking water by the World Health Organization (WHO). The synergetic enhancement peroxidase-mimicking activity of Ag-β-CD-GO and the exclusive recognition mechanism to Hg2+ were further investigated in detail.

Mercury(II) is among the most hazardous heavy metal pollutants, necessitating the development of fluorescent sensors that are efficient, highly sensitive, and suitable for practical applications. Herein, we present a novel boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (B,N-CDs) probe prepared via a hydrothermal method using borax, ethylenediamine, and citric acid as starting materials. Relative to previously reported B,N-CDs, our probe features a markedly higher fluorescence quantum yield (35.6%) and an ultralow detection limit of 10.5 nM for Hg 2+ , well below the WHO guideline for drinking water. The probe also exhibits excellent selectivity for Hg 2+ over competing metal ions, accompanied by a strong fluorescence quenching response. A combination of fluorescence lifetime measurements, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and thermodynamic analysis reveals a static quenching mechanism mediated by photoinduced electron transfer (PET), which is entropy-driven and spontaneous. Beyond its outstanding analytical performance, the probe displays superior solubility in water and alcohols, low cytotoxicity (confirmed by L929 cell assays), and good biocompatibility in zebrafish fluorescence imaging. Furthermore, successful Hg 2+ detection in real water samples validates its practical utility. Taken together, the high quantum yield, ultralow detection limit, well-defined PET-based static quenching mechanism, and multi-level bioimaging validation set this B,N-CDs probe apart from existing carbon-dot sensors and highlight its potential for environmental and biological mercury monitoring.

This paper described the optimized design, synthesis and application of a novel rhodamine thiospirolactam derivative as an ‘off-on’ fluorescent probe for the detection of Hg2+ in aqueous samples. The ‘off-on’ fluorescence and color signal change of the probe is based on an Hg2+-triggered domino reaction which brings on the opened-ring form of the rhodamine spirolactam to regain the conjugated system of the rhodamine skeleton. In the well designed probe, the thiospirolactam serves as both Hg2+ binding unit and electron-defect carbon centre, a phenolic hydroxyl with very strong nucleophilicity after deprotonation is chosen as the attacking unit, and a benzene ring is introduced on the linker to afford steric effects, which benefits an efficient nucleophilic reaction, with a high sensitivity towards Hg2+. It exhibits a stable response for Hg2+ from 1.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−6 M, with a detection limit of 3.0 × 10−9 M. The response of the probe to Hg2+ is highly selective and pH-insensitive, with a fast response time. All these unique features make it particularly favorable for cellular Hg2+ imaging applications. It has been preliminarily used for highly sensitive monitoring of Hg2+ levels in living cells with satisfying resolution.

In this study, flower-like MoS 2 was synthesized under non-equilibrium conditions for effectively absorbing Hg 2+ from acidic wastewater. The prepared flower-like MoS 2 was characterized using XRD, FESEM, BET, and EDS analyses. The effects of initial concentration of Hg 2+ , pH, temperature, and common anions on the adsorption performance of flower-like MoS 2 were investigated. The results showed that the removal of Hg 2+ from a solution with the initial concentration of 200 mg/L Hg 2+ was close to 100 % within 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1790 mg/g at 25 °C. The regression coefficient for the adsorption of Hg 2+ conformed to the pseudo second-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherm was more consistent with Langmuir model, indicating that the removal of Hg 2+ using flower-like MoS 2 was through monolayer adsorption. The reaction activation energy for the adsorption of Hg 2+ by flower-like MoS 2 was 26.89 kJ/mol, which again verified that the synthesized material was a fast and efficient adsorption material. Based upon the results, it is inferred that the flower-like MoS 2 has a high ability for removing Hg 2+ from wastewater and therefore, exhibits broad application prospects.

Mercury ion is a global toxic and hazardous environmental pollutant. In this work, a facile and selective ratiometric fluorescent probe was constructed for the detection of mercury ion. The dual-emissive carbon dots (BYCDs) were fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method utilizing o-phenylenediamine and glycine as raw materials, and the prepared BYCDs had two independent fluorescence emission peaks at 426 nm and 543 nm under a single excitation wavelength. Based on the change of the intensity ratio of the two fluorescence emission peaks after the addition of Hg 2+ , a sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescent probe based on BYCDs was constructed for the detection of Hg 2+ with good linearity ranging from 0.95–50 μM and a detection limit of 0.27 μM. In addition, the recovery of this probe was satisfactory in the standard addition experiments of real water samples, and it could be applied to the analysis of Hg 2+ in real water samples.

Humic acid residue (HAS), as a waste product from the extraction of humic acid from low-rank coal such as weathered coal and lignite, is characterized by its abundant yield and low price. However, the low efficiency and high pH value of HAS in passivating heavy metals limit their application in the passivation of heavy metals in soils. To improve the passivation efficiency of humic acid residues against heavy metals, in this study, modified humic acid residues (N-HAS) were prepared by pretreatment with HNO 3 and modification with NH 4 H 2 PO 4 . The results showed that the passivation efficiency of N-HAS was up to 87.75% and 57.07% for Hg and Pb in the effective state, and the adsorption kinetics were under the pseudo-second-order model. The addition of N-HAS to the soil resulted in a change in the morphology of the heavy metals, with the acid extractable state of Hg and Pb reduced by 66.92% and 30.44% respectively, and the results of the Toxicity Leaching Test (TCLP) showed that the addition of N-HAS significantly reduced the leaching toxicity and potential ecological risk index (RI). The soil physicochemical properties changed after the addition of N-HAS and there was a correlation between the soil physicochemical properties and the effective state of Hg and Pb content. In conclusion, N-HAS has a positive effect on the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil and has a broad application prospect.

