Conventional microfluidic chips fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), glass, and silicon suffer from intrinsically fixed surface wettability, tedious post-modification, and inhomogeneous wetting inside enclosed three-dimensional (3D) microchannels, which severely restrict their applications in biphasic fluid manipulation. Herein, we develop a photocurable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based hydrogel featuring a triple synergistic network for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing of integrated microfluidic devices. Under acidic catalysis, glutaraldehyde (GA) undergoes acetalization with PVA to form the first crosslinked network, which consumes hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and introduces hydrophobic alkyl segments. Subsequently, the hydrogel framework is co-constructed by a PVA hydrogen-bonding physical network and a UV-initiated covalent network derived from acrylamide (AAm), acrylic acid (AAc), and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), ultimately yielding a triple-crosslinked network. By adjusting the GA loading, the water contact angle of the hydrogel can be continuously tuned from 15.42 ° (hydrophilic) to 111.66 ° (hydrophobic). Benefiting from the interpenetrating multi-network architecture, the tensile strength increases from 48.76 kPa to 118.27 kPa, and the elastic modulus increases from 14.72 to 63.84 kPa. DLP 3D printing enables the direct fabrication of monolithic microfluidic chips with smooth microchannels down to approximately 160 μm in width, without requiring any post-treatment. Fluorescence characterization confirms that the hydrophilic channels allow stable laminar flow of deionized water, while the hydrophobic channels enable low-friction transport of mineral oil. This work establishes a comprehensive strategy integrating molecular design, wettability programming, and 3D additive manufacturing, providing a scalable platform for applications in fluid transportation, biochemical detection, environmental monitoring, and wearable microfluidics.

Photothermal aerogel fibers offer promise for intelligent
thermal management in extreme cold environments, yet their scalable
production is hindered by slow gelation kinetics, poor mechanical
strength, and limited dyeability. Herein, we report an in situ photo-cross-linking
strategy for the fast gelling fabrication of dyeable photothermal
aerogel fibers, using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the sheath
and methacrylated chitosan (CSMA) aerogel as the core. The photosensitive
CSMA core cross-links within 15 s under UV irradiation, enabling fast
sol–gel transition in a deionized-water coagulation bath within
1 min. The trade-off between dyeability and photothermal performance
is addressed by incorporating cesium tungsten bronze (CWO) nanoparticles
into the TPU sheath layer or in situ polymerizing polypyrrole (PPy)
in the CSMA core layer, whereby light-blue TPU/CWO@CSMA fibers and
near-white TPU@CSMA-PPy fibers were developed. Both fibers exhibit
excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength 3.1–3.3 MPa,
elongation >1600%) and low thermal conductivity (0.047 ± 0.0004
W·m –1 ·K –1 ), achieving
a good synergistic optimization of passive thermal insulation and
active photothermal heating performance. They also display good dyeability
for multicolored fabrication while maintaining strong photothermal
performance. TPU/CWO@CSMA fibers heat to 66.7 ° C under 1-sun
illumination and reach 19.2 ° C at −20 ° C via CWO’s
LSPR effect. TPU@CSMA-PPy fibers show mild, controllable warming (≈16
° C at −7 ° C; 20 ° C at 0 ° C) with slower
cooling. Outdoor tests confirm fabric temperatures remain in a mild
25–34 ° C range without overheating. This work overcomes
the long-standing technical bottleneck of conventional photothermal
aerogel fibers that are typically restricted to single, undyeable
colors, demonstrating promising potential for personal thermal management
and related applications.

Bacterial infections remain a critical challenge in wound care, demanding advanced multifunctional materials for effective treatment. Here, this work presents a 3D-printable hydrogel (STFWA) integrating a Schottky heterojunction and dual-network architecture for synergistic photothermal and photodynamic antibacterial therapy. The hydrogel incorporates W18O49-x@Au nanostructures, where Au nanoparticles are in situ grown on oxygen-deficient W18O49-x (bandgap ≈1.5 eV), forming a Schottky junction that enhances carrier separation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The dual-network matrix, composed of silk fibroin and tannic acid-Fe3+ (TA/Fe3+), exhibits robust mechanical integrity and hemostatic capability, while silk fibroin enables high-resolution digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. The co-existence of W18O49-x and Au induces dual localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), while TA/Fe3+ contributes to deep coloration, collectively boosting photothermal conversion. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the hydrogel exhibits potent antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli through combined photothermal and photodynamic mechanisms. In vivo studies using a rat model of infected wounds demonstrate accelerated healing, enhanced angiogenesis, and regulated inflammation. This work highlights a nanostructure-enabled hydrogel platform for NIR-activated, synergistic antibacterial therapy with clinical potential in infected wound management.