Sensitivity and selectivity are critical parameters to evaluate the performance of sensors. For trace detection, it remains a challenge to design a new sensor that achieves high sensitivity and selectivity simultaneously. Here, we present a target-activated dual Mg 2+ -dependent DNAzyme (MNAzyme) that served as a simple sensing model to explore the multivalency in improving the analytical sensitivity and selectivity for target detection. Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ), a notorious toxic metal ion , was selected as a model target. In the presence of Hg 2+ , the thymine-rich regions of the hairpin probe and primer could hybridize to form a stable duplex via the thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine structure. Then, an intact enzyme sequence was exposed and two separate enzyme fragments were close to each other, generating a dual MNAzyme. Benefiting from the localized high-concentration of the enzyme strand, the dual MNAzyme showed a remarkable improvement in binding stability. The catalytic rate constant of the dual MNAzyme was theoretically 1.60 times higher than that of the monomeric counterpart, and the sensitivity and selectivity had 4.50 and 1.44-fold enhancement, respectively. When the dual MNAzyme was used for sensor applications , the limit of detection was determined to be 0.04 and 0.2 nM via UV–vis spectrophotometer and naked eye, respectively. Meanwhile, the method offered desirable selectivity toward Hg 2+ against other metal ions. With the advantages of simple operation, high sensitivity, and desirable selectivity, the developed multivalent sensing platform could be easily expanded in the future for the on-site detection of other low-abundance analytes.

Game theory—the scientific study of interactive, rational decision making—describes the interaction of two or more players from macroscopic organisms to microscopic cellular and subcellular levels. Life based on molecules is the highest and most complex expression of molecular interactions. However, using simple molecules to expand game theory for molecular decision-making remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept molecular game-theoretical system (molecular prisoner’s dilemma) that relies on formation of the thymine–Hg2+–thymine hairpin structure specifically induced by Hg2+and fluorescence quenching and molecular adsorption capacities of cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheets, resulting in fluorescence intensity and distribution change of polythymine oligonucleotide 33-repeat thymines (T33). The “bait” molecule, T33, interacted with two molecular players, CoOOH and Hg2+, in different states (absence = silence and presence = betrayal), regarded as strategies. We created conflicts (sharing or self-interest) of fluorescence distribution of T33, quantifiable in a 2 × 2 payoff matrix. In addition, the molecular game-theoretical-system based on T33 and CoOOH was used for sensing Hg2+over the range of 20 to 600 nM with the detection limit of 7.94 nM (3σ) and for determination of Hg2+in pond water. Inspired by the proof-of-concept for molecular game theory, various molecular decision-making systems could be developed, which would help promote molecular information processing and generating novel molecular intelligent decision systems for environmental monitoring and molecular diagnosis and therapy. Keywords:cobalt oxyhydroxide nanosheets;fluorescent sensing;game theory;Hg2+;thymine–Hg2+–thymine

We herein used a low cost and facile one-step method for synthesizing fluorescent carbon-doped silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) under mild reaction conditions. The fluorescence spectra of Si NPs showed maximum excitation and emission wavelengths at 370 nm and 450 nm, respectively. The fluorescence of the obtained Si NPs can be selectively and efficiently quenched by the Hg 2+ and Ag + . The fluorescent Si NPs showed high sensitivity toward Hg 2+ and Ag + with detection limits of 2.676 μM and 0.457 μM, respectively. Moreover, the sensing ability of Si NPs for Hg 2+ and Ag + were successfully carried out in real water samples, which offered the merits of high sensitivity and high selectivity. In addition, Si NPs were also successfully employed as a promising fluorescent label for the visualization of latent fingerprints. As far as we know, this is first time that silicon nanoparticles are used to visualize latent fingerprints. The fingerprints on different surfaces (silicon wafer, patterned coin, glass sheet, copper sheet and rough plastic board) developed with this Si NPs showed very good fluorescent images with the third level under ultraviolet excitation. The method using fluorescent Si NPs as fluorescent marks provides a variety of advantages including enhanced contrast, retaining stability and non-toxicity. In addition, Si NPs showed highly non-toxic for cellular media, the efficient bioimaging of cellular imaging was enabled after incubation of HepG2 cells in the presence of Si NPs.

Micromotors have held great promise for environmental treatment due to their unique self-propelled movement that can significantly accelerate the chemical process in solution. Herein, we have developed a new AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) fluorescent micromotor using renewable and uniquely hollow kapok fibers as biological templates. The AO–Mn2O3/γ-AlO(OH) micromotor was powered by the asymmetric decomposition of hydrogen peroxide fuel catalyzed by Mn2O3, reaching a maximum speed of 139.6 μm s−1 in 3% H2O2 solution. The micromotor revealed a markedly enhanced fluorescence effect compared to both pure AO solution and non-micromotor counterparts and exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ detection. The detection range and limit for Hg2+ were 5 × 10−8–5 × 10−5 M and 2.25 × 10−8 M, respectively. The enhanced Hg2+ sensing benefited from the synergy of enhanced fluorescence via the inhibition of the dimerization of AO, fluorescence quenching induced by charge transfer and the enhanced contact between the micromotor and Hg2+ ions resulted from the self-propelled motion. This micromotor-assisted fluorescence detection idea provided a new strategy for the development of sensors with high sensitivity.