Silk sericin (SS) hydrogels are attractive for soft-matter applications due to their natural origin, ease of processing, and superior hydrophilicity, yet their poor compressibility and structural stability remain key limitations. Here, we report a facile and scalable route for producing highly compressible ionic hydrogels by covalently grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto SS (SS-g-GMA). The grafting density can be tuned between 81.26 % and 98.86 % simply by adjusting temperature and GMA dosage, yielding a UV-curable precursor that maintains excellent rheological properties. Photopolymerization generates a uniform, interconnected microporous network with pore sizes of average 27.24 μm pores, which imparts the hydrogel with an exceptional compressive stress of 70.03 kPa at 67.09 % strain and an ionic conductivity of 0.15 S m −1 . The recombination of hydrogen bonds facilitates rapid electrical self-healing (93.21 % recovery within 15 s). The stress-dependent resistance changes exhibit linear characteristics, rendering this compressible ionic hydrogel suitable for applications in stretchable electronics, biomedical scaffolds, and soft actuators.

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors have attracted significant attention owing to their simple structure and performance. However, the limited volumetric deformation of traditional planar dielectric layers under pressure severely restricts sensitivity improvement. In this study, we developed a high-performance flexible sensor based a 3D-printed microstructured hydrogel composed of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA), and lithium chloride (LiCl). An exposure regulation strategy maintained optimal curing energy (100–200 mJ/cm 2 ) by reducing exposure time by 30–50% with every 5 mW/cm 2 increase in light intensity. By precisely engineering the microneedle aspect ratio (H/D = 2:1), synergistic optimization of sensitivity across broad pressure ranges was achieved: 0.31 kPa -1 in the low-pressure regime (0–6 kPa) and 0.11 kPa -1 in the high-pressure regime (30–160 kPa), which was 3-5 times higher than that of the flat structure. Notably, the cross-sectional shape has a significantly impacts on sensitivity. The triangular cross-sectional design exhibited an enhanced sensitivity of 1.03 kPa -1 in the low-pressure range and maintained 0.56 kPa -1 in the high-pressure region—representing a 400% enhancement over elliptical or square structures. The sensor also demonstrated environmental adaptability from -40 °C to 40 °C, long-term durability (600 cycles), and fast response times (65 ms). These features enable real-time monitoring of diverse physiological signals (e.g., pulse, respiration, and muscle motion), as well as individual identification through handwriting pattern recognition—highlighting its potential for personalized health monitoring, smart wearables, human-machine interfaces, and secure authentication systems.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels are frequently limited in biomedical applications mainly owing to prolonged preparation times, inadequate mechanical properties, and reliance on toxic chemical cross-linkers. Herein, a PVA hydrogel with high strength and cytocompatibility was prepared by a three-step method: the hydrogel was first formed by photo-cross-linking, then prestretched to achieve the molecular chain densification, and finally anchored by COO––Al3+ coordination. As expected, the hydrogel exhibits a 365-fold increase in tensile strength and a 762-fold increase in toughness compared to the original hydrogel with only photopolymerization, when the prestretching degree was 100% and the Al3+ concentration was 0.05 mol/L, respectively. This enhancement mainly comes from the synergistic effect of prestretching-induced molecular chain densification and subsequent aluminum–carboxylate coordination. Besides, the hydrogel is cytocompatible. Through the strategy of hydrogel network initial formation, prestretching, and metal ion coordination in sequence, the hydrogel can reach excellent strength and good cytocompatibility, which makes it potentially suitable for medical applications, e.g., wound dressing and wearable devices.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing β-cells. Islet transplantation offers promise but faces hurdles like immune rejection and poor cell survival. Here, we engineered an innovative core-shell microgel system for durable immune-protective islet cell encapsulation. The microgels were fabricated in our home-made droplet-based microfluidic device, with gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and chitosan methacrylate (CHMA) as the core, and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) and alginate (Alg) as the shell materials to make core-shell structure. This design demonstrated excellent immuno-isolation properties, permitting nutrient exchange but blocking immune components. In vitro assessments revealed the sustained cell viability and glucose-responsive insulin secretion. The transplantation of these microgels into diabetic rat models exhibited the normalized blood glucose levels for 60 days. Notably, the microgels facilitated host tissue integration and angiogenesis. The animals achieved weight recovery but minimal fibrotic encapsulation. These findings position our core-shell microgels as a transformative platform for cell-based diabetes therapy, potentially eliminating the need for chronic immunosuppression.

Ceramic cores fabricated by stereolithography exhibit great potential in casting turbine blades. Previous research on ceramic core molding was primarily conducted using vertical printing techniques, which not only resulted in lengthy molding durations but also compromised the mechanical strength. In this work, silica (SiO 2 ) ceramic cores, with fine complex geometric shapes, were fabricated using 65vol.% ceramic slurry by digital light processing (DLP) with different printing angles. Printing angles significantly impact the surface accuracy, shrinkage, printing efficiency of green bodies, as well as the microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered ceramic core samples. As the printing angle in the green body increases, the bonding area decreases, surface roughness on the XY plane worsens, shrinkage in the Z direction becomes more pronounced, and the printing efficiency declines. Similarly, an increase in the printing angle in the sintered body leads to a reduction in bending strength. At a printing angle of 30°, the printing time is reduced to half of that at 90°, which improves the molding efficiency. Meanwhile, the obtained bulk density of 1.71 g·cm −3 , open porosity of 24%, and flexural strength of 10.6±1 MPa can meet the requirements of sintered ceramic cores. Therefore, designing and optimizing the printing angles can achieve the balance between shrinkage, printing efficiency, and flexural strength.

Despite remarkable advancements in hydrogel-based medical applications in recent years, their clinical translation for pancreatic fistula management remains challenging owing to the moist surgical environment and complex post-pancreatectomy pathophysiology. To address the clinical need for reliable wet-adhesion materials to prevent postoperative pancreatic fistula after distal pancreatectomy (DP-POPF) and postoperative adhesive intestinal obstruction, we developed an asymmetric bilayer hydrogel (BH) patch that integrates an adhesive pancreatic layer (APL) and an anti-adhesion layer (AAL). The APL combines N- hydroxysuccinimide-mediated covalent bonding with xanthan gum-driven interfacial dehydration for robust wet-tissue adhesion, the AAL, composed of poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate)-carboxymethyl chitosan, prevents fibrosis via surface hydration; the BH hydrogel incorporates Ceffe, a cell-free fat extract possessing anti-inflammatory and proangiogenic properties. The BH patch exhibits exceptional mechanical strength, prolonged post-swelling adhesion retention, and enzymatic resistance. In vitro and in vivo studies confirm its outstanding biocompatibility, antibacterial efficacy, and adhesion prevention in rat models. In a DP rat model, the Ceffe@BH group displayed significantly reduced POPF incidence versus the normal saline and hand-sewn anastomosis groups, as demonstrated by reduced drain fluid amylase, attenuated inflammation (↓TNF-α/IL-6), enhanced angiogenesis, and effective adhesion prevention. This suture-free, multifunctional hydrogel presents a standardized solution for POPF with broad potential for wet-tissue surgical applications.

Management of diabetic wounds becomes increasingly challenging as bacterial infections intensify the inflammation. Employing polysaccharide hydrogels with inherent antibacterial qualities can significantly reduce the need for antibiotics to manage infections in diabetic wounds. The typical approach to achieving antibacterial outcomes with hydrogels relies on the penetration of bacteria into their porous architecture. Such penetration not only takes time but can also prolong inflammation, thus impeding the healing of wounds. Hence, the quick capture and eradication of bacteria are essential for optimizing the hydrogel's antibacterial performance. Herein, we introduce a multifunctional polysaccharide hydrogel dressing—designated as HAQ—created for managing bacterial infections in diabetic wounds. This dressing is based on hyaluronic acid, which is modified with methacrylic anhydride, and special functional groups are added to the modified hyaluronic acid matrix: phenylboronic acid for capturing bacteria and quaternary ammonium chitosan for bacterial destruction. As expected, the HAQ system exhibits robust antibacterial effectiveness against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro and in vivo. Consequently, HAQ stands as a promising hydrogel dressing with intrinsic antibacterial capabilities and offers significant potential for managing diabetic wounds infected by drug-resistant bacteria.

The inflammatory microenvironment and inferior chondrogenesis are major symptoms after cartilage defect. Although various modifications strategies associated with hydrogels exhibit remarkable capacity of pro-cartilage regeneration, the adverse effect by prolonging inflammation is still formidable to hamper potential biomedical applications of different hydrogel implants. Herein, inspired by the repair microenvironment of articular cartilage defects, an injectable, immunomodulatory, and chondrogenic L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel is prepared through grafting vinyl and catechol groups to chitosan macromolecules using amide reaction, then further loading MnO 2 nanosheets (MNS). The double crosslinking of photopolymerization and catechol oxidative polymerization endows L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel with preferable mechanical property, affording a suitable mechanical support for cartilage defect repair. Additionally, the robust tissue adhesion capability stemming from catechol groups guarantees the long-term retention of the hydrogel in the defect site. Meanwhile, L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel decomposes exogenous and intracellular H 2 O 2 into O 2 and H 2 O, to effectively alleviate cellular oxidative stress caused by long-term hypoxia. Under the synergies of catechol groups and MNS, L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel not only inhibits macrophages polarizing into M1 phenotype, but encourages them turn into M2 phenotype, thereby, reconstructing an immunization friendly microenvironment to ultimately enhance cartilage regeneration. Predictably, the hydrogel markedly induces rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells differentiating into chondrocytes by expressing abundant glycosaminoglycan and type II collagen. A cartilage defect model of rat knee joint indicates that L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel visually regulate the early inflammatory response of post-implantation, and facilitate cartilage regeneration and recovery of joint function after 12 weeks of post-implantation. All in all, this multifunctional L-MNS-CMDA hydrogel exhibits superior immunomodulatory and chondrogenic properties, holding immense clinical potential in the treatment of cartilage defects.

Chitosan, as a natural polysaccharide, is widely used in the field of hemostasis. However, its inherent limitations such as poor mechanical strength and difficulty in dissolving under alkaline conditions restrict the broader application. This study designed a glycidyl methacrylate-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (M-CMCS) photo-crosslinked hydrogel, incorporating metal-polyphenol network (MPN) microcapsules. The integration of these microcapsules functionalized the hydrogel, enhancing its hemostatic and mechanical properties while imparting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and hemostatic efficacy, promoting the formation of stable blood clots, and had significant potential as a clinically relevant hemostatic material.
